I made a reservation for 5:30 pm last Saturday. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Although the restaurant was still empty, the hostess gave us the worst table in the restaurant.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I nicely asked her to get me a better table, but she denied me the opportunity to sit at the other available tables (for two) that were in the Main room. Because of her lack of goodwill, I decided to tell her to get me the table in the Sushi room, because my reservation was for there. She didn't believe, so I had to show her the screenshot from my cellphone to prove it. I go to this restaurant since 2004 when I first lived in Venice. I know the owner Esther since then. The 3 stars I am giving are not for the food or for the way this wonderful lady runs her business, but I find important that she's aware of how some employees can suddenly turn her business into a bad experience, like the one I had that night.

So things have really evolved here over the last 8 years since my first review. There have been major makeovers and changes, including a hidden patio area outside that can be rented for private functions. The walls are modern and sharp, whilst still paying homage to old Venice with gorgeous photos of yesteryear. The menu has had a few changes as well, some that I don't love (the green devil roll used to be my favorite, but they use such little chili oil now I rarely order it; and they no longer have my favorite wakame salad), but some welcomed new ones (oooo that one ramen bowl!). I now find my self here, if not every week, then every other week. Love it!

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Patio is mostly indoor with an open roof, it's a fun ambiance.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Great place to grab a Japanese beer and some small bites off of their happy hour menu.

Still my favorite local spot. The beauty of this institution and Venice staple is that it is family, friendly, as well as a great place to watch sports and get your party on. Hey, be sure to say hello to Logan the GM. He is always down to accommodate, meet new guest, and hang out with us locals. He has reinvented a few things on the menu and always has a great attitude. If you're lucky, Esther will be there. She is a strong woman who watches over her product. A personal mentor and inspiration for me and a gem of a friend to all. Everyone there is quality. Naoko, Steph and Marg to name a few. Enjoy.

Service was great! We sat at the sushi bar and they were very attentive and super nice. I was looking for a place to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday and this place did not disappoint!! I'm not a sushi fan myself but I even liked the cucumber roll. My boyfriend enjoyed his crunchy crab roll. Highly recommend!

When my friend suggested this restaurant, I didn't even look at the menu because I was like, well,…read moreit's Los Angeles. Even though I have dietary restrictions, I'm pretty sure there's going to be something on the menu that I could eat. Now when I got there and I saw the very brief menu, I was stunned and I was like, oh my gosh, I should've looked at the menu before I came here This looks like I'm about to be eating a bunch of raw fish. But to my surprise when I looked closely, I was able to see that there was a whole section of grilled foods and appetizers that I could eat. I ended up ordering: - the miso soup - the edamame - the cucumber salad (for appetizers) - sea bass - oyster mushrooms - shrimp - the ginkgo nuts Every single food item that I ordered was delicious. I was genuinely surprised by how flavorful everything was and I was particularly impressed with the sea bass and oyster mushrooms. These two dishes were phenomenal. I don't know how they made that sea bass so flaky and moist and just melt in your mouth but it was so good. I don't know what sauce they put on top of it but that thing was amazing. The oyster mushrooms were so good that we ordered two more orders of it. For the edamame, the only thing I didn't like was that it was served cold. I don't know if that's like a traditional way of serving it or something but I'm used to having my edamame be served warm or hot so that was unusual for me. The server was amazing, super attentive and very kind. He always made sure we had what we needed and there was even something that was mistakenly served to us but he took it off the bill and allowed my friend to eat it anyway so we were grateful for him. He was also really good at explaining the menu and the dishes that he liked. The vibe in here is social but a little classy. There were these ladies that were sitting to the left of us and one of them just randomly started talking to us and asking us if we were from the neighborhood, which was a little odd because... why are you asking me those questions??? Other than that the vibe was fine and I would definitely come back here again. One thing to note though is that the food is served kind of like tapas style so if you're expecting massive portions and to be stuffed to discomfort, this is not the place where that's going to happen.

The Santa Monica one is more grab and go as it's their smaller flagship location. This business has been carried by the owner Keiko who has brought a slice of Japan outside of the designated communities of West LA's Sawtelle and DTLA's Japan Town! Here (at either location) you will find unique delicious flavors of omusubi but also called onigiri rice balls! That you won't find anywhere else! Rice balls are actually shaped into triangles and stuffed or mixed with simple ingredients like a salted plum called ume (it tastes salty, and tangy with a touch of sweetness) To more engaging offerings like the lucky cat with japanese pickles with fresh wasabi, ginger, and bonito(dried fish that is sliced paper thin) These finger foods can be enjoyed as a snack or grab a few to make a meal. The Culver City Location has a decor that immerses you in Japan. They have a small market section with alcohol such as saki, handmade dishware from Japan, cute claw machines for kids, and expanded meal offerings! Besides Keiko being absolutely amazing, the food is as well! From curry stuffed to fresh shisho leaves and pickled wasabi!!! There's lots to choose from and the best part.,,.they have always had an expansive vegan menu! Yes they are very Vegan Friendly! I love the Eggplant Chili Miso and Wasabi Tsukudani. I highly suggest checking out the Culver City location so you can sit down and enjoy a drink and the ambiance and expanded offerings. After going to this place for nearly 16 years there are rare days where things like the rice may be off due to a mistake, but I've only experienced that a total of 2 times in 16 years so it's pretty rare!

My friend eats here a lot so I wanted to try it out myself…read more I placed a togo order online for a miso beef and sunny blue curry omusubi. The order took awhile (about 30 mins) but there is an online tracker and it's quite accurate. Both omusubis were made fresh. The rice was kinda falling apart. It could definitely use more protein. The curry one is sooooo good but needs a little more salt. The beef was good too, it reminded me of Yoshinoya. It was about $6 for one. They have a combo plate but I didn't need the sides.

I love that she overestimated the time, it was only 6 minutes for us to get seated! (Moral of the story- always put your name down bc it can go much faster than you think!) The food was delicious! We had tuna hand rolls as a starter, shishito peppers, cod with zucchini, and the wagyu skewers plus cocktails. Everything was incredibly mind blowing but the cod stole the show! We checked in three times before finally getting seated at the bar, 15 minutes past our reservation time. Meanwhile, two walk-in parties were seated before us, one at a table and one at the bar. On our third check-in, I kindly asked the host, "Hi, just checking in on our reservation for 9pm," so she'd understand we were now 15 minutes late being seated. Only after that did she direct the hostess to seat us at the bar, a spot typically reserved for walk-ins, and one that had open seats well before we were sat. Keep in mind, we arrived at the same time as those walk-ins. Still, we were grateful to be seated. Service at the bar was fine. Two women helped us: one was the bartender/waitress, who was kind whenever she had a free moment. The other, who I assumed was the manager based on how she interacted with the other guests and staff. Who I assume was the manager seemed to have witnessed how late we were seated, or our exchange with the host, because she was noticeably cold and standoffish toward us the entire time despite my husband and I being polite and smiling through what was already a rocky start to the night. The entire situation made us feel so horrible and icky we walked away feeling like... was that real? Would not go back. I miss when this place was MTN, before ego became such a big part of the service.

From the moment we sat down, everything was just perfect. The sushi was absolutely outstanding -- fresh, beautifully presented, and full of flavor. The sauces were on another level, perfectly complementing every single bite. Everything we ordered was delicious, and you can tell real care goes into every dish coming out of that kitchen. The ambiance was really lovely too -- warm, comfortable, and inviting. The kind of place where you just settle in and feel good being there. It made the whole evening that much more enjoyable for the whole family. Now here's what made this visit truly special -- there was a robot server delivering sushi right to the table! My 2-year-old was completely glued to it -- wide eyes, the biggest smile, entertained the entire meal. As any parent knows, keeping a toddler happy at a restaurant is half the battle, and Mikomi made that effortless and fun. The human staff were also incredibly warm and attentive, making us feel genuinely welcomed the whole time. If you want top-tier sushi and a dining experience that's fun for the whole family, Mikomi Sushi is an absolute must. We will definitely be back! P.S. -- My wife loved it so much that she visited twice on her own while I was at work. I think that says everything you need to know.
