Ellen was caring, effective, and helped us overcome challenges to reach our breastfeeding goals.

Working with Ellen for lactation support with my 3rd baby was one of the best decisions I have made!! Even though I had had two prior breastfeeding journeys, they both had their complications/challenges and I knew I wanted to have some support on-hand before my 3rd baby. Having a private, in-home lactation consultant was nothing short of amazing. Ellen even did a prenatal visit where she learned about my past breastfeeding experiences and challenges and listened to my goals and worries for this time around. In the past, I had only ever seen LC's in a "hospital outpatient" relationship and while those providers were experienced and competent, the setup really lacked continuity of care that I think is really important in a breastfeeding journey. Ellen did wonders to soothe my instinct to pathologize every little thing, and also brought me up to speed on the new evidence-based guidance for flange sizes and mastitis/clogged duct protocol as a lot had changed from my 1st two babies. She helped me ID a tongue tie much earlier than my 2nd baby, and with her updated protocol recommendations, I can now say I have made it 6 months EBF with no mastitis (something that was not the case at ALL my 1st two times). I really enjoyed working with Ellen and always looked forward to her visits. Even though it was my 3rd baby, I know that I would not be having such a positive breastfeeding journey if not for Ellen. She helped remove a lot of the anxieties and frustrations I had. Learning how to do "laid back" breastfeeding from the comfort of my own bed/couch was an absolute game changer and my baby breastfed with Ellen's support has had much better head/neck strength from the get-go from her nursing position. My body has been so much less sore/worn down from this position too. I wish I had discovered it years ago! If you are looking for lactation support - please consider working with Ellen beginning from late 3rd trimester - having that continuity of care from the first few days home from the hospital was an incredible gift. I can't recommend her enough from my experience! read more

I was disappointed by my experience with Ellen based on all the positive reviews I read here and elsewhere, so I wanted to give a review so others know what to expect. I reached out to Ellen after having seen multiple lactation consultants through my birthing hospital, the pediatrician's office, and virtually through Maven. I wanted to see someone in-person to get help with a baby who was having issues latching. I also was hoping for help with tandem feeding and creating a maintainable schedule for feeding/pumping since I have twins, and an in-home visit seemed like the best way to get hands-on guidance. The most useful part of the session was having Ellen weigh the breastfeeding baby so that I could see how much she was eating, but this is easy to do with a baby scale. She suggested a feeding position for the baby that was already latching, which wasn't very helpful since I already had success with other positions, but I did appreciate that she used pillows and seating from my house. 4-months in, I am still breastfeeding that baby but not with the position that Ellen suggested. My disappointment came with the other twin who had issues latching and was the main reason I reached out for help. She only tried to get him to latch twice during the entire session, and suggested interventions that I already knew about and had tried with no success (nipple shields, SNS, etc). I was looking for more guidance when it came to setting up a schedule for feeding/pumping as I was overwhelmed and exhausted, but her advice was vague not concrete and left me feeling just as confused as when she arrived. If you haven't spoken to a lactation consultant before, Ellen could provide useful information, but if you have already done research online or spoken to someone from the hospital, her information was redundant. Lastly, I would not recommend her for anyone with twins since she was skeptical about getting them on the same feeding schedule which is contrary to general twin advice and a necessary part of getting sanity with twins. Her lack of knowledge on that basic first foundation shows her inexperience with twins. read more

Ellen is fantastic! She met with me before I gave birth to help set a foundation for successful breastfeeding. She then helped me within days of giving birth and again to guide me on pumping. She is extremely responsive and equipped with many resources, videos, tips and tricks. I have already recommended her to friends! read more

Supportive, knowledgeable, pragmatic! Loved working with Happy Milk -- am already seeing positive results one week out (feeding more directly from the breast instead of pumping and going for a bottle). read more

Shortly after giving birth my daughter got dehydrated and spent some time in the NICU. We had difficulty with the latch and left the hospital using a nipple shield feeling like this was going to be our fate for our entire breastfeeding experience. My confidence was shattered and I was so apprehensive about weaning her off the shield but Ellen was so amazing! She was so kind with helping me and my daughter get on the same page with breastfeeding. She is so organized and knowledgeable and gave me all the resources I could possibly need to feel supported in breastfeeding again. Over two sessions working with her we were 100% off the nipple shield and using simple methods to calm both myself and my daughter to make breastfeeding a positive experience. She really provides comprehensive care to ensure your baby gets off to the best possible start and educates your entire family. She was so flexible to come see me at my home in Concord quickly and made herself so available via phone/text/email and I felt so comfortable reaching out if I needed her. I can't thank her enough for what she did for our little family!! Highly recommend her to anyone having a baby, the knowledge alone was priceless! read more

I wanted to add an update to my review after getting support from Ellen from March 2020 onwards for lactation support during covid days. Even over virtual visits Ellen continues to be a huge help in sorting issues with breastfeeding our newborn. I was really impressed with how well set up the virtual visits were, and felt like Ellen provided the same level of support that we received when she came to visit in person pre-covid. Another thing I wanted to add: with this baby we had some issues with feeding and weight gain. I was incredibly impressed with Ellen's continued follow up after our visit, asking how things were going, answering my detailed questions and concerns, offering advice, and continuing to follow up until issues were resolved. No other health provider I've interacted with or heard about offers this level of support. read more

As a new mom, I can say the three most important things to do before the baby is born is learn how to breast feed, decide on what strategy you are going to use to get your baby to sleep, and have plenty of diapers. I didn't think i would need help breast feeding.. i mean hard could it be? Well, Ellen was in our business networking group, so we felt obliged to use her services. I am SOOOO glad we did. Ellen came to our house when we were 8 months pregnant. She showed us different ways i could hold the baby and feed. She gave us a color print out of what the poop and pee should like like, and explained that it could help determine if baby was feeding well. She talked about frequency of feeding. That they suck, suck, swallow. Suggested i rub breast milk on my breasts post feed to prevent growth of yeast infections. So many important points i new nothing about. Then she came again to our home 4 days after our baby was born. She weighed our tiny tike before i fed her, and then after. And pronounced that she was drinking a hearty 2 oz. About the max that can fit in a tiny belly. We were concerned because she only fed about 4-5 minutes on one side and 2-3 on the second and then would fall asleep. Not the 10 on each that others mentioned. Turns out my flow of milk is super fast. Then Ellen put on her gloves and did a thorough exam of our baby's mouth. It turns out the tissue that connects her upper lip to her teach is short. That means she can't turn her lips out in the proper fish style to make a good seal on my breasts. This means she can swallow alot of air and then have burps or farts. Solution... easy, just use my finger to curl her upper lip out for her. She instructed me to relax my shoulder and neck which i raised up while feeding. We both were impressed by Ellen's technical knowledge, and so very grateful for her service. Our baby girl is now 10 months old and still breast feeding like a dream. Add Ellen's Happy Milk Lactation Consultant to you Baby Shower Registries! read more

This is an update to my review from 2019. I am on my second baby with Ellen as our lactation consultant. As mentioned in the first review, she radically transformed our breastfeeding experience by empowering us with proper technique for mom/baby and support through challenges (Eg decreasing milk supply, bottle feeding with pumped milk, etc). Breastfeeding is a pain-free experience that I thoroughly enjoy large in part to Ellen's support. She is highly knowledge, genuine and passionate about supporting moms/babies. We highly recommend Ellen! read more

We hired Ellen since our little one was not breast feeding. She was prompt with her visit and was able to demonstrate a new position to my wife (which eventually has not helped). She also introduced to us a handful of resources (videos, internet articles and CST referrals) which we found very helpful. However, our expectation was some sort of improvement for our little one which we failed to achieve. Our first visit, as i said, was a lot of information exchange so we were left back with many things to do and report back via email and phone calls. Over emails, the answers would be very generic with a stress on "we need to feed the baby by any means". We very well know that and our baby has been formula feeding, but that was not the purpose of us hiring her. Infact, on our recent phone call we were made clear not to call her back unless we pay her more (i.e. she wanted fees for phone & email consultation as well which per our understanding was a followup to the primary visit). One word of advice to all LC seekers. Please talk to the consultant prior as to what sort of value add he/she would bring in once hired. A home consultation is very expensive ($400) and little did we know that we would be paying such high fees to collect resources and not receive any actual help or tools & methods to improve breast feeding. Since then we visited another renowned lactation consultant at half the cost and we were introduced to several tools & methods with which we have been successful. We go to see what real life experience was and not just a bookful of information. For those individuals who are happy with Ellen great ... Our experience was very bad and it turned out to be very expensive with no results. Update: It is puzzling to read Ellen's response that she supported us until the third week post our first visit. For the sake of checking, i just went and checked our emails and she did not respond back to any of our emails in the third week. So, no we did not receive anything for FREE .. (and neither were we told that we would receive only 2 weeks of follow up support). Also, it is sad to learn from yelp response that our little one's condition is complicated. In her notes/report to us there was no mention of such. read more

I got Ellen's name from my midwife when I started having concerns about my daughter's frustration at the breast. She's my second and it was just so drastically different from the way my son had nursed. Ellen came over and we had an in depth appointment. I've heard of laid-back nursing, but never "needed" it for my son. However, it was a game changer for me and my daughter. We saw an improvement immediately! We saw Ellen once more at home, but she blew me away with how often she checked in on us! It was just great to know she was still thinking of us and making an effort to make sure we were improving. She also provided a folder full of information and resources. I wasn't able to cover the cost with insurance, but I want to say it was more than worth it to pay out of pocket! Most of all, thanks for the great experience Ellen! read more

Happy Milk Lactation Support - laid-back nursing! - Lactation Services Near Me

I called Ellen when I was having latching issues with my newborn son. She came to my house that afternoon. Her approach is professional, loving and thorough. She listened to me and sympathized and answered all my questions as I was tired, frustrated and concerned about my baby. This was my second baby and I had breastfed my first for 2 years so I didn't understand the problem. She weighed him and did a full assessment of his mouth and sucking. She showed me a new position called "laid back nursing" and gave me a treatment plan to follow-up and a folder of information. Her visit gave me new hope. After our visit she checked on me many times and gave all the information to my midwife. She suggested my baby get some "body work," or craniosacral therapy. I was hesitant, but with nothing else working I had to stay open minded. I got him the therapy and now he is breastfeeding like a pro as I type this review. Thank you to Ellen for showing us the way to a great breastfeeding relationship! read more

After another son born with tongue tie, I reached out to Ellen again. Our second experience was wonderful. Ellen helped me with engorgement and healing from early mastitis. We had an excellent experience with Ellen! My first child was born a few weeks early and needed extra help learning how to breastfeed. I cannot thank Ellen enough for all the help and the support she provided me. Revy is happily breastfeeding exclusively at 5 months old and gaining weight like a champ! Without Ellen, I don't think we would have ever made it this far! read more

Ellen is phenomenal -- my husband and I would both highly recommend her to any and all new parents! My first visit with Ellen was about two weeks after my daughter was born. Nursing was going really well, but I was experiencing a lot of neck/shoulder pain and I was curious about lactation consultations in general. Ellen was super responsive and helpful over the phone, and she came by the day after I reached out to her! My husband and I both enjoyed the visit and interacting with Ellen -- she's warm, professional, kind, intelligent, and calming. She showed me some nursing positions and customized them to fit my home and lifestyle, evaluated my daughter's latch and gave helpful suggestions for micro-adjustments, and weighed my daughter pre and post feeding so we could see how many ounces she was getting. Since then, I've corresponded with Ellen throughout with questions about pumping and feeding frequencies and much much more, and she's visited two or three more times to help with various elements of nursing. As a new parent, I used to think nursing was easy-peasy: baby latches, milk pours out of me like a fountain, baby's happy and all is good. I've been fortunate to have very minor questions and challenges along the way -- is she getting enough food? how do i find a comfortable position? what should i do to maintain my supply? how do i balance pumping and going back to work? There's so much trash out there on the internet, and having Ellen come over and confirm that you're doing everything right feels amazing. So even if nothing is wrong, even if nursing is going great for you, Ellen's services are still incredibly useful (and usually covered completely by your insurance!). She's also really great with babies :) read more

On a whim, I decided to attend Ellen's weekly Wednesday lactational support meeting. I was unsure of how much I'd learn because I had already breastfed my first child for about three years and am successfully breastfeeding my second child. My primary questions pertained to pumping enough milk for my younger son while at work in a hectic environment. Ellen recognized that it'd be unlikely I could change the environment at work, and so gave me some clever tips on how I could ensure I had enough milk for my son. For instance, she recommended that in the morning, when my son was first waking up and nursing from one breast, that I pump from the other breast and use that milk as part of his supply for when I left for work. This made total sense and was not overly cumbersome--after all, I'm already sitting down and nursing! I have utilized that tip--along with several others-- and they have made my pumping experience at work be less stressful! If you have any questions about breastfeeding, pumping, or well woman care, you should definitely attend the Wednesday meeting. They are held from 10:30-12:00 at Birthways in Berkeley. read more

I cannot recommend Ellen from Happy Milk highly enough. Like other yelpers, she scheduled me the day after I contacted her. She came to our home in Berkeley with her hospital grade scale to weigh our son and did an extensive interview about our nursing habits and pumping schedule. She gave me multiple helpful handouts, demonstrated positions and techniques, and was very knowledgeable about my son's tongue tie. Ellen gave us an easy and comprehensive bill for insurance reimbursement, and a detailed plan of care for us to follow. She even offers reduced fees if you buy a couple of sessions. Moreover, she got along great with our two dogs who loved her straight away! I would refer her to anyone looking for an expert in lactation in every sense of the word. I will definitely use her with my second! read more

Your search is over. I highly recommend Ellen. We worked together from birth and understanding breastfeeding for the first time, all the way through my returning back to work, and even after back to work when I was running into production issues. She is extraordinarily knowledgeable and supportive, and always had guidance that felt right for me and my baby regardless of what we were encountering over the 10 months that we worked together. The breastfeeding journey can bring both immense joy and also challenges, and with Ellen, you can look forward to celebrating many successes and having the support you and your baby need. read more

Ellen was wonderful! I was struggling to nurse my 4 week old and I found Ellen's assistance quite invaluable! She took her time talking to me and getting extensive background information about my daughter and me before we even started getting into the boob. She was encouraging, validating and supportive. I recommend her to all my new mom friends and will contact her again in the future if anything else pops up. read more

I feel very lucky to have Ellen as a lactation consultant. She is kind and very professional. If not her I probably would give up breastfeeding. Both, my newborn son and I had a hard time with the boobs business: me - painful and bleeding nipples, my son - non-stop hungry cry. In first visit Ellen was able to find the main issue of my breastfeeding challenges. She noticed that my son had a tongue tie and suggested to see a doctor. When this issue was fixed and Ellen visited us again to give me a helpful breastfeeding techniques, I finally could enjoy feeding my baby without pain and tears. After three months Ellen visited us again because my son stopped to gain weight and I was worry if he is getting enough milk. Ellen developed a plan for me how to bring my milk supply back and help my son to gain weight. Thank you Ellen! read more

Here's some of the things I love about Ellen 1. She is great about staying in contact with you. Thanks to her website and the info. she has on there about insurance's now being required to cover lactation help under the new healthcare law, I was able to pre-certify her with our provider. That took some extra time and commitment from Ellen to go through the process, but she was so fabulous about it and didn't mind. We had a lot of phone calls back and forth and through it all, I always felt like she was happy to help. 2. She's got the right tools When she arrived for our appointment she brought a hospital grade scale which she used to measure before and after breastfeeding weights, and she has a lot of helpful handouts. 3. She's super organized Before she left she went through an entire page, front and back, of a checklist detailing my "plan of care." It's got great things on it like relieving engorgement, skin-to-skin, positioning, latching techniques, etc. What's so helpful about it is that it helps make sure you don't miss any questions you might have forgotten during the appointment. Plus, she refreshes what you've been discussing and writes helpful notes to remember. 4. She knows her stuff Having already breastfed my first son, I thought I had this down, but Ellen completely expanded my breast-feeding horizons. When we first sat down and I showed her how I was breastfeeding, I complained about how my positioning was causing back pain and shoulder/neck pain and how I just wanted to breastfeed more comfortably. Welcome to "Laid-back nursing." Seriously, this is the moment where Ellen changed my life forever. She explained a whole different style of breastfeeding that's way more relaxing and comfortable. She even took the time to gather up pillows around my house and then position all of them around me to give me an exact idea of what it should feel like. I love breastfeeding so much more now. I actually look forward to when my little guy is ready to eat because now I'm way more comfortable and can just relax and let him eat longer. Goodbye hunching over and holding my breast with a chicken wing arm to keep proper latching and hello laid back nursing. 5. She is super personable and makes you feel comfortable For someone like me, breastfeeding is kind of a personal thing. I'm sorry all you bold breastfeeders out there, but I'm more of a nursing wrap kind of person, so it was important that I really feel comfortable with Ellen. From the first few moment after she walked through the door I knew she was someone I felt like I could open up to and talk with about something so personal. 6. She comes to your house Seriously, enough said when you are completely sleep deprived from just having a new baby. When you think about how many times you breastfeed a day, it is totally worth it to get some one-on-one help from Ellen. Trust me. She will change your life! read more

Ellen has been such a gift to our family! Our little boy had trouble latching from the start so I had to use a nipple shield. Luckily, Ellen was able to come to our home on our second day back from the hospital. She was able to give us great tips for breastfeeding and also noticed our little one was tight in the mouth and recommended CST to help him latch. The combination of Ellen + CST helped him latch in no time without using the nipple shield anymore. I am so grateful to Ellen! Not only is she knowledgable, but she has a wonderful and calming personality. She instilled so much confidence in me as a breastfeeding mama. Once we got over that hump, Ellen also was able to help with pumping. I highly recommend Ellen. She has been invaluable to us. read more

I highly recommend working with Ellen if you're having breastfeeding issues. I've worked with Ellen for both of my kiddos, and she's been tremendously helpful each time. She came to my home right away after I reached out to her, helped me find comfortable breastfeeding positions, and helped me fix shallow latching by my babies (the shallow latching was causing so much pain), so that I could heal and breastfeed properly. She's extremely responsive -- either by text or by email -- and just a wonderfully calming presence to have during those exhausting newborn weeks. read more

We called Ellen in crisis after my midwife told me my baby "couldn't lose any more weight." She was born small and premature, and lost as much weight as my midwife said she could by her fourth day of life. I left the midwife's appointment feeling horrible, stressed, and worried about my baby. The midwife may have been trying to help, but her words simply caused stress that wasn't productive and (as we learned from Ellen) wasn't needed. Ellen came that night. Her presence was calming, and the information and help she provided not only helped us help the baby to gain weight beautifully and quickly, but also eased my fears completely. She showed us exactly how to know whether baby was gaining enough, how to tell if she was getting enough milk in a feeding, and how to manage the intense nipple pain I dealt with in the first few weeks. Ellen was wonderful, thorough, clear and supportive. Later, we found out the nipple pain was caused in part by a fast birth, which lead to a neck injury in baby, causing her to latch poorly. Though no one (four lactation consultants, two cranio sacral therapists, two midwives, and two doctors) we spoke to caught this, Ellen's suggestions were helpful and minimized the pain from latching with an injured baby. The two things that most helped us were her visit and a 2-minute chiropractic adjustment at North Oakland Chiropractic Clinic. She provided the information we needed to submit our appointment for insurance coverage, and it couldn't have been easier or smoother to communicate with her. She was thorough, quick to call back, professional, and clearly loves what she does. read more

Ouchie ouchie ouch! That was me before working with Ellen from Happy Milk. After being home from the hospital with my newborn for only a few days, I knew that I needed some additional support to make things work better for the both of us. Ellen's housecall was incredibly helpful. First of all, Ellen is very knowledgeable and well trained about lactation support. It is clear that she has a lot of experience working with different clients and and their conditions, and it is helpful that she can share from her own personal experiences as well. Second of all, she travels with her own scale! Since my newborn's weight dropped a lot I was concerned about tracking her weight gain and it was so wonderful that we could weigh her in the comfort of my home, before and after feeding, so that I could see how much milk she was taking in. Ellen taught me some great tips to improve our latch that made an immediate difference. But the best part of all is that Ellen is incredibly warm and down to earth, supportive and non-judgemental, and just a lovely person. I'm so thankful for her help in getting my little one and me off to a great start. read more

I'd like to recommend Ellen Schwerin of Happy Milk as a fabulous lactation consultant. I am an experienced mom having breastfed my first son for 14 months. So when I was experiencing pain as my second son was latching I knew that something had to change fast. I called her on a Sunday evening and she was at my house by 10am the next day. She quickly discovered that my son was not sticking his tongue out far enough and gave me some "tongue training" exercises. 2 days later my son was latching without pain.
