Happy Lemon; the salted cheese haven of my existence. They've since opened a location that's closer to me, but that doesn't mean that I can't still come down here to get my Berkeley fix too. I've said it once and I'll say it again: Happy Lemon makes me a happy girl. And, boy was I excited when they finally started to expand into the East Bay. It was like salted cheesy dreams all over again. Yes I go cray for that salted cheese because it's so motha effin' DELICIOUS. A wonderful creation from GAWD, and I'm so glad that they're in my hood now. This location is so stinking cute! It's so colorful and bright. Located right smack dab in the heart of Downtown Berkeley where all of the college kids like to play. They have a TV screen that lets you track the progress of your drink preparation. They give you these cute little "happy lemons" with order numbers on them that you bring back when redeeming your drink. Free WiFi and friendly service! I can dig it. They've got a nice variety of drinks available from your standard milk teas, to lemon specialities, to fruit teas. I'm a big fan of their taro with fresh milk. They use real taro root which is a weakness for me. I didn't really care for the taro root when I started drinking this, but now it's become addicting. And that salted cheese... mm mm MMMM! Just slay my life. That. Salted. Cheese. Is. LIT! The perfect combination of sweet and savory and everything that you need in your life right now. It's so damn good. The kids who work here are always focused and always super nice. The location isn't the most accessible if you're coming by car, but it's just a few feet away from the Downtown Berkeley Bart line. There's something I like to do to avoid driving during commute hours. I stop by Telegraph or Shattuck, and I walk and walk until an eatery calls my name. On this night, the thing that got me was something so typical. Milk tea. And oh my goodness I really love milk tea. So you bet I had to stop here and get myself a drink. I've been to other locations for this franchise so I was quite hopeful that this particular location would be just RIGHT for my sugar loving heart. Happy Lemon is just a short walk from the Downtown Berkeley Bart station. It's a short walk from where I parked at Allston Garage. It took me less than five minutes to get there. I love that! Quick and accessible! I must have entered during the down time or something. I haven't been in Berkeley as often as I used to be so maybe the days and the you know - busy times have changed. Anyways, I come right in and there's no line! I see two people working up front. One's cleaning and the other made eye contact me and was ready to take my order. I went to my usual Green Milk Tea. No adjustments made to the sugar and ice levels. I added some boba. I made the size large. I decided to try some of the snacks this time. I went for the waffle. There's a ton of flavors and the one I couldn't ignore was Oreo. I love me some Oreos. Anyways, I barely had to wait. It all came to me so fast. JASMINE MILK TEA ON POINT. It was so sweet but not too sweat where I could taste the green tea. The boba was super fresh. It wasn't super chewy nor was it all clumped together and hard to slurp up. It was a hot day and I wanted smth non-milky and this dragon fruit yakult (yogurt) smoothie was calling my name! I requested the crystal boba instead of the usual boba because the staff told me that the boba is cooked in honey and it having a softer chewing texture than the crystal boba. Since it was my first time here, I ordered the sweetness to be the default to see if I like it as it is. Both drinks were very refreshing, and even though the cafe was slightly humid, it cooled up down within minutes. The lemon yakult slushie was good! I love Happy Lemon! My favorite drinks so far are the A4 Oolong Tea w/ Salted Cheese, A2 Black Tea w/ Salted Cheese, and D11 Okinawa Fresh Milk w/ Boba. Their salted cheese is really one of a kind. They're well known for their salted cheese so I highly recommend ordering a drink that has it. I'm sure you'll love it! I'm also obsessed with their bubble waffles, particularly the matcha flavor! I usually order a mango matcha or a Oreo milk tea with salted cheese and it usually comes out perfect. However, this time my order was completely made wrong. I wasn't upset about it, but simply asked the cashier AND manager if I can get it made correctly.. the simple answer was no and was instructed to buy another drink. Customer service was not up to par. Any restaurant, boba shop, or any food establishment for that matter would replace the mistake with no questions asked. The China-based boba chain Happy Lemon is one boba drink franchise that has decided to go all-in with its planned domination of the boba scene in the Bay Area with a slew of new locations throughout the region in the past five years, including this location in downtown Berkeley which opened four years ago. What makes Happy Lemon stand apart from other purveyors of boba is that their specialty is having a wide variety, nine to be exact, of salted cheese tea. The concept combining cheese with tea, may sound terrible, but in this case, the "cheese" topping is more like a thick layer of creamy, salted foam that tops each drink. It's made with cream cheese, whipped cream, milk and a hint of rock salt. In this case, it kind of sounds good doesn't it? Although I'm always down to sample something outside of my comfort zone, I'm still a Fruit Tea lover at heart so I went with their G6, which was their Strawberry Black Tea, which for a 20 ounce large was $4.75 served with lychee jelly (50 cents extra). My friend went with a menu item on their Top 10, coming in at number 8, their A7, which was their Matcha Latte with Tiramisu Salted Cheese ($5), which at our cashier's suggestion, was order with a boba topping (50 cents extra). During times that we are currently living in, I was still expecting a large crowd, even though inside all of the tables were folded up and unable to be occupied. The manager says right now, it's been slow, since their main clientele are not currently in class or even in the city of Berkeley to enjoy their favorite boba drinks. So that would explain the prompt service as our drinks came out in mere minutes. I absolutely loved my Strawberry Black Tea with equal parts sugar, at a requested 75 percent, which I was feeling adventurous, and lychee bits. Our drinks were in two words: refreshing and filling. My friend said his drink was so filling that it could have been a meal into itself. I would consider us satisfied customers and I know you will be too with the wide variety of drinks that are offered at Happy Lemon. Parking in the area can be bit of a challenge so taking Bart to the downtown Berkeley station is a nice option. Hopefully business will pick back up soon, as places like Happy Lemon deserve to a huge success. These are my top go-to drinks: -Light oolong tea w/ salted cheese -Milk tea tea w/ salted cheese -Green tea w/ salted cheese -Green Milk Tea The salted cheese foam is not expected to be "cheesy". It mainly makes the drink creamier. If I get boba, I would go lighter on sweetness 75%. They have point system that you can potentially redeem for a free drink. The free drink redemption covers any drink (including large size), but any additional toppings with be extra charge. I've never known lemons to be happy. To me, they've always been quite sour-- the kind of sour that makes your lips pucker. I came here close to closing so I am understanding of how the could have run out. If you like the drinks with the cream cheese stuff on top, this is the best place to go for them. The cheese topping is whipped and light but still creamy. It is also salted which is different from many other boba places. The saltiness is pretty strong but if you mix it in your drink, it adds a great complexity. The saltiness makes the sweetness taste even sweeter. It sounds fake but it's true and you should try it. I got the milk tea with salted cheese and boba. The milk tea itself was pretty nice. First time I had happy lemon was in SJ, and I loved it! So I was excited to visit this one in Berkeley. When I heard about cheese foam I was like everyone else, apprehensive and not really about it LOL. But I'll try anything at least once. To my surprise, I loved it!! Found out about this Happy Lemon location when I was on my way to Purple Kow. I had always wanted to try Happy Lemon to see what all the hype was on their salted cheese toppings, however, the nearest location was in SJ/Cup'to area-- So glad they decided to post one up in Berks! They're close to the Downtown Berkeley Bart station too! Extra brownie points for that. They have a good amount of drinks to choose from--Salted cheese series, fruit teas, milk tea and fresh lemon teas (just like any other boba shop). You can sample the salted cheese with tea prior to ordering if you're curious or indecisive on what to order (like me). Most popular seemed to be black tea with the toppings. You're supposed to sip continuously or take it in a shot(dont stop, bottoms up)! The flavors intermingling together paired well. Salty and sweet-ish tea? Who the hell thought of this concoction?! Happy Lemon, duh. I ended up ordering their Black tea with Salted cheese and boba. The cashier rang me up $5+ for a large and handed me a plastic lemon with a # on the back as a token to redeem upon swooping up le drank. I wanted keep it; cuz it was cute AF. They have televised menus and an order up/in process screen to keep things in check. The drink comes with a plastic lid almost similar to ones you use for hot coffee. Stab your straw through it and drink, or you can mix it up. Do what you want, its your life. The boba consistency was perf, and have a slight sweet flavor to it. Overall, I enjoyed and approved of the drink. I'd would definitely stop by Happy Lemon again and try their other drinks. However, it can be a little expensive and the wait can be a while sometimes. The BEST boba I've ever had. I'm super picky when it comes to Boba and I reeeeeally enjoyed what I had here. I ordered the D5 which is Boba Milktea wjth Puff Cream. The guys working here were nice (probably University students?) and made my drink very fast with a lot of puff cream and the PERFECT texture of boba. I've tried a few boba spots in the Bay Area and this location was definitely the best. I can't stand when boba is overcooked and gummy vs chewy. The boba here was chewy and perfectly cooked. I wasn't sure how I would feel about the puff cream but I'm so glad I ordered it- so creamy and sweet with a hint of saltiness. Delicious!! this happy lemon has the quality i expect from the chain, but i'm always disappointed by the experience/customer service at this location. last time i came here the waffle machine was broken so i could only order half of what i was going to. this time they were out of boba so I had to modify my order to exclude the part i was looking foreword to most. part of why i choose happy lemon most of the time is because i think their boba is consistently good. if i can't order boba, i'll just go somewhere else where the base price is lower. i hate paying quality prices that exist to offset the cost of quality ingredients, when the ingredients i want are absent. either the management here doesn't know how to order inventory and maintain equipment, or the staff is lazy. read more

I've been to a few other "Happy Lemon" shops around the states and this one has to be my favorite. The customer service is awesome! It was nothing but positive vibes! Yes! I got my "Mango Lemon Slush". If this is your first time here on a hot sprint/summer day, order that and you won't regret it! Thank me later! The only downfall is parking.
