Can't say enough about Hans Auto Repair. I was driving home to Pasadena after dropping off my daughter at college in Santa Cruz and my car just died. I was referred to 2 different repair shops by the tow truck company. I liked Tracey over the phone and she said they could look at my car right away. It turned out to be my alternator. They had my car finished the next day. It was a big job, but they rushed it for me because they knew I needed to get back home. Hans provided awesome service. I called from the DMV five minutes away, as I needed to get a smog test before registering my vehicle. They were able to get me in within five minutes. The smog test was performed within an hour and I was good to go. Tracy was very nice and accommodating, I appreciated that they were able to fit me in on such short notice! read more

Hans' Auto took care of me and my car. In this case the 2000 Volvo V70 with almost 285,000 miles on it was running perfect except for a solenoid in the transmission which is no longer made. Mike was able to find one and installed it no problem once in hand. They took it in near Thanksgiving, and days after it was ready, pretty much as soon as they got the part. I was nervous because I couldn't get the car smog without that transmission solenoid, I would've had to junk it without Mike's intervention. Thanks to them I'm back in service. read more

I had a great experience at Hans. My old Volvo took a giant crap on me and the dealer wanted like $3400 to fix the piece of crap. Fortunately, a good friend of mine recommended Hans and I came here for a second opinion. They got me running for about $800 and it turns the dealer had misdiagnosed my problem anyhow! My mom took her Ford Fusion here last week.. after getting it back from a service car was shaking terribly. Today she had someone else look at it and NO trans fluid. They charged her $800 for a service which is insane. And then she called and asked if they checked the transmission fluid and they said yes they check all fluids. It was bone dry with thick black gunk at the bottom. So when she confronted him about it he said "it must have a transmission leak" unreal. Maybe because she is a woman they don't take it seriously but check your fluids after you leave this place. She got it confirmed elsewhere because the car ran worse after leaving this shop. And has receipts to prove it. They did change oil and filters. But that's basic and no where worth $800. read more

After going to the same mechanic for 30 years and moving to a new area we found this place on YELP. Very pleased with their service thus far and particularly with our most recent visit which was to go get our 2001 Volvo smogged. Check engine light on and diagnosed as a leaky fuel hose allowing excess vapors, so straight forward fix. Ordered the part and job completed in a day. Now what really impressed me was apparently thinking to do a nice thing the mechanic noticed our wind shield wiper was on upside down so in attempting to remedy that the wiper arm unfortunately snapped back and cracked the windshield. I was told right away and offered a new windshield replaced for free! All work completed and labor for smog and diagnosed check engine issue were reasonably priced. We will certainly be returning with our list of maintenance issues with the car very soon. One Happy Customer who appreciates no surprises, but when they do happen owning up to them is a definite plus!!! Bravo Hans read more

Hans is my go-to place for Volvo service. Mike Brooks & Tracy Polockow, the owners, took the place over from the original Hans and have really run with it, becoming Green Certified and adding Volvo sales to the mix. Service is always courteous and prompt, and they let you know about potential/developing issues without pushing new parts aggressively. They also have a good magazine selection and wifi in the waiting area. Bonus points for being across the street from the excellent Sweet Elena's bakery and cafe! read more

I offer three honest thoughts about Hans Auto for anyone who takes a moment to listen to me - 1. Confidence: I have patronized the business of Mike and Tracy for nearly 10 years. I unfailingly bring my international students to him before I bring them anywhere else to look for an affordable, reliable vehicle. Over time, at least five of the students have purchased used vehicles from him, and each has happily made numerous 1000 mile trips. His mechanical expertise and intuition are profound. Simply put, I have complete confidence in his competence. 2. Integrity: I propose that you view the comments above as a personal testament to Mike and Tracy - I place my complete and unwavering trust in their integrity. When he has said that each of those cars was safe and road-worthy to drive to the Grand Canyon and back, I entrusted my students' lives to his work. They have all taken such long trips, never a flaw, never a problem. 3. Skewed feedback: I'll admit that I don't understand how this site's software determines which reviews are/aren't "recommended" (and hard to find). Like me, you probably weigh a business's review rating very heavily. I have read all 38 reviews (for whatever reasons, 29 were rejected). Fully 34 of 38 reviewers gave them 5-stars. That equals 4.7/5, and in my experience, THAT 4.7 properly reflects what these two honest and hard-working citizens merit. That's it. Mike Brooks is, in a word, "stellar." I have been going to Mike for more than 7 years. During that time, I have owned 3 Volvos, and my ex-wife has owned two. He has taken extremely good care of all of these cars. I trust him implicitly. If he says something needs to be fixed, or this can wait, well. . . I am still waiting for him to be proved wrong. He always fixes things right, the first time. You never have to bring your car back because he didn't fix your problem when you first brought it to him. And with 5 Volvos, in 7 years, you can only guess at how many times we've needed service. Mike is an excellent mechanic. He is trustworthy. He saves all the parts he changes for you to look at. He takes the time to explain everything he does to your car carefully, so that you can understand it. (Read: he doesn't talk to you in mechanic-ease). He will go out of his way to accommodate you. You can drop in on him and ask him why your engine light is on, or can he check your wiper blades. Anything more time-intensive, and you are better off making an appointment. There is a lot of money on this Peninsula. And it is a shame that on this Peninsula, there are so many untrustworthy mechanics. Some of these guys will take it to the bank and then some, and not even bat an eye. They will take you for everything you've got. Not Mike. I recommend Hans Auto Service to everyone. I give him only my highest recommendation. If he can't do the repair (like put headers on your car), he will send you to someone that can, that he trusts. I recently found out that Mike works on all cars, not just Volvos. Since this discovery, I have been bringing my 1979 Corvette to him for repairs. Once again, Mike Brooks has proven himself to be an excellent mechanic. On Volvos, and any other cars you might own. Go to him. No better Volvo care on the peninsula! I have been using Hans (Mike and Tracy) to service our various Volvo's since late 2006 and couldn't be happier. Having taken my cars to both the dealership and other private mechanics, I know Mike's technical skill and attention to detail are unrivaled. In a few cases he found problems others overlooked. Had they not been caught when they were, the cost of repair would have been exponentially more. Both Tracy and Mike make the sometimes daunting experience of having you car worked on a pleasurable experience. I have recommended them to all my Volvo driving friends, and all have later thanked me. This place is awesome! I've always worried about checking out new places, due to bad experiences in the past- but I'm so glad we tried these guys (and gal)! They are HONEST, don't "sell sell sell" you repairs, are fast, and reasonably priced. I can't say enough good things about this place! We've come here several times, and have never had an issue with any repair that they have done on our 2004 XC70. Phenomenal! I strongly recommend taking your car here. Prices are totally reasonable, but even better Tracy and Mike are incredibly honest. I had been told by another repair company that I would need both front and rear brake pads and rotors. Being told it would be a couple of thousand $s. I expected to be told the same by Hans Auto Repair, but no, I only had to have the rear brake pads replaced. At 1/2 the price of the other place to do the same work, and than I wasn't charge for a minor interior fix and for taking me out and helping me with shifting. The drive home was so smooth! Do not consider this place, EVER.. I picked up my car after a week and a half with more problems than it went in with. Mike has a huge attitude (one other reviewer picked this up accurately) and when I questioned him, he got hostile, and I mean meth hostile. They do not know what they are doing (I had to show Mike which ball joint needed replacing), and have the nerve to confront you with questions like these when you pick up your car. "So, how long have you had the squeak in the left front brakes?" "Uh, what squeak." "Oh yea, it's been a problem since you came in" "Oh really? Never heard it before". Next, this: "Um, we parked you on the street and you are blocked in by our vehicles. Let me move them." Then, when you get home, you notice the reason why you were blocked in . Because someone crushed your tail light! You bring the car back for Mike to look at, he barrels at you with a flashlight and comes up with some cockamamie story" "Oh no, see that bug in the tail light? It's dead. If we crushed the tail light , it wouldn't be dead." Then when you ask for the name of his insurance company you get a "Goodbye!" as he takes off. Tracey seemed nice enough and I feel for her, married to this unstable nightmare. Thousands of dollars later, my car needs more repair than it needed before, and I have some kind of PTSD residue from dealing with this Mike. There is the added advantage of listening to Mike swear at cars using the c, b, mf and other mysogynist words. The positive reviews below must be from friends or family. I am a real pain the butt sometimes. I do much of my own work and am not happy when I get a canned story, bag of lies, misleading guesses, and people who don't stand behind their work. I have never gotten anything but fast, professional service from Mike and Tracy. Mike explains things truthfully and clearly because he knows what is doing. He offers helpful options and treats me with respect. I switched shops only when another local indy Volvo shop was not able to repair a simple A/C issue, and made a big oversight in an alignment job then got defensive about it instead of fixing it. Mike found the root problem with the other shop's repair and has kept the complicated repairs of my Volvo well managed and affordable ever since. He has even stayed late after work just for me when I limped in unannounced with a mysterious ignition misfire. Mysterious to me, not to him. 206,000 miles and still the best car I have ever owned.
