Newport Pier - Silver Surfer in the pier plaza ... RIP SS

Newport Pier is absolutely stunning, especially at sunset…read more On clear days, you can even see Catalina, and there's always a great mix of people out there, fishermen, walkers, surfers, and families, all adding to the atmosphere. It's the kind of place that instantly gives you that classic Southern California vibe. Moments like this are a big reason I love living here. January sunshine and sunsets at the pier are hard to beat, and it never gets old no matter how many times you come back.

We would grab drinks at one of the nearby bars and then walk on the bike trail afterwards. Then we would head over to the pier to enjoy the ocean breeze. Newport Pier was constructed in the 1940s and replaced the original pier that was built in the 1800s. It is 1,032 feet long and made of mostly wood. Today, Newport Pier is a place for people to fish or to go on a stroll while enjoying the sunny weather and the fresh ocean breeze. Even through this area is touristy, I still like this pier because it is not as crazy packed as some of the other popular piers like the ones in Santa Monica or in Huntington. It has been some time since I have visited Newport Beach. I was recently in town and grabbed a bite at the Crab Cooker. I caught a beautiful sunset while walking on the Newport Pier. Not much has changed around here since I was last in town. The Life Guard Headquarters and Dory Fleet still reside at the base of the pier. There are gift shops and restaurants within walking distance. I was able to grab some great photos of the sunset before heading out. I enjoyed my quick visit and walk down memory lane while passing through Newport Beach.

The Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden is a beautiful spot if you are looking for a peaceful walk…read moresurrounded by Japanese foliage and well-maintained landscaping. The garden features a large pond filled with koi, including around 30 big koi and what looks like hundreds of smaller ones they are raising. It is a relaxing place to watch the fish swim by and enjoy the scenery. One of the best parts is that visiting is free, but you do need to make a reservation ahead of time. They allow up to six people per reservation, and they typically do not take walk-ins, so plan ahead before coming. The garden itself is on the smaller side, and the walking path takes about 15 minutes at a casual pace. Still, there are plenty of places to sit and enjoy the surroundings. You will find charming bridges, small waterfalls, lily pads throughout the pond, and even a little Zen garden area. Even though it is compact, the peaceful atmosphere and the well-kept grounds make it a great visit. I highly recommend stopping by if you are in the area and want a quiet, refreshing escape.
