My wife and I were in search of a place to get a custom suit for our wedding this October. After searching online, we are so thankful we chose Hall Madden--working with Mathea was THE BEST and the final outcome was everything we had hoped for. This was our first time doing a custom suit and we, honestly, had no idea how many fine details go into the final look. Thankfully, Mathea has years of experience and her expertise really shines through with helping you create the final product. Who knew there were so many shades and textures of navy?! We were overwhelmed with the amount of fabric choices to choose from and relied and trusted her option to guide us in creating the perfect vision for our wedding day look. We went into the studio a total of three times. During our initial visit we talked details, fabric choices, liner options, and took numerous measurements. We also nailed down the timeline and what to expect since we were in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic. During the second appointment, you try on a test suit that has been specifically made for your body based on your initial fitting and measurements. This is where Mathea really shined with making minor adjustments, ones we would have never even noticed, to obtain the absolute best look and fit in the end. She was also wonderful with helping us select the best pocket square and shirt to compliment the suit and fabric we selected. On our third and final appointment we were able to try on the final suit and it was PERFECTION! No additional adjustments or alterations required. Mathea was super sweet and gifted us with the test suit due to a delay we encountered for our second fitting because of Covid. So, we basically ended up with two custom suits that she'll be able to wear for years to come. We love all the custom details--the lapel, 3 button sleeve and her name stitched inside. Now that she's been properly fitted, we realize just how badly all her other 'off the rack' blazers look. Those will be donated and we'll be working with Mathea and Hall Madden for future Bespoke clothing. Another notable mention, all the measurements are saved for future needs! LADIES!! Need a quality suit? Look no further. Bottom Line: If you're willing to pay a little more, this place will not disappoint. I was in search of a business suit for upcoming court trials, and needed everything to look sharp. I've always shopped off the rack (typically from Banana Republic) but I'm shorter and have played sports all my life so the shirts and pants were often a bit long, or tight in some areas while loose in others. Tailoring helps, but only so much, and you're limited to the styles and colors in the store. I'm not a clothes person, but being able to pick out small details (with professional assistance) was actually pretty fun. Nerd/OCD friend alert: they even have this tool that measures the slope of your shoulders so your shirts sit/fall correctly. The slope of your shoulders, like what?! Like I said before, I'm not a clothes or design person at all, and Mathea helped guide me in the right direction with her expert eye and advice. And holy hell, this new suit is so comfortable, I feel like I could wear it all day (even in hot weather) and be comfortable while looking amazing. I mean, there is this soft smooth liner (apparently Japanese cotton) on the inside of the pants, and all I want to do is wiggle my legs around to feel the silkiness. I probably look like I have ants in my pants, but oh well. The shirt is light yet crisp. For the first time in my life, while wearing a dress jacket, I can bring both my arms together in front of me without it being too tight in the front of my shoulders while the sleeves are still too long. . Everything JUST FITS RIGHT. It's a beautiful thing. I had the worst experience I've ever had with a business here. Mathea not only failed to provide me with custom suit I was fitted for, repeatedly lied to my face, wasted hours of my time, and left me with no suit 3 days before a wedding I was a part of. I would not recommend this business to anyone. Seeing as Mathea came highly recommended from Hall Madden S.F., I can only conclude that she judged me based on appearance of being a queer woman of color, and thought she could get over on me. full story... 1st appt - measured, picked fabrics and details, paid in full. Mathea told me a 7 week turnaround time was no problem. Nothing spectacular, nothing wrong. I did notice that Mathea seemed hurried, or distracted, not really listening to me and brushing off my questions. I thought she either had mimosas all morning, or was coked up! I called Mathea 10 days out from the wedding, she told me the suit was ready and we scheduled a second fitting. Mathea called 1hr before the second appointment asking to reschedule, stating she was not feeling well. I was a little apprehensive because this pushed my pick-up date to 4 days before the wedding, however Mathea assured me that I might not even need any last minute alterations; and if I did it would be a quick 48 turnaround. I agreed and rescheduled. Mathea showed up late to second fitting, and everything that happened next was unprofessional, baffling, and downright insulting. Mathea instructed me to put on a wrinkled pair of pants that were laying on a stool, and a mis-matched black jacket hanging on the mirror; the began measuring me again. I was SO confused. Why was this suit not pressed and in a garment bag? Why was it black and not navy blue as ordered? Why was it 3 sizes too big? Where was the colored jacket liner ? Stitched initials? Belt loops? Pocket square? Literally nothing was correct. I specifically asked Mathea, "Is this my suit?", and she answered "yes". I was still SO confused. Why are you measuring me all over again like its the 1st appt. That is when I realized that Mathea was blatantly lying to my face, and trying to gaslight me. This was clearly not my suit, but a showroom template; and she was starting from scratch. I asked Mathea again more directly, "Are you sure this is the suit I ordered because it feels like a template and nothing about it is correct ''. Mathea looked me directly in my eyes and doubled down on the lie, not only telling me it was my suit, but also stating that it "just needed to be taken in a little bit" and the tailor had been "messing up on the womens template". I'm sorry but "custom" suits don't come back 3 sizes too big, wrong color, wrong fabric, wrong details, with no customization. Here is where I felt insulted. What judgements was she making about me to think I was dumb enough to believe what she was saying. Mathea was given every opportunity to come clean, yet she chose to stick to lying and repeating catch phrases such as "client satisfaction", "making it right", "complimentary shirts", etc. The fitting ended with Mathea telling me that she would either FEDEX me my suit the next day or drive it to me personally. I was so baffled, insulted, and frustrated, I just said okay and left. After processing what just happened on my hour drive home, I realized that no WAY could I trust Mathea to make good on her word when she had no problem repeatedly lying to me. And, it was impossible for her to produce what I ordered in 24hrs. I sent her a text message telling her I was very disappointed in the service, that I believed she was being dis-honest, and I did not trust she was going to do anything she said she was to correct the situation. She responded via text stating she could make the black template suit work. FINALLY, she admitted she was lying. However, in what world would I want a black suit, when I'm in the wedding party and the color is Navy blue!!! And to try and give me a used template in place if a brand new custom suit. I told her I just wanted a refund at this point. She of course immediately called me and continued with her nonsense. She did not apologize for lying, or even acknowledge that she had. She did not even address what actually happened to the original suit. I told her to just stop and issue a refund. Not trusting this would happen, I looked up her boss's info and called him directly myself to let him know what happened, before she could call and lie to him!! He needed to know the egregious behavior and how Hall Madden was being represented. I will say he was absolutely wonderful in his response to the situation. All of this was just so unnecessary. Whether Mathea forgot to submit the order, it got lost, or whatever happened, all she had to do was be honest and transparent. Mistakes are bound to happen in every industry, it's how you handle them that matters most. Lying to the client, gaslighting them, and insulting their intelligence is not the way!! read more

I feel very lucky to have found Mathea and Hall Madden. She outfit me, my wedding party, and my family for my wedding. She provided each of us with a suit that we loved and was easily the best suit we have ever worn. Mathea was not only our custom tailor, she was the stylist for the men at the wedding. She gave me tips on shoes, ties, socks and even found the best colors for my groomsmen and my best women to have a stuinning wedding party. The whole process took about 2 months, and Mathea was very communicative throughout the whole process and answered all my questions. Literally, never go here. TLDR they GREATLY messed up my husband's tux's for our wedding, and then have never returned our call about it. It has been 5 months of us calling, emailing, and no response. My husband spent thousands of dollars at Hall Madden on 2 tux jackets for our wedding. When he finally recieved the jacket back, the week of us leaving for the wedding (which was a whole stressor in and of itself), the custom tux did not fit my husband. It wasn't even too big and needed to be taken in, the sleeves were too short and the suit was too small. The representative at Hall Madden told my husband to take it to a tailor and it would $5 in alteration charges. First of all, it is insane that when getting a custom suit made, that he had to take it to a tailor at all, but whatever. He trusted the representative and took it to his tried and true tailor in San Francisco. He had worked with this woman for years so has a good relationship with her. When he took the suits to her, she was alarmed on how much he spent and how messed up the suit was. It cost him nearly ~$300 on top of what he paid from Hall Madden, and she was helping us in a pinch before our wedding as we were leaving in days. This is completely unacceptable. We have contacted Hall Madden several times, literally ONLY asking for the amount we had to pay in extra alterations to be reimbursed, never mind some time of reimbursement for thousands of dollars in tux with sleeves that will forever have the buttons messed up on them, and to no response. They just don't care at all. If they would have simply returned our numerous messages, and made good on an honest mistake, for suits for our wedding, I never would have felt the need to write something like this. Now, I feel like I need to steer everyone clear of Hall Madden because of how much they truly don't care about one of the biggest days of our life and how much stress and additional cost we incurred because of it. You would be making an extremely expensive mistake to take a risk with these people who don't actually care about your experience at all. read more

I'm really disappointed that this place didn't work out. And because I put so much emphasis on their reviews and reputation (all of their stores on Yelp and even Google are at a perfect 5 stars), I felt the need to write about my experience. I was so excited to get a custom made suit for my wedding and even more excited that I lived close to such a reputable company. I had already been to some other stores and knew exactly what I wanted, I just wanted to commit to a place I could trust and that could give me the perfect fit. Their website said I needed to start with a 1 hour fitting appointment since they are by appointment only. At hallmadden.com/faq they mention the "3 appointment process" which includes 3 fittings: one for sizing, one for test fitting, and a final fit. I was so excited that I showed up to the appointment wearing fancy shoes, business pants, and a button up (I was told that it helps). My main goal was to see fabrics, understand the design process, assess how comfortable I was with everything, and place an order by the next day. After days of excitement I walked in only to be greeted by a rep that did not seem interested in helping me at all. She had mentioned via email that she was having some personal troubles a few days before so I figured it just wasn't her week. But I didn't expect her to make me feel so uncomfortable and unwelcome. I started by trying to share the details of the suit I had envisioned, but she kept cutting me off to tell me about her credentials and that Hall Madden was "all about the fit." I wasn't sure if that meant I had to be flexible about the style but she didn't really clarify. Eventually I asked if I could just start by seeing some colors, so finally she grabbed a few books and asked me what I was thinking of. I told her that I found a fabric I loved made by a company that they carried and before I could finish she became very negative and began heavily down-talking my choice. I guess the brand isn't very high-end, which I didn't know. I told her that I wasn't focused on the brand when I was looking, that my focus was on finding the perfect color, but by the time I left I felt like that was the moment she began treating me very dismissively. She showed me what I asked for as well as some other options at a comparable price point, and when I asked if she had other suggestions she kind of shrugged and implied that they would only be in more premium fabrics. She scoffed at some of my inspo photos, especially my choice of buttons, which was very rude. Usually i love the honesty but not when it's done so negatively. I was a little uneasy at that point so I asked about logistics. She kept saying ambiguous things, that she maybe could or couldn't get my suit done in time and that the fabric mills in Italy are closed for now (this was after she already told me via email that having the suit before my wear date was no problem). Eventually I clarified that my goal for the day was to understand the Hall Madden process, design, and fabric options, make a decision, and place an order within a day or two. Her attitude immediately changed and she basically became unwilling to help me unless I was fully committed to ordering the suit during that appointment. I understand if she didn't want to start taking my measurements just yet but at this point she was clearly trying to either let me leave or buy a suit. She began talking about the fabric mills again which made me unsure about her timeline. She looked at her calendar and eventually told me that she would contact her regional manager to get a more solid confirmation. I asked about the 3 appointment process since I knew we would need time for that, and she very abruptly turned and said "There is no 3 appointments. Just one. We only do that for premium suits." Probably the most heartbreaking moment for me since this was what got me the most excited about this place. Feeling discouraged but still with slight hopes that things might work out, I asked if I could stick around and look at buttons since I still had 45 minutes left on my appointment. She took a big deep sigh, shook her head, and said "I mean.......... sure." She then sat down at her computer, turned away from me, and left me alone with the books for a few minutes until I eventually said goodbye. She did get back to me about the timeline but at that point I had decided to go with another company who made me feel much more welcome and secure. For those who may show up to Hall Madden like I did, excited and confident in a place with such a strong name, be weary. We had our first experience with Hall Madden in 2016 in the San Francisco location for a suit, and now we are back for our made to measure tuxedo for our upcoming nuptials in Paris! We were so fortunate that this location literally opened right when we needed our tuxedo to be completed within the necessary time frame. Mathea is the hands down so knowledgeable & the sweetest, she helped guide us through this entire process. Mathea has provided so many flattering recommendations for my fiancée's body shape and we could not be more pleased with every suggestion. We were allowed to pick the color of tuxedo fabric, lapel style, liner, piping, vents, etc. The process starts off with an initial appointment, where you are measured and fitted into the items. During the second appointment, you try on a test suit where there are can be final adjustments made before the final tuxedo is made. There will be less alterations needed at the last stage, providing you with the best fitted item. Mathea also helped us find a bow tie that will match the satin detailing, cuff links, cummerbund, and black cap toe shoes. Spring 2021, weddings are a thing again and I need a new suit, the last one I bought can now legally drive, it was time for a change! Mathea fitted me and my groomsmen back in January; her fashion and fitting knowledge is extraordinary. The experience was amazing and personal. The fitting is so much more detailed compared to ordinary department stores. When I purchased my suits in the past, they only measured chest & shoulder/arm length for the jacket, and waist & inseam for pants. Mathea first had us try on pre-fitted suits. She took notes on areas that were either too tight or too loose to be adjusted for the final product. As for me, she noticed my thighs and seat were too tight for my waist line (an issue I've often encountered buying pants/jeans). My jacket was snug around the bicep/deltoid area, and the shoulders had a few wrinkles. She then brought out a tool to measure the angle drop of my shoulder; something l've never seen before. We found out the drop on my shoulders were uneven. Mathea explained its common for people to have unsymmetrical bodies. This experience made me happy because now I'll have a suit that's 100% tailored for melt body. *Note* I only posted pictures from the fitting because the wedding was postponed due to the Coronavirus pandemic. This is my go to store for clothes! I've bought several casual shirts, a couple pair of jeans, a pair of chinos, a couple of overcoats and they are all my favorite to wear! Some of the shirts are flannels and they are the softest shirts I have. Would definitely recommend grabbing a few for the fall/winter season. Another reason I would recommend shopping here is the stylist at this location, Mathea. She is a true professional and can help elevate anyone's wardrobe. She has gone the extra mile for me and my girlfriend several times. I had an amazing experience making a custom suit for my wedding with Mathea and Hall Madden. Off the rack suits never fit my body so I decided to go with Hall Madden and could not be happier. Mathea made the process so easy- she was extremely knowledgeable and made the whole process so simple. What can I say about my experience at Hall Madden with Mathea. For starters, if you are looking for an impeccable customer service experience with a tailor who is very detail oriented, Mathea is your girl. My husband wanted a very specific suit for our wedding. He is from England and likes a more European fitted look, which is surprisingly difficult to find. Shop after shop we were given few options and unenthused customer service. Then we went to Hall Madden and our dreams came true with Mathea. My husband got the suit of his dreams in the end. Our wedding was to initially take place April 2020 in England, but the Covid happened. For a few months it seemed like the wedding might still go on, and during that time, Mathea was our cheerleader and did everything she could to make sure my husband's suit was delivered and fitted by the date. In the end our wedding was postponed a year, but we look forward to our final fitting with Mathea. Oh! I also want to mention that not only is Mathea a fantastic tailor, but she helped style ever piece of my husbands outfit for the day. I reached out in early September to get a custom suit for my wedding last week, and she did a wonderful job working with my fiance and I to make sure we got exactly what we wanted and needed. The quality of the suit was flawless, as expected. The fit was just perfect, and I'm not an easy fit (wide but sloped shoulders, big butt) so that's saying something. Mathea did an incredible job helping me nail down my bespoke suit for my wedding. Everything from the color itself, intricate detail of the design, buttons, pant length, type of shoes, tie, pocket square and more. I did have a vision of what I wanted going into this and Mathea took it to the next level. Her communication is lighting fast and is really on top of everything she does and has an incredible memory of every one of our conversations. Even through COVID she made this a seamless experience. Hall Madden does a test fitting before they make the actual suit which gives time for correction of measurements and another chance to make adjustments which really reduced the pressure of getting everything I wanted right the first time around.
