Auburn's Town Tavern - Town Tavern Tenderloin looks amazing but tastes like disappointment with a side of sadness.

First timer that lives abt 20miles away. Very inviting & friendly vibe. I was excited to try the…read moreTown Tavern Tenderloin, all the pics look really good. I ordered one dressed with lettuce & tomato with a side of fries & Cole slaw. Word of warning. Don't. Do not order this. The loin was pounded thin and beautifully fried. HOWEVER....ZERO taste. Zero seasoning. Zero. Not even salt. The breading was moist underneath and a little "doughy"- and sat like an old wet sock in my stomach. There was absolutely nothing to save this poor BAT other than copious amounts of ketchup for flavor. How in the hell are you gonna go to the effort of pounding out a beautiful tenderloin paper thin in spots and NOT even attempt to season your breading? No salt. No pepper. No Cavenders. No Adobe. No Lawreys. How does this happen? The world may never know. The lettuce topper was 1/2 Romaine leaf and 1/2 iceberg & wilted. The tomato slices (2) should have been thrown out yesterday. Pinkish & slimy - side of botulism please. The menu lists the "tiny little bun" as being "grilled". That bun never came close to the damned grill. It was a plain white hamburger bun as fresh as can be. A second plate should be brought so customers don't have to cut/rip the tenderloin on a napkin on the table. How can a waitress knowingly ask how "things are tasting" and not see you hacking this shoe leather bland swine piled on a napkin? Never mind. I was already turned off from the first taste while cutting it up & knew 80% of it was staying there for the trash can. No way any of that was coming home. My husband ordered a Ruben with fries & Cole slaw. First thing out of his mouth was "fries are horrible". Yikes! How can you f$&k up fries? Cheap fries in old oil without salt & they sat NOT under lamps....they were cold - only explanation. His Ruben came without any thousand island dressing & he was already pissed abt the fries. Smallest Rueben I've ever seen for $10.95 - fries and Cole slaw were extra. So for $10,95 that meat better be piled on the marbled rye! The CocaCola mix was perfect as was their unsweetened tea. We sat quietly waiting for our bill & upon arriving it was someone else's & needed to be re-rung. 15min later we're still waiting for it. We were one of 3, 4 tops so the place wasn't packed at all. Note to self - go to Mad Anthony's for tenderloin and Rueben and you won't be served disappointment with a side of sadness. I wanted to really like this place. It failed miserably.

There are lots of interesting interior designs that make you feel at home. The staff here was very friendly and helpful. They did a good job explaining the menu to a first timer. When you enter you grab a menu from a stand - it is well signed but impersonal. There is signage that directs you to order at the bar. More impersonal impressions. The food menu has a decent variety to choose from. The beer menu is rather large. The non beer alcoholic selections were very thin. On this occasion they were out of two of the three sangria selections. The food was disappointing. The chips and cheese appetizer is large with lots of chips. The salsa is sweet and tasty. We thought it tasted a lot like Picante brand. The cheese was thin and dry and just kind of there. The chips were sprinkled with a dry rub which added some needed flavor and salty pop. Overall...I wouldn't recommend. The peach sangria wine was very good. A delicious sweet taste. Very refreshing. Great for a warm summer evening - definitely recommend! My wife had the Ole Ford Pita and really liked it. The pickles that come with this dish were very tasty. They had a nice crisp texture and vinegar bite. They do have a bit of a spicy kick so beware! The chicken quesadillas was just there. The salsa was the same as what came with the chips & cheese. A nice sweet and cool taste. Mildly spicy. The quesadilla was kinda small for $10. There were a small amount of chicken chunks which were moist and tender - but no discernible seasoning. The Cole slaw side was nice. Large pieces of cabbage with a mild mayo taste. This has a nice cool and refreshing taste on a hot evening. The baked beans were okay. They tasted a lot like Walmart baked beans out of a can - which I like. Just nothing special here.

What gearhead wouldn't love a car/shop themed brewery?... Hop Rod DIPA didn't dissapoint - nice hop-forward character with a slight dank nose that is very pleasing. Also tasted Grease Monkey and took home a growler of both. Service and atmosphere are off-the-charts in the Automotive birthplace of Indiana. VERY much worth a stop (or many) and assuming your a gearhead save time to explore NATMUS, ACD, and the other places that make Auburn so special...

Mimi's Retreat (Auburn, on the square) - dinning "retreat" during the Auburn Fair…read more Here is another one of our family traditions. We enjoy going to the Auburn Free Fall Fair. Looking at the 4-H animals, walking through the commercial tent, getting donuts, people watching and taking in the food vendor sights/smells are part of that experience. We also like to grab a bite to eat while there. However, I'm just not interested in fighting the lines to get an expensive corn dog, sirloin tip and/or fish sandwich....and then having no where to sit, relax and eat our selections. Enter Mimi's Retreat! Mimi's Retreat is small community bar that is located on the south side of the square - so they are right in the middle of the action! They are always open during the fair and tend to have fewer customers than normal. This makes them a great choice to duck into to get a good meal, at a pretty good price and sit & relax away from the crowds. Mimi's has been a part of the Auburn scene for as long as I can remember. They are best described as a community bar. They have some TV's for sports viewing. The attractive looking bar will seat about 10 people. There are less than modern tables to seat about another 40 patrons. Mimi's is set in an old building. They have stayed true to the older feel in terms of wood work, brick and vintage feel. The decor mainly features bar modern day product signs and some historic Auburn pictures. The kitchen is easily viewed as you walk in the door. The place is rather comfortable and inviting. The staff here is welcoming and friendly. Mimi's service may not be the most attentive when the bar is busy - just be aware. The menu is pretty simple and moderately priced. They have the typical bar food with a few add-ons that give them a little boarder touch including non-bar food daily specials. I can't speak for bar service. It seems like they hustle the best they can. Food tends to come out at a decent pace - depending on the crowd. Mimi's is definitely a no-frills kind of place as the non-alcohol drinks are served in a Toby Keith style red Solo cup. Now onto the food. We started with the sweet potato fries. The fries are thin and fried to a moderate crisp - like you would expect, not mushy. The fry has a nice bold sweet potato taste. They aren't very oily. The real treat is the homemade Hawaiian pineapple dipping sauce. It is smooth, thick and sweet. You literally can taste the refreshing Hawaiian flavors which really bring out the bolder sweet potato taste. Definitely a must try! The blacken chicken Caesar wrap is very tasty. The chicken is very moist and nicely grilled. The mild tasting Caesar dressing is applied in moderation and helps pull all the flavors together. Note: this $8 item doesn't come with a side, that is extra. The Cole slaw is homemade and outstanding. It includes white and purple cabbage. Onions, carrots and red peppers are apart of this fresh tasting side. The Cole slaw is mayo based. However, the mayo is very lightly applied and it has a hint of vinegar flavoring - the best of both style Cole slaws. The fish dinner has seven medium pieces for $14.99. It comes with French fries and one side. The French fries were a lot like the sweet potato fries in terms of cut, firmness and oiliness - fairly good. The fish pieces tasted fresh-ish. No fishy or frozen tastes. The meat was soft, tender and slightly flaky. The breading is rather thin. It is also rather plain to taste - unlike a Fish of Stroh type fillet. The tarter sauce has a heavier mayo taste with a mild amount of pickle/tartar flavoring. It definitely isn't sweet or heavier on relish like I like it. Overall...Mimi's makes a good place to pick up a meal regardless of the time of year. Give them a try sometime when you are in Auburn.

Our server was friendly and took our orders promptly. My husband had the grilled chicken sandwich, I ordered the breaded tenderloin, and we shared fries. The sandwiches were good, but the fries were a bit disappointing--very small portion for nearly $5 extra. They were thin, McDonald's-style fries. The bar wasn't busy during our visit, with only a couple tables occupied at a time. Staff seemed to know most guests personally, greeting them with hugs. The music was loud, which may be fun for some, but felt a little overwhelming to us. The biggest issue was the restrooms, which had a very strong odor that made the experience unpleasant. Overall, the food itself was decent, but the portion sizes, loud atmosphere, and restroom cleanliness kept it from being a great visit.
