The cheese selection unsurprisingly steals all the thunder. Other than a trip to France, I doubt that you will be able to find such choice and quality. To complete the list and tick all the boxes, The Cheese Block boasts fantastic meringues, baklava, fresh bread and an epicurean selection of condiments and confectionery. However, today there was an extremely grumpy man behind the counter who when I asked him to recommend a good strong cheddar, simply said: "There are loads of Cheddars at the end, take your pick". Well, the reason I asked was to get an expert recommendation, not to simply pick one out of several by chance. There was no one else in the shop, so it wasn't as if they were over run with other customers. I will probably try this place again, but it has been a little soured for me!

But why would American Express list a shop, unless of course they are signed up with American Express to accept Amex card payments? And several years running? The shop itself is tiny and you're constantly rubbing elbows while waiting and browsing, which is not a very good experience. The meats are OK, but quite a bit pricier than even Waitrose.

They have also recently started up a 'Cheese Club' membership where members receive a seasonal selection of farmhouse cheeses either monthly or bi-monthly. We are massive fans of the goat's milk gouda and Villarejo manchego, as well as the bagels that Mike, the owner, picks up from the Bagel Shop on Brick Lane each morning.

They have an excellent variety of quality cheeses including cheeses from the British isles. Their truffle cheese are particularly excellent. Service is very professional and those working at the store are very knowledgeable about the cheeses. While upscale with a traditional ambiance, the store is also fresh and modern.
