I've been seeing optometrists for more than 20 years and I've never encountered someone as wonderful as Dr Hamashige (or Sean, as he introduced himself). Not rushed, he took extra time with me to follow up on some medical concerns with my eyes. He sat and explained why he was doing what he was doing, and the reasons why I needed to be careful about glaucoma in the future (long story that doesn't need to be told here). And my prescription. Dr Hamashige nailed it. I mean, I've had the same prescription for the last eight years and it always felt a little off, but no one could ever quite get it right. As soon as I put my glasses on, I knew I could say goodbye to strained eyes and mild headaches. He made, in his words, "a slight adjustment" and it's literally been life changing. He also just handed me a card with the prescription on it. Other optometrists have been coy with this, demanding I buy glasses from them first. Dr Hamashige didn't care. He honestly just seemed to want to be a good optometrist. They also worked wonders with my insurance. I mean, there's nothing negative I could say about this place. Dr Hamashige is the gold standard. Do not trust this man. He billed my Medicare for a service which was denied which never happened. He claimed that he had to review my record which he did not even have. During his exam, he spoke barely a word and gave zero explanation for anything he did while I was there. For the retina photo consultation, he let me believe that we were looking at a small cataract when this photo is only of the back of the eye (I found out later). He allowed untrained secretaries to operate the testing machines which of course, did not include a word of explanation. (This is not fair to them.) Most of my time there was spent sitting alone in an awful, worn out, empty room. After a brief eye test, he took my old glasses, left the room, then came back, gave them back without one word what he did with them and and why. My entire contact with him couldn't have been more than about four to five minutes total. This happened on November 30, 2018, at the old location off of Old Pecos Trail. But I still have the report from Medicare. This was the worst experience I ever had for an eye exam. read more

Sean Hamashige is the best optometrist I've come across in Santa Fe. Never more than a 5-minute wait for your appointment time, efficient small office with all the focus on you while you are there, expert care, and a tendency to try and save you money rather than upsell. Best of all, Dr. Hamashige is a science nerd with real passion for his job, who seems to relish lengthy discussions of how your eyes or a medicine works. I've been going to Dr. Hamashige since I was a little kid (now almost 30). I've tried a smattering of other eye doctors here and there and Dr. Hamashige is the best! Even when I moved to Albuequerque I still kept him as my primary eye doc. He is very friendly and professional. He has a very soothing and relaxing demeanor and voice. He never does weird things (like dilate your yes) for no reason which other doctors I've come across have done. He takes his time. I moved to Santa Fe 3 months ago, and suddenly needed to see an optometrist, due to an abrupt change (altitude? dryness?) in the correction I needed. I'm a bifocal contacts wearer, and my former optometrist of the last 15 years has managed to keep my extreme nearsightedness corrected to 20/20 while still preserving my close vision to a large extent. I was -very- happy with my former optometrist, and went to see Sean on the basis of the yelp reviews, so I went in with high expectations. I was not disappointed. His staff got me in on a short notice same day basis when I explained that it was sort of an emergency. Because of my correction, I haven't worn glasses in years, so getting my contacts fixed was crucial. They actually had me in the office less than 2 hours after I called. I came out with a single vision correction that fixed the distance vision, and they special ordered new bifocal contacts that came 5 days later. Sean absolutely nailed the prescription. I'm fussy about good vision, and hard to please, but I am absolutely satisfied. I agree that Sean is something of a "science nerd" (so am I) and he spent extra time explaining technical details, which was interesting and gives you confidence in what he is doing. There's a good reasons why when I last logged onto Yelp to check on Dr. Sean, I found nine glowing, 5 star reviews. Dr. Hamashige is far and away the best optometrist I've ever visited. He immediately put me at ease, his ability to quickly understand and diagnose the subtleties of my vision issues were amazing. His patience in addressing every single question I'd had while visually examining the digital photos of my retinas from the Optos machine, which enabled me to be screened for Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma, Cataracts and more - without needing to have my eyes dilated! Dr. Hamashige, who as another Yelp reviewer referenced, introduced himself as Sean, is as unpretentious and pragmatic as he is an expert. I recommend Dr. Hamashige without reservation to anyone who cares about their eyes and their vision. And a shoutout to Tabatha who did my preliminary exams prior to Dr. Hamashige's exams. She was very friendly, informative, helpful she did a great job of making it possible for my eyes to relax enough (my left eye was not cooperating) - to get great quality photos/maps of my retinas on the Optos machine. Very happy to have had her help. Finally I found Accent Vision to be a beautiful, comforting environment with lots of natural wood, creature comforts and friendly staff. I have been going to Dr. Hamashige for years. Let me give you one example of his exceptional care for patients: two years ago, on Father's Day, my husband was out of town. I suddenly had bleeding inside my left eye, making it impossible to see out of it. I was able to reach Dr. Hamashige by phone, and he drove to my house and picked me up, to go back to his office. He spent over an hour examining and testing my eyes. Then, he was able to get me an appointment for the next day with an eye surgeon, who sealed the bleeding with laser surgery. Dr. Hamashige then dropped me back at my house, after I assured him that I had friends in the neighborhood who would help me if I needed it. How wonderful is that? read more

I have complained to optometrists for over 10 years that I was not happy with my latest Rx, I could not see as clearly as I had hoped. Dr. Sean took me back into his office, went through every test again, and a few more. Finally he told me that he could not correct my vision any better. Then he suggested I might have cataracts. I was a bit young for this diagnosis, but he referred me to Eye Associates. I did have cataracts, had surgery. When I went back to Buena Vista Eye Care he corrected by vision and provided my new lenses at no additional cost. read more
