Based on the awful reviews here and elsewhere I decided to take the LIRR when heading to my friend's bachelorette weekend in Greenport, NY about two months ago. While on the second leg of the ride there I happened to sit next to an older gentleman and had a short and nice conversation with him. Out of curiosity I have asked him if he ever takes the Hampton Jitney when commuting to the city and he said he does and that he definitely recommends it. Given that and one of the bridesmaids having a positive experience getting to Greenport, NY I decided to give it a try. Originally myself and the bridesmaid with whom I was heading back to the city purchased tickets for a later bus time but ended up leaving earlier than expected. While waiting for the Hampton Jitney at the bus station, which is located right next to the train station, I was wondering whether I mad a mistake. One reason for taking the Jitney is that it runs more often than the train, and during the summer the trains were only running part of the way and then switching to a bus, which seemed to be just as bad of an option. I felt that way until the bus, which was a few minutes late, came. Since our tickets were for a different time the driver had us wait for everyone to get on prior to letting us on. It was fair but annoying, we had no issues getting a seat though as this was the first stop. The ride itself though was extremely comfortable, both in terms of the seats, the temperature in the bus (usually buses tend to blast the AC as if you're sitting in a fridge) and the cleanliness. A lady was giving out small bottled waters and a snack for each passenger, which is a nice touch that makes it feel. I believe that there were plugs for charging as well. The bathroom was just ok, but it was relatively clean. We did get stuck in some traffic on the way to Manhattan but that's expected when taking any bus (or driving). All in all, I had a good experience and I am no longer vary of taking it (at least the North Fork line).. read more

Someone should start a competitively priced business to go to Long Island and the Hamptons, like the Chinatown buses that go to Philly, Washington, Manhattan, etc. I've been taking the regular Jitney (not Ambassador class) for twenty years and nothing makes what they charge worth it. Their buses are old and the seats hard and rickety. They don't return calls or emails, except to take ticket sales. They have a few frustrating rules about the coupon tickets they sell. Their schedule chart is incomprehensible. The buses are never on time. The only thing good is that it's faster than the train, but the price is three times as expensive or more. It's just amazing to me that no one has been able to compete with them. Is it a political thing? Do they have friends in high places blocking competition? PLEASE someone offer a cheaper alternative. Then nothing I'm saying would matter. $10 to go to Philly makes any problem insignificant. Paying $45 for the same trip, you better have a good service. read more

I normally drive, so my experience with the Hampton Jitney is limited to a round trip ride from the city. Overall the Jitney is comfortable and convenient. The bus leaves on time and does its best to stick to schedule (traffic permitting). There is wifi on board as well as outlets. I highly recommend making reservations in advance as the bus I was on was sold out and it wasn't even peak season (a Tuesday in then fall). My one complaint is that the stop in Southampton can be a bit long, particularly on the trip into Manhattan. read more

From the moment I boarded, Nick and Richie made my trip safe, pleasant and on schedule. These gentlemen are true professionals in every sense of the word. Looks like from the reviews people have hit or miss experiences. My husband and I personally had no issues, but we have only taken this once and could have just gotten lucky. It seemed a bit disorganized when the bus first pulled up but honestly it's so much better than the LIRR and not that much more expensive. Comfortable seats, you can actually sleep (they turned off the lights - we took the 10:30 pm shuttle and were in midtown by 1:15 am), they give you snacks and water, and it seemed pretty safe. There was a bus driver who kept asked her assistant for coffee and had her assistant make calls for her and handle whatever else she needed. Curious to know how the ambassador line is and would definitely take this again! Would just recommend booking in advance for weekend shuttles because we weren't able to take it on the way there because it was sold out until the afternoon. read more

I was worried about taking the Ambassador based on other reviews, but I just took it yesterday (a Friday in Aug at 4:40 pm) and it was fantastic. Showed up on time, polite professional staff, comfortable ride, snack and drink service and a movie. We didn't hit any traffic so we were even a bit ahead of schedule. Horrendous. They have us on a bus that on the outside looks new, but on the inside looks like it's from the 1970's. It's cramped and old and smells terrible. Plus, what is with this new stop in Calverton?? We've been on the road for an hour and aren't any closer to the city. This service used to be great / is awful now. Things keep going from bad to worst in the Jitney. It used to be a easy and relatively comfortable way to get to the North Fork. Now it is just ridiculous. If we didn't have prepurchased books of tickets that significantly reduce the price I would definitely be switching to the train. Buses packed like sardines and not cleaned. Regular breakdowns or stops from over heating on side of road. I would get it if it was cheap (maybe) but full price is $39?? Ridiculous. read more

I've taken the Jitney countless times before owning a car and when I didn't rent a car to come out for my summer trips. Generally the service is pretty friendly, although it can be a little spotty. Busses usually run on time although they can get really crowded and they have overbooked on rare occasion that I know of. I wish they'd make sure the busses were clean before loading a new trip toether. People are really selfish and messy, but they need someone to come through and take all the trash away before loading new passengers. I'll be taking the Jitney again and again, but prefer my own ride. read more

You have to pay extra and use ambassador it's much more comfortable and I have never had any issues. The regular jitney has turned into a cramped cattle car with old beat up overcrowded buses that actually are wrapped with advertisements on the windows so you can't even see anything on this long ride which is quite outrageous. After reading the reviews are was ready for the worst, but it was FINE! Bus was clean and air conditioned, driver was polite, attendant both ways was professional and friendly. We got as many waters as we wanted, I was able to plug in and charge my phone, and the bus is quiet as they don't want people yakking away on their phones, unless it is an emergency, but can use computer or text on phone (there's WIFI). As a trauma nurse, I was super happy to see they had shoulder/seatbelts, although not everyone used. The bathroom was fine. I really really don't get why the reviews are so awful. read more

Pretty horrible experience overall. Going from Manhattan to Sag Harbor - Specifically asked the driver twice if the bus was going to Sag Harbor or if we needed to transfer. Bus driver said yes and that we should stay on the bus. Then when we got to Southampton he told us the information we were given was wrong. He made us get off the bus in the middle of the night on the side of a street. I had to pay a $50 Uber ride to my final destination. Going from Sag Harbor to Manhattan - Had to transfer at Bridgehampton. We were told the transfer bus would pick us up at 1:15. Instead we had to wait an extra 30 minutes for the correct bus to arrive at 1:45. While we were waiting they kept telling us they can't control the traffic and that there's always traffic this time of the day. Shouldn't the Jitney company consider bad traffic if it happens daily? Why did we have to stand out in the sun for 45 minutes? Why can't the arrival time be more accurate? Never taking this again. Give me my money back. read more

I would recommend any other service than Hampton jitney. They are always late. The buses are cramped. The service is mediocre, they have attitude and are definitely not friendly. The buses stink. They even added a service stop in calverton/riverhead which adds 20-30 minutes extra to the trip. Do yourself a favor rent a car or take a train if the schedule allows. read more

Had a particularly horrible experience with a jitney showing up that bad management managed to make worse. I spoke with Lakeyia on the phone who is in "customer service" - she had, quite possibly, the worst attitude of anyone I've spoken to (who is supposed to be providing 'service') - I will specifically not be riding the Jitney again because of this experience and the icing on the cake which was Lakeyia. read more

I have never written a Yelp review in my life. But this was the worst experience of my life. So many things went wrong, and the customer service could not have been less helpful. My family and I were booked on a 325 bus from west hampton to NYC. We got in line; however, many others did not get into the formed line. When the bus pulled up these people pushed ahead and got on the bus, leaving myself and my family members including my 81 year old grandmother behind. We were told that the bus was overbooked and there were no seats for us. We were told that the next bus was 10 minutes away. A few minutes later a bus does come, but we are told that he cannot drive us to the city, he is only driving us to manorville where we will be waiting for our next bus. An hour later, and we are still waiting in the parking lot for the bus to take us into the city. The problems got worse when I called customer service. The woman on the phone refused to help in anyway. I asked to speak with her supervisor and she would not give me the supervisors name. I asked for her name and she hung up on me. I called back and spoke with another woman named Maria. Maria helped a little and did say that they would refund half of our fare. I felt that the entire cost should be refunded. Maria claimed that the bus was not overbooked and this was "standard procedure". Meaning that if there is not room for you on the bus, you are forced to wait for an hour on another bus and that is acceptable. Never in my life have I dealt with such a poorly run company and horrible customer service. They turned a great weekend into a really terrible ending. Thanks a lot jitney! read more

Had a great trip into the city this morning except for one verbal dissatisfied passenger who states he has ridden this bus for 30 years to NYC. If you are going way way way eastward out to the pretty part of long island, the Hampton Jitney is the best way to travel by quite a substantial margin. I love my organs, so driving on the Long Island Expressway is far too much like playing high-stakes Frogger for my taste. The Long Island Railroad is a good idea, and affordable, but the timetable seems to have been designed for people who find inconvenience a stimulating challenge. The Jitney is clean and departs from midtown every hour or so. They give you pretzels, and you can reserve a seat in advance over the internet/interweb/webnets. Unless you are travelling at rush hour on a friday, you are quite likely to have a whole row to yourself, which means you can spend the two hour journey in the midst of a happy, comfortable fort made of your personal belongings. This is far preferable to suffering through a wooze-inducing flourescent ordeal on the train. A round trip is about fifty bucks, which is not so bad when you consider that a peak train from nyc to bridgehampton is twenty dollars each way. If you can afford to lay out the cash, a value pack of tickets brings the Jitney price down to twenty-one dollars per ride, which makes a weekend at the beach pretty viable, even for people like myself who buy used pants on sale and pay for espresso with nickels. read more

AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL Let's be honest, if you're trying to get to Manhattan from the Hamptons, this is one of just a few options available to you (other buses/trains run far and few between). They have buses leaving almost every hour during high season. But be warned, you will not enjoy your experience. RESERVATIONS: If you'd like, you can reserve a seat on a bus with one of two options: 1) Pay now ($28) or 2) pay on board ($32). BEWARE, if you miss your bus for any reason with the "pay now" option, you will NOT be guaranteed a spot on a later bus. You will have to PAY AGAIN. This is because with a reservation, they "hold a spot for you." Understandable if they followed their own rules, but they don't check names and reservations until 30 minutes into a ride. Meaning, they fill the bus to maximum capacity without any regards to reservations. Yes, I've seen this happen and watched many people get left behind as they stuffed a bus nearly full at one stop and were unable to take more than just a few at the next stop. Again, leaving many others to wait until the next bus... a full hour later. LATE LATE LATE: These buses are almost always late. Generally between 15-30 but I've waited at most 50 minutes to board a bus in East Hampton to Manhattan. There were no apologies made on behalf of the staff, instead just rude mutterings. Nor do they make any effort on behalf of customer service to right the situation. STAFF: Completely unknowledgeable in regards to the operations for which they work. Don't ask questions, they won't be able to answer you anyway. Hospitality? Don't expect to find any either. The attendants aren't trained any further than collecting your money and shoving Goldfish in your face. THE BUSES ITSELF: Often a hit or miss. Usually pretty dusty and dirty but not unbearable. While walking in on the crammed bus today, I immediately dashed for the first open row of seats only to find a giant wad of freshly chewed gum sitting erect, in the center of the window seat... Nice clean-up... Next I made my way all the way to the back of the bus, to the last available row. Broken seats. Not just broken as in they can't recline, (some of which can't)... But broken as in every time we stop I slide forward and when we pick up speed I slide back. OVERALL: AWFUL. I can't think of any other company that takes less pride in their employees, service and product. I guess being the primary bus service from Manhattan to the South Fork, they can get away with it. Will I stay away? Probably not. Maybe I'm masochistic. Who knows. What I do know is that they have a lot of buses running throughout the day. Sh*tty buses if that. read more

I had a reservation from the airport connection at 11 AM. I called at 10:35 to be sure the bus would stop and confirm my reservation. I was assured it would stop. Iy return did not and when I called to cancel my return trip I found out I would be charged the cancellation fee for both trips. The bus passed the stop on a previous trip about 2 years ago, so this is a second time and why I called to confirm. I really am not a fan of the Jitney any more. I used to rely on it for a comfortable ride to eastern Long Island, but now I find the LIRR to not only be a faster trip, but more comfortable. --The Jitney is not efficient AT ALL. There are way too many pick up locations in Manhattan, and if you get on at 86th and Lex you can honestly expect it to take 4 hours to get to your destination. --Another huge problem I have with the Jitney is how uppity it's become. I usually take the 3:20 on Fridays, and the attendant panders to a couple of old, rich riders. I can't tell you how many times I've been on the Jitney and an old guy has his seat reclined all the way back and the attendant won't do anything about it. I'm only 5' 2"...if I'M uncomfortable because of a lack of leg room, you know there's a problem. If they think talking on cell phones is rude, how the hell is it OK to allow riders to do that to each other? And if you're one of those people (because I see reviews here that say "ERMERGERD YOU CAN PUT YOUR BAGS NEXT TO YOU SO NO ONE SITS WITH YOU AND YOU CAN RECLINE YER SEAT ALL DA WAY BACK") then you can go to hell, s'il vous plait. --It's a rip off for how long it takes and how uncomfortable it is. I can save $7 taking the train, and I can get a MUCH better meal than the crappy, processed snack packs they hand out on the Jitney for that. read more

Splurge on the Ambassador (luxury) line... it's much roomier, snacks are better, and has hardwood floors throughout. I've been a jitney regular since they took the route over from Sunrise Coach. I must say, especially this year, that their service has gone downhill. 1 out of 3 buses smell like toilet and the air conditioning isn't working on 3/4 of the buses (or they don't train drivers how to use it properly). If only the Long Island Rail Road had more service to the North Fork I would certainly be switching to the LIRR. I am on the jitney, sweating as I write this. Half the bus has nodded off because it's unbearably warm. I wonder how many of the buses are maintained properly (I've had it rain from the ceiling on a bus before and had to hold napkins above my head from getting rained on). I fear for the summer, especially because the state of air conditioning on their buses. The hotter the buses get, the more it smells like toilet. Do yourself a favor and find another way to get out to the north and south forks of Long Island if you can. If not enjoy sweating and the pee smell! read more

Great service and reasonably priced. I usually drive up to the Hamptons but ended up taking the Jitney for a change. Clean vehicle and good service made it a very pleasant experience. Great value and the fact you can switch off and just relax rather than stress out driving in traffic was the main benefits. Most people drive to the Hamptons as you definitely need a car out there but if you have wheels there already or simply don't need one then give the Jitney a go. read more

I read with disbelief an email they sent me claiming that the 11:45 Jitney I was booked on 8/12 indicated that their GPS logs showed that they stopped at 69th street at 11:50 and picked up passengers. Another passenger and I were waiting at the stop from 11:30 When one Jitney stopped i asked if it was going to Montauk i was told no and that it would be the next one. The next Jitney simply by passed the stop. In addition, when I booked my reservation for the return trip by phone I was not given the option to prepay and wound up paying the additional $5 Lastly, the outlets did not work on this bus and I could not do the work I had planned,. When I tried to reach customer service e by phone and email it was impossible Next time I will take LIRR!!!!!!! read more

The inconsistency in every aspect of this "service" amazes me. The only guarantee is that it will NEVER arrive on time. Sometimes the staff is courteous, sometimes they're condescending and completely disorganized. Snacks and water are sometimes offered, other times they run out. On my most recent odyssey with them, another bus broke down or the bathroom door was jammed and they tried to cram the stranded customers on our bus. Of course, the driver miscounted seats and we were overbooked, which meant we didn't leave for another 25 minutes while they attempted to sort this out. Of course the driver made no effort to communicate this to us. She did, however, angrily make an announcement about someone's music being too loud (no one else could hear it) and then ranted that she'd get a ticket if we drive an overcrowded bus (not our problem). This last ride was such a cluster and the service consistently mediocre and not worth $25-$30. I think I'll be taking the LIRR from now on. Update: there was no hand sanitizer on the bus. I politely asked and the attendant just shrugged Update 2: because they had two combine 2 buses aka 2 routes, we're now making all these random stops and will be getting in 45 minutes later read more

This is my first time EVER providing feedback but felt compelled to do. Booking process great, Curb staff amazing, but AC was terrible, perhaps impacted by heat and humidity which made matters worse. bus staff seemed a bit cavalier, 'we can go back and wait for another bus or stay with this". While an accurate statement perhaps a bit of an apology and the rear of the bus was way worse perhaps as the blower loses power as it progresses through the bus. In the summer Jitney should make this a priority . Look to LIRR if u are willing to navigate Penn Station, which I will do next time. read more

They have a bus driver who is seriously deranged... I hope that he has since been terminated, but I question their judgment in hiring him in the first place. He stopped the bus in the street in Bridgehampton, stood up and walked back to yell at a person who was using her phone. She said she had a medical emergency and who knows or cares if she actually did. The point is, he stopped in the middle of the street and if he can't operate a bus because 1 person is talking, then I think he should find a profession that doesn't involve having 30-50 (?) peoples' lives in his hands. City bus drivers have to deal with a lot more noise than that and they fare just fine, so I know it's possible. Also, dude, I was on the freaking bus for 3.5 hours and he decided to prolong the trip by being an asshole? I also hate the policy where you have to pay an additional $10 for a dog that's perfectly quiet and on your lap or on the floor. I don't have to pay extra on the train. I now try to take the train whenever possible, but as I said in my prior review, there aren't enough LIRR times, so it's not as feasible as possible as I would like. read more

I've taken this bus a few times, it's pretty nice! Leather and material seats, plenty of leg room, they allowed me to put two bags underneath and one carry on. Pretty convenient since it leaves from multiple parts of the city, I hopped on at east 86th. One of the nicest parts? Snacks on the seat when you get on! read more

I'm from Arizona so have a very limited exposure to the Jitney but I must say, I was very disappointed. We were all set. We had made our reservations well in advance, prepaid for everything. We arrived to our pickup location for the Jitney about a 1/2 hour early, about 9pm for a 935pm reservation. Our first hint of concern should have come from the bus stop itself. It was situated in a boarded up gas station which was in the pitch black with no lights or anything. One of the panes of glass had been busted out. Not exactly inspiring confidence. Very scary location. If I had been a single woman I probably would have really been nervous. So we waited. And waited. 945pm rolled by and we finally saw a Hampton Jitney rolling down the street towards us. We breathed a sigh of relief and then panic set in as the bus did not stop. We thought, "Maybe they're just going to come back around. This is a bit of a tight spot so..." About 10pm we started really panicking and called Hampton Jitney. Their way of apologizing (without actually saying sorry) was to refund our $30 ticket and comp us on the next bus at 1030pm. What were we to do? So we waited another 1/2 hour in the pitch black. After another frantic phone call to make sure they were still coming for us at 1035pm the Jitney comes to what can be best described as a rolling stop. They threw open the doors and my wife and I jumped in the bus with our luggage. The bus driver then threw us a angry glance and began berating me for calling to check on him when he was only five minutes late. I suppose he didn't realize that to us, he was almost 2 hours late but I decided not to argue with he guy I was relying on to get me to our condo. After dealing with the classy clientele on the bus(sarcasm) we finally found some empty seats. The body odor smell wasn't TOO cloying and we arrived at our destination. Our return trip went exactly as expected. The Jitney arrived on time. The bus driver was very friendly and stowed our luggage for us. We arrived to our drop off spot without incident. This is the only reason I gave a two star review. Take from this what you will. If I ever take a Jitney again it will be in the daytime. It seemed to me that once the sun went down all efficiency and sense of customer service went out the window. I would recommend that if you make reservations that you call same day to reconfirm that they have you on the list for pickup to avoid vein stranded like we were. Probably would try the train out next time instead. read more

This is THE MOST OVER-RATED service I have ever seen. I'm not a large man, merely 5'11" tall, and I was cramped into my seat like a sardine, the person in front of me insisting on reclining her seat gave me no room to place even a book on my lap, myself & the guy next to me were all elbows every time we both had to reach for something. I have never seen so many people fooled into thinking this is a "comfortable" ride... it's just a "ride"...a cramped greyhound at best. Must be the use of the name "Jitney" and people suddenly think it's an adventure. Well it is, if you like 3rd-world type of transportation. I've had better buses in Mexico. The offered "Wi-Fi" that they bragged about was there but gives you slower-than-dial-up speeds that it's not even worth the tease. Waiting 5 minutes to download a single email is a sorry service. They'd be better off not even offering. Personnel: I couldn't even understand the thick accent over the intercom, and had no idea what was being offered or spoken about until the person came down the aisle with a basket. The bragged-about "snacks" were insulting, little school-lunch sized Utz brand plain chips & pretzels? Sorry, but from where I come from that is the bottom of the barrel... always the last snacks left at any gathering that no one wants. Hint: Bring your own snack. And lastly, I have never been so COLD on a bus ride. Unlike other public buses where the A/C comes from the top-middle and trickles down, this comes from the bottom of the windows--right where your shoulder or arm touches if you're sitting at the window seat. Trust me when I tell you that if after 3 hours of cramped service and your arm touching that a/c vent your not completely uncomfortable and your arm is blue, then consider some swamp land in Florida I'll sell you for really cheap. Hint: bring a blanket Luggage: I had my luggage put on the bus in East Hampton and when it came out once arriving in NYC it was covered with dust & dirt so heavy that I had to spend 3 minutes wiping it off. When the driver pulled it out and I mentioned that his luggage bay was filthy he completely ignored me as if he couldn't be bothered. A 5-minute sweeping could so easily prevent 40 bags from being covered with their mess. Not speaking for the whole fleet, but this particular driver obviously didn't care. Price: Because the Jitney costs about $20 more round-trip ($50more for "Ambassador service") than the LIRR train, I was expecting superior service with the personal amenities I had read about which gave you a much more comfortable ride. However, anytime you use transportation that is relying on the same roads that peak traffic also travels on, you can count on delays, construction, the stop-start rocking motion of a bus driver creeping through traffic, and the typical frustrations of feeling like you're almost there but still oh-so-far away since you're only traveling at 5mph. And....don't be fooled: just like the train, the bus also has a bathroom, however it is right _next_ to 6 seats and within the breeze of another 8. At least on the double-decker train the bathroom is often at least 10 feet removed from an actual seat. Much more civilized. I took a train OUT to the Hamptons at the peak of Summer and the Jitney back and the difference was outstanding. Though I really wanted to think the Jitney was going to be better, I was SO much more comfortable on the train where there was ample room with other comfortable & courteous people, where you can even find seats to face your party your traveling with. Even the rare case where you didn't get your own row of seats to yourself, I had room to lay out a laptop and check on emails or play a relaxing game without even an elbow touching the person next to me. The train smoothly glides to a stop rather than the sudden stop/start of a bus ride, and though, sure, the train very occasionally has a system delay, it's MUCH rarer than the bus getting held up in traffic. I'm giving HJ 2 stars because, yes, it is good to have alternatives to any single form of transportation. So I'm not saying I don't think HJ should exist---I would just like them to come through on their promises and hype and more expensive prices --as well as improve their buses, services, & personnel to at least be comparable for the price. If I could give a zero star I would. I am currently on a bus from the north fork area to NYC and the it's smells like someone has opened a 1,000 car fresheners and I am having an allergic reaction to them where I can't stop coughing. I've called HJ twice and they have refused to refund me my money if I got off at the next stop. The bus driver was extremely rude when I told him about it. So now I am stuck coughing the entire time to NYC.... skip the bus and take the LIRR!!!!!!!!!! Worst ride ever!!!!! read more

If only there were some competition, then maybe this overpriced jitney would improve. The busses clearly are under serviced as there are frequent breakdowns, WiFi is most often not working, along with the bathrooms. The only thing I can say positive is that the stops are conveniently located. The systems are poor. Seriously jitney has a lot to learn from Uber, Via, or most car companies in this decade. Why not let us know on an app whether we will be waiting 10 minutes or an hour for arrival. Competition clearly needed! read more

Awful customer service. Booked a trip online. Missed my bus by a min, tried to get on the next one and they wanted to charge again. Sorry but really????? Not to mention the lady on the phone nor the lady at the bus stop were pleasant or helpful at all. It's a shame. read more
