The menu item that caught my eye was the Hillbilly Surprise. I'd describe it as the Midwest's answer to Eggs Benedict: an English muffin topped with ham, an egg, and smothered in rich country gravy. Pair it with a side of crispy hash browns, and you've got the breakfast equivalent of "peas and carrots"--they just belong together. I am not trying to be a cheese snob, but we were basically across the Mississippi from Wisconsin, the cheese state, so that one hurt a little. Kim ordered the Hillbilly Surprise for $9.25, and unfortunately, we were a little surprised too. The same American cheese situation showed up on the hashbrowns, and the gravy tasted pretty canned. The three-egg omelet pricing was very fair at $6.25, with add-ins at 40 cents each, so I will give them credit there. The value is good -- I just wish the quality matched the charm of the place. Although is not anything fancy, it was always a very popular place inside the Kennedy Mall great for get togethers with friends and family while even a great place to watch sports. My husband and I recently visited Dubuque Mining Company while visiting Dubuque. This place still has great variety of burgers, sandwiches, and some dinner specials such as sirloin steak at affordable prices! The real reason people come here is for the incredible cocktails! Definitely try their most popular drink the "Cave In" which comes in a giant glass quart mason jar! The Cave in is seriously one of the most delicious fruity cocktails you will ever have giving you a nice buzz which is a mix of Gin, Vodka, Rum, orange juice and six mixers. Since the drinks are delicious but potent I wouldn't have more than two or have a safe way to get home! My husband and I started off with the cheese curds which were okay but it threw me off that the Dubuque Mining Company doesn't make their own restaurant style in house made ranch which I took a star off for. When I asked for ranch they only had Hidden Valley Ranch Packets. As a ranch dressing lover, I honestly judge restaurants on their ranch :) which I love dipping my fries in, eating with other sandwhiches, salads, and cheese curds. The bar area is about 3/4 of the space and there are a few tables for dining. The local crowd is very comfortable here - I didn't feel uncomfortable, but everyone here seems like they already knew each other. One of the guys sitting at the bar got up and start bussing a table... I guess he works there. Despite the crowd, the food did not take too long. The lone server was very busy, but she paid enough attention. I had the steak sandwich, which was seasoned well enough and soft enough to chew through. Also, they had tots and battered fries, which is an automatic +1 star upgrade! We also got a pizza to go - the green olives were very strong!
