Take my car in for a near side CV boot. fit me on on a sunday which is a good thing.
I get home and always like to have a look at what work has been done, and the CV boot is held on with cable ties on both ends and there appears to be a oil leak from the drive shaft oil seal.
I phone F1 and ask if it is normal to use cable ties to hold on CV boots, and am told they tried to fit the metal clip but it did not work so they used a cable tie, and it would be fine. I mentioned the oil seal leak and asked if they topped up the gear box when they removed the drive shaft? They said they did not remove the drive shaft and they used a cone expansion tool to fit the CV boot over the drive shaft. I was told that they did not disturb the drive shaft and keep an eye on it.
6 days after this i look under the car again, the drive shaft is certainly leaking plenty of oil and the cable tie has come off the big end of the CV boot and grease is coming out of the boot.
I phone F1 again and ask about the CV boot cable tie, i am given a different story this time regards not using metal clips and they never try and use them, they always use cable ties. I am told to bring the car in so they can see it. I also mention the drive shaft oil seal is leaking and i get aggression straight away, Nathan (the manager) states i am making a serious accusation, and they did not take the drive shaft out. He is really very aggressive to me on the phone. He suggests i bring the car in so they can asses the CV boot and drive shaft.
I think on this overnight and feel that i do not want to take the car back, as if i am met with the same aggression in person that i experienced on the phone, i would not be happy.
I take the car to a proper garage, and am told they have not fitted the CV boot properly, cable ties should not have been used and the oil seal leak is almost certainly due to the fact they disturbed this in fitting the CV boot. Its worth mentioning that i had the clutch changed in this car 12months previously and the drive shaft oil seals were changed then. So these seals are only 12months old and were not leaking prior to taking into F1 auto.
I was charged 76quid for the CV boot, the proper garage are charging me 70 quid, to fit new drive shaft oil seals and fit a new CV boot fitted properly with metal clips.
I am 76 quid out of pocket as all the work F1 auto did had to be done again, with the addition of an oil seal which they damaged.
