Complimentary House Soup - really good!
    Wei C.

Here I go again.. driving by, and suddenly bang, my addiction kicks in! Yep my Chinese BBQ hunger pangs kick in and I need my "fix" and I need it now! Closest "fix "at the time was Happy BBQ located in a plaza on Kennedy and 14th Avenue which is one of the newer ones in the area. Food always tastes better when it's cheap and over here at Happy BBQ it's a really good deal with 1, 2 or 3 item rice combos going for $5.00, $5.50 and $6.00 respectively. Portions are really good sized and includes the house soup when is actually quite good. An extra fried tofu is only 60 cents extra so great to add onto your meal. Ordered the BBQ Pork and Roast Pork combo. The meat was flavourful and not too fatty which is the way I like it. It's not the best BBQ I've had but at the price that they have for combos you really can't go wrong. Parking can be brutal in this plaza especially during dim sum hours due to the adjacent Fancy Restaurant. Happy BBQ gave my addiction a Happy Ending!!!

It's basically carbonara pasta with bone marrow you scrape off from the bone. Sauce wasn't very flavourful and a bit too watered down. Still a good second visit.

I found it funny cause almost every item has the "favourite" symbol but everything tastes good! I love the decor inside. Lots of lights, florals and greenery. There is limited seating though since it gets busy - Maybe 10 tables of 4 on the outside perimeter and another 5 tables of 4 on the inside. We got the razor clams, 12 wings and beer special (after 8:30pm), smoked beet and pig ear salad, brisket and ribs and bun bo hue. The 12 wings and beer would have been such a good deal except the drink was pretty watered down. We brought it up to the waitress so hopefully they change that in the future. The wings were crispy,m and delicious. The razor clams tasted good too, but it only comes with 4. The smoked beet and pig eat salad was one of our favourites! Unique, flavourful and good crunchy textured. The brisket and ribs were another favourite. Tender and flavourful. The bun bo hue was good too. Service could have been better. One of the waiters wasn't that friendly. We still had a good time though and enjoyed the food. I would come back to try their other dishes.

Between the two well-known Chinese BBQ spots in First Markham Place, it was tough to choose, but we…read moreended up going with HKS. Both had long lineups around lunchtime, but I liked that this spot offers the option to pair your meats with either noodles or rice. The duck was meaty and plump, with beautifully glistening skin. The roasted pork was perfectly seasoned, featuring that addictively crisp, crackly skin. The BBQ pork was equally impressive, tender and juicy with a glossy, caramelized exterior that balanced sweet and savory flavors really well. None of the meats felt overly fatty or heavy, and when paired with steamed cabbage and your choice of noodles or rice, it made for a really satisfying meal. The vermicelli noodles were thick and chewy, and they come with a side of broth in addition to the soups. The soup itself was light with a pleasant herbal note. The noodle broth, however, had great chicken flavor but was slightly too salty for my taste, so I ended up diluting it a bit to fully enjoy it.

There has been a long debate as to left or right BBQ shop to reign supreme. I find the flavourings of HKS to suite my taste buds more. Not to say Excellent is bad but just not what I was brought up with. To each their own. The combo prices have slowly crept up over the years from the 5.99 two meal combo to the current 9.99 price point I enjoy the BBQ pork and duck as the pork has a nice meat texture with crisp skin along with the duck that is meaty and not too fatty with a nice seasoning to infuse through the meat while roasting. The shop is in a food court and if you are looking for a romantic meal for 2... this may not be your ideal destination. If you are looking for more of a HK hustle and bustle with a side attitude if you take too long to go with your meal, this is the place for you. Do prepared for a long queue to get your meal during the prime weekend times that may be up to 40+ minutes to get your meal
