Super casual, cool type of pace with tables, couches, benches, etc. Not speaking any German, they had a menu in English and the site was was great. Had a cocktail and the Commonground breakfast. Was really good, the music was nice and people watching was fun also. Actually went back the next day with my wife because I liked it so much. Just as good, and consistent, although more crowded and a bit of a wait, but was totally fine.

Nobody in our party left hungry. Reasonably priced as well. Others in my group realized as I pulled up this place to add photos that it was basically a 3 star reviewed spot. None of us believed it should be! The breakfast at our hotel was 17 euro/person and this place, at that same price which included a Bloody Mary/mimosa without meal was SO much better. Don't be fooled by someone else's review. If you are looking for a spot for brunch this is it! As a warning, no laptops on the weekend! Which, is nice for those who want to brunch!

Delicious Southern food and attentive service at a restaurant in Berlin? Well, those are two things…read morethat I thought I'd never find in this city! Tucked away in Prenzlauer Berg, Southern Vittles is an authentic restaurant that checks all of the boxes. I haven't done much soul food exploring stateside, but one of my brunch go-tos is chicken and waffles. And since it's swept the nation from coast to coast, I've had to put up with various quirks, ranging from dry chicken to a stingy amount of overpriced chicken. But this was some of the best chicken and waffles I've ever had. The chicken was so tender that it stole the show, but the sweetness from the maple syrup made it taste even better. (Part of me wishes that the maple syrup hadn't been drizzled onto the chicken in the kitchen and that it would come on the side, but the chef poured the perfect amount, so I can't really complain.) And because I came on a weekend morning, I got to enjoy the bottomless coffee service. It doesn't seem that special because it's from your standard coffee machine, but what really made it stand out was how the owner would walk around with the coffee pot and ask if I wanted a refill. (Alas, it reminds me of how servers in the U.S. constantly come around for water refills...!) And the coffee also tasted better than some of the burnt excuses for coffee that some fancier places in the city sell, so don't look down on a simple cup of joe. Speaking of the owner, he provided the best service that I've ever experienced in a Berlin restaurant. The small talk (imagine that!) made me feel like I was back home in the U.S. The prices (given the exchange rate) made me second guess that feeling a bit, but I can't deny the deliciousness of the meal or the friendliness of the owner.

First, the restaurant is set in a beautiful courtyard, but they also had nice indoor seating as well. Service was very good, they came frequently to check in and refill our waters. The food was amazing and we really enjoyed everything we ate. We started with bread service and a spinach and grape salad that had some nice bits of buckwheat for crunch. Our mains we tried the pork and the beef brisket main dishes which were both served with wonderful sauces to complement the meat. We ordered creamed summer corn and the fries with a aioli verde which were perfect and shared everything. My favorite was the pork, which had some caramelization and porky goodness and lovely pickled veg which paired perfectly with the rich pork. My wife loved the beef brisket which came with some nice fresh celery for contrast. As silly as it sounds the fries were excellent! The creamed corn was just ok, nothing wrong with it, but my least favorite of everything we ordered. For dessert though, the shaved ice milk with toppings was incredible. Innovative, something we've never had and loved being able to add the toppings as we pleased for different tastes. its kind of like a shaved ice, but with ice milk? And it's definitely big enough to share for 2 people. It's a MUST order IMO. We loved it, would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Berlin!

Even my vegetarian friend liked the meal. I highly suggest you come here with a large group so you can sample a little bit of everything. Here were my favorites (it's a long list): * Buffalo burrata, yellow beetroot, chanterelles, and kale pesto * Salmon trout ceviche * Freshly cut French fries with various dips: very simple dish, but we all loved munching on them * "Candy on bone" pork with pickled vegetables (their signature dish) * Beef brisket with fennel, ponzu, and plum * Yellow peas puree with apple chutney * Roasted cauliflower with smoked potatoes * Flank steak tagliata with chimichurri sauce * Gingerbread crème brûlée, pear, and plum sorbet * Honey parfait and pear These dishes were decently good, but probably would refrain from ordering if the above dishes were available: * Pumpkin salad, dill, and Jerusalem artichoke * Potato-onion tart with lovage cream * Mango sorbet * Shaved milk ice cream Not-a-fan dishes that others might like: * Duck tataki, pak choi, and kumquats: overall flavor was good, but there were mounds of duck pate not listed on the ingredients list and I was not a fan of pate * Mushroom tartar, egg yolk, and cauliflower cream: having both egg yolk and cauliflower cream made the dish too wet Service was top-notch. Our table size increased last minute (completely our fault) and the host scrambled to switch our table with another party's, even though the other party already seated a guest! They nicely asked that guest to switch and she agreed. Our waitress was attentive and made good suggestions without upselling. Despite ordering most of the menu, our food came out reasonably quickly. After dining with slow service in Berlin, this place was a breath of fresh air.

We ordered the schnitzel and the bratwurst, which came with cabbage and potato salad, and paired everything with a Berliner Kindl and a Pilsner. The schnitzel was fantastic--crispy, perfectly cooked, and full of flavor--while the bratwurst was equally delicious. The cabbage and potato salad complemented the sausage beautifully, and I found myself piling both onto my schnitzel because they were that good! The true star of the evening, however, was the apple strudel. Freshly made, perfectly sweet, and easily the best apple strudel I had in Berlin. We had a reservation, which I'd recommend since the restaurant filled up quickly during dinner service. The service was fast, friendly, and the staff spoke excellent English, making the experience easy and welcoming for visitors. Since it was a warm evening, we chose the outdoor seating, which made for a lovely dinner, though the indoor dining room has the cozy charm of a traditional German pub. If you're looking for hearty, authentic German food done right, Dicke Wirtin is an absolute must-visit.
