Beds were sloppily made and sheets were backwards

Over a period of 10 years the stars are decreasing. I left my first 5 star review 6 years ago here on yelp. 4 years ago I left a 4 star review. I've been staying at this location for 10 yrs when I'm town for business. Now I'm a Hilton Brand fan. We stay at Hampton Inns all the time. I've seen this particular property decrease in professionalism, customer service and cleanliness. They are painting the outside with a really trendy color - good job. But it doesn't mean you don't vacuum the hallways for 3 days. Yikes come on guys. The hallways were obviously unkempt. The elevator was also in need of a sweeping and a mopping. The walls inside the elevator needing a good wipe down. Management - get your team and hold a briefing. You can't blame covid anymore for the lack of cleanliness. I get the fact that each location needs to be upgraded through the years. This isn't about upgrading - this is about caring and keeping the property clean.

It's nice they still provide some sort of breakfast

As things would work out, we found ourselves in a situation where we needed to be in two places, within a day of each other, and neither was close to home. And so, we found ourselves in need of a hotel room. Upon entry, you see the front desk area has been arranged such that there is really only one area where you can approach. Second thing is, although the breakfast area is still set up, there are signs all over saying the area is closed. Everything was clean and in good maintenance. Check in does require you to sign the forms as usual. They have hand sanitizer there for you to use. The clerk was wearing a mask during our check in. She was very friendly, answering questions and explaining hotel policy. The room was quite clean and once we were settled in, any nerves I may have had about staying in a hotel abated. There was no issue during our stay with anything; plenty of hot water, towels, amenities, and so on. Breakfast is served in a box that you pick up from reception and bring back to your room. There is no toaster for the bagel, and though I know people who do not toast their bagels, I am not one of them and this was very hard for me to enjoy. The box breakfast includes 2 hard boiled eggs that come in a 'factory sealed' plastic wrap and taste pretty bad. I'm not sure if they are pickled (don't think so) or if the liquid they are in has some seasoning, but they sure didn't taste like eggs. There is salt and pepper in there for the egg; should have tried that maybe. There was peach yogurt in my box, and normally I enjoy peach yogurt, but this brand was too sweet for me at breakfast. They are trying, and I did appreciate the effort. Just wish I could have toasted my bagel. Coffee is also available from reception. This hotel is nice, well maintained, clean. It is a bit out of the way to find, but with GPS it was fine. Just be prepared: the turn into their drive comes up quickly.

Travel for business so I spend a lot of time in hotels. I do stay at a lot of Hilton properties and have never had an issue, until this last stay. Do to limited accommodations in the area and to avoid a 30-60 min drive round trip each day to my client, I was happy when I found this Hampton Inn. I don't usually stay at Hamptons , most of them are older properties with a darker & older decor than I like to spend my nights in. And as expected this property was dark and the decor very outdated. Upon check-in I was asked to sign a form regarding smoking. I asked if it was to say "I won't smoke in the room" and was told yes. I ask for non-smoking rooms where ever I stay. I actually bring air fresheners with me always just in case my room has any odd odors. It's a good thing that I do because it was obvious when I opened the door to my room someone had been smoking in it at some point and the hotel cleaning crew had tried to cover it. Though bad over time in the room your sinuses loose scent to smells that are constant so I was able to endure. And it wasn't so bad that it affecting my things & clothing when I would leave. I did let the hotel know and they gave me extra points on my Honors program as an apology. But more issues came up after. My last morning there as I was taking a shower and leaned back under the water to rinse my hair I saw something on the ceiling. After getting out of the shower and putting on my glasses I saw black mold on the ceiling in the corner over the shower. The area it took up was about 2 ft long and a 1 ft wide. I then looked over the entire ceiling in the bathroom and saw mold in two other corners of the ceiling. I wanted to make sure that this was reported and not just cleaned up or covered up so I did not tell the property staff but reported it to the Hilton organization. Again to address I was offered points to compensate. I quickly let them know that was not my end goal. My concern was for the health and safety of future quests. They assured me that this would be taken care of and that they would be contacting the property to have it addressed. I can only hope it is addressed correctly. If you stay here, check your bathroom ceilings!

Dirty and old feeling. Looks new and nice on the outside but not once you're inside. Walls thin, can easily hear neighbors.

The drive to Plumb Island through Newburyport was the perfect introduction to our romantic, north shore getaway. Being from Phoenix, we look forward to our cold, winter adventure each year and neither of us had been anywhere north of Boston before. Before our arrival, communication with the Blue was informative and hand a personal feel. Obviously, the Blue caters to summer beach-goers, and the reserved parking area near the hotel would definitely be a huge plus for folks competing for parking spots, but in winter, there are very few people or cars on the entire island. The Blue is a quaint little hotel nestled on the beach in a neighborhood of New England beach homes. We were happily greeted at the front desk by Blue staff and the General Manager. They tendered to our every need and surprised us with a fabulous fruit and chocolate anniversary gift waiting for us in the room. The room was beautiful with a classic and modern beach feel. Sliding glass doors open up to a wooden deck with a fabulous view of the Atlantic Ocean. We could hear the crashing waves while sitting inside beside the gas fireplace to read. It was magical! Also magical was the bed! We haven't slept that well in years! The bed was so comfortable and my wife loved the pillows so much that she bought the very same ones for home the day we returned. And don't forget the two hot tubs! There is nothing quite as enjoyable as relaxing in a steaming, bubbling hot tub while it's snowing all around you. Honestly, the "hot tubs available" filter was probably what highlighted the Blue to me during my search for this trip. One hot tub is on the second floor deck, overlooking the beach and the second is hidden under the pine trees at the end of a short sidewalk across the street from the main building. Both were large enough for probably 6 people, clean and well maintained. Again, it was February so we had them all to our crazy selves the whole week. The beach is beautiful! There is direct, private access from the second floor of the Blue, via a wooden boardwalk. The beach is sandy with very few rocks. I didn't see any seaweed or anything washing up on shore, but it was February, so I didn't expect to see a whole lot of anything living coming out of the water. Every morning we enjoyed a beautiful sunrise over the ocean while we drank some local coffee delivered direct to the room. Oh yeah, breakfast! Each morning the staff dropped off and adorable wicker basket with fresh, local breakfast offerings plus that wonderful carafe of coffee. We had different breakfast each day, to include quiche, overnight oats, fresh fruit, biscuits, and bacon. Just the right amount for the two of us and we couldn't wait to see what breakfast surprise would arrive each morning. Although Plumb Island may feel remote from the business of the Boston-metro area, the location was great for dipping down to Salem without hitting any traffic, or popping up to New Hampshire for a sleighride through the forest. One morning, after a small nor'easter blew through, our SUV got stuck in the parking lot snow. No worries! The General Manager of the Blue came out to hail down a plow and personally helped push us out. Now that's service! Overall, I would wholeheartedly recommend the Blue -Inn on the Beach to anyone looking for a romantic beach getaway. If you're looking for a less Metropolitan vacation with the proximity to get to Boston in under an hour, the Blue can't be beat. We will definitely be coming back. Maybe even in the summer next time!

In 1880, the stable was razed, and in its place, the present Essex Street Inn was built in a conservative version of the style known as Victorian eclectic. To set expectations, the rooms are cozy. The suites are larger, but since we were only here for one night, we opted for a standard room. Luckily, we were on the first floor, as there are no elevators and steep stairs. They do have a parking lot, which is key during the high season. Our room was very comfortable, and our bed was perfectly plush. There is a K-Cup coffee maker and cable TV in the room. Breakfast is OK and should satisfy most. There is a Starbucks a short walk away and plenty of other coffee shops and breakfast venues in the area. The location is perfect, on a side street, walking distance from shopping, bars, and restaurants. Plum Island is also a short ride away.

I'm not someone who rushes to Yelp, but this stay earned the effort…read more I recently stayed at The Merchant for the second time, and whatever magic existed during my first visit is gone. The biggest issue: the hotel hosted a large, ticketed public event that completely took over the main lobby--with zero advance notice to guests. I woke up to a lobby packed with strangers and nowhere to sit or gather with my family. I've never stayed at a hotel that allows a public event to fully overrun its only common area without warning paying guests. And no, "just go somewhere else" isn't an option--there is nowhere else. There are no additional common spaces and no elevator. Since we were meeting elderly family members, climbing three to four flights of stairs to our room wasn't possible. The lobby being unusable wasn't a minor inconvenience; it was a dealbreaker. Operationally, things only went downhill. Check-in is at 4pm, but arrive after 5pm and there's no one on-site to check you in. Checkout, however, is rigidly 11am. Our room was never cleaned during the stay, despite leaving the "please clean" tag on the door. Because of the limited staffing hours, we couldn't even get fresh towels. Then there's the mouse. I saw one in the common area and notified staff. Nothing was done. Food is left out uncovered for guests, which I promptly avoided--because "boutique hotel meets rodent buffet" isn't really my vibe. What's also new: some sort of train or underground rumbling that shakes the building roughly every hour, offering a front-row seat to what feels like an earthquake simulator. If this were a budget motel or a Holiday Inn, I might shrug and move on. But this is a $500-per-night hotel, and at that price point, these issues are unacceptable. Until these problems are addressed, I wouldn't recommend staying here--and I certainly won't be returning.

The rooms are evidently undergoing some renovations; however, I don't think there is anyway to renovate this to today's expectations and standards. The heating and cooling unit is loud enough that if you are trying to watch TV you have to turn the volume up when it kicks in and down when it cycles down. The floor had a downhill tilt (not as noticeable in shoes but definitely if you are barefoot). A laminate wood floor has been added as an "update" at sometime, which would have been the time to level up the slope. The ceiling and areas around the heat/air unit all have crazy gaps and need better trim work. Let's talk ventilation and insulation. I swear the ducts just connect one room to another. We listened to the kids next door carrying on till after 11 and the parents evidently didn't care about other guests and the running up and down the halls and hollering during other times was like they were in our room with us. Our room was over the function room and I think the music was louder in our room than it was when we had been downstairs. The advertised "shared microwave" is just one in the lobby, not even one on each floor by the ice machines. We attended a function on Saturday night in the banquet hall. The serving staff was great and were hustling their butt's off. The food was a giant hit or miss!! Those who had pre-ordered the grilled sirloin had the home run meal. The rest of us struck out. The chicken was pounded so thin that it was dry all the way through except for a silver dollar sized area, those who got the ravioli found them to be under stuffed and lacked any kind of sauce so were also dry. If that wasn't bad enough everything was luke warm, but because I was hungry I ate the broccoli and penne . The salds were good, veggies were crispy. Dressing was spotty on some of them and well dressed on others. For the outrageous meal price for events, I am sure we will not be back. When we checked out there was no " how was your stay inquiry from staff, just a "there are no charges so you are all set"

Upon arrival, The floor was dirty (see photo), the tissue holder in the bathroom was rusty, and the baseboards were both dirty and covered with hair (see photos). The bathroom was stocked with no extra toilet paper or tissues, and the bath towels provided were tiny and felt more like hand towels than bath towels. The bedding wasn't much better - I found dirty pillow cases when I checked in. In terms of amenities, the room lacked the basics I'd expect from a hotel in this price range. There was no information about restaurants, hotel hours, or amenities provided in the room, and no phone or safe available. Service was also hit or miss. The valet consistently took around 15 minutes to bring the car, which is a long wait when you're trying to get somewhere. On top of that, I had requested feather-free (hypoallergenic) pillows and comforter, but it took two attempts and over an hour and a half after check-in to finally get it resolved. Overall, the hotel has potential because of its beachfront location, but the lack of cleanliness, poor room setup, and slow service made for a very frustrating experience. I expected much better for the price and would not stay here again unless significant improvements are made. When we brought our concerns up (again) upon check out they did wave the parking and resort fee's but we will not be returning... Perhaps the name should change to Trashworth.... Very disappointing
