Extremely disappointed. We got: Crispy Beef- This dish was never crispy. Extremely soggy, almost no flavour. Imagine 3 day old leftovers that you heated up in the microwave. Kung Pao chicken-also very soggy but not as bad as the beef. Had OK flavour but the texture was very chewy, very unappealing. Fried chicken wontons-the only bright spot. Crispy, but little flavour to the meat, and not hot. Schezuan chicken chow mein-the only flavour is "spice". No actual taste to the dish. Mixed veggies-hard to screw this up so won't give them any credit for this, but even the broccoli here was overcooked. Even the white rice that I didn't order that they provided was extremely wet and sticky, almost to the point of being sushi rice. Wanna know why they haven't opened their dine in area after COVID? Got takeout here. The lady was nice and we didn't have to wait long for our food. There wasn't anyone else in the restaurant because it was half an hour to closing time at the end of the day. Tried the vegetable noodles, vegetable pakora, a shrimp dish and chili ginger beef. I enjoyed the vegetable pakora - they were balls of veggies mixed with batter, in Manchurian sauce which had garlic bits. For the veggie noodles, also went with Manchurian and it was good level of spicy, but would maybe want to try Szechuan next time. Shrimps were big but didn't come with that many, and I didn't like it that much cause the shrimp didn't taste that fresh. Hey, it's my 100th review of 2019! I had a mission on Wednesday. I had expiring Cineplex coupons and needed to use them fast. I ended up spending my evening in Richmond Hill. I used my coupons for a free movie and free regular popcorn at the Cineplex SilverCity. The movie ended at 9 pm. I was ready for dinner, despite wolfing down all my popcorn. Where should I go? I have been in Hakka food mode for a while. I did a search and found Hakka 77. It was open for another hour. Yes! It took me nine minutes to drive over there. It was a bit challenging for me to find it, as Google Maps tends to throw you at the first business you see in a cluster of stores. I circled around a bunch of stores and finally found it. There were plenty of parking spots. I found one close by, backed into a spot, and walked in. I was immediately greeted by a friendly woman who spoke perfect English. Cool! She sat me at a table that had a chair and a comfy booth section. I went with the comfy side. It's wasn't too busy. There were two other couples dining. As with a new Hakka place, I either order the spicy garlic chicken or chilli chicken. To get the full experience, you need to go spicy. I went with the former. I got a glass of water to start as I waited for my food. Although I don't like a ton of veggies in spicy garlic chicken, the dish has lots of them. That's okay. I needed to try it out. Moments later, my dish came, along with steamed rice. She asked me whether I needed a plate. Typically, you get a dish and I don't recall ever getting that question. However, I am not fussy, especially when I'm hungry and could eat anything presented to me. I said that I was good and pretty much dumped my steamed rice into the bowl of spicy garlic chicken. That's how I roll at home. I felt like I was home here. You get a generous helping of spicy garlic chicken and rice. There was a decent amount of minced garlic in the dish, which I loved. It wasn't a ton where you needed to avoid sitting next to me for a week. It was enough to keep you close. The spice level was fine. It didn't warrant a fire extinguisher, but it had a decent heat level that was enjoyable. I liked all the red and green peppers, onions, broccoli, and carrots. The chicken was tender and flavourful. Yum! The woman checked up on me during my meal and asked if I needed anything, including water after I had polished off everything. Nice! This place accepts debit and credit cards, and cash. I paid with my debit card. There is a tip jar, which I used. I'd come back here again when I'm back in the Hill to try the chilli chicken. It's yummy food at decent prices. My entire meal was $11. Recently, I've been on a Hakka feeding frenzy. Been here a couple of times now and I really enjoy their food. Took the fam on a weekend to the joint and ordered up a whack of food. Chilli Chicken, Ginger Beef, H&S Soup, Golden Chicken Dumpling, Eggplant, and Chicken and Mixed Veggies. The Ginger Beef was not my fav. I forgot that I liked CRISPY ginger beef. One thing for sure, there was plenty of ginger. Minus that plate everything else was very good. Big on the list, their Chilli Chicken and the Eggplant. The place was not busy. Usually their big days are the weekdays where they have their excellent lunch value menu. The lady that served us was extremely pleasant and helpful. Their All Day Combo is such a good value as the portion is generous and even comes with a choice of pop. Chili Chicken (chili, garlic, onion) Manchurian Chicken (chili, garlic, onion, ginger, cilantro) Both looked and tasted similar with the same soy sauce gravy base. I randomally stumbled across this place while I was in Markham - the reviews looked promising so I thought I would give it a shot! The restaurant was empty when we walked in but we were greeted by a very nice server. She reccomended the chili chicken, manchurian chicken, crispy ginger beef and schezuan fried rice. All were excellent options and I would highly recommend them! Overall this is a great choice if you're in the area - it is definitely comparable to other hakka joints - you wont be disappointed! Atmosphere/Service: A nice small restaurant in an industrial looking area/shop area. Would never have imagined a restaurant to be where it was. Due to covid, I had to call in my order. It was popping as the lady who picked up placed me on hold right away and I waited for 5-10 minutes before getting her again. She was nice though and when I went to pick up the food she had apologize for the delay Menu/food: Love my hakka food and this was good, but definitely on the spicy side. Really wish we could have had different spicy levels as I ordered three dishes and all three were at least a spice level 4/5. I ordered a beef, chicken, and fish and they were all delish! In the mood for Hakka so I yelped best Hakka in Markham and this place popped up. I was a bit underwhelmed as the lunch specials are $8 or so but then i asked for extra gravy (.35 cents more) and extra spicy (.75 cents more) I found the rice portion to be very small compared to other hakka destinations in Markham. Food was decent but definitely nothing to go crazy over. read more

Hakka food has been something I regularly enjoy, and this place was very enjoyable. It's a little bit hard to fins due to the location but it is worth the search. The prices were relatively inexpensive compared to other hakkas I've been too and the menu included your typical choices (ex. Chilli Chicken, Chicken Pakoras) I'd definitely come back but I was just confused as to why the place was empty on Friday night. More of a takeout than a dine in place. read more

Tried this place at random on a Saturday night. It's a bit hard to spot from the road, but definitely worth the trip. My boyfriend and I started the meal with the friend wontons and the fish pakora. The wontons are pretty standard, but had a good flavor. The sweet Thai chili sauce that they came with definitely elevated them above what you would normally get at a Chinese restaurant. The fish pakora were amazing! They were hot, crispy, and full of flavor. They are decently sized and would easily feed five people with two each, but we were more than happy to devour them. For entrees, my boyfriend had the General Tao's beef whereas I went with the Thai green curry. The General Tao's beef was just as good as you would find at any other Chinese restaurant. It had a good heat, with lots of vegetables in addition to the tender beef. However, the green curry was even better. It was so full of flavor. The curry sauce was also really good with the pakora dipped in it. I could have just eaten the sauce and been happy with it. I will definitely be ordering it again. Came here on a Sunday late afternoon for a late lunch, and the place wasn't busy at all. There were only 2 other people eating aside from us. Service was quick. The place is clean and neat. They even have free wi-fi! Me and my fiance ordered Chili Chicken. Mine was mild and his was medium spiciness. Only took about 10 minutes for the food to arrive. We took advantage of their all-day specials, and for $6.95 I think the price is fair for what you get. I got a Nestea with the combo, and I got charged an extra 50 cents for it. My fiance ordered root beer and there was no extra charge for that drink. The mild one is pretty good, which is still a bit spicier than I expected. The Chili Chicken at Faley Restaurant is still better in my opinion, because I believe that has more flavor. Food is average, but the service is great and the all-day specials are worth a try. Another hidden gem in Markham and this place is REALLY hidden. Tucked right in between two plazas within the same plaza where Marathon milk tea shop and Inaho Japanese restaurant are. At first I thought this was a Hakka food place, but after stepping in, it's actually an Indian Chinese restaurant (or do they mean the same thing?!!). Either way it doesn't matter because this place serve great food at VERY good prices! They have a decent selection of Daily Specials which is around $6.99 before tax and it comes with rice and your choice of side, a spring roll and a soup or a drink. On top of the very good prices, the food portion is HUGE, which is perfect for one person! $6.99 with such large portion, you cannot go wrong. A group of 3, we ordered the Green Curry Chicken Rice, Red Curry Chicken Rice and as per the owner's recommendation, Chili Chicken Rice and a plate of Pakoras to share. The Green Curry Chicken was great, just about right in terms of spiciness and great curry flavour. The Red Curry has very strong Coconut flavour which I was not a big fan off, but taste wise it is still very decent because of the great tasting chicken. Chili Chicken is by far the best rice dish out of the three, great sauce with nicely fried chicken meat on rice! White rice needs a lot of sauce and this was perfect! The best of all is the Pakoras!! I tried it at a friend's wedding last year and I enjoyed it, so when I noticed they serve them here, I order one plate as well. It has around 10 Pakoras and they are fried to perfection!!! Great spiciness, flavour and fried texture, the Chicken Pakoras was fried so well it tasted like Popeye's fried chicken!! Finally, a new hakka place closer to me. Wanted to come here for a while and finally ended up here with a big group of friends on a Saturday night after being turned away from several restaurants. The interior is quite simple but clean. When I was there, the staff seemed a bit new and seemed to be still in training, therefore our ordering was bit slow and they forgotten one of our dishes. However, the boss came around and expedited our forgotten dish. We ordered two hakka fried rice, beef and chicken. The proportions were quite big and filling and people were satisfied. To fill my veggie quota I ordered the stir fried green beans. It was quite good, and relatively well portioned and not too oily. I also ordered a cashew nut chicken because I didn't want anything fried. And it was exactly what I had wanted, a healthy portion of chicken and veggies with rice. I also tried a piece of their chili chicken and it was delish! Maybe another time when I have quota for eating fatty dishes. Overall I thought the food was pretty good and seemed to be less oily than their F* competitor, which is quite alright with me. The employees were very nice and friendly. I do understand that they just opened and may need to work out a few kinks. I'm sure the next time I visit, the service will be smoother. read more

Let me start off by saying I have been eating hakka for over 10 years, it is one of my favourite foods! However, I am extremely dissatisfied with the service/food I just received from Hakka 77. I ordered the vegetable pakora (Manchurian style) and stir fried green beans, both came with steamed rice - plus I ordered two additional steamed rice. I picked up my order around 6:30pm and made sure to pay cash. My total came to $23.70. I was under the impression you get 10% off orders over $20, but I assumed my order was just below. I quickly peeked at the bag and noticed there was no soya sauce or chilli sauce. I asked the server for both and she handed me two packets of soya sauce and two packets of chilli sauce... I always make sure to check my takeout order once I get to my car and was disappointed when I opened the container for the vegetable pakora. I made the assumption that the vegetable pakora was served in a similar style as the chicken and shrimp pakora, spicy and breaded.... I was very wrong. Hakka 77's version of vegetable pakora is simply Manchurian balls drenched in chilli sauce... I went back into the restaurant to let them know this was not what I expected and the server said this was the way their restaurant prepares vegetable pakora... then she added "we make the vegetable pakora wet by default. It's nice with the gravy." If you're a fan of pakora, you know the deliciousness you sink your teeth into when you take a bite. This was not pakora, this was veggie balls soaked in gravy. There was no offer to change it when she clearly saw I was dissatisfied and came back into the restaurant for clarification. I walked out of the restaurant disappointed and anxious about the food I was about to eat. Once I got home and started eating the "pakora" I immediately noticed the balls tasted burnt on the outside and oddly mushy on the inside. The chilli gravy had an odd after taste... the combination of burnt, mushy veggie balls and the gravy made me toss out the plate I prepared... what a waste. As you can see in the photo, they put my four orders of steamed rice in one container. Not sure if that would be equivalent to four containers of steamed rice... I went back on the Hakka 77 site to take a look at how they describe the vegetable pakora and was reminded customers are supposed to get 10% off cash orders over $20... I decided to calculate my order: vegetable pakora $8.99, stir fried green beans $8.50 and the two additional orders of white rice $1.75 each (total $20.64 before tax)..... So they forgot to give me the discount? Also, there was no description of the vegetable pakora on the menu. It's possible I may have been spoiled by other Hakka restaurants in Durham and Scarborough that automatically add a handful of chilli sauce and soya sauce, plus napkins and cutlery to the bag. They also make sure to ask "do you want it wet or dry?" Plus, the food is MUCH BETTER with larger portions. I just moved to the Markham area and was hoping to find another great Hakka restaurant here. In the future, I will definitely make the drive to other locations to get better food and service. read more

Came here at 7pm on a Saturday night. Had come to go to the nearby restaurant mall, couldn't find parking, so we tried Haka 77. It was quiet on a Saturday. It's a bit secluded and not visible from the street. Apparently they do a lot of take out. We were greeted by friendly people and seated immediately. There's a pretty varied menu. My girlfriend and I decided on the deep fried wontons and the fish pakora for apps. I also had a small seafood soup. Our mains were the General Tao's beef for me and the Thai green curry for her. I will review each dish. Wontons: these were pretty standard fare for a westernized Chinese place. They were crispy, hot and flavorful. Filling was good, and the sweet Thai chili sauce they came with was tasty. This is not my favorite dish, but from a technical aspect they were perfect. Could not have made them better, and if you like wontons, you will not be disappointed. My girlfriend loved them. Fish Pakora: these were amazing. Complex yet subtle flavor, made better with a squeeze of lime. They were served piping hot, crispy and delicious. The portion was 10 pieces each about 2.5 inches across. This is easily an appetizer for 5 people. They are also pretty good cold, which is great because you will have leftovers. I'm not kidding when I say piping hot. They look like something you'd want to stuff whole into your mouth and then spend 5 minutes trying to chew. When they are cold that's a great idea. When fresh, if you try that you will need a trauma ward, reconstructive surgery and a burn unit. Seafood soup: delicious. Fish, crab, shrimp, egg, tofu, carrots, peas and a hint of cilantro. I added a bit of salt and some of the delightful chili sauce and it was excellent. 10/10 would eat until I explode. Good old General Tao: if you like this dish, you will like their version. Tender beef, tasty chillis, celery and onions in a hot, sticky mess of a sauce. I ate enough that I began to question my life choices but not my meal choices. Green curry: I stole a bunch of it from my girlfriend. It was also an amazing dip for the pakora. Coconutty, tenderiffic, veggieful and currylicious. I know these are not real words. It was tasty enough that it needed new words. I'm ordering it next time. This dish and the general Taos came with a big shared bowl of steamed rice. I strongly recommend this restaurant. Give it a shot, you will not be disappointed. read more

Overall, I have to say that this Hakka place was disappointing. I think I had higher expectations due to Yelp reviews and the fact that the East end tends to have better Asian food overall than the West end. Upon walking in, the restaurant looked clean and only a few tables were filled. It got a bit busier throughout the night though. There were some menu options to choose from but not as many as other Hakka places. This doesn't matter much to me as long as the food is good but some people might want to keep this in mind before going. My husband and I ordered the chili chicken since it was raved about on Yelp and it was the most flavourful out of the 3 orders but only a bit spicy. This dish wasn't anything to complain about but we've had better elsewhere. The hot and sour soup (which I thought was hard to mess up) was awful and just did not taste anything like how it should! I really don't recommend getting this! We also ordered vegetable fried rice which was bland and even worse the next day when we ate the leftovers. In terms of price, it was reasonable for the portions but because the flavours didn't wow me, I unfortunately can't say that I'll be back. read more

Would definitely go back for them alone. Good seasoning, crispy outside and soft inside. The chili chicken was great. Out of the 7 Hakka places I've been to, this is the top 3. The vegetable pakoras is a bit different, smaller dumpling type things in sauce. It was also very good. When you order the $7 meals you get to choose spring roll, pop or soup. I got the soup, it was corn and something. It wasn't memorable. Next time I'd go pop and just order the hot and sour soup as an app. The service was a little slow in refilling our water (I know small gripe). This is a hard 4.5 rating.
