I'd been living and working in Kauai for 5 months when my Mac decided to stop taking a charge and it wouldn't boot up. I was vacationing in Kauai and brought an older laptop instead of the one I normally use. When I needed to connect it to the tv in our unit I discovered I had the wrong video cable. I searched the big box stores on the island for a VGA/SVGA cable and nobody had one. I even called a video game store. I was ready to give up because this type of cable had fallen out of use for many years, and I didn't think I'd be able to find one on the island on such short notice. I use my laptop for business and personal and when it slowed down to a snails pace I was in trouble. I took it to them and they fixed it overnight. It would have been sooner but I didn't get it to them til after noon. Their service can be in by noon and out by 5. Greg has hordes of clients, yet when he was here today taming a balky Sonos system and then cleaning up a misbehaving iMac, he never once made us feel rushed and he never talked down. (We're on the HWGuys' monthly service plan--a true bargain for peace of mind if you depend at all on your computer--so he could have fixed the Mac by remote access, but the Sonos needed hands-on, so he touched the Mac too.) Greg approaches tech support with the quiet touch of a master and the dry humor of a man you'd like to have as a friend. I have used Hardware Guys in the past and even recommended them to friends, but this time it was not a positive experience. I took my computer in because I was not able to get past the start page. They said it could be my hard drive which it was. They were not able to get my data off the hard drive and told me no one else on island could and I would have to send it to the mainland to get my data. He resolved my issue and even installed virus protection on my laptop when he discovered I no longer had any running. 5 stars for these guys! I am a dialysis patient and use a nighttime cycler for peritoneal dialysis. Arrived on the island and discovered I had forgotten the power cord for the cycler in the rush to pack and leave for the airport. Looked up somewhere that might have a power cord and found Hardware Guys. Rushed over there before closing and Greg was able to find a cord that worked. Really nice guy and clearly very knowledgeable. They were literally a life saver. I would highly recommend them. read more

Ok what happened here? I was concerned about my 2 pc's because XP support is ending in about a month I asked Greg, owner of Hardware Guys about updating to win 7...he said at $140 a machine that's $240 and he has a really good $300 pc with Windows on it. Later I came in and asked for the specs on that machine I thought it was a model he offered...turned out it was only ONE used machine he was working on...12Gb of ram, i7 processor, 500Gb hard drive, usb3 ports, hdmi...it all sounded good...I asked if I could give him a deposit, he said no, just name and number...come in Monday...Monday was a holiday, I came in Tuesday he said he was putting windows on it...I said I'd come back Wednesday. Wednesday Greg is sick a girl sells me the machine. I ask about the mandatory usb keyboard and mouse...she says the usb wireless ones will work. This was not true for the Logitech wireless mice I had...their specs said windows 7 & 8. At home I discover it's a Windows Vista operating system. Logitech wireless mice I had didn't work...their package said windows 7 & 8. I called Hardware Guys and the girl said they used wired mice and that I should buy one at WalMart...she said Greg would call...(he did not). I found a really old wireless mouse (pre-unifying usb plug) and it worked. . Thursday I make some calls and was cautioned against Windows Vista. The mouse(s) driver experience confirmed some warnings. I called Greg, got voice mail twice, left messages. I went in to see Greg. I asked how much it would cost to upgrade it to Windows 7. He said I'd have to buy the software and do it myself....he recommended NewEgg.com. I told him I bought his machine to avoid that. He said Vista is Windows 7 (it is not). My receipt said 30 day returns with receipt. Greg said as-is, no warranty...see the (two page single spaced) papers on the wall? Greg said: "Sell it on Craigslist and make some money." I told Greg: I'm not happy with that. He said return it or upgrade it yourself...decide fast. I told him that I'd immediately drive to the other side of the island, get the computer and bring it back. On the way I found NewEgg had 13 version of Windows 7...I'd read posts about OEM version problems, etc ...this is why I had not done this myself for my XP machines. I brought the machine back and Greg said: here's a check for 15% less, "re-stocking charge". I said no one told me about that. (Must be on the 2 page single spaced papers.) The reduction was on the total sale, so he kept 15% of the tax I paid too...that's not right. The check was from "First Tech Fed a credit union in Oregon"??? already written and signed by some lady ...I asked: "an off island bank??? (I paid in cash)...am I going to have trouble with this?" Greg said: "see that sign right there?...that's a thousand dollar sign...if I can buy a sign like that, they can cash your check." ...interesting. I had been lied to a few times, (told things that I found out were not true), there was no sign of customer support or service or fair treatment forthcoming...just a feeling that I'd been had. (Earlier, when I asked what the processor was he said "you'd be retarded not to buy this" (an interesting sales technique). I asked for Windows 7 and got Vista (classic bait and switch technique?) Now I'm thinking that if this check clears, I better be happy with only a $50 loss. I will wait for the check to clear and then share this story with the world. Apparently regular checks don't really "clear"...they either come back rejected, or not...sort of a wait and see system...I think it's too late for him to stop payment of my HEAVILY AND UNREASONABLY DISCOUNTED refund...so I'm posting this now. Yelp apparently is retailer oriented so you won't see this unless you ask to see all reviews (they bury the bad news...fyi), but if he needs to rip me off, others should know about it. They were sooo awesome on getting my computer files being transferred to another computer. They are very super busy, so make sure to call ahead of time if you need to book an appointment. I was vacationing on Kauai Feb. 3-10 and realized that I had brought the wrong adapter for my new Lenovo ThinkPad Ultrabook. No one on the island had one, but when I spoke with Greg at the Hardware Guys - he said that he had a laptop at home, just like mine, and that the new adapter was square, versus the round ones of the past - and unfortunately no one on the island carried the new one yet. Greg actually offered to bring in his power cord/adapter and said I could stop by and leave my laptop so he could charge it for me, and then he even offered to let me take it with me to my hotel. Crazy good service, to say the least. Who does that? This is the Nordstrom of IT help. Very impressed by Greg and his willingness to help. If I lived on the island, I'd be going to the Hardware Guys for all of my IT issues. read more

This place was horrible. After having my computer for 2 weeks, I called them to ask about it. They said it was fixed and it would be $240. Then they called me back and said it wasn't fixed and they needed permission to order the motherboard. After two weeks I called them again and they told me they couldn't order the motherboard and I should come pick up my computer. For this month long hassle, I was charged a $40 diagnostic charge. I took my computer home and order the motherboard myself. I then took the computer to The Computer Hospital in Kapaa and Jeff fixed it in 2 days. Also the problem was not the motherboard. Now I have a motherboard that I paid for and did not need. Jeff at The Computer Hospital only charged me $40 for a diagnostic because he felt so bad for me and what I went through. I will never go back to these guys and everyone should stay away. They have no idea what they are doing and they ripped me off for a $40 diagnostic check they did not do. read more

Stopped by in early December 2012 to have them look at my laptop because it was not starting right. After the guy with the glasses told me it would take a day to look at I never heard from him and after 4 days I called and was told they are busy and I could pay extra to have them look at it now... bait and switch and not right. I told them I was not going to pay more and they said it would be looked at the next week then. I decided since I don't know of another place here to just leave it. The following Wednesday Greg called and said I had a bad hard drive and needed to have a new one installed(over 250, the computer was 300 new) I said I was not going to do that and that I would be in to pick it up. The next day I came in to get it and was told the work was started at it was not done! I TOLD GREG not to fix it but he did anyway and now he says I owe him for the repair. This was crazy and I said I was going to call the police, he then told me that he would put my old hard drive back in and to come back in an hour to get it. After the hour I came back and picked it up, paid their "diagnostic" fee and left. My computer has all my banking information on it and it hasn't worked since I picked it up yet now 3 of my credit card companies and my bank have called me to ask about charges.... 2500! in charges on airline tickets and hotels in California!!!!!! Either these guys don't lockup their stuff or they steal from people! Stay far away from them! read more

Went in to have the hard drive taken out on my dead laptop. was treated very well and while there, I consulted with Rhonda (?) on a friends tablet and she was also very helpful and patient with my lack of tech savvy. The laptop turned it to have what they called an internal hard drive, so they couldn't just remove it and give it to me. I left it there and I chose to trust they would destroy it. I was very happy with the service. They didn't charge me anything but I threw them $10.00 anyway. Will go back. read more

Super stoked to have my irreplaceable photos saved! My fault for dragging my heels to bring in the external hard drive that they were saved to in the first place; in retrospect, I realize it started dying loooong ago. When it was clearly beyond resuscitation, I was advised by several techy people that the fee for retrieving the photos could be astronomical, which caused me to drag my heels some more. I finally thought to find out. I brought the hard drive in to Hardware Guys. The technician was very respectful and genuinely friendly (even though I made his job harder by not bringing the hard drive in sooner). As I implied, I'm beyond thrilled that my precious photos were able to be saved AND for a mere fraction of what I thought it would be. Plus, when you have Hardware Guys repair your technology, they wave the diagnostic fee. This wasn't the first time I've gone to them and they've helped me out big; I definitely trust and highly recommend their services. read more
