A family-owned restaurant that has been serving locals, travelers, and late-night crowds from its classic 10-stool lunch counter since 1930, and continues to be strictly cash-only. A restaurant that not only has survived, but strived for 96 years, owned by the same local family, and is currently owned by fourth-generation owner Matt Bullington. Who has said that the key to its longevity has been sticking to what has made them successful since they opened. A restaurant that has never been remodeled and whose menu has never been expanded, but that in this lies its real charm. A restaurant that despite economic hardship, tries never to raise prices and remain affordable. A restaurant that many people go to it because of their food, others because of their prices, and others like me this morning, because of the experience to sit at its counter and appreciate its character and charm while enjoying a classic breakfast of three fried eggs over easy with bacon and white toast basted with butter. That restaurant was and continues to be the iconic Texas Tavern, located in the heart of Downtown Roanoke. This morning I drove my pearl white Lexus up to it and parked in front of the sidewalk at the parallel parking with a one-hour limit. There is so much history behind this place that the excitement of the moment made the breakfast experience more momentous. Once inside, a young gentleman who has been working there for over two years now greeted me and immediately made me feel at home. He took my order and almost at the same time started making my toast and frying my eggs. In no time at all I had my order in front of me. I noticed and made him aware that one egg was missing. He made it right by frying me another egg over easy and I didn't mind because of his positive attitude and very unique personality. He also asked me how I'd like my coffee and prepared it just as requested with two creams and three sugars. Every one of the three eggs were perfectly fried over easy and I sprinkled a salt and pepper mixture over them. The bread of the toast was so fresh and tasty braised in butter. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review to get a better sense of the place and the high-quality of their food. I'm looking forward to returning one day at lunch time to taste some of their menu items of which they are known for. Starting with their Cheesy Western, the tavern legendary trademark burger served with a fried egg, cheese, pickles, and a sweet-and-tangy homemade cabbage relish. Or maybe a bowl of their secret-recipe chili served with onions. Or their trademark hot dog served Coney Island-style with chili, relish, mustard, and unions. All comfort food that make you feel good and bring a sense of nostalgia, warmth, and satisfaction. I highly recommend this small, historic, eatery for a one-of-a-kind, memorable, dining experience. One that you'll cherish and hold dear forever.

I think the nostalgia and charm are great, I just wish the food was worthy of the history and profile of this place. The food is cheap, but you do get what you pay for.

The food was fresh, hot, and some of the best quality we've had from a Panera in a long time. The restaurant was also very clean and well kept. What stood out most was the customer service. Unlike some other Panera locations in the area, nobody acted irritated or like we were bothering them just for ordering or asking questions. The staff here actually made us feel welcomed and appreciated. Huge difference and we'll definitely be coming back.

But what really caught my attention and moved me was when I researched their mission and discovered that they believe that "good food served in warm, welcoming spaces by people who care" can bring out the best in all of us. After being awarded the NC Triad Yelp Squad Yelper of the Year 2024 Award at the Yelpies Award Ceremony last year, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, celebrating their contributions and accomplishments throughout the year, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants and businesses, and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to uncover those found in hidden paths that for one reason or another have not reached the public in its totality. And this Panera Bread next to Tanglewood Mall off Electric Road in Roanoke, Virginia, is a perfect example. As I entered their restaurant, I was impressed by their clean, organized, and comfortable spaces. Their ordering counter was made of beautiful color wood and their menus were hanging from the wall behind with spotlights pointing at them. And on the left, it turned into several pastries and desserts glass display cases. Aside in front of the counter, they had two tables with four ordering computer stations. I appreciated the convenience but I waited for the order taker employee to come out. A young lady, Jenessa, finally arrived with a smile and gave me a friendly greeting and warm welcome. I asked her what soups they had and she pointed them out very well. Then I asked her what were some of the sandwiches she would recommend and she named a few and the reason why she had mentioned each. I ended up ordering half of the Chicken Bacon Rancher which had grilled, applewood smoked bacon, aged white cheddar, and ranch on their Black Pepper Focaccia. And a bowl of the Black Bean Soup, which came with a French Baguette side. Then I asked about their desserts and she mentioned that at this time of the day all bakery items were at half price. I took another look at them and ordered the Cherry Pastry, and a small Dr Pepper to drink, since today we celebrate Dr Pepper Day here in the Star City of Roanoke. I remembered once I had downloaded their app and became a Panera member so by giving her my phone number, she was able to find me and give me reward points for my purchase today. She gave me a cup for my drink and a pager or beeper to take with me to let me know when my food would be ready to pickup at the pick-up counter. When called, I got up and gave my name to a very nice young gentleman employee, who handed me a long white plate with my soup and sandwich. The Black Bean Soup was amazingly delicious and hot. And the French Baguette was fresh, and soft in the inside. It was so good that it made me think of returning for breakfast. The sandwich was also amazing with lots of chicken pieces and all the item I mentioned before. And the Cherry Pastry was one of the best I've ever had. As if this all was not enough for an extraordinary dining experience, the manager of the restaurant gave me a visit to see how I was doing and to see if all has been to my satisfaction. You can imagine what I told him. In conclusion I highly recommend this restaurant for the comfortable ambiance, the amazing food, and for the excellent customer service, providing an extraordinary dining experience.

As for service, it is comforting seeing some of the same friendly staff working when we visit. They always have our food ready in a timely manner. The atmosphere is comfortable and clean. My only complaint is the cost. They've always been a little pricey, but it feels like they go up with each visit. The way my wife and I cut this down is by having one of us get a combo and the other just a burger. Drinks are unlimited with the Coca-Cola Freestyle machine and the fries portions are huge. Some might find their fries overly salty, but I'm a fan of well seasoned spuds. Despite the high prices, I will continue to treat myself at Five Guys in Roanoke, VA.

And the secret to their success is found in these two simple words: quality and consistency. And Five Guys in Roanoke, Virginia, is a perfect example. Previously I'd heard a lot about Five Guys and their wonderful hamburgers and fries. And today I finally decided to go to Tanglewood Mall, where we have our Five Guys here in Roanoke, Virginia, and give them a try. I went in with high expectations and I came out in love with the place after they far exceeded my highest of expectations! A family-business born from the answer to a simple question a couple of parents decided to ask their sons: "Do you want to go to college or start a business?" And thriving from the "Yes" answer to the question, onwards. When I arrived at Five Guys today I wasn't aware of their history or background. All I knew through word of mouth was that they made good burgers and fries, and that they were expensive. From the time I walked in the door, I was impressed with the restaurant's cleanliness and simplicity of design with the colors white and red standing out as well as their solid wood tables and chairs. The music being played set the tone to the beginning of the dining experience. There were boxes of peanuts with little paper bowls so you can take some peanuts to your table and munch while your food was being prepared. On the wall there was a sign saying where the potatoes used to make your fries today came from. What also stood out were enlarged quotes from different sources all around the restaurant along with articles pinned to the wall about Five Guys and the reason for its success. When it was my turn to order, a friendly African-American lady, Mashenka, greeted me with a smile and warm welcome. She mentioned the Classic Combo that they had, and I ordered that but upgraded it to a Bacon Cheeseburger, with fries and a drink. And of course, I asked for lots of free toppings. Besides this I also ordered a Bacon Cheese Dog. I had seen a picture of it and was attracted by how they serve it cut in half inside a hot dog bun. While I waited I went to the very innovative drink machine and made myself a Cherry Dr Pepper. Then I went to watch how the cheerful employees cooked and prepared the burgers, dogs, and fries. Later while doing my research I found out that their burger meat is fresh and never frozen and their special burger buns are freshly made daily from their recipe in a local bakery and brought in. After picking up my order, I brought the bag to the table and opened it up. The burger and hot dog were wrapped in aluminum foil to keep them warm. The fries came in a bag of its own that was overloaded and there was a whole lot more fries spilled inside the large bag where everything came in. What a relief that besides the fries being so good, cut fresh in-house daily, I also got more than what I expected. Later I found out in my research that they do this intentionally as part of their Core Business Philosophy. The company believes that providing an overwhelming portion of fries is essential to their success and key to customer satisfaction. The feeling of getting more than what you paid for is intended to win over repeat customers. The burger was so fresh and juicy, cooked to perfection, with lots of fresh toppings on top. The bun was fresh and soft with a special taste to it that reminded me of the buns I used to eat with my hot dog after winning a Little League game. And the all beef hot dogs were also quality dogs. Wow, what an extraordinary dining experience having this All-American meal in a friendly environment. I highly recommend this restaurant and look forward to returning many times. Some say it's pricey, I say it's priceless!
