Great hidden gem! Right near our hotel; we were skeptical because the parking lot didn't have a lot of cars but we were pleasantly surprised. Food was fresh and fast. Not greasy at all! Quiet and clean restaurant. We got sweet and sour chicken, general tso chicken, crab Rangoon, wonton soup and spring rolls. It's next to a truck stop so lots of take out and our food came in to go containers, but other than that we had no complaints. They don't serve alcohol so if you're looking for a drink all they have is water and soft drinks. When we visited their ice machine was broken but again not a major issue to us. Really chill owners. They hail from Maryland near the Capitol. Uncle went from cooking for Diplomats to semi-retired cooking for truckers and road trippers through the Carlisle Pennsylvania 76 Turnpike. Once he told me he was from Teochew, Guangdong China, everything became more evident. Uncles an OG Master chef. Teochew people influenced the cuisine of Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore. It is in their blood to make quality everyday food. That fried rice .......was a masterclass on how to make fried rice; stirred together with house made Canton BBQ Pork Chasu, every rice fresh overnight, coated with just enough msg & soy sauce, and blended just right with peas, onions, garlic, scallions, carrots. If you were to order Indonesian Fried rice, what was served here today would be the unapologetic OG form factor. Masterclass fried rice. Thank you Uncle. The Sauteed Beef with Onions is not your typical Mongolian Beef, this is how Taiwanese Uncles on the street would stir fry beef with onions. So it's got that little bit of oyster sauce, hoisin, garlic, butter, scallions, onions, and Lee Kum Kee black pepper sauce for the cheating taste....then again I tasted Taiwanese Sacha in there, but who cares, the dish tasted like a walk down memory lane, when an OG Taiwanese owner chef used to make sizzling black pepper beef back in the late 90s in Rowland Heights California down at the food hall in Pacific Plaza. And that's when I popped the question to the owner, "You Taiwanese?" And he responded "Teochew," which is close enough. The cultures are mutually intelligible with the Southern Min of Fujian. And many of uncles peers are from Taiwan, which explains his Mandarin accent. As for the egg drop soup. Apparently Uncle doesn't like Egg Drop soup, so he intentionally fails at making egg drop soup-- too much eggs clustered together, soup base is to gelatinous because of Tapioca Starch overdose. I would increase the Green Giant Sweet Canned Corn, pop in more white pepper and msg. Uncle clearly gave up. I know he's withholding his potential. General Tso's is almost perfect, with the breading not completely holding together for an even crunchy crispy. The dried red chillis elevated the entire dish with the intense heat. Thus far, Canaan Restaurant down in West Covina, California has the Orange Beef, General Tso's down to the tee. In my memories, the General Tso's from Grand Gardens in Billings Montana prepared by the Patriarch Chef Alice's Dad is a trip worthy meal. Miss those days living up in Billings. Alas the Triple Delight. A mix of various vegetables, tossed in a citrus Chasu bbq pork brown sauce, but with a heavy garlic base, if you like a savory pungent throw Everytime in chop-suey style chicken, beef and shrimp dish, this would be a good option. Although taste wise, id give it a 4/5, not the best triple delight I've had, but fair enough. I am too full. Uncle and Auntie are a gift to this community. COVID really hurt every Chinese Restaurant Owner Operator. The same issues they deal with, every other Chinese restaurant across the United States is also dealing with it. They are of a generation, that will likely take the art of American Chinese Cuisine with them into retirement and the days of Chinese American restaurants outnumbering McDonalds will become a bygone age. A lack of workers willing to step into the high octane stressful restaurant business, a lack of cooks willing to grind their skills behind a wok, the lack of young people willing to take on a server position. These are the very same troubles facing every Chinese restaurant in the United States. And so the only option is to settle, run a 2 person show, with no additional help.....where have I seen this picture? Last week in Memphis at the Hong Kong Restaurant. My advice? Visit for Chinese American restaurants; they might all just disappear. Millennials won't step up to the plate and taking over legacy restaurants. Gen X is too busy saving for thier 401Ks...Gen Zs will never step foot into a kitchen unless you paid them 20,000 USD a month...our society is f*ckt... read more

Stopped here with a friend on our way back home to New England. We had the General Tso's chicken and the Shrimp w/garlic sauce. Both very good and fresh. We spoke with other patrons and they all raved about their meals. The only drawback was it was hard to get in parking lot when the trucks going in to the truck stop starts backing up. First of all, this Chinese place is right next to Love's truck stop which was a super plus! We still parked our huge semi in their parking lot. Hesitant to try because of the reviews, I was craving Chinese on this Valentine's Day so I figured that's why the parking lot was a little empty. Ordered House Lo Mein, Shrimp Fried Rice, Fried Chicken, Chicken on a stick, Fried Dumplings, Mixed Veggies with White Rice, and Hunan Beef with White Rice. Everything was cooked fresh, veggies fresh, not over cooked like most Chinese places. Sauce was perfection, no need to add soy sauce or any extra sauces except chili oil for spice. Well we r back in town. Got some truck repairs now here to eat. Then we will head to Pittsburg. I wanted to try something else beside general tsao so I'm trying orange chicken dinner today. We picked up food from this restaurant last night. The restaurant is located next to the Love's gas station and Wendy's on Harrisburg Pike. We ordered two dinner combinations of general tso chicken and shrimp fried rice. We enjoyed the chicken and the rice, but I liked the fried rice a lot more as I found the chicken to be a bit hard and have too much breading. The total came to $34. We had enough food for two day's worth of meals, so we felt that the price was justified. We're still missing some of our Chinese takeout options from Maryland, but we're happy to have found a decent American Chinese food restaurant near our new home. read more

I have a complex relationship with American-style Chinese restaurants. I don't like sticky sweet food so I'm usually dreading many of the dishes because so many restaurants cater to what American's have come to consider to be standard Chinese fare. Every year, we head out for Chinese with my parents and my kids, on Christmas night. We arrived and only found a few others in the restaurant. I guess many truckers aren't on the road at that time and most other people are at home. So, we ended up with a great table near the front with a large lazy Susan in the middle. It was a great way to share dishes. We all ordered different dishes. Beef curry, sweet and sour pork, sweet and sour chicken, etc. All standard fare. All of them were excellent. The beef curry was ordered a little spicy (we have a group that likes everything from not spicy to flaming hot) and it was a perfect level for everyone. All of the dishes were good. The vegetables were cooked well - meaning not mushy and not underdone. Nice and crispy. Here's where I give them more than an average score. I don't like a lot of American-style Chinese food because so much of it is just sweet and it lacking flavor, complexity, etc. I was absolutely shocked to find their dishes to be well balanced. Even the ones that are traditionally sweet. I normally avoid all "sweet and sour" dishes because they are usually too sweet, not sour, bland, and mushy. Not here. The battered meat was crispy and the sauce wasn't overly sweet. It also had some sour flavor. Our server was super efficient and friendly. When the found out one of our people is allergic to shrimp, she made sure to tell the kitchen so there was no cross-contamination. So, 3.5 for the food (it's above average) and 4.5 for the service. I mean, honestly it's pretty lackluster but they're open late, and walking distance for us truckers. The service was excellent, and the food was hot and fresh. We ordered crab rangoons, bbq spare ribs, house lo mein, young chow fried rice, and eggplant tofu. The crab rangoons were hot and crispy, although the shell they use was a bit thick, not light and crispy like I'm used to. There was, however a very generous amount of cream cheese filling which was nice. I wouldn't recommend the spare ribs. Dry and not much flavor. It sounds so good in your head I know and I love ribs, but they were my least favorite item. Even left a whole half rib uneaten, that says something. The fried rice and lo mein were both a little greasy. The fried rice looked kind of wet and soggy and could've used some more seasoning. Flavor wise, the noodles definitely won, although almost a little too much garlic. Generous with the meats/shrimps/etc so that's a plus. The eggplant tofu was HUGE. I am going to have eggplant leftover for DAYS. My bf doesn't like eggplant so it's all me. The tofu was fried nice and crispy, the eggplant was a tiny bit overcooked but it did have that nice sear and butteriness to it. I believe the owner served us, he was kind and happily obliged my questions about the menu and requests for chopsticks, extra napkins, etc, and even bagged up our leftovers for us. Note: pretty sure they use MSG. It doesn't effect me but my bf's throat started swelling up a little and he kept coughing. Just a heads up if that's something that's important to you. Extremely tender chicken with fresh vegetables in the sauce (onions, peppers, mixed into sauce with lightly steamed broccoli on side). Crab Rangoon was good. Flavor of crab mix was great, but shell was a little tough for my liking (I like Rangoon to be crispy, or almost flaky). Flavor was great though. Service was nothing out of the ordinary but very adequate. My drink (only had water) never got much below 1/2 before it was filled again. This place doesn't look like much when you drive by, but the service is prompt and the price is right. I think they have recently updated their menu (I used to come here in the past when I traveled through for work), and I was pleasantly surprised! The new menu has a lot more variety into different types of Asian cuisine, so I tried the Vietnamese chicken noodle soup (pho). It was a great portion and delicious! They sometimes don't have certain menu items/vegetables but there is enough variety to get around it. Well I'm back again, this time I thought I would try the garlic chicken. Bad choice if your looking for chicken in your meal, as it was mostly noodles and sliced onions. As for the garlic very weak.the waiter said I had to pay for the first dish. Then he said he would put it in a bowl for to take and eat later. I told him I'm not eating that ever... do not want it. I have been to Happy Chen by myself and with friends a few times since their grand opening, and I have been exceedingly happy with my experiences here. I've spoken to the workers and the manager and even a little to the head chef himself and I have to say that they are the nicest people ever and I genuinely hope that their business does very well. I came in on opening day and they were packed so I wasn't able to get seated but I spoke to the hostess who explained that the kitchen was backed up because they didn't pre-make any of the food for the free dine-in special they were having because the head chef was insistent on making all of the dishes with love and I just plum thought that was adorable. As for their food, they have an amazing selection of food that includes Sushi and Vietnamese soup. I've ordered the general tso's chicken, house special fried rice, beef and broccoli, happy family, egg rolls, beef on a stick, and crab Rangoon, just to name a few and I have enjoyed every single last ones of these dishes. I ordered a rainbow roll and spicy tuna roll from the highly acclaimed sushi chef which was delicious as well. I generally don't leave reviews but these people are too nice and the food is too good for me to not leave them a good review. I will definitely be coming back! read more
