Best ramen in Brisbane. And I say this as a fat prick who has eaten several bowls of hearty ramen across Japan.

Try the ever tasty Hakataya Ramen they said. And boy were they right. I went on my merry Yelp way…read morewith a fellow Brisbane Yelper Marianna S to experience what this newly opened shop had to offer. Marianna got the classic ramen and I got the char siu ramen (just has more meat in it) and for the $10 and $13 dollars we spent respectively, and what we received in return was nothing short of a taste sensation. The noodles so fresh, the soup in all its brothy goodness and the meat... that just melted away in our mouths. How? What? Where? Why? Wow. The ever so friendly and boisterous staff were friendly, courteous and very welcoming. They showed us the menu in their plain as day Japanese English to the best of their ability and opened their arms to shout that we were welcome and to please come in. COME IN! The shop itself is quite small but there is an outside seating area as well. I also ordered the Gyoza and it was both fresh, hot off the grill and ever so tasty. One thing about Hakataya, if you want another serve of noodles it's absolutely free on one condition. You must yell 'KAEDAMA' in order to get it as the staff laughed and told us. KAEDAMA I yelled and another fresh ramen noodle was on its way. They give you a little saucer of spicy preserved vegies to go with your soup (Marianna ate mine) as a side and did I mention they are so friendly? As Marianna pointed out 'they are actually talking to us! They don't talk at the other place!' (other place being the Hakataya across the road in Sunnybank Plaza owned by the same people). Super great and fresh tasting Ramen, easily the best Char Siu you will ever eat. KAEDAMA!

All that was needed was his ID in order to secure his free bowl of ramen. I ordered the Nagahama Ramen which is the standard pork ramen, and it was delicious of course. You're also able to get free extra noodles if you so wish. I would eat ramen here daily if it was viable

But, Motto…read moreMotto has one of Brisbane's best restauranteurs (think of names like Sono) behind it and it shows. In fact, the road to Motto Motto finally opening the door was about three years in the making and the care & dedication to make sure the final result was of the highest quality is evident in everything from the branding to the food. Nestled just outside of the main shopping centre at Garden City in the new dining precinct, Motto Motto is easily spotted by its Kelly green walls and origami geometric shapes. The menu tends towards a mix of traditional and westernised Japanese but all falls into the "something for everyone" category. The menu is designed to be a make your own bento to the extent that the ceramics were made especially for Motto Motto and to be joined together. There's small sides, ramen or Japanese rolls. My favourite is the chirashi rice bowl. A ample bowl of rice with raw sashimi, salmon roe and a scattering of spinach. For under $15 it's a champion dish that will leave you satisfied and not wanting more. It does tend to get a little busy during peak times so eye off your table and take it fast!

Motto Motto offers a range of well-loved food Japanese favourites such as noodle & rice bowls that go above and beyond the typical food court sushi & miso soup. As a vego I'm obsessed with their potato salad roll. Yes, it is exactly like it sounds and it's awesome but there is plenty on offer for those of you who are carnivorously inclined. Also don't go past the seaweed sprinkled fries. Somehow the way that Japanese do fries is far superior to everyone else and they come with Kwepi mayo! Don't forget to check out the drink menu - alongside the familiar there are some Japanese sodas and cocktails you might want to try out.

In Brisbane, Sunnybank is probably our best bet for lower-end Japanese food, and so we decided to try out Menya Mappen, since it's generally delicious chain. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect since I hadn't really researched what it really was, but I really liked the whole 'retro-Japanese' noodle bar ambience with wooden stools and old newspapers tacked on the wall. The noodles (soba) themselves were not bad, though I wish I could've tried the udon, and the flavor of the soup base [of the Bukkake] was good! The takoyaki ($2) was good, but I like mine with wasabi, but it was still a treat. Overall, I had a good experience, and the food was good for the price!

Once you go inside the shop, you order and then get your food first. Add any additional food that you would like, such as Takoyaki, seaweed or jellyfish, and then you pay at the cash register. Pretty easy to order! I've tried the curry udon and the Mentaiko Bukkake udon. Both were really good! The udon is so soft and flavourful! The curry udon comes with carrots, potatoes and a curry broth. The Mentaiko Bukkake udon comes with soy sauce, seaweed and cod roe. Do not eat the cod roe by itself! It's REALLY salty. It's best to mix it in with the udon. The Takoyaki is pretty yummy! It's soft and has real octopus pieces inside. Water, utensils and napkins are all self-serve. Make sure to return your dishes to the "return dishes" area! Oh and the workers are really nice!

Generally is quite good, well flavoured, plenty of vegetables and a decent sized small bowl. Last week, it was the first thing I ordered. It came quite quickly, before my wife's first couple of aburi. Without a joke, there was about 1 centimetre of miso in the bottom of the bowl. It was incredulous. Taste was fine but about 5 spoonfuls finished it. Though I was ordering more, I cancelled them and left. A long term customer bringing the family on a regular basis, and they often go separately now, and that is what you get! Seriously, blame the server, the weather, whatever - it was a joke. Same big urn in the back right hand corner that it comes out of - how can someone serve such a paltry amount and think that is ok? Wife's was fine but I don't put up with absolutely disgraceful service like that. Was suggested to me to go tonight, but there is no way I am going back until I am sure they have picked up their game. Reminded me to highlight the poor service I received.

They offer a variety of sushi train sushi, udon, ramen, sizzling platters, sashimi, mochi, cheesecake, sodas & Japanese alcohol. I ate here recently & their sashimi was fresh, their food was hot & fresh & the sushi ordered was 10/10 no faults. Everything is ordered by touch screen too. Yes staff are busy at times because this place is always packed. Expect lines at dinner time no doubt.
