Spicy chicken with hakka noodles lunch special
    Catherine S.

It's my second time dining in and I finally got pictures to share this time. It's located in a small strip plaza on the north west corner of Kingston and Brock rd and it's so easy to miss, unless you're specifically looking for this place. I went for lunch on a weekday with a friend and we both ordered off their lunch special menu which comes with soup of the day. We were served a pot of tea and a very friendly server took our order and brought out soy sauce, salt & pepper and condiments (hot sauce and hot vinegar). I like that they pay attention to small details like this as most of the time when condiments are left on the table, the containers get dirty and gunky. Their corn soup was surprisingly good for even a corn soup hater like me. I never enjoyed the sweetness of the soup but HF's version was very subtly sweet so it tasted much better. I added some of the onion/green chili vinegar to my soup which cut the sweetness even further. My friend's chili chicken came on a decent mound of white rice and my spicy chicken on hakka noodles with some veggies. My friend who does not tolerate heat as well was only able to finish half of her lunch so take note when you're ordering. My spicy chicken was dry with lots of chili flakes coating each fried chicken pieces. The only thing that would have made this dish better is if the chicken pieces were not as dried out from either over-frying or re-frying. I didn't enjoy the accompanying hakka noodles as they were thicker and quite chewy. I could feel this lunch sitting in my stomach for hours afterwards. The overall flavour of their food is something to applaud, though. The seasoning is spot on (at least for me) which I find most hakka places don't do very well. I am usually guzzling water after a hakka lunch/dinner but I didn't feel like I needed to after eating here. Since HF is so close to home for me, I will come back for more quick meals in the future!

Friendly staff. Said meat is halaal and that they get the chicken from Sargeant Farms, and other meats from local supermarkets halal butchers. We ordered hot garlic chicken, crispy ginger beef, lemon chicken, shrimp fried rice, chow mein and hot and sour soup. The soup was good. This is why they are getting one star and I will not be returning: the lemon chicken did not taste lemony, nor sweet nor tart. When I brought the food home I had to add lemon and sugar to try and give it the taste and it still did not taste like it should (I would have had add more and take a lot time to basically finish cooking it). I don't know what they think they were making. The chef should have at least tasted the food to making sure it had the right taste before packaging it. The same goes for the hot garlic chicken. It was neither hot nor garlicky. I did not taste the garlic taste on it at all. The crispy ginger beef was fine. As for the fried rice and the chow mein, it lacked flavour. Again, we had to put it in the pan to add seasoning and flavour. We will not be returning and I would not recommend this restaurant unfortunately. I would recommend you try "Island Mix" instead. It's a couple dollars more per dish but still worth it.

I ordered fried rice, chili chicken & shrimp and the food caused food poisoning. everyone who ate the food had a headache, vomitting and muscle aches. i called the restaurant to complain & they didn't even care, the man said go ahead, write a bad review. Horrible food and customer service.

I can't believe I never knew this place existed. Pretty good food and prices are decent. Portions are pretty good too and the staff is super friendly!

    Chilli Chicken

The best spot for lunch in pickering. Try the chilli chicken lunch special (ask for it dry if you like it extra crispy) comes on rice with a soup and spring roll for just under $10

Love the food when it's fresh. Lasts for a couple of days well too. Rarely misinterpreted my orders. Willing to make food mild medium.

We do have an allergy and requested no celery, there was in fact celery in the dishes we discussed accommodating the allergy with, we also asked for vegetarian Singapore noodles, and there was meat. Albeit a lot of meat for what it's worth, but when you're a vegetarian that ain't really a selling point. Picking it all out was a nightmare. We found the portions and price very generous, we were even given a free serving of meat for the size of the order, everything was fresh but most of the dishes we got were in a crazy amount of sauce where you wouldn't really expect any sauce or a very little like the Thai basil stir fried veggies and tofu, it was drenched in a big puddle of sauce.

Tip: This restaurant is on Skip the Dishes…read more Yesterday, I was in Pickering. I wanted to grab some takeout for dinner before heading home. Skip the Dishes had a discount code. If I spent $30 on an order, I'd get 50% off. Sweet! I found Dragon Gem. I looked at the menu. Whenever I see ho fun on the menu, I have to get it. My order consisted of these items: - Beef ho fun - Large wonton soup I got an estimated time of ten minutes for my order to be ready. I thought that it was a mistake. It made sense when I got to the restaurant. I needed ten minutes to drive over here. It's in a plaza that I have frequented before. It has a Rexall that I shopped at in the past. I had no problem finding a parking spot near this restaurant. I backed into an available spot and walked in. I have never seen so many folks in a kitchen! I'd guess that there were eight folks making food and packing up orders. Wow! I got the nicest woman. I rattled off the last four numbers of my Skip the Dishes order. She found it and my name on the order. Yay! She handed me my food in a paper bag with a plastic bag around it. I thanked her and left. Everything was packed well. No leakage. My food and soup were still hot when I got home with it. I looked forward to chowing down. I started with the wonton soup. The broth was perfect. It was clear and had a touch of salt that I liked. There were many wontons that had flavourful pork filling. Each wonton was softer than expected, but it was nice not to exert much effort chewing it. It had sliced barbeque pork in it. So good! I got crunchy sticks. I've never been a fan of them, so I didn't put them in my soup. I loved the beef ho fun. It was perfect. It had lots of tender beef slices. The rice noodles (ho fun) were so good. They were stir-fried and tasted amazing. My dish had sliced onions and bean sprouts in every bite. The portion size was generous. Excellent food! I'd return for more when I'm in the area. (54)

For starter, this area during late April was attracting a LOT of mosquitoes for some reason...Even around the store, it was filled with mosquitoes...It was even camping in my car as well...If i had a pet frog, at least, he/she will be a happy camper! :P I have to say prices here is quite reasonable with decent portion sizes as well. Here is what we ordered for take-out... #75 Stir Fried Green Bean ($7.95)- Decent veggie dish mixed with some sauce I wasn't really able to identify well. #9 Sweet & Chilli Wings-12pcs ($9.99)- Wings with sweet chilli sauce mix...Although it did make the wings/drums a bit soggy because of it, but the sauce has a lil heat and was decent taste. I'd say ask for sauce on the side next time so you still get some crunch on the wings. #119 Spicy Ginger Beef ($10.45)- Its lightly breaded piece of 'beef or chicken' with green peppers, onion, and carrots with special ginger sauce they call it...Unfortunately, the dish I got was not beef but chicken instead... You can tell by colour/texture. I ask the staff about this while checking my food before going but for some reason the young staff member wasn't too sure, so I didn't want to bother them and just took it anyways...Taste wise, this had decent flavour and I wouldn't mind getting again in the future... Overall, the price tag here is quite good when comparing elsewhere...The portion is decent and flavour is there...Only downfall from what I heard is the time it takes to prepare can be quite long...Lucky for me, our dishes only took about 20 mins to prepare...So pick a non-busy time to order by phone or in-person... Cash is KING here...Pay cash and get 10% off... *Discount not valid with combos and dinner sets* :)
