I've now been here twice, once with a party of four and once with party of 20. The first time, we made a reservation for four on a Friday night. After talking it over with the server, we agreed that we would do a sampler of dishes. They confirmed that we had no allergies and proceeded to bring out the greatest selection of dishes. It was truly one of the best meals I've ever had. The dishes were a combination of sushi and meat. The branzino was a highlight that came toward the end. All of the food paired with a white wine made for a wonderful experience. The second time I came, we made a reservation for a large group on a Sunday night. We did the tasting menu again and the food was still excellent, except we got different things than the first time so it was not quite as good. We started with sea salted edamame and still had a nice selection of meat and sushi, including shrimp tempura. Hanami also has fun cocktails and I love trying all of the different options. I highly recommend Hanami for fresh and delicious Japanese food in Oslo. read more

Such a great spot for dinner. The food was amazing. We got the chili garlic edamame, which was really good, and the crispy artichokes which stole the show. Sushi selection was amazing with vegetarian and vegan options. Service was great and staff was friendly. The view from the patio was incredible and the bathrooms were AMAZING. My wife and I have a favorite sushi restaurant in Denver. We have tried sushi all around the United States, Japan, Hawaii, and Europe and we almost always end up saying "it's not as good as Sushi Den." However, we really liked Hanami. We were asked if we had a reservation at 1 PM and were promptly seated. We asked if we could move to the sushi bar and yes that was also OK. We had a very friendly English-speaking server/hostess who looked after us. We tried about four different items for our lunch. Everything was great. The toro sashimi was especially good. The shake sushi was perfect. We liked the beef tataki, but thought jam on top of the beef was a bit too creative. The tempura roll was enjoyed by both of us. We had some green tea with rice. The price was expensive at 1100 NOK for lunch, but we had a good time and thought the high-quality and decent service made the price acceptable despite being perhaps 30% more than we would have paid back at our favorite sushi spot in Denver, CO. I was expecting a lot from Hanami. The best part is that it's one of the few restaurants in Oslo that are open til late. Usually the last order is at 10 pm and sometimes one gets out late and there's no options. We reached around 1030 pm on a Thursday night so it was slow. The server was very attentive and sweet. We ordered a lot of food and while most was good, the sushi was disappointing. The black cod was the best thing on the menu. The wagyu sliders were also nice. We shared a dessert, it was a decadent chocolate mousse. Delicious. The prices were very high but now in Oslo there's good fusion food available at reasonable prices too so it seemed a bit much. read more

Absolutely fabulous!!!! We had tasting menu of many dishes.... Expensive cuts of fish and did not regret at all. It was the first time I ate halibut tummy and wagyu beef. They were exquisite. Their fatty tuna was exceptional.. Best I ever tasted. They have a very long selection of wine. We saw three bottles that are more than 10,000 kr per bottle. The restaurant definitely serves very good food but prices are steep too. Definitely a special occasion type of place, otherwise my wallet will weep. read more

Hanami is a trendy Japanese fusion restaurant that is currently all the rage in Oslo. They're ideally located with both patio and indoor seating. My problem with this restaurant, however, is their elitist attitude towards their customers. My husband and I are currently on our honeymoon and as we sat outside the restaurant in the pouring rain next to the sign that said "Please wait to be seated", we finally decided to open the door to the restaurant after no one came to meet us. We asked the two workers if they were open thinking maybe they closed in between lunch and dinner like most sushi restaurants in the States. They proceeded to ask if we had a reservation. We said we didn't but asked if we needed a reservation because nearly all of their tables were available-- they had one occupied table outside in the patio seating and 2 occupies tables inside. She continued to say she can make a reservation for us at 6:00PM (we arrived at 3:00 PM and wanted to eat a late lunch). We we told her walked a couple miles from our hotel so 6:00 PM wouldn't work for us, she said she could push it back later to 6:30. After we told her that wouldn't work and told her thanks anyways, she condescendingly said "ok bye bye", quickly turned around, and continued working. I can understand if the restaurant was full and they didn't have tables but the restaurant was nearly EMPTY. Her excitement that our times didn't work with her despite there being plenty of empty tables at the moment made it seem like she never wanted to seat us in the first place. Even if this place is all the rave, I don't support businesses that have a bias towards who they want into their restaurants. There's so many trendy places to eat, I would definitely say to save your money for a business that has better business ethics. read more

Perfectly located on the corner of the pier of Tjuvjolmen and with a modern, intim and cozy athmosphere. On arrival you're immideately met by the staff, which perfectly well watches after you during the stay, making sure your glass is never empty, still leaves you in peace; not being fussy. The menue is tempting offering both fish, meat and sushi of choices. Don't get me wrong - the food at Hanami isn't bad. It's just not as good as the food served at so many other Oslo restaurants in this price segment. Also, the service is boringly impersonal and suffers from timing issues. I ate here on a Sunday night, and as the menu seemed immensely promising, and we were unable to make up our minds, we asked the waiter to combine a tasting menu for us. It might of course be that we were unfortunate with the selection of dishes, but when I ask the waiter to select the menu for me, I expect (perhaps foolishly) to be served at least some of the best dishes served at the restaurant in question. We were first served yellowtail and salmon sashimi. The salmon was good, but the yellowtail was too "fishy"-tasting to me (I haven't got the experience with this fish to tell whether this was because it wasn't fresh enough or just because yellowtail tastes like that). The second course was two types of maki - fried tuna maki with salsa and spicy scallop maki. As Hanami has been raved about as one of the best sushi places in town, I was disappointed to find it quite unbalanced in taste - both with the salmon sashimi and the maki, all I could taste were the sauces, which defeats the purpose of sushi for me. The next courses of robata grilled scallops and pork belly were the best part of the meal - the pork belly was extremely tender and not as fatty as other pork belly dishes I have had. As the last savoury course, we were served grilled sirloin steak with a salad with coconut dressing. This was good, but not inspirational in any way. We ordered two desserts to share - the yuzu sorbet with verbena pesto, and the passion fruit yoghurt with liquorice foam. These simply did not live up to their fancy menu descriptions, and the flavours were neither as pronounced as I would have liked, nor balanced enough. I also found both dishes to be overly sweet. The verbena pesto hardly tasted of verbena at all, and the liquorice foam had a vague liquorice root-taste that was only discernible in the aftertaste, and which collided slightly with the sourness of the passion fruit. There was also a thoroughly uninteresting sponge cake-ish component underneath the liquorice foam and passion fruit yoghurt, and a dry meringue with the yuzu sorbet, neither of which did anything to help the dishes. With the food, I had one glass of Chablis and another of Sancerre. Without going into details, none were particularly good, and I would have expected more at this price level. In total, I was thoroughly underwhelmed by both the food and service at Hanami. The food lacked balance and finesse in general, which surprised me. There are many other asian fusion restaurants in Oslo in this price segment, and you would really be better off going somewhere else, such as Nodee. read more

My husband and I read about Hanami in multiple travel articles and blogs and since our hotel was right next to it we thought we should try it out. Food: We ordered the prawn tempura and the yakitori robata for appetizers. For our entrees we ordered three makis - fried spicy tuna, unagi and the soft shell crab. Everything we ordered was delicious. Drinks: We ordered two glasses of champagne and one glass of white wine. Price: For two people we paid 1,229.00 NOK. Ambiance: The weather was perfect and we sat outside on the water which is always a treat. It was a Sunday night and the outdoors was buzzing. Service: Everyone from the servers to the food runners were very nice. Would I go back? Yes. The food, location and service was all great. The only thing that would hold me back is the price. My favorite restaurant in Norway! The place has a great location, at the tip of the wharf at Tjuvholmen. In the summer you can sit outside and enjoy the view of the water. Hanami is a new and interesting addition to Oslo's restaurant scene. Let me start by saying that the food is excellent, and the service is also very good if a little over-eager at times (and why do waiters consistently recommend the most expensive item on the meny?? Very annoying!!). The atmosphere is very nice, and the location excellent. However; portions are TINY. The two of us ordered 6 dishes to share and one beer each, and left still feeling hungry (!). I would compare Hanami's portions to those little mouthfuls of food you get in other fine dining establishments between the dishes you actually ordered. When, on top of that, the prices are at the very top end of the scale, this is very disappointing. We had to spend another 200 kroner (40 USD, 20 GBP) at McDonalds AFTER having spent 1200 kroner (250 USD, 120 GBP) at Hanami just to satisfy our hunger before going home. If you're not the kind of person that never has to look at pricetags, then Hanami is not the place for you. This is unfortunate because Hanami provides an interesting journey into Japanese cuisine beyond sushi, noodles and green tea. If you don't like sushi this is the right place for you. Maki's with mayonnaise and pretentious presentation. All we're missing is the mango or the strawberries to make it the Brazilian sushi crap that has invaded the market. If you've ever been to japan you'll know what I mean. I didn't try the grilled meat so I have no idea how good it is. At the bar, the fruit juices are very good. I recommend the watermelon juice. read more

Softshell crab roll was the best of what I ordered but still I've had an equivalent experience at sushi places anywhere in the states - so not an unique experience to be had here by any means. Seems this place is mostly for corporate finance lunches. Service was also pretty poor for a $100 lunch for one - waitress failed to clear plates even when bringing new ones. The food was decent, but again I'd suggest finding a $$ sushi place elsewhere that will likely leave you more more satisfied. read more

This place is wonderful! We came for lunch so it wasn't busy at all but I have heard that reservations at dinner is recommended. We both decided to be daring and let the waiter serve what they thought was best. We told them a few things we didn't enjoy and they came together with a beautiful menu that consisted of a couple different types of maki, a scallop salad, and wagyu beef carpaccio. It was a perfect mixture of taste, flavors and color. It was complemented with a couple japanese beers, a bottle of red wine and a beautiful pot of green tea. No dessert because we were so full but next time I'm sure we will enjoy that. Service was wonderful, decor elegant and the food stunning. Id love to be treated to this place again! read more

Terrible service... I don't know if it's Oslo, or what. Their saving grace is Fillip, who is a delight and very generous. Food: scallops, salmon, and halibut are local and delicious. The soft shell crab is yummy. Their edamame with spicy tomato and their red miso soup are good too. So many restaurants seem to take the service and timing between meals for granted, Hananmi happens to be one! Additionally the rice for the sushi is off, it's a bit under cooked, and some of the traditional sushi dishes has been altered, not for the better! If you are looking for a place to be seen (aka posh atmosphere, yes even in Oslo), as well as to watch the sunset then Hananmi is perfect for it! read more

The best service and food I have had in Norway!

Amazing dinner. This was our ONE big night out to eat in Oslo while we were there a few weeks ago. With a group of 18 people traveling together, it was near impossible to get everyone under one roof for a meal, but it happened HERE. And it was amazing. The staff was super attentive to our group. Everyone in customer service in Oslo speaks perfect English, so everyone in the group was able to communicate with them. It was a dinner of chef's choice, so we had no idea what exactly was coming, but that is what made it fun. The staff asked each and every one of us whether anyone had any food allergies, so that they could look out for our health while preparing food. A few of my key favorites were the Ninja cocktail we had while waiting for our table, the kobe beef, lamb, and plentiful, PLENTIFUL fish and sashimi orders that were coming to the table. With a loud group, it was hard to hear all of what they told us they were serving, but it was all delicious. The view and location is amazing. read more
