Picture this: it's 6 weeks before you're wedding, and you feel pretty prepared. Venue, check. Food, check. Booze, check. Suit, check....or so you thought. Your fiancé tells you out of nowhere, "I don't really like the color of the suit you're getting anymore." Confidence in your look for the big day? Shattered, and you are left scrambling in the rubble trying to find anything to fit the new vision in your significant other's mind. No off-the-rack place seems to have the look, and you turn to custom suiting as a last ditch effort. A "Best custom suits in Chicago" Google search provides you with options, with one consistent name on the myriad of lists you see, Hall Madden. You send an email, half expecting to be turned down, seeing as a custom suit in a 6 week time frame is monumental, but to your delight, there is light at the end of the tunnel, as a friendly Kiyoshi replies, "we can do it." Ecstatic because of the too-good-to-be-true news, you can't help but wonder, what's the catch? It's probably going to be very expensive, especially given my situation. Let me just say, this was not the case at all, and Kiyoshi was as friendly, professional, and honest in person as he was in that email. From the first conversation, Kiyoshi was ready to get things rolling, and asked me questions about the look I was trying to achieve. He not only offered me my options and provided insight on each, but also provided me with helpful advice and knowledge on questions I had about the process and the suit/tuxedo (ended up going with a tux). After this first meeting, I decided to go all in on Hall Madden, and he got to work. The fitting was first, and Kiyoshi demonstrated his expertise right off the bat by not only showing me the different places that he was going to have altered to fit my physique, but also explained why off-the-rack suits fit me the way they did. I even learned that I naturally have my right shoulder lower than my left due to me being right-handed, which I never knew! Aftet the fitting, I got a chance to pick out everything about my tux, from the outer color and inner lining color (obviously, since my fiancé needed to put her stamp of approval), to the lapels, to the color of the jetted pockets (I even chose to have it monogrammed to boot). Feeling once again confident, I waited anxiously for the suit to come in, and in 4 weeks it did. For the final fitting, some small alterations were still needed, but got done quickly and in time for the wedding. The end result was stunning. The final Burgundy tuxedo with black satin lapels was one worthy of being next to my beautiful wife's ivory A-line wedding dress with lace details. I walked down the aisle with her, arm in arm and my head held high, as I knew I looked damn good. Of course, the compliments came as is probably customary to do on someone's wedding day, but something tells me these were genuine. To sum, my wedding day would not have been as special had Hall Madden not been a part of it. They brought a vision to life, and made me feel like I was the sharpest dressed guy in the room, which I totally was. Thank you Kiyoshi for giving me my groove back! read more

My experience with Hall Madden was nothing short of excellent. I was in the market for a custom tux for my wedding and came across Hall Madden on Reddit. They had great reviews so I decided to give them a try over other providers like Suitsupply (which I have used before, wasn't a bad experience but definitely wasn't anything that would make me need to go back there). Kiyoshi is the tailor at Hall Madden and he does a tremendous job. He is located in an office in the loop right on Michigan Avenue that is very easy to get to (and has an amazing view of the lake). You schedule your appointment with Hall Madden online and Kiyoshi responds to confirm. I had several appointments with Kiyoshi, starting with the initial consultation to see if Hall Madden would be a good fit for what I'm looking for. Kiyoshi asked me what I had in mind and didn't push or pressure me into anything and was happy to provide his vast amount of knowledge wherever I needed some advice. After deciding on a custom tux at the initial meeting, the next visit was to get sized and pick out all of the smaller details like interior lining on the vest and inside pocket fabric for the jacket. Then the most amazing part about Hall Madden is that they send a custom test suit to see how everything looks before they make the actual suit. This was very helpful in my case as a few items needed adjusting and Kiyoshi was very attentive and detailed oriented while marking down these adjustments. On the final visit, my tux was ready and my bride to be and I were over the moon about it. It was ready well in advance of the big day, and that definitely helped ease our minds on that front. From start to finish, Kiyoshi was amazing to work with and I would highly recommend him to anyone in the market for a custom suit or tux. read more

I wanted to get a new suit and shirts for upcoming interviews and found these guys were close by and decided to give them a try.  I've had suits in the past but this was my first time getting something custom made and I wasn't sure what to expect. I had to book an appointment thru their website and put down a deposit. Most tailors I'd used for alterations in the past were old and grumpy and I hated dealing with pushy salespeople in department stores, so I wasn't sure what it'd be like going in to have a suit made.  First off, the studio space they have isn't like a normal shop. It's an intimate office in a suite with three open air balconies overlooking the city. The view is unbelievable.  The fitting though was a breeze. I met with Kiyoshi who started by doing measurements and putting me in example suits to get the size right. He mentioned all sorts of things I'd never considered before when buying a suit, like my shoulder slope and how high the front button is on the jacket.  Then we went over fabrics, which was a bit overwhelming but he told me his recommendations for what fabric would work in an office setting and for my complexion without being too boring or obnoxious. I ended up picking a grey suit with some texture in it. You also get to pick things like your buttons and liner and monogram.  The whole process took about an hour. The hardest part was honestly waiting 6 weeks until the suit arrived. I thought it looked great and better than what I'd worn before, but Kiyoshi insisted on making a few tweaks to the pants, which they did for free.  Overall, it was a relaxing experience and I've already recommended them to a few friends. Very professional and easy going. I'm already thinking about suit #2! read more

Job interviews are coming up for me next year and I haven't bought a suit since high school. I know I can't show up in that Men's Warehouse suit (pleated pants? wut?!) so I went suit shopping. Turns out, I'm pretty tough to fit. I wanted a slimmer fit, but kept getting told my body was difficult to fit. A salesman at another department store which shall not be shamed here suggested I get a custom suit ... starting at $2500!!! Good thing I searched around and found Hall Madden. Kiyoshi put my mind at ease and knew exactly what to do for my suit. Ended up getting a suit at less than half of the price other store and didn't feel pressured at all. When the suit arrived, it needed a few tweaks, which they altered in a week. I never knew there was so much to custom suits, but they made it simple. He even showed me how to wear a pocket square. Give them a shot, they make it easy. read more

Been coming to Hall Madden for some time now. Dealing with Kiyoshi is a nice blend of tastefull knowledge with recomendations that keep the individual in mind. (I know this as I have sent several friends to him, and we have very different taste!) It's a custom fit at a variety of pricepoints. Quality throughout. Very excited to do a custom winter jacket this year. Why buy that off the shelf when you can have the perfect fit? Appointment only, this office is in an extremely cool penthouse with a view. Quality takes time so dont call for a suit needed by next week. If you're not sure about trends or cut, just ask Kiyoshi, he's the man. read more

I actually found Hall Madden by accident after going to a different tailor to get a suit but they were closed. I worked with Kiyoshi to develop a suit style that was nice but fresh. Kiyoshi seemed really knowledgeable gave me many style tips. Overall it was a good experience, and I would recommend Hall Madden to others. Vu read more

My groomsmen and I recently purchased custom suits from Proper Suit, and the entire experience was amazing! Kiyoshi and McGregor were exceptional throughout the entire process. Kiyoshi was very accommodating and flexible. He met with some of my groomsmen in Chicago and later in Boston. This was my first time getting a custom suit and I certainly plan on returning to Proper Suit for more in the future. Kiyoshi is knowledgeable and meticulous, and made the entire process fun. Everyone loved their suits, and had a great time getting fitted. Kiyoshi and the staff made the process super easy, and I couldn't have asked for a better experience! What you get: Italian-milled wool, impeccable contemporary-yet-classic fit and tailoring advice, and the best customer service in the business. What you don't get: the obscene price tags found in Barney's, Bergdoff Goodman or any other overpriced store that prevents 28 year olds like myself for looking my best when I'm at my best. The value they provide is so good that I already have a tux, 2 suits (one a 3-piece) and a blazer in my closet from them and the only reason I don't have more is because my closet space is eclipsing my wife's. Richard is the co-founder, owner, and now, my tailor. From my first fitting to my last, it's always about making me look my best without any of the fussiness found elsewhere in the industry. The options are endless (from great quality $700 made-to-measure, full canvas suits to top-quality Zegna fabric at half the price) and the best part is these guys know the line between being too trendy (you won't find skinny suits here) but keeping classic style relevant (the cut of their 2-button, double vent suit makes you feel like Bond). I could go on and on about these guys but I think I'll just buy another suit instead. Keep up the good work, boys. (Btw, that's my ProperSuit tux in my photo.) read more

Having previously been in the industry, I had reserved my expectations for the experience with Proper Suit but wanted to give it a try. I have broad shoulder with a slender build and pretty long arms... so finding a suit off the rack is tough (I usually just deferred to H. Boss and then have it tailored) The space is comfortable and the fitting schedule is flexible. I was pleased to find the owner, Richard, more focused on finding what worked for me in place of just selling a suit. The initial consult went well and appeared very detailed - fit, form, function, fabric, lapels, buttons, lining, the works. Tentative to jump in, I started with one suit to see how things went. 4 weeks later, happy to share the suit came in spot on. I have since referred several close friends (who have all bought suits) as well as gifted a suit to my brother. Proper Suit also keeps your measurements on file so updating your wardrobe in the future is a breeze. Overall, very pleased with the entire experience. read more

I came to Proper Suit after being very unhappy with the way that suits off the rack fit my body. I'm 6'4" and have very broad shoulders and a slender build so finding a suit jacket that fit me right was almost impossible, until I met with Richard Hall. As an attorney who has to wear a suit almost everyday during the work week, I have found that all three of the suits (Yes, 3 suits, they are that amazing folks) that I've bought from Proper Suit are very comfortable, fit perfectly and very reliable. Below recounts my first fitting & experience with Proper Suit: After an hour fitting and picking out every exact detail of my new suit, I finally decided that a custom suit was right for me. If you are looking for an amazing suit with exceptional personalized service, look no further than Proper Suit for two main reasons: 1) The Suit. I've never been given so many options for a jacket & trousers. It was exciting to be able to choose everything from the fabric, piping, to the interior lining, to even the type and kind of buttons you wanted on the jacket. Once I got my first suit, it fit perfectly and I couldn't have been more happy. 2) The Service. I was deterred in the past from getting a personalized suit in the past due to the cost. However, because of the technology and skill of the men behind Proper Suit, I was able to afford a made to measure suit at a very affordable and reasonable price. read more

What an amazing experience! After so many years, I had almost given up on having a suit that really fit. It didn't seem to matter how much I spent. The tailors at the department stores did their best, but it never came out right. I am just one of those hard to fit guys. That all changed with Kiyoshi and Hall Madden. His suggestions were on target. He made this a comfortable, enjoyable experience. He know exactly, down to the millimeter, the alterations that were needed. Wish I had known about Hall-Madden sooner. read more

I am lucky enough to have a great experience in customizing suits at Hall Madden. As it is my first time, Kiyoshi gave a lot of helpful advice on fabrics, styles, and accessories. My experience with Kiyoshi has been nothing short of exceptional. I recently moved from LA and began looking for a local tailor - I couldn't be any more impressed as The process at Hall Madden is 5 star. Kiyoshi is a perfectionist and pays attention to every detail of the fitting process. Highly recommend Kiyoshi to anyone looking for perfectly fitted menswear. read more

There's no comparison, this is the best place in Chicago. Having been to a fair number of suit shops over the years, Kiyoshi is a breath of fresh air, professionalism, and knowledge. I couldn't be happier with the suit I've purchased. The fit and style is modern and looks amazing. I'm also pleased with the moderate pricing, nearly half of some of the other competitors in the city. Five stars! Thanks Kiyoshi! read more

As a professional photographer, I'm constantly going to weddings and needed a new suit that looked professional and modern. After searching around, I decided to try Hall Madden and I'm really glad I chose them. The fitter, Kiyoshi, recognized that my body wasn't easy to fit for off-the-rack suits because of my large chest and narrow waist. Fortunately, he knew how to make a suit that would fit me, be comfortable and still look slim and modern. The process took about an hour and we went over the fit, fabrics and design. After about 6 weeks the suit arrived and only needed a few small adjustments to get the pants right. I've been wearing it constantly to shoots and out as well and always get compliments from people who typically see me in my T-shirt and jeans uniform. read more

I needed custom dress shirts for work and kept wondering how other coworkers had shirts that didn't look like bags and actually fit their body. I looked into getting tailor fitted shirts and Hall Madden had great reviews. I only got one at first, but really liked the end result and bought enough to cover me for two weeks at work. They even make you a free sample shirt first to make sure the fit is perfect. Can't recommend them enough and now it doesn't look like I'm wearing hand-me-downs. read more

Everything you'd need and want from a suit. I bought my first custom suits from Kiyoshi and have been going back every since. Great materiel, look & fit at reasonable prices. I'm not great at picking out styles on my own, but Kiyoshi does an awesome job of walking you through each choice and offering recommendations (if you'd like them). I am in the process of building out my professional wardrobe with Propersuit. They have made three suits for me, and I've been very pleased with each of them. Each one is at the most modest fabric price tier. Even at that price tier, Propersuit offers a wide array of fabric options. At each fabric level, Propersuit offers a great deal. Purchasing a similarly constructed suit at nearly any other Chicago custom suit shop will cost significantly more. I've looked into it. Regardless of my fabric and style choices, the made-to-measure fit is always spot on and as a result, because the right fit is so important, I typically get complements on my suits. I've worked with both Kiyoshi and Richard and have been continuously impressed with their passion for the business and knowledge of the craft. I'm looking forward to my next purchase! read more

Like many others I suffered from crappy suits from JC Penny for most of my life and finally realized it was time to upgrade to a custom made suit. I got my Hall Madden about 3-4 years ago and everything about it was worth it. The fitting was easy and professional and I was walked through all the options and offered tons of great advice. The suit arrived promptly and fit like a charm. 3-4 years later and the suit has held up to countless uses and still looks brand new and I get compliments every single time I wear it. I can't wait to get another one! read more

I hate to just pile on the praise, but I could literally not be happier with my experience at Proper Suit. I have suits from other custom clothiers as well as high-end off the rack suppliers. I can say with certainty that none of them fit as well or come with the level of customer service as my new Proper Suit does. In addition, the price is extremely fair for a custom suit of any kind, let alone one of this quality. Richard and Kiyoshi have an excellent grasp on how a modern suit should look and feel, particularly when it comes to fit. I went in for a fitting 7 weeks before my wedding. 4.5 weeks later, I received my suit ahead of schedule and with absolutely no alterations needed (understand that this is rare, but it speaks to the time and attention that Richard put until taking my measurements). Again, I could not be happier. I will be going back next time I need a new suit or overcoat. read more

Repeat customer here. Purchased a suit for my wedding and later an additional blazer and suit and couldn't be happier. Working with Kiyoshi has always been a pleasure. Setting up appointments is super easy and Kiyoshi is great at picking up on your style immeaditly. I'm basically shaped like a triangle so off the rack suits never looked great. Getting something made to measure made a huge difference and I don't think I could ever go back. Deliverables have always been on time and any slight alterations are taken of care of quickly. Hall Madden is an amazing shop with hands down a high quality product. I couldn't recommend this place more. read more

What can I say? These guys are the best. Over the last few years, I've had a suit and a tux made by them. Both times, they nailed the fit and details off the bat. The process was so easy too. I happen to be someone who is pretty particular about his clothes and knew exactly what I wanted when I walked in, but I'd imagine the experience would be equally easy for a novice. The guys there really know their stuff and make it fun. Recently, I added a few lbs as we all do from time to time and I needed some alterations on both pieces. I brought them in, was quickly marked and measured, and sent on my way. Not log after I got a call and my pieces were ready. They nailed the alterations. I couldn't be happier. read more

I was trying to find a MTM store in Chicago, so I bought two suites with two different vendors. Vendor 1 charged me $1K more than Proper Suit. The sales approach at Vendor 1 was a bit more sales oriented versus consultation. I got my suit in 6 weeks. The sports coat is nice but the pants come up on my waist way too high for my liking. I have worn the sports coat with the slacks three times in six months and wish I never bought it. Proper Suit was different. I ordered a suit and it took forever. When it came it needed some alterations and then everything went wrong. The pants came back way too tight. BUT Richard did jump on it. He scrapped the first suit and ordered a new one. It seems to have taken forever (I first ordered in January and received the final suit in August) but when it arrived it wore beautifully on my body. I have re-ordered a sports coast and several trousers with Proper Suit. Given their price point and willingness to stick with it until everything is to my liking, I have to give them high marks. read more

Have been to a number of MTM suiting places both in NYC and Chicago and Proper Suit is in my opinion far and away the best - both in terms of quality and service. Just finished ordering my fourth suit/blazer there and plan on continuing to go to them in the future. Their responsiveness and commitment to service are terrific - very patient and excellent attention to the details of fitting (in particular I've worked Kiyoshi in Chicago the last few times, and he is terrific). If something's not right, they'll fix it. In addition to the fit, the fabric quality on all of the items I've ordered seems to me to be excellent for the price point. All in all, it's exactly what you want when going to a MTM service versus off the rack. I highly recommend checking them out. read more
