I would like to tile this review "The Veggie Burger That Never Was!".
I walked past this place on Saturday and looked through the window. I was pleased to see that it looked very child friendly. I could see toys, high chairs and children playing. This little restaurant is set in an old pub and has a nice feel to it. The open plan cooking facilities make it feel modern and fun. I thought it might be a great place to take my little one. I suggested this place to a friend who also has a little one who agreed. We met the next day and my friend brought his boy and another friend.
We started off by getting in and grabbing a table, which was slightly too big with a high chair, but we crammed in fine. We noticed immediately that the toilet said it was out of order, which is particularly with kids and little ones who may need their nappies changed. The staff though seemed to be using it, and locking and unlocking it by prodding a knife into the lock. The waitress came over and took our orders for beers (of which there was a nice selection) and water with straw for my daughter. Looking at the menu there didn't seem much for very little children. But that was ok as I share with my daughter.
When I am eating out with a vegetarian I like to also go for the veggie option. The menu said "Vegetarian Burger with mushrooms and halloumi cheese" which sounded nice. But when we asked the waitress what the vegetarian burger was actually made of she was more than a little vague and said something about a "sort of pate". This put me off as I imagined a grilled lump of various vegetable mash like the sort of thing you get from Iceland. So I opted for the cheese burger with potato wedges. It was a long wait...
After a very long time chatting, having fun, getting toys for the frustrated kids I finally got up to ask what was happening. Just as I was going to the counter the manager (I think) came with plates with our food on. We were very curious as to what the burger was made of. It just seemed to be a bap with mushrooms and halloumi cheese and a spreading of something like humus. My friend was a little concerned as he is allergic to sesame seed and thought it may be that. But he ate it anyway and didn't later come out in a rash. We still don't know what it was, and I don't really know if he really enjoyed it. My little girl enjoyed the chips, which I broke up for her, but not the burger which was ok.
We all had another beer with our meal, the wait had mean we had finished our first, and later we asked for the bill. When the manager came over with it I queried about the burger and she said "Oh there isn't a burger. It's quite clear on the menu that there isn't a burger. It's a paste." which I suppose was what the waitress meant. I thought it was odd that we had all looked at the menu and talked about a burger when it clearly stated that there wasn't one. So I looked at the menu - and photographed it - and have now posted it here. "Vegetarian Burger with mushrooms and halloumi cheese".
Anyway so my friends were very English about it and decided not to complain, and pay the bill (and appallingly a tip!) and never go back. What makes things worse is they are Australians and have no excuse.
Anyway, apart from all the moans I actually had a good time and quite liked the place. I hope it sorts itself out. The staff were friendly and it's difficult to find somewhere that is quite so child friendly. The staff seemed quite amused by my daughter running around. so a generous 3 for this visit. But do please get some veggie burgers and fix the toilet so we can change our children. We would have stayed longer and probably spent more. But we had to decamp to Costa. I'm not sure my friends will go back though. read more
