Dr. Bengston is a very capable medical doctor. If you are dealing with Chronic pain he can help you. No doubt. He is not a family doctor and he is not what I would call a holistic healer in any way. Pain is a whole different world. I not expect Dr. Bengston to hold your hand, offer a shoulder to cry on, or be engaging in any way except as a doctor treating your pain. Pain doctors and pain patients are in a world of 'hurt'. Due to the opiate addiction crisis the monster of law enforcement, a.k.a. the DEA, has declared war on all pain doctors and all pain patients. Granted it was some of pain doctors and some of the pain patients who caused the deadly opiate addiction but the DEA is attacking us all. They are taking the 'attack everyone' mode of control no matter your personal story. If you can sign the pain contract, make your appointments on time, stay on the program, then see this doctor. Rude, callous, completely uncaring and ineffective. Honestly, this is the absolute worst "doctor" I have ever had the displeasure to visit. I was referred to him by my daughter's ARC primary care doctor at the time. He literally walked into the room, barely looked at us and when he did there was a look of disdain already on his face. After explaining her chronic pain issues, he looked at me and said, "well...what do you expect ME to do about it?" Seriously, that was his first statement. He didn't examine her, he didn't ask questions about her pain, her diagnosis, the fact that another ARC doc recommended she get help with pain management. Instead, he just dismissed us immediately with the most off-putting and rude statements. Why the hell is this man still in practice and employed by ARC?? Horrible experience with Dr Bengtson and his staff. Absolutely no concept of bedside manner, rude, and prickly all around. Unfortunately, I have the bad luck of having been a patient of these types of doctors for a long time. I've had much better experiences with other offices, but recently had to switch to cheaper insurance and Bengtson is the only one who will take it...so I'm stuck with him. Please find a different office if you have a chance. I looked at the reviews of this office before coming, and was hoping for the best - that the bad reviews were just a few disgruntled folks with a bad experience. However, here I am adding my complaint to theirs. The reviews ARE TRUE!! This place is pretty bad. Come here and expect substandard medical attention. They boast of 24 hour service nurse line. Haha funny joke. Good luck getting a call back and if you do they will tell you to stick it where the sun don't shine. PLEASE if you have a choice go somewhere else. My absolute favorite drs are at Republic Spine and Pain. They are much nicer and they have a private surgery suite on site which is much cheaper for patients. read more

Where do I begin? DEFINITELY should've done some research before making an appointment. I am a BSN trained nurse and I have never seen such a horrific display of patient-centered care in all of my training and practice. Dr. Bengston must have missed the "compassionate" portion of his medical training. He runs his practice with the premise that all of his patients are deceitful, dishonest, drug-seekers. You WILL wait in the waiting room long after your appointment time with the excuse that they are, "running behind." What finally made me hit my breaking point was when my purse was stolen while I was out of town, which contained the medications he prescribed me, and then I broke my ankle that same weekend. After leaving the emergency room, I called Dr. Bengston to see if there was anything he could do to help me since I now had NO way to manage the pain of a broken ankle. He told me that if I didn't go to the police, file reports, etc. AND bring him copies and X-RAYS of my broken ankle to "prove it", then he would terminate me as a patient. Well let me save you the trouble, "Dr." Bengston - I will gladly leave of my own accord. Jerk! What kind of person would ask a person in a cast to hobble around town to gather proof for him? In summation, he gives off the impression that he is burnt out, uncaring, suspicious and judgmental of his patients, and VERY callous. read more

I am telling you righ off, if you are looking for a doctor to say "hi, here's a script, and bye"; this is NOT the doctor for you. Dr. Bengsten is not only top notch in what he is trained to do, he has keen eye for BS. He is very friendly, but he is brass tacks when it comes to treating your pain and evaluating your progress and following or tweaking your treatment plan. BOTTOM LINE: If Dr. Bengsten is your next stop in your stop for doctor shopping for narcotic pain meds, you best try elsewhere! On my first and last visit to see this "doctor" he tells me "if you don't like my treatment plan then you need to go somewhere else." Wow. Zero compassion. Zero patient centered care. This man is by far the worst doctor I've ever been to in my life. If I could give zero stars for my review, I would. Sheesh I should have looked this idiot doctor up before wasting my time and going to him. I usually do but this time I didn't. Lesson learned. About 2 weeks ago after work on a cold rainy day I went to my first appointment with Bengston. Soon as he walked in the room he looked dumbfounded and said "we don't have any records on you so we have to cancel the appointment". I thought are you F-ing serious? I have just gotten off work, I'm tired, and came all the way from South Congress, and I'll be damned if you turn me away due to not having past medical records on me. Every time I have gone to a doctor I have NEVER been told anything like that. Usually doctors come in, greet you, want to know what brought you in, and will then request medical records. I convinced him to sit and talk to me. He finally agreed even though he was hell bent on canceling. First off he knew he needed my medical records BEFORE the visit so why not have your nurse get in contact with me before I come in? Either way I was going to have to come in and sign the release of medical records form so they could get what little records I have. My whole reason for going to pain management is because I have sciatica and back pain. I went to a previous pain management specialist at Scott and White and they pretty much wanted to put me on muscle relaxers and anti depressants for the pain and I did have an MRI because I wanted to get steroid injections instead of that silly concoction. I did take gabapentin but it made me feel super tired and lethargic so I stopped and I have taken NSAIDS but they are hard on my stomach so I stopped that too. Cyclobenzaprine which is a muscle relaxer but of course it did nothing for my nerve pain. Bengston asked me a bunch of questions and then like the other doctor wanted to put me on muscle relaxers and anti depressants saying "oh it works". I was reluctant and I told him straight up I will not take anti depressants. He goes into this whole speech about how it doesn't mean you are depressed and it's for nerve pain blah blah blah. I don't care I know the side effects of anti depressants and the main side effect is it makes you feel suicidal. Well I asked him if I was to take the anti depressant and I felt that way then what. His response to me was "well if you start feeling that way then tell someone you love" and he shrugged his shoulders like he didn't care. That was it and he walked out. I'm sitting there thinking wait a minute YOU are my doctor and YOU want me to take these crappy drugs because YOU claim they work but if they make me feel a certain way you want me to tell someone that's not a doctor instead of telling you so you can actually do something about it? Yes, that makes so much sense lol. Now his nurse came in with a bunch of papers for me to fill out and she was specifically told I needed to sign the medical release form. The form she brought me I was supposed to put down all the previous information from the other facility and doctor I saw. I asked her if they needed his fax number and she said no to just put the facility down and that they would get it. Which I thought was odd. I don't even think they check marked all the correct info on the paper with what they needed. So I was told to follow up in 4 weeks but sooner if they get my records. Well 2 weeks go by and I hear nothing so I call them. That same silly nurse of Bengston which by the way she was more interested in talking and playing with the other staff at my initial visit. She tells me they looked through all my records and that I didn't sign the medical release form and that I had to go online or come in to do it. I thought you are full of shizzle! When I was there I DID fill out the form she gave me that I had to put down the doc's info and they check marked the boxes of info they were requesting. Now maybe she didn't check the correct box with all the info they needed but I'm quite sure I filled out the form since I told her that's what I needed to fill out. After going back and fourth with this idiot she wants to get impatient with answering my questions. I'm like whoa YOU screwed up and if you weren't so busy flapping your gums and joking around with other staff maybe you wouldn't have to answer my questions. YA THINK! So I call back and speak to a supervisor named Tamika I think was her name. I described the paper to her and she said from what I described it sounded like the release of medical records form. She said the nurse or whoever lost the paper. Which makes sense because they did receive office notes from Scott and White but not the results of my MRI. Horrible experience and I will not be back to this incompetent department. I felt like cattle to Bengston and like he wasn't listening or cared about anything I said. They need more pain management docs because Bengston and his nurse suck. Don't waste your time read more

Each time I had an appointment he'd act like he'd never seen me before, didn't bother looking at my chart before walking in the room. Asked "what can I do for you", more like a statement than a caring question. He didn't cate that the meds he put me on aren't working. Want willing to try other needs. Talked down to me. Dr. Bengston should not even have the letters Dr. in front of his name. He is the most rude arrogant doctor I've ever been to. He was late for my appt. 3 times, and when I was finally the one who was late he wanted to cancel my appointment when I was in great pain. HE DIDN'T CARE. I told him why was it okay that he was late 3 times, and then he wants to boot me out when I'm late? He was furious that I even asked and was rude. Then immediately following that I had my out-patient procedure on my back. He was still mad and refused to make eye contact or speak to me in the pre-op visit, while I heard him chat and talk to all his other pre-op patients. He was definitely trying to send a message. He was a nice guy and pretty helpful years ago managing my hip and shoulder pain, but I have had the same issues as others posting here with his lack of interest or caring in managing my pain for the last year or so. After minor back surgery resulted in complications and nerve damage, he was completely disengaged and indifferent with what I was going thru. He gave me an antidepressant for the pain that made things much worse and completely disengaged when I have severe withdrawal symptoms when I stopped taking it. When I next saw him, he complained that I can called his office repeatedly asking for help, and repeatedly said; "So, is there anything else I can do for you today?", in a very disingenuous tone, and without offering an alternative pain medication. So, no Dr. Bengtson, there is nothing you can do for me. read more

I've been with Dr B for a number of years now, and he is one of my favorite doctors. I like him so much that I followed him from one practice to the one that he's at now. I've had to use many different doctors for various things over the years, so I've had the chance to compare bedside manner, honesty, straight-forward-ness, etc. Dr B has been one that I know that I can count on to always be clear and have my best interests in mind. He consistently asks for my input when making decisions, has consistently been creative & willing to try to find a solution that works for me instead of forcing a one size fits all solution, and he has made himself available when needed. I'll give you an example of the last one; I was having an allergic reaction to something & couldn't figure out what so my wife called & Dr B pulled himself away from surgical procedures & gave me time to try to sort the issue out. Dr B is always courteous & polite, he's always been positive & energetic, and he has also shared of himself making the relationship more genuine and less lopsided than I have experienced with other docs. Dr B may not necessarily jump to medications to solve issues as he has a multi pronged approach, but honestly this makes the most sense. Maybe the solution is PT & cortisone, or maybe a RFI treatment, or maybe just PT, or maybe some kind of medicine treatment is necessary too. No matter what, I have found that Dr B is interested in trying different treatments to personalize the solution & find something that works. I hope people aren't in a position to need Dr B's help, but if they are I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him. read more

This Dr has zero bedside manner. He is unwilling to listen to the patient. Treats you like a drug seeker even if your not there to see him for medication. He claims he is a specialist in crps but within 2 min he decided that 6 other drs are all wrong. I went to see him to get nerve blocks but i will not allow this man near me. I left central tx pain completely after this visit since my reg. Pm was in the same office and are the ones who sent me to see him. I've never been treated so terrible by a dr. You will leave his office feeling like a piece of trash. DO NOT SEE THIS DOCTOR!!! read more

All the negative reviews about this egotistical condescending guy are completely true definitely the worst bedside manner I've ever seen I understand I'm not paying my doctor to be my friend but at least listen and look at you when you're talking I was a patient for three years his staff Lesley and Cris are very good but handicapped by the way he does things and he perceives that everyone as a junkie just looking for drugs after I was forced to change insurance companies that he could no longer milk's is when everything changed he took me off the medication that was working perfectly with absolutely no side effects and started playing games with my health he/they made a mistake with the start date of my medication and I received contradicting orders and out of the blue he blacklisted me as a drug seeker I've never done drugs or drink alcohol my entire life he put me on Suboxone over the phone without even consulting me on what the stuff actually is or how to take it when I asked to speak with him before taking the stuff his reply was my decision is final I will not talk to you about it wtf how is that ethical or even legal suboxone is the most horrible drug in the world and is what makes people turn into drug seekers I'm actually considering trying real drugs for the first time in my life to try to get off of this horrible shit he's got me hooked on now that I can't even afford it does nothing but make you sick suicidal and crave drugs I can't believe a doctor that actually was a pain patient once in his life can't understand that your pain level and medication affects how you live your life read more

This is the first of what I hope will be many more Yelp Reviews. I started with this review, as I feel this strongly about Dr. Hans Bengston. I have been a patient of Dr. Bengston's for several years now. I have always had wonderful, positive, caring interactions with him as a patient. Dr. Bengston has recently made a move from one practice to another and is now with Central Texas Pain Centers. It was without any hesitation whatsoever, I followed Dr. B to this new team of doctors. I cannot speak highly enough for every one of the office staff that I have had the pleasure to interact with. They have always been pleasant, caring, and truly involved with the individual as a patient. Dr. Bengston made a wonderful WIN WIN move when he joined Central Texas Pain Centers. If any of his previous patients are on the fence about whether to follow him to this new group, I highly encourage you to make an appointment at any one of their three locations and to go see Dr. Bengston. He is by far one of few doctors I see whom I have such high esteem. Dr. Bengston is one of a kind and I am so appreciative of everything he has done for me. I have been a patient here for over a year. I saw Dr. Bengston a few times but switched to his PA after he sat down, yawned, and talked all about how tired HE was. His PA was ok for a while but frankly I have had enough of poor scheduling, feeling there is little interest in my improvement and her moody manner. This isn't what care is about. read more
