I measured my hair this morning while it was still wet, and from the root to the tip it was between 27" and 28" long. My last haircut had been in late 2008, and it was an A line angled bob (think Cleopatra, with longer tips) and prior to that it was a chin length pageboy bob (think Prince Valiant, but not as flattering) back in summer of 2004. Other than colour I'm not very experimental with my hair style, and that can be traced back to very bad shag hair cuts I received in the mid 80s overseas. Those ended up looking like mullets, and ever since then I've kept it a blunt length of varying degrees with bangs. I fear the snip of the scissors and being in that stylist's chair just as much as I fear heights and spiders. I'd been mulling over getting my hair cut again for awhile, since I'd grown it out long for my sister's wedding last year, hence the length. The ends were starting to fray, and it started to feel heavy and weighed down and maintaining it was starting to be a pain in the ass. I'd either ponytail it, french braid it, or split it down the middle into two braids. My hair started to not look so good from being pulled back all the time, and I was ready to say hello to the Prince Valiant look and cut it all off and donate the bulk to Locks of Love. Alas, Locks of Love will not take hair that has been previously bleached, and a love affair with pink hair for a few months last year killed that possibility, even though I've been au natural for the last 14 months. Enter Geoff and the Hair Zone. I drive by this place in Poway all the time. It's in the same mall with all the thrift shops, and they have this funky sign with cosmic stars and Invader Zim style lettering. My Mama offered to fork up $20 to the local no name hair joint up the street (the same one that charges $16 for a hair cut, add $3 for shampoo) but the ladies in there never look like they're having fun, and for what might possibly be a drastic change in style, I didn't want to just leave the task up to a chop shop. No, I wanted the salon treatment, and if I had to fork up the big bucks to do it I was going to do it. But I didn't fork up big bucks for this. Geoff sat me down, asked me what I liked most about my hair and what I didn't like about it. We discussed what I do for a living, my hair care routine, and what I expected out of my hair. He said I had beautiful long hair, and that it looked thirsty, but he didn't want to chop it all off because length looks great on me. But we did agree that about 5" of it was going to go today. My hair is damaged from lack of trims, from processing, from the sun and salt water exposure, but he felt that there was life to be coaxed out of my hair so he said to give him 10 minutes and he'll make me a believer. Then I saw my face (and hair) and I'm a believer. I tipped generous today (40%) because he took the time to do a consult, and my total out the door for a shampoo/condition, cut, blow dry was $35. THIRTY FIVE DOLLARS, what a steal! That's with a $10 tip. I was expecting to pay around $50 minimum like most other salons in the area, but this was just eye popping. I will be back. I didn't drink the kool aid, but I did try the shampoo and seeing how my hair looks now, even after driving home with the windows open, my hair looks fantastic. I dare say it hasn't looked this good since I did a shampoo ad in the Philippines back when I was 14. That was in 1987, yo, and right before the horrific shag haircut. Best of all, it didn't break my wallet (I'm a college student again, working part time, raising two teenage boys so every cent in this stupid recession counts), and my husband especially likes it because, and I quote, I can still put it into pigtails and prance around like the (half) Asian school girl I am. read more

When Geoff suggests something, he does it in a very good way that shows he really knows what he's doing. One time I saw Geoff deal with another client who wasn't happy with her color and cut. I think Geoff handled it professionally and respectfully. When my hair was fried from a perm (another salon), Geoff gave me tips on how to make it healthy again. Wow, I can't even believe that this many people gave this place a perfect rating. The floors were filthy, the walls were dirty, the stations were atrocious, the styling and decor was not only haphazard but plain unfinished and amateur. If I am going to be paying $120 before tip for a cut and color I want to feel pampered and relaxed. Beat up musical instruments randomly hanging from the ceilings? Left over amps and speakers as decor? Ok, maybe if it was done by a professional stager, but it just looks junky, like something a 19 year old just out of school would put together as their "dream salon." Moving on from simply aesthetics. I requested a short, asymmetrical bob. I have naturally mousy/dishwater blonder hair. I however have always had straight up brown eyebrows though, and so I requested we go into a brunette because I thought it would be a nice change and the darker color on my skin would frame my face nicely with the cut. I was then told that brown wouldn't work for me. I then told her I wasn't worried about trying something new out, because I could always fix it later... but that I was REALLY sick of being blonde, and had *ROCKED* a deep burgundy for 2 years and really felt comfortable. She finally agreed. She proceeded to put in my all-over color (without color blocker, of course...). I was never put under a drier... I was left in the chair for EXACTLY 20 minutes, and then we rinsed my color out. Then she proceeded to highlight my hair WITHOUT FOILS. Yes, you heard that right, she did all over color by itself, then highlighted my hair, minus foils, letting the highlights get splotchy all over the darker hair. At this point, I want to walk up and get out.... HOWEVER I recognize that this might cause many other stylists, who are all paying for their stations, to lose a customer when they are in fact excellent stylists... so I don't throw a fit. I figure it's something I can wok out with her another time. As we get the cut going I notice the brown isn't brown isn't blonde, but it's about 2 shades darker (whoopie...) than it was when I came in. The cut looked all right, nothing spectacular but acceptable, by the time she was done. Now we have not even reached the worst part. THE WHOLE TIME THIS IS HAPPENING..... instead of paying any attention to what the stylists are doing, the owner is damn near standing on a soap box telling the ENTIRE salon about his son's teeny-bopper band that plays backup for Selena Gomez. DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW MANY TIMES I HAD TO HEAR ABOUT JUSTIN BIEBER AND HOW HE IS JEALOUS OF THIS GUYS SON AND CRAP?!....... I mean really, loud enough so every single person in the place basically had to listen to the story because it was going to be hard for them to carry on their own conversation. HE ACTUALLY TOOK A MAGAZINE FROM A CUSTOMER because it had a copy of a story that kind of mentions his son. Instead of looking at the fact that AT LEAST the girl who was working on me was breaking about a dozen basic rules... that all of the stylists were on and off their phones the entire time they were handling clients, that hair was being swept into VISIBLE PILES for later instead of being actually picked up... he was completely harshing my mellow. D: Additionally, 3 days after my cut my color had all but washed out and no matter where the part was split the bob didn't lie even and looked like a hack job. NOT TO MENTION I made out a check to Hair Zone (as I was not advised, on the website or by my stylist otherwise) and the owner would not cash it for the contracted employee WHO DOESN'T LIVE IN SAN DIEGO so I had to wait a whole week and try and match my schedule up again to take her another check AND SHE DID NOT RETURN THE FIRST CHECK SO I HAD TO PAY A STOP PAYMENT. I understand that this salon uses the station renting style situation, but that is MORE reason for the owner to be paying attention to what every single girl is doing to make sure it's up to a standard. If everything described above is where the standard is suppose to be set, my mistake. I could have spent half the money at Super Cuts and probably would have been happier. This salon is overpriced, unprofessional, dingy, and straight up completely off the mark. read more

I'm giving this place five stars because it's worth five stars! However, there is one hair stylist named Hannah Cunningham that works two stations down from my hair stylist....Cal Schafer. My hair apts used to be enjoyable and fun, listening to music and chatting with everyone until now. I'm so fed up with every time I come in to get my hair done, ALL I HEAR IS HER!! All she talks about is herself!! First it was all about her wedding and her dumb dogs, the next time I came in thank god she wasn't here and the last couple times it's been a horrible experience! Im now back at the hair zone getting my hair done and all I can hear is her and her talking about herself and her baby and more her!!!! I hope she reads this and realizes how annoying she is! The last two hours of my apt I have listened to her talk over her customers and everyone else in the room! People around me are even talking about how annoying she is!! I am requesting all of the rest of my apts to be scheduled when she is not working. This sucks because I work all the time and can only come at certain times. I highly recommend this place and especially recommend my hair guy Cal. Just try to book your apts when this stylist isn't working, so you can have a good and relaxing experience! read more

Lida has cut and colored my hair twice now, once with highlights, once without. I've received tons of compliments both times. She's super organized and has been very accommodating to my schedule. Lida also cuts uses hot scissors, a technique that promotes hair growth and less split ends. I highly recommend Lida! read more

Unfortunate that Sarah had a bad experience with one of the girls. I haven't ever been to anyone there but Geoff, but I love him! I have referred so many co-workers, even my mother-in-law. I have really long, thick hair, and I have always been charged more by other stylists for that reason. For highlights and a trim, it's never been more than $65. Amazing! He is also one of the fastest stylists I've ever been to - 1.5 - 2 hours for everything, and with how long / thick my hair is I am used to at least 2.5 - 3 hours. The decor and environment might be too informal for some people, but I would recommend it (and specifically Geoff) to anyone. read more

Needed repair and color...got recommendation for Cal and very happy with result. I was kinda wondering what I was getting into as I pulled into the shopping plaza since. the salon is surrounded by thrift shops and probably pawn shop...looked a little low-rent...but recommendation came from good friend with beautiful hair color, cut and texture. I passed through the doors with drum set, old piano and guitars hanging from ceiling. It's not a chic spa setting. After discussion with Cal, he went into back and mixed the dead-on strawberry blond I needed for roots. Really impressed. Layered cut was expert. Treatment to close porous hair- perfect. Brianna Mckee is hands down the best hairstylist there!! Let me start with the fact that i have psoriasis and she was completely willing to work with my sensitive skin. She made me feel very comfortable, which was a major plus. I went in with hair down to the middle of my back and I knew that i wanted to cut it pretty short, but wasn't positive with how short. She cut it once and i decided that i wanted it shorter and she was more than happy to take the time to recut it.
