I Yelped around, found ZenJen's, decided to give her a try despite the lack of reviews. Smart move - really glad I did! Jen was on time, very friendly and personable, and her studio was immaculate. Her giant chair was almost as cool as Dr. Evil's, and her personality was lovely. We talked a bit about the incredible sun damage on my face and she suggested I try some of her lavender jojoba facial serum. I wasn't too keen on purchasing anymore skin products but I was totally delighted when she offered to let me have a vial as her gift! I work in a very low humidity "office" at 37,000 feet in the sky so my skin gets dry no matter how much water I drink. Jen offered me the serum if I'd try it out in my harsh work environment for a few months and give her feedback. More than fair trade! I'm really, really happy with Jen's jojoba lavender facial serum. It sits in my flight bag next to my chair on the jet and I use it every single flight. My regimen in the morning is to put on my usual 70 SPF facial creme, and while we're boarding up the first flight of the day I add a few drops of the delicious smelling lavender oil to my face and rub it in. Even on the long trans-con and trans-oceanic flights I never have to reapply! My face smells nice, is hydrated and protected from the super dry onboard air, and I've noticed the little scaly patch on the side of my nose seems not so scaly since I've been using Jen's serum. Thankfully it's a large bottle (at one ounce) and a little of the serum goes a long way! A few of the guys with whom I've flown asked where they could get some for their wives because I rave about it and it smells so nice, so I gave them Jen's website for future purchases. Jen's generosity extended past her yummy facial serum -- she also gifted me with a stick of her special honey lip balm. It's been my obsessive favorite, going with me everywhere, and I was devastated to realize that I neglected to remove it from the front pocket of my white uniform shirt after my latest trip. Unfortunately it spent time in both the washer and the dryer and breathed its last breath. Sadly it's lovely buttery hue trashed my shirt, but I'm most bummed that I lost my favorite creamy lip balm. Thankfully she sells all her hand-made products both in her cute shop and via her online store (www.ZenJens.com)! Next time I layover in PDX I'll definitely schedule another service with Jen, starting with a facial and fuzz wax! Try her -- your skin will high-five you!

So, as Teko's website noted, I called to inquire about openings for new clients and available services/offerings. Teko told me that her first-time consultation was a flat $200. When I asked what that typically included, she started to become, what felt like, frustrated. Finally, she indicated that it would consist of whatever she wanted it to include/whatever my skin needed at the time. I tried to understand what this meant (i.e., a possibility of a facial, LED treatment, etc.); when I asked more clarifying questions about her menu of services, she said she didn't want to tell me. This didn't feel very clear, so I asked another question to gain some clarity. (For example, does she even offer facials and carry the Epionce line?) Teko replied that she had never had anyone talk to her like this before and that it made her uncomfortable. And, by talking to her like "this," I assume she means "asking questions"? The more she refused to answer my questions, the more confused I became, and the cycle continued. All up, she said she is in high demand, only takes referrals, that her reputation precedes her, and that I should just trust that she will take great care of my skin. I explained that I was trying to get to know her and her offerings and didn't intend to offend or upset her. To this, she replied that I was not a good fit for a client because I didn't trust her, which made her uncomfortable. That she is too busy to have time for these types of phone conversations. Then, why do you ask new clients to call you? While it's terrific that Teko wants to do everything she can to protect the skin, it feels like she forgets there is a person behind it. And, that trust is also earned. My advice? Find someone else who will treat you with respect and understanding (and make you feel comfortable) in the same way she expects it returned.
