They told me to come in 30 mins and I showed up a little early and the food was all ready for me. No issue with my order (exactly as orderd). Kind of annoyed with myself for not paying cash and saving 10% (I saw this after I left and read the take out menu I took). The Hakka Chow Mein was actually quite good-tasty, well prepared (noodles were not too hard/soft); we ordered spicy and it had a hint of spice but not enough kick. The Chili chicken was decent as well-they have dry or wet options-I ordered the dry and it was good but once again the spice did not have enough kick to it. However, keep in mind that I would not be their core client (who may not be able to handle very spicy food like I can). It was good but not as good as a few of the other Hakka places I would categorize as the "gold standard". They offer Halal as well. Would I come back? For sure! This is a decent place in this part of the 905!

My personal favourite is the dry Bombay chicken. The savoury and spicy tones in contrast to the fresh and tarte mango salad creates such a balanced immersion of flavours! The mango salad is an absolute must order! Truly compliments nearly all the menu items. The chicken momo are also fantastic, quite large and comes with 8 pieces. Fish Pakoora is also a great choice, with the same savoury notes but with a less heavy taste in comparison to the richer Bombay chicken and Bombay beef. Overall amazing taste with large portions at such an affordable price! We all had leftovers to take home! Whenever I order takeout here, one Bombay chicken can last me nearly 3 meals. Service: 5/5 Amazing staff and service! Food came out quick and it was never hard to ask for water or order more items! Atmosphere: 3/5 nothing special about the interior or atmosphere but the patio is nice for the summer. Definitely one of the only worth visiting food spots in Lawrence Park.

The shrimp pakora ($13) is a great way to start the meal. Its batter is applied with enough to…read morecover the large prawns without being overly thick. Although how long the pakoras are fried needs to be standardized - one night it was absolutely perfect creating crispy parcels of prawns, while on a follow-up visit it's golden but the centre slightly underdone so each bite finishes mushy. While it isn't overly flavourful, the spicy Thai basil chutney that comes with it is absolutely delicious. This same chutney goes really well with the Hakka style rice noodles ($12), which is very plain by itself, but is a good choice to pair with other saucier dishes in lieu of rice. They're essentially like Singapore noodles without the curry. Urban Hakka's Singapore noodles ($12) gets the Hakka touch with a healthy dose of curry powder, probably 2 to 2.5 times the normal amount you'll find at Chinese restaurants. It's not terrible, but creates a rather strong dish where you'll only need a small portion. Luckily, they provide a big bowl of rice with the rest of the dishes and even offers refills if it gets empty. You'll need the rice to accompany the Manchurian chicken ($12), which packs a flavourful punch. With a choice between wet and dry, we stuck with the recommended dry and it was fantastic - still a moist dish with each morsel of chicken covered with a salty, spicy, aromatic rub that appears to be made with freshly pureed ginger, garlic, and a host of other spices. Hakka cuisine is essentially Chinese-style cooking outside of China. In Toronto, it tends to signify Chinese dishes with an Indian influence. At Urban Hakka, the dishes that lean towards the Indian side of the spectrum is a lot better, while the Chinese side falls flat. For example, the General Tao chicken ($12) essentially tastes like sweet and sour, which could be overlooked if it wasn't so saucy that the batter is rendered mushy and it tastes like you're eating gluey sweet chicken. The sesame crispy beef ($14) is better, but extremely salty and is too powdery so you taste the flour and corn starch. If you're going to get a "crispy" protein dish, stick with the crispy chicken ($14), which is cut into larger pieces and not as heavily coated. Nonetheless, eat quickly. When it arrives, scalding hot, the sauce is fantastic; once it starts to cool it begins to crystalize and tastes like candy coated chicken. I can't help but notice how their poorly laid out dining room affects the experience. The food delivery companies keep stomping through the dining room to the kitchen in the back, which is distracting when the restaurant is so silent. Urban Hakka wants to create a serene environment, the décor is posh and there's jazz music playing in the background. If they're going to create a tranquil space than they have to go all in and get rid of the distractions... mainly all the people walking by within inches of a diner's table. Simply ask the delivery people to wait by bar and have a staff member get the food from the kitchen (this could be a problem as the place is already understaffed) or ask the delivery people to go to the kitchen through an outside door (likely the more realistic choice).

The owner/manager gives to personal service and answered all of our ingredient questions. Our taste buds have evolved and the competitors are feeding us dishes that are more amplified than the ones we got here. Our favourite Manchurian Pakorra in gravy was OK. Not bad, but the pakoras were to big and just doughy. The gravy again OK. The Tofu Chilli not hugely spicy and felt under seasoned to us. The Fried Rice was again very plain. Noodles were OK and the same goes for Szechuan Mixed Veggies. Felt as if we are eating at a traditional Chinese restaurant rather than Indian style Hakka restaurant.

For those who have followed my Hakka food adventures, I tend to get chilli chicken with rice at any new Hakka eatery. It helps me gauge how yummy I feel each eatery's food is. I used to get spicy garlic chicken as my default, but how this dish is made varies from eatery to eatery. When it's made with bell peppers and onions, count me out. Those ingredients are too fancy for me. I saw spicy garlic chicken on the menu. No, Mary, do not get it. Stick with your usual chilli chicken with rice first. I looked at the graphic. It had chopped garlic, green onions, breaded chicken, all in sauce. It's exactly how I like it. I ignored that voice to get chilli chicken and went for spicy garlic chicken. This dish came with steamed rice. I also got a canned Diet Coke. It didn't take long for me to get to this eatery. It's located at Parkway Mall, next door to CoCo Fresh Tea and Juice. I tend to park in the lot across from Gabby's. I can always find a spot there. I backed into a spot and walked over. This eatery has lunch specials. They looked good. I walked in. The seating area looked relaxed and nice. I headed to the counter and showed my Uber Eats order. It was ready. Yay! I thanked the woman and left with my bagged bundle of food. I stopped at CoCo to get some bubble tea before driving home. I was excited to give my food a try. My car smelled so good. I was tempted to pull over and eat my dinner. I had some self-control and got myself home before I tore into my food. My favourite spicy garlic chicken is at Royal Jasmine. I don't go there as often as I used to, simply because it's close to my workplace and I am still working remotely. The spicy garlic chicken here is now my second-favourite place. There was lots of chopped garlic. The gravy was perfect. The spicy level was all good in my books. This dish had green onions that I enjoyed. The chicken was lightly breaded and delicious. The steamed rice was the perfect portion for me. It helped dumb down some of the spiciness as I ate. My can of Diet Coke hit the spot. It was still cold when I cracked it open. It complemented my food nicely. I now want to get chilli chicken from this place and see how I feel. I loved my food. I'll be back for moe. (370)
