I have been coming to this little corner spot for years and seen them through a few changes (they used to have a piercing shop), so happy to see the store is still alive and amazing selections! Beach rentals are available and it's fantastic that this happens to be one of the few spots along the beach front that has some parking right across the street... first come first serve so good luck! lol just as easy to just take a Lyft down and walk the boardwalk all the way up to ocean beach and check out all the sights. Hamels is fantastic friendly and very helpful to things to check out in the area depending on what you're interested in. Cheapest bike rentals at the beach! Excellent customer service and the bikes were comfy.

In the '80s I used to rent Rollerblades and other items here when it was owned by the Hamels and always had a good experience. A couple of weeks ago, we had some friends in town who wanted to go bike riding with us, so they rented a couple of beach cruisers. Chains on both bike were completely rusted and one of the bikes had a severely bent rim. These are the result of not properly maintaining the bikes. I would never rent from this business again and neither will they. We'd be better off renting bikes from one of the nearby homeless camps. read more

When your wondering around the Mission Beach area there is an abundance of these types of shops that are all selling California merchandise and other collectibles you would typically find at these types of shops in tourist areas. This shop however is by far one of the better ones around as it's a good size and the prices are right where they should be plus the staff here is super nice and very helpful as Skyler helped us with one of the hoodies we decided to purchase and was super quick to screen print us a new one as we waited for a few minutes in the store browsing what was good. They have designs all over the walls so you can pick what one you want to have printed right away or select one of the already printed ones that are on the countless racks inside the store. Most of their designs were pretty cool and relevant to the area and culture making it totally one of the better shops around here to get something to remember your visit to Mission Beach! Overall this is an awesome store that I'm sure we will come back to visit again as we've been here a few times over the years and always had a positive experience at the castle! read more

SUSPECT BUSINESS PRACTICE Fair warning. If you are renting a bicycle from Hamel's, you need to be explicit about when you are returning it, if not, you will be charged for a full day. Even if you return it the very first thing in the morning when they open. When they rent you the bike, they will not ask you what time are you returning it, because if they do that, they will be losing money. They are making an extra 20 a day on their bicycles by not telling people you need to bring it in the night before, so you won't have to pay the full amount for a day that you won't even be using it. The manager who rented this bike was rude, would not listen to me as I tried to explain my confusion, he kept talking over me. This leads me to conclude he's had this argument many times. He was very defensive. I suggested to him that it would be good business if he helped his clientele, understand their policies better and told them beforehand-That it was worth the extra $20 he got from me that day for the lesson that I learned, and the lesson that he should've learned in helping his customers understand their policies better instead of making extra money on their confusion. I am a local girl. I grew up there my whole life and I just happened to need a bicycle for a couple of days, I will not be recommending to any friends that come in from out of town , that want to go experience where I grew up. Danny and Ray Hamel are very close friends of my family, since the early 60s, when they had their surf shop on Garnett by Crystal pier across the street from Maynards, where my mother Maria ran that club. this, is not how they would have handled this. Just like I remember, Hamel's, Mission Beach. I bought several roller skates here, bike tune ups, rentals, group outings, hang outs as a kid, spanning over 40 years now. Now I ride with my 12 year old, who just loves it. Tacos, after the ride is our routine. Its the greatest break for anyone, any time of year. Remember this as a nice little getaway. read more

Horrible business. Sexist cashier & terrible customer service. Charged me $50 for a sweatshirt that was advertised for $25 and all while selling the sweatshirt to me made belittling comments about how I, a petite colored woman, would want to ride the Belmont Park rides and would love it because I was like a "little kid" and it would be like a "perfect little Disneyland" for me. He then charged me double while I was engaging in this conversation with him. I should have asked what the price would be rather than just using the sign and price tag as an indication. Not at all worth it for poor quality fabric/clothing and terrible customer service. Don't spend your money at this establishment! Rent at your own risk. They don't provide safe bicycles. We rented a couple of cruisers and the seat post clamp broke during the ride because it was rusted through. Had to ride the bike back with a loose seat that swiveled and asked for a refund. All they offered was another rust bucket of a bike. Beware! read more

Hamel's in Mission Beach as been a fixture here for as long as I can remember. I remember when I was 13 years old coming out here just to watch the local pro skateboards jump off quarter pipes. Those were the days and no worries. My purpose now is to rent bikes for the boardwalk. My friends bring their own bikes for the boardwalk, but since I'm bikeless I have to rent them. For $8 an hour, it's not bad. The bikes are in just okay condition and the staff is great. Regardless how great the bike is or how the service was, nothing beats a nice ride up and down San Diego's beautiful boardwalk. read more

My buddies and I were having ourselves a Sunday funday, so we decided to scope out a decent bike rental spot. Most bike rentals at Mission Beach are pretty expensive and crowded. We stumbled across this shop just by walking on the boardwalk next to the roller coaster. We liked the fact that they had Rasta colored bikes and decided to check it out. For only $10, you can rent the bike for the whole day! The bikes got us from Mission Beach, all the wayyyyy to La Jolla! Overall, the condition of our bikes were decent. The seat comfort was above average and the handling of the bike was fine. Can't beat $10 rentals if you're only trying to get around. The one down fall was that my bell didn't work, so I had to scream at traffic in front of me. Bummer. I have been coming here with friends for over 20 yrs , well before I moved to SD area. Now that I live here , I always go out of my way to rent here (11 yrs -8-10 x a yr) when I don't feel like lugging our bikes down to beach. Well Saturday Dec 31 we go. Now I Usaually see the dark hair lady ( Sandra ? Sharon ?) And the cashier always diff as it is a seasonal job. I always pay cash and always tell them I will be anywhere from 2 hrs to all day. ( I never know due to pain) So cashier says how long ? I say " an hour or two, possibly all day." She says ok $40. Now I know a 2 hr rental on a tandom is $32 but its ok. They have done this with me Dozons of times and refunded the difference. Its standard M/O. Ok, no problem. So we come back after 1hr 40min.. She says ok hv nice day...huh? Not even 2 hrs. I said " you owe me $8 . " no , you said all day " me ; " NO...I Clearly said an hour or two MAYBE all day." I don't know. So now we hv a standoff she expects me to get lost. I just stand waiting. Finally S speaks up. What's the problem here ? Ok now due to my past here ( she recognizes me) I figure no problem. Well she says there is a new policy, its not done that way anymore. My girl asks to see the policy. S couldn't come up with it. Long story short, she wouldn't budge for a 20+ yr customer and all I got was a hand in my face ( figuratively speaking) I could go on, but she finally settled on giving me a free 2 hr rental next time. I DO NOT WANT ANYTHING FOR FREE. I want what's fair all around. I just want my $8. ( btw Im 58 and make a great living its the principal) so now I hv a piece of paper with a 2 hr rental on it. Well guess what. I WILL use the free rental. But after that we will always be bringing our own bikes. What a shame. A friend and I rented beach cruisers last week to bike the Mission Beach/PB boardwalk and loved the service at Hamel's. I've always noticed the rental shop since its large and right in the middle of everything in Mission Beach and am glad I finally checked it out... I will definitely go back again. We paid $7 each for an hour rental, and they gave us a lock and added a basket to our bikes to hold our purses. We ended up taking a little longer than planned (stopped for a couple margaritas at Lahunia Beach House and to play a game of beach volleyball in South Mission) but they didn't make us pay extra for our additional 1/2 hour detour. read more

Twas a beautiful day in San Diego, so what better way to enjoy the sun than to go to the beach? Since we haven't quite reached our Hot Toddy Beach Bodies yet, my sister, niece and I decided to work toward it by renting bikes. The most convenient place was at Hamel's since we were driving to Mission Beach anyway. Hamel's is right on the beach across from Belmont Park. The guys that worked there were really cool. The rate was $16 for 4 hours (not bad), but we only needed the rental for a two (2) hours. They weren't big ding dongs about it, so the two hour rate was $12 (I would've paid the $16, but hey, I like discounts, too!). The line in the back to to rent wasn't long, but the wait was long. Not sure why? Again, there were really nice when it was our turn to be helped and didn't feel rushed. Hm, maybe that's why? So, we rented 3 bikes, a bike lock and a basket; because my niece decided that she wanted to ride a bike with her Coach purse. When we got the bikes, they were beach cruisers, but somewhat rusted. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't expecting a Huffy or anything, I just think that the bikes should be more cared for. But oh well, I rode it anyway! When returning the bikes, again, they were cool. Very quick in checking out. My sister bought a water that she never drank, and the guy offered her to get a cold one out of the cooler. He didn't have to, but nice gesture. I was riding my bike down there the other day and couldn't resist stopping in to see if that idiot still worked there. He made me some terrible t-shirts like 8 years ago and tried to fight me when I wanted a refund and wouldn't give me the manager's name and number. Totally rude, unprofessional little turd. My first visit was on a Saturday afternoon with a few of my friends who have previously rented bikes here. They like it because of the location and affordable price. The store is right on the boardwalk off the shores of Mission Beach. It costs $10 for the whole day versus $8 per hour for the bike rental. I thought $10 was a pretty good deal. However, these bikes are pretty old and beat-up. Most of them are ragged and mine felt like it was going to break at any moment. I didn't even know my bell worked until the end of my ride because it was so rusty. Although the seat was very comfy, the bike was plain ugly. As for the renting process, it was quick and painless. They gave me a waiver and agreement to sign and asked for a form of ID to put on hold, which was my driver's license. Very bummed they didn't accept an alternative (credit/debit cards on hold, for example) because how was I supposed to drink/bar hop if they have my ID?! Also, they didn't offer or provide locks for the bikes if you wanted to park them somewhere. The return process was as fast as the cashier can find your driver's license. Thank the gods my bike didn't break on me. There are way better options in the area for nicer bikes and better rental arrangements. You truly get what you pay for here. read more

We walked in to the store and looked around and no one said anything when we walked in, there was only a couple of people in the store. we were looking for some sweat shirts for Toddlers, which were right by the register. one of the sales persons with long black hair with dark sunglasses walked by us and took a phone call at the front of the store then she walked back by us as we were looking up at the items that we were going to buy and she went back to the register and ignored us. we stood there for about 2 minutes and then walked out and bought the sweat shirts some where else. this was on 12/14/2019 at about 1200 pm. very displeased with this costumer service at this store. read more

We unfortunately just had a bad experience at the T-shirt shop part of Hamels. Make sure you ask the cashier how much your stuff will be, not the nice sales associates who are walking around the store helping customers. I had a group of kids with me who were all using their own money to buy souvenirs. We thought it would be a good lesson for them to know how much money they had and ask how much their item was. When they got to the register it was more then they thought. The response we got when we questioned the discrepancy was it is her first day. The cute girl had just told us she wasn't working yesterday and it was her first day off all week. We thought the whole situation could have been handled very differently. My second time renting bikes here. I should probably just buy a bike but after getting a bike rack, etcetera it just won't be worth it for me compared to my twice yearly rentals from Hamel's. I compared the bike rental prices at Hamel's to a few more shops down the boardwalk/along mission bay drive but the prices at Hamel's are the best. It may take a few minutes for you to be helped because they sell and rent lots of things at Hamel's (boogie boards, wet suits, t shirts, towels, etc) but the sales people are super friendly so it's worth the wait. I enjoy riding along the Mission and PB boardwalks on my beach cruiser and I always ask for the complimentary basket to hold my belongings. All in all a great experience. read more

Horrible service.. We got an umbrella for rent.. When we went back to exchange as one of the metal spikes was out of place (see picture).. They said its in perfect condition. It's 3pm on the day and they said there r no other 7ft umbrellas.. What crap..!! Are they seriously serious..!! We wanted to rent a body board for which they said they want to hold on to the DL..
