I went into this salon asking very clearly for soft, ash brown highlights that were well blended and natural-looking. Instead, I walked out with chunky, uneven highlights that turned out bright orange and brassy, the complete opposite of what I requested. The blending was poorly done, with harsh lines that made the color look patchy and unprofessional. This was extremely disappointing, especially after explaining and showing reference photos of the look I wanted. I left feeling frustrated and unhappy with the result, and now I'm stuck having to fix damage and color that never should have happened in the first place. read more

This is their new location which is super close to me. Looks like it was a house before and they remodeled it as a hair salon. They did really well with the setup. It's clean and modern and the place has a really nice curb appeal. Hye Young is the young lady that does my keratin treatment and she's always so sweet and patient with me. I have really thick hair so the process can be quite lengthy. This is my second time having this treatment done to my hair and this time it came out pretty close to perfect. Since my hair is super thick and curly, it didn't quite take the first time but it did last a while for what it was worth. I do not go anywhere else for a magic straight perm. I've been coming to Helen for a straight perm every year since 2004. I had to take a break for a few years due to pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding, and repeat for 2nd baby and during that time, it was miserable. I hate my natural wavy chaotic hair. Long or short, it's unmanageable. The minute i was done nursing, I came straight here. To test how AMAZING my newly straightened hair was, i went to hawaii 2 weeks later where it's obviously VERY humid. I went surfing, swimming, whatever and I did not have to do ANYTHING with my hair. just wash, condition, towel dry and it was superrrrrrrrr straight :D never blow dried it. didn't even bring an iron! and the greatest reason is the price. It is so affordable you won't believe it. I always end up tipping heavily bc i love their work and the price is so reasonable. I have to admit i asked another hair salon in irvine how much they would charge for my hair (bc i hate leaving the irvine bubble) and it was literally double. I don't want to pay hundreds more! anywhere else it could be triple. Since their move, they have a full service salon now. They do nails as well as skin care. The WORST Place EVER! The old lady Gina had color&cut my hair. I showed her picture of what I wanted. Long story short...the result was...She totally messed up my hair with too many layers. Next day, I called the manager to file a complaint. YaeWon Suh(She said she is the manager.)answered & listened my story about yesterday. I didn't want it too short, but my hair was super damaged from before so I wanted to chop off a good portion. She asks and cuts exactly how you want it. I did ask her to straighten my hair instead of curling it because I wanted to make sure the cut was even. Not sure if it gets busier on weekends, but weekdays were pretty open. This salon was recommended to me by a trusted friend, and I have had great experiences here! While I was getting my hair done, they offered me coffee/tea, which was a nice touch. Hye Young has permed my hair twice now and she did a fantastic job. I wanted large waves to add volume to my naturally straight and fine tresses. My hair was still healthy after the perm and the waves lasted for about 5 months. It made styling my hair much easier! I also got a trim each time and it looked nice. The prices are very reasonable, too. Since I made an appointment, there wasn't a wait time. It helped that I made my appointments pretty early. This was my first time to this salon. I only came here because my mother in law had made appointments (for both hair and makeup) for myself, her, my sister-in-law and my daughter for a family photo shoot. Some of the workers were friendly and did a good enough job on my daughter's hair and our makeup.... BUT the girl who worked on my hair (Hye Young? I am actually unsure if she is even licensed...she has shoulder length straight black hair and wears black square rim glasses...very quiet and not very friendly) BURNT my face. First of all, I feel like it really requires a HIGH level of incompetence to burn someone's face while curling their hair for a very simple hairdo....Secondly, once she burnt my face - as in the hot iron touched the side of my face - she did not immediately apologize. In fact, after I yelped out in pain, she continued to curl my hair as if nothing had happened. At which point, I started telling her that her response was absolutely inadequate and that she better hope my face does not turn into a blister. She then apologized meekly and I had a hoard of other workers coming to spray aloe vera on my face...but I now have a purple mark on my face and have been looking online to even see if this salon is certified. If you check on the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology site (http://www.barbercosmo.ca.gov/) IF Hair Salon does not even come up. Scarily enough, neither does the owner of the salon (YaeWon Suh). If the owner isn't even licensed, I already know that the incompetent girl in the glasses who worked on my hair is CLEARLY not licensed...and clearly not competent enough to curl someone's hair without touching their face with the curling iron. I am trying to see how else I can make a formal complaint against this salon. I would say that the girl who worked on my hair should have her license revoked...except that she's not even licensed!!! In fact, I am not even sure how IF Hair Salon is legal and open with unlicensed workers when the California Department of Consumer Affairs (http://www.dca.ca.gov/publications/barbercosmo_guide.shtml) states that: Anyone who provides hairdressing and styling, haircutting, shaving, manicuring, removing unwanted hair, skin care, and the application of cosmetics for a fee must be licensed by the Board. To become licensed, individuals must complete an approved amount of coursework and practical training and pass a national written and hands-on exam. After years of going to hair salons, never in a million years would I ever even have fathomed that I would get my face burnt while getting my hair curled. I couldn't even fathom that level of incompetence. So this is my warning to all of you... DO NOT SET FOOT in this unlicensed incompetent salon. It's not just about hair preference or customers dissatisfaction...clearly, the level of incompetence at this salon is so high that it is a safety hazard. If you don't heed this warning, then RUN the other way when you see the girl with the black rim glasses. It was my fault for just walking into a random place to get a cut. My baby kept pulling on the hair so I decided to go drastic at some random place near the in-laws house. The first time, the haircut was fine and after two weeks it needed maintaining but never returned until several months later after Jung Hee said she would give me a good deal for the straight perm. I normally don't go anywhere to get my perm done by anyone but my usual hair dresser in ktown but it was a bit hard to make it out there with a young baby and a toddler around. I made the appointment with Jung hee and hoped for the best. At first, she was busy with different clients while I was there. Her style of doing the perm was different than what I was used to. It was literally a five hour ordeal for me to get magic perm done but it was only three hours. She only straightened it once and in my previous experience it was done twice. It came out nice but after few days it was fading and hair started becoming brittle and wavy. I was told that she might have done a keratin treatment instead of a magic perm. Anyways, not happy with the results even though I got it done cheaper but if it didn't come out right I didn't really get a deal. Will not stray from my stylist again to get my magic perm done. Also, this place is so dusty! There is seriously layers and clumps of dust bunnies every where. read more

Made appointment for 11:30 but waited more than 30 min after my hair was washed for her to get to me The lady who washed my hair was awful...felt like she was just watering my head and not washing my hair ..and she barely even touched my scalp the entire time..very mindless and got water into both my ears few times Trim was ok, decent and nothing spectacular, no different than a $20 trim at fantastic Sam's She didn't really know how to handle or blow dry my hair that was previously digitally permed But for if price it was ok, don't think I'll be coming back. When I first came here I got a hair cut by Helen. Usually I get very nervous when it comes to getting my hair cut. Helen speaks little English and I speak very little Korean. But if you use basic hair vocabulary like "trim, shoulder length, bang trim" they do understand after all, they do this for a living. I loved my hair cut. She cut it exactly how I told her too (past the shoulder) and gave me a bang trim which I was very much satisfied with. Usually, I have to fix and re-cut my bangs after I get home. The second time I went, I got a loose curl perm and straight permed my bangs- again by Helen. She listens to what you want while doing what she thinks is best. I've been to some salons that ignore what you want and just do what they want to do and in the end, you hate the final product. The whole process took about 2 hours which was a lot shorter than I thought. I love the way my hair turned out. Perm will last for about 4 months? We'll see... She didn't style my hair in the end but left it natural with the curls. Final product came out to about $100 (I can't recall exactly). read more

I've been coming here since 2004 and never stopped. i ALWAYS get my straight perm here. the price is unbelievable compared to what you see advertised as "specials" from elsewhere. i think you can be as conversational as you want. sometimes i am not in the mood to really talk. other times, i want to ask about their life experiences. i love when helen (the owner) takes care of my hair but if things are too busy and someone else has to do it, she still always oversees the job. As for the quality of the straight perm, it''s perfect everytime. it lasts forever (but you know the new hair that grows out is not going to have the straightness since it's new from the roots). i dont get split ends. it's never burnt. read more

Helen C is a miracle worker. Most hair dressers don't know what to do with my naturally curly asian hair; the asian fro. Helen C not only thinks about cut and style, but also accounts for texture, face shape, and maintenance. Honestly, some of my best cuts, I simply told her to do what she thinks is best. Cutting my hair is a big deal because I only cut it once a year. I walked into If Hair Studio (without an appt) to get a cut and was promptly ushered to get my hair washed. The stylists here all know what they're doing and since it's a Korean salon, the styles are more modern, and they just make you look cooler and more confident! Haircut: I asked for noticeable layers and side sweeping bangs. The stylist quickly confirmed and totally knew what I wanted and how she was going to get it done. So sad to hear that Cindy left. She was mine and my mother's usual hairstylist. I usually come here for my color and cut because they do very good deep red colors (the other ones I dunno cause I have only gotten my hair done red here). This is a Korean salon but the stylists do speak a little English, I've seen non-Korean customers in the salon come in and leave satisfied, so the language barrier is not an issue. Just know what you want. I am Korean so the language thing is not a problem for me, I guess I kind of have an upper hand at this salon, despite my rather scary outward look (I have piercings on my face which I guess are intimidating especially to these two Korean girls around college-age that were staring at me). Today I went in for a cut but decided to get my usual red color as well. Walked in, only a few stylists were working today so I waited about 10 minutes before I got seated and my dye was prepared for me. Gina, an older lady, was a new hairstylist I hadn't seen (I've been going here for almost three years) but she was the first person to cut my hair EXACTLY as I wanted it. I usually get the Japanese style "shaggy cut" and even Cindy was unable to perfectly get what I wanted. Gina and I had a few short conversations about hair color and she asked about my tattoos I have behind my ears. Generally very quiet, usually the only things you hear is the TV that is usually playing a Korean comedy or variety sketch show, or some of the other patrons and stylists chatting away. It never gets too noisy though. $100 for the color and cut w/o tip but this is because my hair is long :) If you like Japanese-style cuts with lots of dramatic layers and an easy going hairstylist who will do exactly what you want you should definitely make an appointment with Gina. Been coming here for 5 years now and so far my favorite place to get my hair done the way I want it. Language is a barrier. They do try to communicate with you no matter what tho. Just show them a photo of any hairstyles and they will do exactly what's on the picture. For $30 they shampoo and conditioned, cut and style your hair.. That's pretty good to me! And I'm always pleased with the results. I recommend Jun if you're looking for a great hairstylist. But if shes not around, I think everyone else is very competent with their job.. Even when they get busy I'm never waiting more than 15 minutes without an appointment, though making one will certainly help. i've known the owner of this place for about 10 yrs ever since she used to work out in LA. I haven't let anyone else cut my hair since then. trim/hair cuts are about $35 and they wash and blow dry your hair too... unlike some american places that charge extra to blow dry! although most people here speak only korean, i think it's an awesome hair salon because they don't over charge and the people are pretty up to date with the trend. hair cut+highlights+dye i only get charged about $80-$100 total. read more
