I hate it when I need work done on my bike! I feel inadequate for not being able to fix it myself, and I often find the mechanics compound this by being a bit pretentious and sniffy: I sense they'd rather working with £2000 racing bikes, and the riders thereof, whereas my scuffed old road bike is dear to my own heart, but definitely no-one elses. This is where HALFORDS comes in! Halfords is staffed by friendly, enthusiastic young guys who seem to work really hard and aren't pretentious at you - they work in Halfords. And their rates are competitive, and they can literally start work on your bike within an hour of you walking though the door, so great in an emergency. It's *perfect*. The only trouble is, I'm gradually realizing that the staff may lack the experience, or training, or the time, to do the job properly. I've visited them 3 times in the last 2 years; once they didn't put the valve cap back on my wheel after changing the tyre, and another time - I'm reliably informed by a bike savvy friend - they didn't fit my new brake pads properly (I thought they felt a bit strange, but then I didn't feel qualified to second guess a pro). SO, for bike repairs, Halfords have lovely staff, convenience and bargain rates, but are unreliable, and as pointed out by someone else, you'll get no points for supporting local business's. read more
