I didn't know what to expect when coming here, but it kind of reminded me of, not to sound rude, but Chuck E Cheese, like the nostalgia of it (only because there's a small arcade in the corner of the restaurant). There's a lot of seating there, and when I went it was fairly empty. They have a buffet from Monday through Friday, from 11ish am to 2 pm. I went when the buffet was about to close, so opted out to order a taco pizza. It's initially a regular pizza with taco toppings and tortillas chips on it. We were in Bettendorf this weekend for baseball, and many people recommended trying Happy Joes. The restaurant was clean, although a bit worn. Servers were friendly. Everyone said we had to try the Taco Joe pizza so we did. It's a pizza with a bean based sauce, taco meat, sausage, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and Doritos. Overall, it was pretty good. The pizza was very cheesey and had a good flavor. The price was high for what you got. The most disappointing thing was the Doritos, which just got in the way and kept falling off. The reason I rate it a three star versus five is because of the price. I ordered a small meat pizza and I couldn't believe the price. At that price there better be plenty of toppings It cost more than $17. That is absolutely ridiculous for a small pizza. So because of the amount of toppings, and the cost I will not go back. Well my old friend, you have made your way to the pile of mediocre. So, I found myself on the road and meeting an old friend for lunch. We stepped into this location with a bit of nostalgia as this area had been in the heart of our past. The layout had been changed and the decor may have been updated from 80's weirdness to 90's weirdness, but nevertheless, the ambiance is decidedly mediocre chain restaurant. Who cares about the decor anyway, I was there for the 'za. You go to the counter and order, then sit down and someone brings you the order. The high point was both the cashier and the waitress were absolutely friendly and gracious - 100% excellent customer service with a smile. If you know anything about this establishment, you know that their go-to is the Taco Pizza. The Taco Pizza, had in my mind, been the gold standard for comparison to others. With a refried bean base, some sausage and seasoned beef you get some iceberg lettuce, chunks of tomatoes and broken up taco chips with a handful of taco sauce packets (The Taco Supreme adds sour cream, onions and black olives). So we get the pizza and it's okay, really okay. Crust is crispy and chewy with a good tangy bite and the ingredients mix together well, but it's was missing something - so I added more taco sauce and still missing something. In the end I enjoyed my food and lunch, but chalk this on up to good memories more than good food. read more

There's different types of pizza people. You're either a crust, sauce, or toppings person and this chain only hits the mark for the toppings people. The sauce is just okay but the dough is downright tasteless. The Canadian bacon and sausage do have a good flavor but the delivery mechanism surrounding those things is just really poor. The product overall is really overpriced. You're getting charged $30 for a $10-15 pizza. At the higher price point I was expecting maybe a focus on really high quality ingredients or more attention to detail throughout the process but you still get the same tasteless tomatoes and veggies that you'd get at any fast food burger place. Like the tomatoes aren't even cored properly you still get hard yellow bits from the center for example. On the taco pizza I had the chips were stale as well. This place has been around for a long time so I guess people are going for nostalgia but other newer places are just killing it for a whole lot less. read more

Stop don't eat here!! Gas stations in this community have better pizza!! I grew up eating happy Joe's. This has always been my favorite pizza. Unfortunately there have been some change is made. I have recently had frozen pizzas that taste better. This is not an exaggeration. Happy Joe's has done a disservice to themselves. The changes they have made to the recipe is not good. You now need to order extra sauce extra cheese to get the equivalent of what was once considered normal. Don't take for granted the fact that they will charge you for this. It doesn't mean they are always going to give it to you even though they charge you. This was the case last night when I ordered my pizza. I did not get my extra sauce and extra cheese I was changed for. The pizza delivered to my house was absolutely subpar. I do not plan on patronizing this establishment again. They are not only serving subpar food but they are extremely overpriced for what you get. We have much better establishments in town that are a lot more reasonable in price. We lived Bettendorf many years ago and loved Happy Joes. My daughter grew up here and is now 29.She has moved away too and lives on the west coast. She has the best memories of birthday parties here and putting a quarter in the slot to watch the train run the rail around the ceiling. It wasn't a cookie cutter pizza place, it was Happy Joe's, the best pan pizza and ice cream too. We recently came back for a visit, and were so sad to see it had changed. Yes, 15 years had gone by. The pizza was still the best pan anywhere, but the train was gone and the store remodeled I guess awhile back, to look like any other chain restaurant. Gone was the quaint pizza parlor charm. BRING BACK THE TRAIN! Children crave that cute little train. Maybe if we all start writing about it here, someone in Happy Joe's management will remember visiting Bettendorf when they were a kid too. We visited this location for the first time. We often visit the Quad Cities and we typically go to the Happy Joes location in LeClaire. But, we went to this location this time because it was close to our hotel and the weather was bad. One thing I noticed is this location doesn't have the mini-arcade like the LeClaire location does. However, this location has a yogurt station that dispenses different flavors of frozen yogurt. This is a nice location with great service. read more
