Randomly walked by Hachi Kare-Ya and made a mental note to check them out. They specialize in Japanese curry katsu.
We dropped in on a busy Thursday evening (9:00pm). There's a dozen seats plus four high chairs for solo diners. One small table outside. Service was quick and efficient; food came out within 10 minutes.
Menu is short and sweet; appetizers, katsu (cutlet) and cheesecake. Cool that they have their own shop (Basuku) that makes it.
- Cha de cevada (1,50€) - barely detected any Japanese barley flavour. Skip it.
- Caril de tonkatsu (12,50€) - pork was a touch dry but the breading was excellent. Satisfying crunch. The curry sauce was surprisingly good. Plenty of rice but the omurice wasn't in the traditional Japanese style. Egg lacked that soft, fluffy texture.
- Caril de torikatsu (10,00€) - chicken, all dark meat, was delicious. Better than the pork.
HK-Y's katsu was exactly what we were craving while in town. Homey Japanese katsu. read more
