This is my third time at Hair Throne, and my third great experience! The previous two times, I saw Amanda (who is extremely talented), but today my appointment was with Anthony, and I am thrilled with the results of my balayage. The staff here is extremely nice and professional, and take their time consulting with you before beginning the service. I recommend that you don't make plans for immediately after your appointment and expect for it to run over the allotted time (mine ran more than an hour over today), but the time commitment is absolutely worth the end result. $1008.00 not including tip. What could I have possibly done to my hair for it to cost this much? Balayage (on virgin hair) and a hair cut that didn't take more than 5 minutes. So let's start from the beginning. Making the appointment I was told I had to pay $325 (50%) of the service upfront. Day of the appointment I'm sitting in the lobby with no one in the reception area for about 20 minutes until a nice blonde girl walks in and asks if I've been helped. I tell her I have an appointment with Sakura. She lets them know and Sakura's assistant comes to get me (such a sweet girl throughout this whole process.) I meet Sakura and this is exactly when things started to go down south. Since this was my first time dying my hair I showed her inspo photos and explained to her I was very anxious since it was my first time. Her response was "if you're going to be anxious then I don't want to do your hair, it's supposed to be fun and I want to have fun.. not have you making me anxious" she then proceeded to say "if you have a bad reaction and your hair falls out or if you don't like it.. then we cut it all off.. it's not a big deal." Well, it is a big deal considering I take such good care of my hair and it has taken me years to get it to such great length. Her attitude, her eye rolls, and entire demeanor should have been the red flag waving at me to run out of that place. Also, I promise you, I was being so kind and vulnerable with her that her reaction made my eyes tear up. Sakura specified to me she likes to cut hair while it's dry. Yet, she started dying my hair first and telling me it probably be a little bit more expensive because of the length of my hair and her having to use more product. If that was the case, wouldn't the right thing to do is cut my hair first so that you use less formula when dying it? I don't have a lot of hair, I just have very long hair. But it was her way and she kept applying the dye. In yhe middle of all of this I used her fan that had a panda on it and mentioned how much I love pandas, and she tells me.. "ok you don't need to be so exaggerative about the panda" Then her and her assistant were talking to me about a song, Sakura said she forgot the lyrics.. so I played it on my phone and after 30 seconds she yells at me to turn it off. Everyone stays quiet and I'm literally so uncomfortable at this point, I don't say another word. While her assistant begins to wash my hair, the other hairdresser (blonde girl) starts talking about music and was so kind and welcoming, I started to wish she was my hairdresser instead. I feel like that's the type of relationship you should have with your hairstylist. Now it's time to cut my hair. Naturally I was nervous to cut it after so long, but I was smiling when I told Sakura "oh god here we go".. the minute I said that, she stepped back and with an angry/irritated/sarcastic tone and red face she replied " I don't have to cut your hair..you have an issue? You're too scared? I don't have to cut it." At this point she was really testing my patience. She ended up cutting my hair, but not in the way I asked her, though I was so tired of her entitled attitude towards me that I didn't say a word. She then took out the curler and started waving my hair for her tik tok account and even asked me to fix my makeup for her page. She took pictures, videos, made me pose in different positions. Then the bill: $683 on top of the $325 I had already paid. She charged for extra product which she wouldn't have used if she cut my hair first. $125 for a 5 minute hair trim. She charged me for the blow dry which I never asked for and for curling my hair that she did for her own tik tok/ instagram page. Did my hair come out nice? YES, but was it worth that price and the awful treatment I endured during the entire 6 hours that I was there? ABSOLUTELY NOT. After calling all of my friends who own salons in different states and telling them that I was charged over a thousand dollars for my hair, and realizing I was completely taken advantage of, I cried for hours. On top of it, she treated me like absolute shit.. didn't even offer me a damn cup of water. It was my first and worst experience. If you're going to come here, and you're nervous about making the change and you want a kind an empathetic hairstylist that you can enjoy the experience with.. please choose anyone but Sakura. read more

As much as I would love to gatekeep - this is the best salon in NYC. I've been coming here since 2019 before I moved to the city and have been consistently seeing Lizzy for my cut since I decided to try bangs in 2020. I don't even have to tell her what I want anymore - she understands my dream hair and I leave the chair with it every time. Now I can't even imagine myself without bangs and the style she graces me with and run to book an apt the second I see them growing out. She makes me feel so sexy and confident and I've never gotten more compliments by (guys & gals) on my hair. I tried to make an appointment and was paired with a stylist who doesn't do the work I'd like to get done. The person who made my appointment was rushing me and very rude and didn't ask for reference photos, when he told me the stylist I expressed my concern that i didn't see work on her page that identified with my goals and he assured me she could do it. On the day of the appt, I asked if I could move my appointment with someone else who does work similar to what I'd like, I knew there'd be a charge but I didn't know they would be charging me the entire total of the appointment. Once they texted me that I got ready to head over then I was sent a receipt for $418 when I was willing to go and get a more basic service done while waiting for a preferred stylist for coloring. Do not waste your time and money coming here ! I came here based on amazing reviews and beautiful pictures. Michael was my chosen hairstylist. I wanted a beautiful honey balayage, with cooler tones as opposed to the orangey tones brunettes usually end up with. After explaining my goals to Michael, he made me feel extremely confident that he could do the job. The whole process of bleaching and toning took about 4 hours. 4 hours in which I was treated poorly with Michael making me go up and down and switching chairs as clearly the salon was overbooked. So here I was with a full head of foils being dragged around up and down flights of stairs so Michael could check my hair and wash off. Once he washed off the bleach and did the toning, to my absolute horror, my highlights were silver !!!! He had aged me 20 years and I was horrified. He said " isn't it gorgeous?! " to which I responded " omg absolutely not I did not want silver highlights!! " He proceeded to say " you're right let's warm the highlights up " Another 30 minutes later, I was sick to my stomach to see absolutely no difference to the hair I came in with, the highlights were now not visible. After spending a total of 6 hours at this salon, I did not have it in me to to try to lighten up again. I was not given a discount for my hair goals not being met whatsoever. I went home $500 poorer with completely fried hair that looked the exact same as it did when I walked in. 0/10 experience!!! read more

I was lucky to snag a last minute appointment with Massi. I had gotten my hair done here before with Emily (full highlight) and Amanda (toner), both very talented, but had been seeing the great work Massi had posted on Instagram so wanted to give her a try. Best decision!! I originally came in for a partial highlight since I wanted to break up the darkness higher up on my hair. Massi knew exactly what I wanted and also gave her input on lowlights for the bottom half of my hair for more dimension. I'm so glad she noticed the difference it would make because it came out amazing!! My hair now has more dimension and looks like that expensive brunette look, but still had lightness. She told me that she didn't understand why I was upset because she did what I asked (I didn't ask to sit in a salon for 5 hours to have my blonde highlights look orange and come back to put it to same color as I had before I came in, bacK to square one ?) Here with an extremely conflicted review-- I'm happy with how my hair looks, but I have to say that the service unexpectedly lacking in a way I've never experienced before when paying upwards of $360 for a hair appointment. I live in Boston and booked a foilayage with Bianca almost 3 months in advance. I'm obsessive about hair and after spending hours pouring over various salons in New York and deciding I wanted to make the trip, I was so excited to get my hair done at Hair Throne. Bianca was 10 minutes late, which was totally fine because the front desk let me know. Not sure if it was just a difficult early morning, but right from the beginning we had a really brisk introduction and zoomed through the consultation in less than 2 minutes. After doing the initial application, Bianca took another client and from that point didn't touch my hair again. Her assistant took over (who still did a good job), occasionally getting instructions from 10 feet away. Bianca did touch base at the end to check that I liked my hair-- I really do! The only thing I'm disappointed with hair wise is that I got a ton of breakage at the top of my head from having my hair roughly brushed through several times while wet after being bleached. read more

It's practically summer, so I was looking for a hair color change. After reading the reviews and checking out their IG page, I decided to make an appointment with this place. My hair is naturally very dark, but I have been coloring it for years, going super blond and then back again, many times. I wanted to go blonder this time around, and I made an appointment with Mallorie. Overall, the session was great. My hair turned out better than I imagined, and Mallorie is super sweet and really knows her way around getting dark hair to light. It took roughly 3 hours or so, which was shorter than I originally thought. She was great the entire time and even gave me a cup of complimentary coffee (with oat milk!). The total service cost was $360, which is a little more than I usually spend on color, but since I was going light, I wanted to go somewhere that had experience in that area. The only reason I am giving this place 4 stars instead of 5 was the receptionist. The receptionist is the first person you generally interact with when you enter the salon. I received a very lukewarm, if not cold, interaction with her. She acted very distant and extremely annoyed that 1) I came in that day, and that 2) I asked her where Mallorie's chair was because I've never been there before and I didn't know my way around. But thankfully, Mallorie was great and gave me exactly what I wanted. I am still on the fence about making this place my regular, but I would not hesitate to recommend Mallorie. read more

Don't see Bianca, she went completely against my inspo and left my hair with yellow streaks, not the rich brunette balayage I wanted. I left dissatisfied but still tipped graciously and called the next day upset(as I had expressed the night before) about the results to see if we could schedule a touch-up/change. I have been searching and searching for someone who specializes lightening dark hair, as I've had nightmare experiences before! Finally found Sakura Ito and feel soooo happy with my hair! ANYWAY now to my annoying experienceWent to Anastasia a week or two ago and the shady price gouging really turned me off. I booked for a $120 gloss (inflated compared to the other girls here) and a $70 dusting because she was the only one available the day I needed it. I am all for people making their own prices no matter how good or bad they are but what was shady is asking me "Do you want to leave with dry hair?" I visited Hair Throne for the first time (wanted to support black owned business) and booked an appointment with Sakura who is an absolute gem! Sakura transformed my hair and left me feeling ah-mazing. I am writing this review 6 months later and I'm still in love with my hair. I initially scheduled a full balayage and trusted her vision so much that I ended up getting a haircut and a root touchup all at once. I've never loved my hair color so much - Mykel KILLED IT. She was so professional, communicative, and PRECISE. I've been to so many salons all over NYC for balayage, but I've never had such an overall positive experience with such a great outcome. It's clear that she really knows what she is doing and is very talented. Something I have to call out after testing out so many different salons in NYC - Hair Throne's diversity and inclusivity. Being Latina, it can more often times than not be really intimidating and difficult to find a salon / stylist that makes you feel comfortable sitting in their chair (I've legit been turned away from a very notable salon in nyc for not having confidence in working with my hair type, which is soooo ridiculous). From my 2 experiences so far at Hair Throne (first was a tone with Mallorie, who was also amazing) there wasn't a second that I ever felt like I could potentially walk away unhappy with the result. Also - love how the stylists consult with each other and bounce off ideas / collaborate. Personally, hearing the stylist think out loud and explain their process makes me way more comfortable. I am speechless!!! It has been years since I've had my hair lightened and I almost forgot how great it feels to have brightness on my head considering how dark my natural color is. I worked with the stylist Marissa and I CAN ONLY SAY 10/100000. She is amazingly talented, great customer service, attentive, cares about what you want to achieve and aiming to her creative perfection. I gave her a little direction and delivered beyond measure and my hair feels amazing!!! Aside from how beautiful, kind, personable soul the salon is beautiful, chic, modern, playful, clean, great music and staff is very friendly.
