The standard ramen dish

It's ok. The ramen I thought was kinda meh.. but I think that's what traditional ramen is supposed to taste like probably according to my Japanese friends. For my appetite and the price, it wasn't enough quite frankly. I think a bowl of Pho of the same price at one of the nearby Viet restaurants would be of way better value for money.

I love the simplicity of the menu selection at Hakataya. I'm a big fan of ramen places and Hakataya hits the spot whenever I have my ramen craving. I'm not really too keen on the small spaces to eat but it does deliver that Japanese-style ramen shop experience. The quality of the food has been very consistent in my many visits which is a plus. This means I can always count on Hakataya to deliver the experience I have come to expect. Staff are always friendly and although it takes some time to get your food especially when it is busy, the waits are never really too long. The place does get packed, so plan ahead when coming with a big group.

I came across this place in sunny bank and it was definitely a unique Japanese soup experience. I was in my cravings for unprocessed noodles with real meat and this soup definitely meets the quality standards. The pork cuts on top of the soup were tender and soft and added a nice texture and flavor to the spicy soup. The soup was good but a little pricey at $12 for a large soup. A few blocks down here is my favorite Japanese soup stop Mapen.

Best ramen in Brisbane...yeah you see that...I just said it is the best! So don't wait... Come and enjoy the meaning of 'best' ramen in town!!!

I'll tell you a secret. Hakataya Ramen is so amazing I use to drive 45 minutes to the Gold Coast for a bowl of their noodles. When they finally opened at Sunnybank Plaza, it saved me copious amount of petrol money. However, there is still the queue to contend with plus they'll usually run out of soup stock by 8pm most nights. Apparently, the soup stock is the secret behind their success. It's simmered for 39 hours and chock full of vitamins and pork bones and I don't know what else - perhaps liquid gold. They only have four noodle options on their menu and they're equally as good. I usually go for the Spicy pork noodle soup - with a serve of extra ramen. You can help yourself to the spicy Japanese pickles which make a delicious accompaniment to the meal. While researching for this review, I found out that a new Hakataya has just opened up at Market Square, the shopping centre diagonally opposite Sunnybank Plaza. Hakataya is taking over the world - and I for one will be supporting it. Trading Hours: Open 7 days 9:00 -20:50 (unless they run out of food)

Tasteless ramen. The pickles were too salty. Server was unfriendly. But decor was good.

Awesome food! Average service. However, the food alone was enough to keep us coming once every two weeks!

The menu isn't large, it's just 4 different styles of ramen, gyoza or ton-meshi (pork soup flavoured rice).

Not even kidding but I have Oishi's phone number saved for ease of access to make reservations whenever my friends and family are craving good sushi. That's when you know it's a definite go to ! They don't mess around with silly western flavors or fusions - their menu is quite traditional Japanese. You can order sushi, noodles, side dishes, rice dishes here which is great if you're not feeling just sushi. They offer fresh sashimi and fried sushi rolls too which is so yummy. Had the udon noodles for the first time rather than just the sushi and I was so pleased it was so simple but executed well.

I'm a big fan because.. 1) This place has A&W Rootbeer (woohoo, go the asian in me) 2) This place has green tea ice cream 3) This place serves up a mean agedashi tofu (om nom nom nom) My weakness for agedashi tofu was realised here along with my weakness for the seaweed salad, potato salad and edamame. Oh the edamame. So much of it. In fact the Yakitori Chicken is pretty good too, so is most the stuff on the entree section of the menu. Damn this place! So our bill did come up to a whopping $80 for the 4 of us... but we left there feeling satisfied, feeling like we would come back and feeling like we wouldn't be sick the next day - which is always a good thing. Definetely going back there.

Not that I'm complaining because where it's situated is convenient for me to get to plus there's easy parking. Shinbashi has a $35 all-you-can-eat Japanese BBQ which is always a popular option. I fyou go this route, make sure to try their fantastic wagyu and marble beef. However, my husband and I always splurge on their $99 Signature Selection for two. It includes these tasty additional extras like Bacon asparagus and Bacon rice cakes. There's also this buttery cheese, sweet potato dish which takes about twenty minutes to cook up on the BBQ but is worth the wait. The service here is great. They always remember to refill my green tea and there's this delicious complimentary soup which comes in a teapot that you can easily fill up on and ruin your dinner if you're not careful. If you live further afield, Shinbashi Yakiniku is definitely worth the drive out to Underwood.

Being a Japanese BBQ place you basically cook the meat on the hot plate in front of you and dip in delicious sauces before noming down. Staff are genuinely helpful. There's Japanese rice beer to match, though I didn't see how that was going to be consumed amongst the plethora of meats in front of me. Also good to know - the meat is delicious, because it is marbled with delicious fat. I went on a Tuesday night and it was packed. Defs popular amongst the locals.. Or those who know its there. So man up, make the drive, and give this place a go :)

Firstly, it's a pity this is such a small shop with no proper seating areas for those wanting to eat "in." I've put speech marks in that because the seating area is actually outdoors as the place is a kiosk. There's really only room for maybe four people to sit there. Secondly, I LOVED the yakitori! The rice bowl had seaweed and spring onions and yakitori sauce, which was a savoury sweet and addictive flavour. So yum. And at $8.50, it's definitely a bargain. I really wish they had a bigger space. An actual restaurant so people can sit comfortably. I would definitely go back again to try out other things on the menu.

Nikumaki Honpo has a little shop front which faces onto the parking lot. Even all the signs pointing people in its direction doesn't direct as much traffic here as this little shop deserves. It also doesn't help that they sell obscure parcels of deliciousness called Nikumaki. What is that you ask. Well, they're oven baked steamed rice balls wrapped with marinated slices of pork. They really are delicious though not as practical to eat as a sushi roll. One roll makes a decent lunch and at $4 each, it's a bargain price. Make sure you ask for the free chilli and coriander toppings. Simply delicious! Warning: Nikumakis are baked regularly and come out of the oven piping hot. Be careful not to burn yourself.

After a tip of from a friend in the area, however, I decided to roll the dice - or should i say, rice! I was greeted by an older lady with friendly face the moment I walked in the door. And after trying manfully but ultimately unsuccessfully to get the damn thing fully closed I took in my surroundings. I absorbed the brown colour scheme, three smallish tables and... I had taken in my surroundings. This was clearly one of those places were all the action was saved for the kitchen, or so i hoped. I looked up to see a menu board that boasted well over fifty items, including typical Japanese favourites (teriyaki noodles, Japanese curry) to more out of the box fare (octopus balls, eel). I went with a dish that was accompanied by a yummy looking photo and while I'm not entirely sure what the ingredients were it sure was tasty. As I ate I noticed the staff preparing fresh sushi rolls behind the counter and opted to try the spicy beef. Perhaps not a traditional choice but one I can heartily recommend. A sentiment that goes for Oishi Sushi also.
