I just wish I lived closer! The ladies in this shop are incredibly welcoming and super helpful! My friend brought in a hank of yarn that she accidentally made into a knotted mess and one of the ladies generously offered to help fix it. We browsed the shop (and bought a bunch of beautiful yarn - there were some good prices, especially in their clearance section) as she worked on the mess. They let us just sit and chat with them as we waited for the yarn mess to be fixed. They told us they're a bunch of friends who opened the shop together and love to hang out, knit, and chat. Upon entering I was greeted by not one, not two but multiple women, who were sitting at a communal table working on yarn projects. Open to anyone who would like to join in on the fun. What a cute store. It is located on right next to Paws pet store. There's plenty of parking and it's covered, which I appreciate in the heat. Everything is neat and organized, with actual items made with the yarn on display. I think that is an excellent touch, so you can see how it looks as a finished item. Yarn is the star, with colors and variety aplenty (they even had alpaca!). Everyone is very helpful; it is woman owned, and an owner is there every day. They also offer classes and free help if you get stuck on your project. I picked up some crochet hooks, a metal comfort grip and a beautiful hand carved wood one, and a skein of cotton/ hemp blend. I cannot say enough nice things about this store and the owners! The kindest, helpful and most patient woman named Brigid helped my husband and I today. We've never knitted or crocheted before and she explained everything to us and showed us around and even helped us pick out the things we need to get started. We took macrame with Hilary! It was amazing! So fun! In 2.5 hours we were able to learn and practice/master 4 knots. We also started a plant hanger, which I finished at home with an additional 2 hours. Everything was provided. Handouts for the knots. Diagram for the project. Yarn, beads, and pots for the plant hanger. There was another class at the same time. It looked like weaving or loom. Idk but it looked fun too! I haven't had a chance to go back since the pandemic started but I really love this place and hope anyone looking for yarn (whether online or in person) will give them a shot. They have so many beautiful hand dyed yarns, I was inspired to write this review after realizing how much of my stash for ravelry is from here! The ladies are so helpful, they have a wide variety of yarns and they put a lot of care into the design of the shop. I don't know if it's still happening but there was also a local pickle maker selling their wares there in the back, but you need cash for it. I love pickles and the ones I've tried have all been delicious. :-) By the way if you've ever walked into a yarn shop and felt intimidated or unwelcome due to a clique-y atmosphere, that is not the case here. The patrons are often just as welcoming as the staff (when it's open for knit night). I believe they're doing zoom knitting now but I haven't had a chance to try it out. read more

They are so supportive here. My grandma taught me how to knit decades ago and I was trying to use YouTube to remember some things to knit a blanket. I went to Hands on Knitting Center to get my yarn. They made recommendations and I got a beautiful color. Once I started the blanket I ran into MANY problems & went to the Hands on Knitting Center for help. Some weeks I was there every day asking them to fix errors. They were patient and helpful and kept me going on my blanket. I decided to wander in here after bending my cheap Hobby Lobby needles and was pleasantly surprised! They have a decent selection of yarns , and being a new knitter, I was shocked at how luxurious knitting can get! The staff was super friendly and welcoming, and as we were shopping a few people came in to knit as a group. It's nice to see community during these times! I was looking for a new project to work on on the plane home to Chicago and found HOKC. Let me tell you. my family and I (2 adults, three small children) came in like a hurricane! the ladies at the store were delightful. They were very patient with me and helped me pick colors. They were kind to my children. I finally figured out what to get and paid. I needed to get lunch for my children so they offered to have it waiting for me when we were done. True to their word, it was all wound and ready to go upon our return. They even noticed my kids asking for pins to put on their shirts, so they made three goody bags for them! I visited the store once, about two years ago, when I was just passing through on my way to somewhere else. Loved it! Super-nice professional staff, and they stock one of the best selections of all-around great products of any of the stores in SoCal. If I hadn't moved to the East Coast, I'd definitely have made HOK a regular destination. Under the circumstances, I'm unlikely to visit again, but I was fortunately smart enough to sign up for their awesome emails, which are frequent (but not too frequent), friendly, newsy, and full of good suggestions for everything from yarns to on-line classes to KALs. There's a real community at that store, and you feel it even if you can't be there in person. I'm a regular customer, even at this distance. i have many "favorite" yarn stores in the LA area and in my new home town, but I feel like my relationship to HOK is real, solid, dependable. in fact, Yeah, they're amazing. read more

So, I've been wanting to take a crochet class for awhile. I finally looked one up and found this one, was super excited! I got there and from the beginning I could tell this wasn't a true "beginners" class... everyone there had some sort of knitting or crochet background. I could tell the instructor was frustrated with my lack of knowledge and didn't really want to share her time with my questions or with me needing help. I get it, it's a group class and you have a timeline. Also, I'm left handed... I wasn't made aware that she taught only right handed people so I basically sat the whole class not being able to follow along because of the instructor's lack of knowledge in teaching crochet to left handers. I asked if anyone knew how and she said no. So at the end, she offered a "refund" but it was only a store credit? Which made no sense to me because why would I go back if they can't teach me. I left feeling so dumb for asking questions and wanting to be taught by the instructor. Super disappointed. And for the future would suggest saying something on their website about only teaching right handed crocheting. read more

This place really is more of a knitting center than a knitting store. Once you come in, you immediately notice the big table in the middle and then the surrounding walls of yarn. The yarn is organized by weight. There is a wall for needles and other notions. There is another room for spinning, in which they seem to have either classes or get-togethers often. Staff is super friendly and helpful. Always willing to help. What I truly like about this place is that every day there is a knitting "group": I put it in quotes because whoever shows up that day constitutes a group. I haven't been to the "official" Wednesday evening group. But if they tell me that the 20+ group on Saturdays is nothing compared to Wednesday's group, then that just shows how popular they are. Unlike some LYS I've been to, there is no requirement to buy the yarn there first before knitting with them. There is the occasional informal knitting class in which you can buy a kit of yarn and materials and learn the lesson. I was in there the day they had a lesson on making a multi-color coffee cup cozy, which also tripled as a lesson on knitting in the round and trapping floats. I think you have to sign up with them to know when these classes will be available. One additional feature I learned when I was there: At the time, they had a person on site who can finish your knitting for you (for a fee). I thought that was weird, but then I found it ingenious: There are people who hate finishing, and if they have the means to have someone else do it (for pending gifts, etc.), that frees up the buyer to buy even more yarn from the store to start more projects. It's the one -stop-place-to-shop, to sit n' knit, to share my accomplishments and to get help when "somthin' 'ain't right" with my project. I was waiting to get in several visits to the shop before writing a review. Unfortunately those six visits all earned just one star. I wish I had even one positive thing to say about this shop but I don't. Here are the things that made each visit a one star... 1. I was never greeted. Never. I tried to be nice and always buy one skein of yarn just to try to keep the faith that the next visit would be better. The only time I was spoken to was when checking out. 2. There was always a big knitting group there. Normally that would be a wonderful thing but the group sits around a big table and takes up most of the space in front of the yarn. That means you cannot easily look at the pitiful shelves of yarn without having to ask one of them to move their chair. Everyone really makes you feel like you are invading their precious knitting group by trying to shop and the ones I accidentally bumped into were very rude. There is a classroom space there... THAT is what should be used for group and get everyone out of the way for shoppers. I guess they only care about selling yarn to the yarn group. 3. Extremely poor yarn selection. I'm not actually sure how this shop stays in business. I guess the large grumpy knitting group likes to shop there. I suppose if you just want one skein of Cascade 220 superwash for a hat you are in luck but there is nothing there that isn't in any other low end yarn shop. If you did want to knit something out of the mediocre yarn they certainly wouldn't have it in a large enough quantity to accommodate a large project. The shelves always looked half empty. Certainly not a shop you'd be happy to walk in to. The final straw was my visit yesterday. I couldn't look at most of the yarn because of grumpy knitters who would not budge, the place was silent. How can that many people just sit there and not talk? Again, that feeling of having interrupted their group with wanting to attempt to support an LYS. At check out I had to stand there for several minutes waiting for the woman to finally put down her project and come help me. After paying she said absolutely nothing to me. Not a thank you for coming in, thank you for shopping there... nothing. All of the good reviews on here are absolutely shocking to me. I gave this place a shot six times and they were all absolutely awful. I won't ever be going back and I will advise anyone looking for yarn shops in the area to do themselves a big favor and skip it. read more

I've been going to Hands On Knitting Center since they opened. The owners are very knowledgeable and are so willing to help you with whatever knitting problem that you may have. They're incredibly nice, and will really go out of their way to see that you have a good shopping experience. They will even give you free individual knitting lessons! Most places charge for a service like that. I have been a customer for 3 years since they opened. This place is so wonderful. They owners will help you with any pattern or yarn- even if you bought them somewhere else. The customers are friendly and a supportive group no matter what your skill level. The owners teach and help for FREE! Where do you get free help anymore? I am a better knitter and spinner because of this shop and the PEOPLE who go there. I don't know when Megan from arrowhead came by 6 times, but I have been in the shop when new people come and they are ALWAYS greeted, introduced, and helped. Try them out. I've been knitting at Hands On Knitting since their opening, and before at Sharon Mooney's previous shop. Sharon is an excellent designer and knitting teacher with, well, decades of experience and patience to match, despite her youthful appearance. This store has now expanded to include a classroom, where cheerful Pat Cloud teaches crochet, top exec turned designer Molly will teach her felted bag patterns, and silent but sharp witted Sue will share her excellent finishing skills (who doesn't need that?!). In addition, the group knitting sessions on Wednesday night and Saturday have bonded women of all ages and backgrounds in this community.
