I've had local friends play, out of town friends play, and every one has been a great experience. We've also been here for dance parties, wedding receptions, and other special events to great success as well. It's a little worn, it can get super hot and sweaty, the stage is low and the sound is loud. But that's rock and roll. And as the last true rock and roll venue in Ann Arbor, I'm beyond happy it's here and love supporting it when I can. Free pop corn, cheap drinks, great tunes, good times!

The earlier you get there, the better seat selection you'll have. We sat at the stage for one of my favorite bands. You have a little table and chairs (either two or four). It was so intimate and cozy. I loved it. The temperature was perfect. Not freezing from AC, but not muggy. Very comfortable. Sound was excellent and electrical worked perfectly for this show. They do have drinks for sale, but I didn't have anything. Other reviews mention paying low membership dues and then you can buy alcoholic drinks. They have water and cups available too. Really great experience and can't wait to go back!

They're the focus and why people are there and the enjoying of music is a communal experience. North Star Lounge scratches that itch I have for a venue like that here in Ann Arbor. A friend of ours was playing a show here which made my first visit even more enjoyable and special. As a music venue this place is small but not uncomfortable in the slightest. It's what one might call, "intimate." For the show they had set out some rows of chairs but there were several tables and booths if you prefered to have a little more space or would like to eat while you watch the show. They have a limited menu for food and it's prepared at Detroit Filling Station next door (also NSL's owners) which means it's vegan and also delicious. It was a cold evening so went with comfort food and ordered the mac and cheese, which was as excellent as when I've ordered it from DFS. They have a nice cocktail/beer/wine menu but also a substantial NA/Mocktail selection. I've pumped the breaks on alcohol recently so I went with a hot tea to warm up and a mocktail with some muddled fruit and mint (the drinks are seasonal so the menu from that time is no longer posted for me to recall the name but it was very good). My first experience there happened to be a photo shoot that my friend Sarah did for her Alter Ego exhibition. I was very impressed by the studio space -- it was very roomy. In one part I saw Roost Roast's coffee roasting equipment (but no sign of Roost to bug him for a cup!). There was also a desk hosting a vintage typewriter and a curious manuscript. Another section had interesting tye dyed shirts? My friend Paul's spot had some equipment for music, and it was actually his band that I got to see perform later on in that space. It was very nice, you'll see familiar faces around town. It's non-smoking, but that's ok because the porch is a very cozy place to light one. You get a great view of the night sky -- plus it's juuuust far enough from downtown to be able to kick back and relax.

On a recent visit, the music wasn't my favorite, the musicians were definitely talented but a bit too much self-indulgent horn playing that wasn't always pleasing to my ear. But of course your music experience will vary from night-to-night. Drinks & wine list were nice and service was good initially but disappeared when the first set was getting close and I went at least 20-30 minutes with an empty drink glass plus it was about 45 minutes between our first and second courses being served. Only as we were getting close to the end of the first set did servers again reappear to quickly get us our last 2 prix fixe courses and be able to turn our table before the next set. I had heard good things about the food and was looking forward to eating here in addition to the music. Unfortunately the food was a disappointment for me and just about every dish was under-seasoned. The one hit was my wife's branzino, while the one big miss was the red beans & rice add-on to the prix fixe menu - I mean, nobody in NOLA would pay $28 for red beans but if we did I would surely expect more than a few tiny pieces of sausage and to not have undercooked rice and undercooked beans plus need more salt and acid. Brussels were fine but again missing salt and ideally a bit of acid while the pork chop was somewhat fatty but cooked well however other flavors & textures on the plate just weren't very exciting. I would consider coming back to Blue Llama for the right show and the ambience is great, but would probably choose to eat elsewhere. Maybe it was just a bad night in the kitchen, who knows but I'm not inclined to return for dinner again.

For the uninitiated, ZGG is an organization for master masons, whose charitable cause is providing dental care for special needs children. It does so through providing a venue for food and music. Many Monday nights, the Paul Keller Orchestra provides the music. The night we attended, they were Paul-Kellerless, but with special guests. Therese H.'s brother is regular in the PKO, and we enjoyed this opportunity to hear them play. Good drinks, good music, fun times. Pro tip: bring your concert ear plugs. Thanks ZGG.
