They gave us two wranglers for just the two of us, and both were knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. It's worth noting that the prices here are better than the other horseback riding outfit I'm aware of on the island that runs rides in Moran State Park. They don't actually seem to get a lot of business, even on mid-summer weekends -- which means that if you go with them you may well get a private tour like we did (hope they stay in business though!).

There are two parking lots, one at the South trailhead and the other at the North. We took the South Trail to the West Overlook to the Ridge trail and stayed on it to the Ravens Ridge trail and the outside of Center Loop trail to return. The South Trail starts in the woods as it goes up and up to the ridge and mountaintop. The first mile and the early part of the hike were tough, it felt like walking on my elliptical with the ramp all the way up. You'll be quickly rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding islands. Did you pack a lunch or a beer? This was a perfect break spot. Carry on through the woods, fields and cliffs and complete your loop. Wildflowers were blooming anywhere the sunlight found it's way through the canopy. Simply stunning. We started off with the 90 min ride in a group and plan on scheduling the 2 hour private ride for later this summer. Elizabeth was very friendly. I really appreciated how we got there, quickly signed up, got equipment and we were off after a introduction. She rode ahead and was always there to answer any questions but my daughter and I were close enough to comfortably talk the entire time. Well, I have to say that I was scared to get on a horse. I was given the most gentle guy they…read morehad--the very sweet Dusty. I have to give a huge shout out to instructor and horse (and people) handler, Nola Butler, who was as patient with me as a person could be. I was able to circumambulate the "arena" with said horse. But when I got on the trail, a few spatial disabilities of mine kicked in (no pun intended), so it was clear I just needed to end my ride. So I got off Dusty as fast as we could get back. (And in the transfer, Dusty managed to grab four huge bushes in one swift movement and put them in his mouth all at once! Impressive!!! That said, he was super gentle and elegantly hoovered an offered ginormous carrot from my hand with delicacy and speed.) So, all told, I maybe spent 30 minutes on the horse, but that was enough time to be truly impressed with this operation and with Nola, who was fabulous. Her assistance and instructions were very clear (and worked!) The set-up is caring about safety. As stated before, Nola is a Goddess of Patience (and good humor...) If I could manage to keep myself on a horse comfortably, I would be very happy with this outfit. I think it was really top notch.

While staying at Wildwood Farm B&B this past September, where PNRA is located, I took three lessons…read morefrom two of their trainers - Robin for dressage and Nola for western and trail. They have at least ten lesson horses used for western and english disciplines, though their dressage school master has apparently gone to the great pasture in the sky. They offer trail rides on 30 acres of woods plus the lanes surrounding their large and well-maintained grassy turnouts and two covered arenas. The horses are in excellent condition and their hooves well maintained, which is something I always look for. They rotate their lesson horses so they aren't overused and as a result they aren't sour as some lesson horses can become. The operation is very safety conscious. I plan on taking lessons again while staying at the B&B. I would recommend this business especially for kids and beginner riders, though anyone who is flexible about their riding will have a great time.

Located just down the street from Richmond Country Farms and just shy of Riverport Entertainment…read morecomplex, Blue Meadow is a lovely riding facility in south east Richmond. It's really easy to get to as the bus to Riverport stops right at Palmberg, and it's just a hop and skip down Steveston Hwy off Highway 99. Blue Meadow has both an outdoor arena and a covered arena (not a completely indoor arena, but sheltered) which is great for our wet climate. The area footing is excellent. It's not soggy and water-logged, which can be a problem in Richmond as we're so close to sea level. The farm is three acres--plenty of room for the horses to graze and run around--and is owned by a family who leases it to the barn manager Yolanda Bloomers. Yolanda has school horses available for lessons and there are also boarding facilities. Blue Meadow has certified Equine Canada instructors/trainers who coach numerous English riding disciplines including dressage and jumping. The Equine Canada certification was important for me when researching a riding instructor, and as I don't own my own horse (yet!?), I needed someone with school horses available. I've recently started taking lessons with Yolanda who came highly recommended from other barn friends. When I emailed Yolanda, she suggested I first come and observe a lesson, so I could see her teaching style. I really appreciated this! It was so great to see her interacting with a rider to see her style, her mannerisms, and her competency. I definitely wanted to take lessons! I've had a couple lessons with Yolanda already at Blue Meadows, and I *definitely* intend to keep going. The price for a private lesson with use of a school horse is fair--equestrian sports are expensive--and I also think it's great value. What I really love about Yolanda's teaching style is that she explains the "why" of things--when this particular exercise is useful, the benefit of lunging in both directions, or how to do this weird terminology thing. Instead of shouting at you from across the arena, she either uses a small microphone and fanny-pack speaker, or walks with you (not beside you, but comes down to the end of the arena you're working in). She also gives the rider ample notice, like a GPS in the car would say "in 500 metres, turn left". I really appreciate that Yolanda gives positive feedback with the constructive criticism. I've worked with a lot of kids, and I've also worked as an instructor (not horseback riding), so I know the benefits of the "compliment sandwich". Yolanda also explains why the horse might not be responding to what the rider is asking, listing a couple possible reasons and then saying what to try adjusting the next go around. I can't wait to continue lessons, despite my sore muscles the day after!

Aside from the catnip mats, FHPS also carries these very sturdy, adorable orca dog stuffies in two sizes. These make the most perfect gifts and have held up well to my dog's chomping and tossing. Totally unexpectedly, they also carry a vegan dog food I'd been wanting my pup to try and it wasn't unreasonably priced! Their pet food selection is extensive and high quality and they have rows of both dry and canned dog and cat foods. I also recommend their locally made dog treats up by the cash register. My dog is a big fan of the squash and beet varieties. Employees are helpful, the store is clean, and parking is decent.

You know it's silly when even the coffee shop allows dogs.
