This kennel is the only boarding facility on the island. We would not use this kennel again if there were other options. We found their extra fees excessive.

The resources and the good intentions are definitely there at Horseshu. That being said, I had a several expectations that were not met. I feel that a beginner's ride should include a quick 5-10 minute safety overview before riding, an explanation of what the ride will consist of (i.e. "We will ride around the arena for 5 minutes until you feel comfortable, then head out to the trail for one hour, then circle back to this arena."), some time getting to know the horses and being introduced to their names and personalities, time for photos in the woods, and a partially-narrated tour with information about local flora and fauna. None of these amenities expectations were met, much to my disappointment. Therefore, I feel that the ride was not a good value. Our guide was callous and resentful. He used curse words several times which for me was not a big deal, but if I had been visiting with my family (and/or children) it would have been distressing. It's possible I caught him on an off day. I had to ask for nearly everything including just getting the name of the horse I was riding.

Dr. Guard gave our dog a more thorough inspection than we've ever had at home in Seattle, and provided expert diagnosis of our dog's issues. We were walked through her logic process / decision tree, educated along the way, given space to ask a lot of questions, and given a range of options. The care was top notch, I walked away immensely impressed by the transparency of the diagnosis. the follow on communication by email was superb. Within a day, our dog's GI issues had greatly subsided, suggesting that the diagnosis was also accurate. I will be driving back to San Juan from Seattle for GI related care at this vet hospital.

I thought it might be because of the heat wave we were having at the time, but when she got increasingly lethargic and started hiding, I got worried and called Chuckanut Valley. They got us right in! After quite a bit of poking and prodding, not to mention a full panel of tests, it was determined that my cat was likely just hot. It was a pretty expensive diagnosis, but I was relieved it wasn't something worse. The doctors and staff here are always so loving and kind. And while their prices are definitely premium (aren't all vets?) I do appreciate they have prescription meds on hand when I need them for my pets, and offer discounts if you offer full diagnostic panels. I am so happy to have found them!

Three weeks ago our dog slipped out of his collar, ran across the street and got hit by a car going…read moretoo fast. The driver kept going. My son witnessed the entire event. We rushed to the AEC - they immediately opened the door for us, brought a gurney and helped us with our dog. They started CPR. Their staff was compassionate, calm, and provided us the necessary information in a very supportive way. In the end, our dog passed away. They did all they could to help our dog, while also helping us through this traumatic event.

Dr. Milan Milovancev is truly a godsend! He saved my dog's life. We were able to schedule an…read moreelective surgery just before it turned into an emergency thanks to his quick consultation and ability to move forward with surgery right away. Dr. Milan took the time to answer every single one of my questions, explain the details thoroughly, and develop a plan that prioritized my dog's success while also being mindful of financial constraints. He focused on the essential tests that made the surgery possible for me to afford, and it was always clear that his top priority was my pet's well-being and quality of life. He is exceptional at what he does, and I will always be grateful I found him. The techs were also fantastic; walking me through the pre- and post-op process with care and professionalism. That said, the business side of this hospital left a very different impression. The financial policies feel rigid, profit-driven, and disconnected from the compassion their medical staff provides. My dog's gallbladder surgery was around $10k and they required full upfront payment before even beginning check-in. This drastically delayed check and check out unnecessarily. They do not offer direct pay options with insurance providers and insisted this was somehow a "benefit" to me. In reality, requiring $10k cash or card upfront- and even refusing checks- puts families in heartbreaking positions during emergencies. The check-in process was stressful and impersonal. My dog wasn't even taken back until the payment fully cleared, which took about 30 minutes while I worked with my bank to lift a daily card limit. During checkout, I was immediately presented with a card machine for an additional $850 balance before they would even start preparing my dog for release. There was no warm greeting, no conversation about how my dog did- just a transaction. It made me feel like seeing my dog again was contingent on payment, which overshadowed the relief I felt knowing the surgery was successful. While the front desk is urgent and quick to demand the money- they cannot answer a single billing question from your receipt. In summary: The medical staff here, especially Dr. Milan, are outstanding and truly care about pets and their families. Unfortunately, the administrative and financial side of the clinic delivers a cold, business-first experience that undermines the incredible work being done in the operating room. If Dr. Milan were to practice elsewhere, I would follow him without hesitation. Huge tip: if you are traveling from out of town or just want an additional night right next to their 24/7 urgent care the hotel has a contract with them that provides a great discount. I saw a vehicle(with this website on it) parked in the sun for well over an hour. They had left…read moretheir very elderly dog in the car. Windows were barely open and when they took the dog out, it couldn't stand on its own, as it was extremely over heated. The authorities were called on them. I do hope they are charged with animal cruelty. I wouldn't take my cat to someone who can't even take care of their own animal.
