We've been eating here for 25 years. My husband has always loved their beef pepper steak and they do have good eggrolls. We started having issues many times with their fried rice two years ago, tasting very sour rotten. They told us that's normal it's the soy sauce. We began ordering it with light soy, and haven't had a problem anymore. We did have to quit ordering anything with shrimp in it due to getting shrimp that were rotten tasting . Today we ordered two lunch menu beef pepper steaks, and one lunch menu teriyaki chicken . The pepper steak was terrible, both of them and the teriyaki chicken was absolutely not teriyaki sauce. It was some type of a bright red really nasty sweet sauce and it was battered and fried I never had teriyaki chicken that way. I told her this is not teriyaki chicken. This is not teriyaki sauce and she said our teriyaki sauce is different from anyone else's anywhere you've never had any like ours . Yeah that's because it's not teriyaki sauce. I've also noticed many times the bill way way higher than it should've been. Today our bill should have been $37.85 pre tax but was $50.05! And my husband has always been an over tipper so she's always been tipped extremely well. I checked every item and added it up, then confronted the waitress we were over charged $12.20 for 3 lunch meals. She said we were charged an extra.$2.50 to leave the vegetables out of my son's $8 (lunch special) beef pepper steak. Then she said we were charged $2 per person for light soy and egg in the fried rice that is included in the lunch meal. Egg is included in fried rice we never ask for any extra. She made up charges to add to our meal to get an extra $12.20 out of us. Another guy at the table across from us said as he was walking out that he felt he had been way overcharged for his two meals, and was wondering the same thing. We have eaten here many times over many years and rated it 4/5 + constantly. However, our last 2 recent visits: March 27, 2026 score 3/5. April 2nd 2026 score 2/5. Our last visit on April 2nd 2026 was seriously bad. We came in at 12:05pm (just after noon). Walking, we were told to seat ourselves. There were about 3 other tables with customers. After about 5 mins the young 2 hair color Asian female waitress arrived. She was a 180 opposite to her normal self. She was blunt, somewhat rushed and bossy. Like she had a problem bothering her. Our Ice Tea and Meal order was taken. 4 Egg rolls, and a large shared Chicken Fried rice. 6 mins later our BURNT egg rolls arrived. I mean burnt Black on the ends and very dark over the rest. Then a few mins later the Ice teas arrived. Yes after the Egg Rolls. About 5-7 mins later, what they called Chicken Fried Rice arrived. It was lacking any flavor, and the normal ingredients. The rice was WHITE, not darken as it is normally. The looked very white like it had just come from a pot of cooked rice and not been skillet cooked. The rice was hard on the bottom, like it all had been rewarmed. Heck I could have cooked a better meal using Minute Rice, Wally World Chicken, a egg, and Soy sauce. We will give the place a few months. IF it is still open June/July we'll try it again. read more

Happy China is an inexpensive basic operation with decent food. Their take-out operation is off-the chain. Both times I have picked up, there have been at least five other take-out customers. Yet even on a Friday night, they pick up the phone and are friendly and cheerful. Plus they have several tables of customers going as well. read more

My one star is not because of the food, which I like, but because you have to take a calculator with you and check the bill. They ad 15% to 20% more to the ticket which is not very noticeable unless you are paying attention. When confronted, they have an excuse but eventually refund the overcharge. This has happened to us more than once. Always check your bill, which is a good practice anyway. read more

The people are so friendly. The food is good. The inside of the restaurant is not very inviting. They keep it very dark which makes me wonder about its cleanliness. We always order takeout. As we were passing through Madison, we saw the great reviews and thought this was the place for us. We (two people) arrived right at 3. We walked in, the server said very very little as she grabbed two menus and put us in a booth. She walked away immediately. She came back after 5 minutes. We ordered water and spring rolls for a starter. There was still zero expression or conversation. The server lapped the restaurant a few times, making eye contact but never stopping to get our order even though we did not have our phones out, had smiles on our faces, and our menus were placed in a way indicating that we were prepared. Once she said, "I'll be back." Returning around 3:30, she looked unhappy to be working. She looked at us and waited for us to order. "Two of the cashew shrimp lunches, please, with wanton soup." She replied and said lunch was over. We hadn't even noticed the time noted at the top. We apologized quickly, telling her we wanted the same thing just somewhere else in the menu. She walked away rather than waiting 10 seconds, even though there was no one else (at this point it had cleared out) to serve. She came back later. We ordered the dishes and another appetizer. Let me tell you-- THAT FOOD WAS DELICIOUS. The appetizers were all on the table by 3:45. At 4, the main dish came out. It was an abundance of food, all piping hot. EXCELLENT. So our thoughts summed up: the food is great, the wait is long, and the service is just not welcoming (we have worked in the industry for 5 years, so we have realistic expectations). We still tipped 25% because the menu prices were low and felt like the establishment was family owned. Maybe the service will be better for others. read more

One star is generous. We ate dine in here once. The food was good but the restaurant was very dark and rather warm. AC was set to a fairly warm temperature so it felt hot and muggy inside. A couple of weeks later we are passing through Madison and decided to get take out Chicken lo mein and Mongolian beef. We arrive home and discover very poor quality food. The beef in the Mongolian beef is rank and rotten. I cannot imagine how the cook didn't know that meat was rotten. The smell was horrendous! This restaurant is a no go for us. read more

Easily the worst Chinese restaurant we've ever been to. Where to start? Well, it's a rundown dirty space in disrepair. The service is cold at best...just an unhappy space. No alcohol. The food is awful, mushy broccoli, no garlic, ginger or spices to give the food any life. Just poorly prepared stir fry sitting in brown cornstarch-laden congealing gravies. A VERY GOOD CHOICE! When we initially rolled up to this restaurant, it gave me pause. However, I have learned that older buildings are really not so scary after all. The good news is that they are old buildings so they have great character and architecture. The bad news is that they are old buildings so they don't always have the modern conveniences that we have grown to appreciate. Although I love a beautifully appointed building with great decor and ambiance, I'm willing to cast that aside for a really good meal. We entered the small building which was dark, but nice and comfortable. After being seated we were greeted by our waitress, the Commandant. I'll explain later. We ordered the moo goo gai pan minus the corn, the general's chicken, (husband's choice) and a serving of the spring rolls. Additionally we received the egg roll and a cup of sweet and sour soup which came with our lunch orders. The commandant was very serious, she had a flat tone and walked with the posture and presence of a general. When that food hit the table, only her arm below the elbow moved. It was crisp and precise. As she walked away, I looked to see if she would execute a pivot and turn and to my surprise, she did not. On to the food: My main dish was perfectly executed as it was hot, delicious, lightly seasoned, with generously portioned fresh vegetables and white chicken. I found the egg roll too salty so I did not eat it ( I only eat the inside anyway), the spring rolls however were absolutely delicious and contained unexpected pieces of shrimp. Was excited to try this place after reading all the great reviews. Took my son o n a Thursday at 1:00 so to miss the lunch crowd. Only a couple of patrons in the restaraunt. Quickly seated and orders placed. Very short wait time on food. Waitress appeared to be wanting to be anywhere else but at work. Not friendly at all!!! Visited this restaurant while with my parents and extended family. Not a buffet, but the platters served are so large that we were able to share what turned out to be excellent food. Even my picky grandsons were able to find something to enjoy at this restaurant. We all ate our fill, then took home leftovers; so this was a great value. The orange slices served at the end were a big hit with everyone, as well. I would definitely go again. read more

I live in Madison and have enjoyed happy china for several years. A lot of people in the area have mixed reviews of the restaurant. Personally a lot of what I know gives people hesitation, is the location and atmosphere of the restaurant. It's in an older building and looks older. However the food is great, service is good and as far as cleanliness I've been in much worse places. I have also noticed happy china consistently receives high food inspection scores generally in the 90s whereas the other Chinese restaurant in town Hong Kong express has received extremely low to failing scores. Some of the best Chinese food we have ever had (and we've eaten in many major cities including Chinatown in NYC and SF). They attempt to create ambiance with a fish tank and some decor but it is a low budget make over. This seems typical of Chinese restaurants , so while it's not fancy, it's clean and average.
