We drove about an hour and half from WNC and our daughter drove up from Columbia for a Mother's Day celebration. We were not disappointed in our meal and our time spent together at Half Rooted. Everything was delicious. The owner took time to greet us and suggest items for everyone. If you're in the Greenville area it is worth stopping in for a meal. Oh my goodness ! We ordered takeout for the Worls Cup and it was phenomenal - we wanted the best empanadas in town and we definitely found them ! Gabby helped me With my order and was so personable! I was really excited to try this place and I think most people get the burgers. We went with trio empanadas and I was disappointed I didn't get to see the rainbow of color. The flavor was mild and the yuca was basic. I usually make it at home so I love trying yuca but this wasn't it. The service wasn't the best. There was only one woman short curly hair who was super friendly the others not so much. I felt like I was bothering them. As far as the juice it was super sweet but refreshing. I've been wanting to come here for a while and it always slips my mind. My wife and kid were out with friends tonight so I decided to give it a try. I was greeted by the young man at front and he immediately asked me if it was my first time and I said yes. He walked me through their menu and made a couple suggestions. I chose the shredded chicken patacon which he was fired up about. The food came out fast and looked wonderful. I am no stranger to Colombian food but this was different than anything I have ever had. I was so excited to try Half Rooted since they opened a new spot post food trucking. The meal did NOT disappoint. We tried a bunch of things to sample the menu: chicken rice bowl, pick your own arepa, empanadas and yuca! Chicken bowl was flavorful and filling. The chicken and beef empanadas came out steaming hot, had a nice crunch to the shell and soft yummy filling dipped in green cilantro sauce. I created an arepa with chorizo, plantains, pineapple slaw and sauce. Everything tasted great - I did have a little challenge cutting the arepa with the plastic utensils. No worries - that's when you use you hands and pick it up! The pineapple flavor soaked into the arepa - I had to eat it all! The Restaurant is new and clean. Service with a smile. The chef came over to check on us. A GREAT experience. Will be back! read more

Had a great lunch here on Sunday! So excited for this new option in my neighborhood. VERY reasonably priced for the amount of food. The chicken bowl was fresh and delicious, and definitely 2 meals worth for me, which I happily took home for another day. I snacked on the he plantains and arepas that came with my husband's bowl...yum. I appreciate the time and care taken on every order, and that the chef/owner came around to every table making sure everyone was happy. As this is a new "brick and mortar " restaurant, I'm ok with the disposable cutlery and sparse decor mentioned in other reviews. It's street food style, not fine dining, so ordering at the counter is a-ok by me. Let's support their delicious food and give them time to grow and mature! read more

First off, and very importantly, I must say the food here is EXCELLENT. A creative and well constructed menu that is, for the most part, well executed. If this is typical for food in Colombia, I'm gonna start planning my next vaca soon! We had empanadas, a burger, and yuca fries to share. Our bill was ... nearly $40. o To be clear, this is not a full service restaurant - think more of a Five Guys sort of experience. Service was slow (but very friendly!) - surely in part due to the 'fresh made to order' nature of the food, but still slower than as seemed necessary. o Sorry, pricing is appreciably higher than it should be. The property is still in disrepair (old Cataran's loca if that means anything to you), even though significant interior improvements have been made to make tha place feel QSR. However ... the point is, it's still a diner, or a QSR. And it's still a sketchy old building. Yet prices were about on par with what you'd pay at Hall's Chophouse ... maybe even a tad higher!? o The Burger was significantly smaller than the excellent grilled bun. This is unacceptable for me ... smash the thing or add some meat! The slaw on the burger was delightful. The empanada were near the best we've had in the area. And the yuca fries were a (small yet surprising) treat. Fountain drinks and fountain water are unavailable - You will have to buy your water. And all of this is served on (very high quality) paper dinnerware. This is the sort of place that could take off. The food is just good, and sometimes that's all it takes! But, for us, we can't abide the whole of its shortcomings, environment, and mis-pricing so three stars is what you got. There are just too many great options in our market! read more

Excellent service and even better food! He helped walked us through the menu and did not disappoint with his recommendations! We were very excited to eat at Half Rooted because we love Colombian food, so we went last week. The food was ok and they have a good amount of veg options, but it was served on disposable plates/bowls with plastic silverware. It's a terrible presentation and an unenjoyable dining experience, not to mention awful for the environment. The interior is flat and feels like a cafeteria. The register only has four tip options: No Tip, 20%, 25% and 30% with no Custom Tip option. Starting at 20% when you order your food at the counter, pick up the food from the counter and can bus your own table is ridiculous. An overall a disappointment. read more

We just moved to Greenville, SC from Atlanta and were delighted to read about the Vegan Chef Challenge. Today for lunch we tried Half Rooted. Wow! The options for vegans and vegetarians were more than we expected from a restaurant that serves both meat and meatless options. We decided to try the black bean burger, the lions mane cutlet and empanada trio. Though the entire meal was amazing, what is a winner for us was the black bean burger. We've had many black bean burgers but this burger is beyond ordinary and the flavors complement well. We will be back for sure! read more
