I've been going to Wu Dental for over a decade after a recommendation from a former dental hygienist I met during Jury Duty and have been very satisified. Wu Dental used to have a San Mateo office, I used visit when I used to live in San Mateo but they closed that office during COVID and now only have an office now in Mountain View. Now that I live in Oakland, it hasn't been too much of a hassle to make the hour drive over the past 8 years but now that they no longer take Delta Dental as of 2024, apparently due to the low reimbursement rate, I will likely need to find another dentist. The receptionist did a poor job to non-existent job of explaining that and the impact as it looks like I now have to pay the full uninsured cost up front and then wait for the reimbursement from the insurance company for basic checkups which used to be completely covered and now cost over $100 per visit. I understand that Wu Dental did what they had to do to continue to operate but they could have at least said up front it's going to cost me more out of pocket moving forward for everything especially for basic check up and cleaning visits that were originally covered and will not cost a couple hundred dollars for a year plus significantly higher costs for all other services beyond each 6 month check up. Again, I'd like to stress Wu Dental has great service and expertise, but not practical to continue using them when they no longer take Delta Dental when I have to pay a couple hundred dollars out of pocket for basic services even after reimbursement from insurance now that they are out of network which pretty much means other dental services will not be covered as much or not at all. read more

Been coming here for 2 years. Dr. Wu and his dental hygienist staff have always been on top of my care. I did go to another dentist at first who said I needed deep cleaning and all these other services. I was suspicious of it so I sought Dr. Wu's help who said it wasn't necessary, and this was supported by another dentist's opinion I used to see back when I lived in Seattle. Scheduling in his office has been easy and even during the time I didn't have dental coverage, his out of pocket fee for a regular cleaning wasn't bad at all. Definitely a disaster!! I had done an invisalign there. Wu sharpened my teeth so much that he couldn't close the gap at all. So the result is much worse than before ! People should avid this and find a professional orthodontist ! This treatment lasted more than two years. And I knew he didn't know what to do to fix it. First of all, I want to be clear: This 1-start rating is for the Front desk receptionist (I wanted to call "lady", but she does not deserve it)!!! Dr. Wu and other dental assistants are super nice and professional. Dr. Wu, if you are checking Yelp reviews regularly, please let go of this weird, unreasonable, arrogant, unsympathetic, rude employee, you've lost me as a patient because of her! I've never been so angry about any service people in my life. It's been several times with her and I've had enough. 1st time I went for a wisdom teeth removal consultation, I called out of curtesy to let the doctor know that I may be late for 10 minutes because I don't have a printer at home so I need to go to UPS and print out the 1st-time patient form for their request (yes, they don't have an online system). She just told me that no late is allowed and any cancellation/rescheduling will incur $50 penalty. I explained the reason and it should be fine within my 30-min appointment since it'll only take maybe 5-minutes to check. She laughed (yes, you see it right, she literally laughed at me in the phone that I don't even have a printer at home) . She didn't care at all and kept saying it's scheduled and I cannot be late. 2nd time I went 15 minutes early for the appointment, and she said I was scheduled at 4pm instead of 3pm, WTF, I knew my appointment was 3pm and I got a message reminder just about 2 hours ago! Finally she found it was her mistake and my appointment was indeed 3pm. However, no explanation no apology. 3rd time I scheduled an appointment with Dr. Wu about 2.5 months ago. But about 1.5 day before the appointment, I found there is a conflicting work meeting on my calendar and I called to reschedule. She said no, it's already scheduled. WTF, it was 2.5 months ago! I already called more than 24 hours before the appointment to reschedule. What did she say? She said they need at least 48 hours. Any cancellation or rescheduling will charge me $50 penalty. Not reasonable at all, and her voice is full of disparagement. Finally I conceded and told her "let me see if I can reschedule my work meeting and will let you know if I have to cancel it". So I tried to move my meetings for the appointment (just didn't want to waste $50 and reschedule with Dr. Wu because he's busy). I then called the office the next day morning (the appointment was supposed to be in the afternoon) just to notice them that I will come. You know what happened? She said she's already canceled my appointment since I didn't call her back to confirm early enough. She just canceled my appointment without even letting me know it !!! WTF, she's outrageous! I don't even want to mention that in the first visit, she charged me full amount of the consultation fee even I showed her that my insurance will cover 100%. Later after she got my insurance's payment, she only kept my money as CREDIT in their clinic, not as REFUND in a check. I'm still in the office waiting for my mom to finish up. My first appointment went quite smooth today. They're efficient and Dr. Wu is very caring and knowledgeable. The older Filipino lady at the front desk reminds me of my grandma. So sweet! The younger lady, Nueva, I think (or something like that) is nice as well but when she flosses it hurts! The again, I'm probably not used to it because I never floss. Haha! Also when I first arrived, I was a little turned off by the lack of a nice ambiance, but the dental care is more important, in my opinion. Just when I thought I finally found a permanent dentist in San Mateo, I came to the realization that Dr. Wu and his practice just wants your money. I had a super nice female dentist clean my teeth (only reason for that extra star) and she recommended that I remove my bottom wire retainer. I was told it would be an easy operation (the wire is only attached to two teeth) but when I went to book my appointment to get the wire removed + make a set of plastic retainers, I was set back by their prices. Dr. Wu wanted to charge my insurance $74 for the wire removal + $1260 for just a single set of retainers. I called around other dentistries and all of them charge less than half of Dr. Wu's ridiculous rates. They just want your insurance money. Despite having good insurance rates, I refuse to support such a greedy practice. UPDATE: I uploaded the single pager with the quotes they gave me. My wife and I have been coming to Dr. Wu for about 4 years. He and his staff are wonderful, very friendly and always make us feel comfortable. I highly recommend Dr. Wu and his associates for their courtesy and professionalism. If I was rating the care we received, it would be 5 stars. However, like another reviewer on Yelp, we had a billing issue that we attempted to resolve. After corresponding with Jenny over a $36 dispute that insurance didn't cover (a 5 minute "visit" for my less than 2 year old son to make him more comfortable around dentists), it became clear that the practice (or Jenny) cares more about billing patients than creating long term relationships with them. For this reason alone, will reluctantly be finding another dental practice to work with after paying the disputed bill. Losing a customer with a growing family (2 adults and 2 children under 2 years old) over a $36 dispute seems very shortsighted, but it's their decision, not ours. read more

10 stars. What fantastic staff and a fantastic dental. I can't recommend them enough. I've had maybe five dentists in my life, and never liked any of them. The hygienists were always rough and unapologetic, and the dentists gave me guilt trips every time I went in. I've NEVER had a cavity, but one dentist told me at 15 "you'll be lucky to have any teeth at 30." Well I'm 28 and have all my straight white teeth and still no cavities, thank you very much! But back to the Wu office. The hygienist Sara was really friendly and gave me the best, most thorough, least painful cleaning I've ever had. Seriously, I was almost falling asleep during the cleaning, in stark contrast to gripping the chair arm rests for dear life, like I usually do! Doctor Wu came in after the cleaning to chat about my teeth, discussed some possible future problems but essentially said "If your teeth aren't hurting you, we'll leave them alone for now." He gave me a lot of good information and tips for maintaining my teeth, answered all my questions, shook my hand, and sent me on my way. If only I'd found them sooner! Okay, so I've had over 10 dentists in my lifetime (4 in the Bay Area) as I have moved around quite a bit. Dr. Wu is by far the best dentist that I have ever had. He will spend as much time as you want to talk about any issues. He will never rush you, and he will explain everything in a clear manner. The dental assistants here are much better too. They actually spend a decent amount of time cleaning your teeth. I've had plenty of bad experiences where dental assistants are rushed, not thorough and want to get you out as soon as possible. Also, what i like is that they file for pre-authorization (if you need additional dental work) and determine all your dental benefits before you do any procedures. So you know exactly what you're paying. Everybody here is pleasant and it doesn't feel like a factory where they're just out to get your money. Dr. Wu runs a very honest practice. I live in San Francisco and I drive down here specifically to get my dental cleaning done here. You wouldn't believe how hard it is to find a good dentist in the Bay Area. I love Dr. Wu. I started going to him when he was part of a dental practice in Palo Alto, and now he has his own practice in San Mateo. His new location is much closer to me, but I was willing to travel, because he's so great. His office is in a very convenient location, near El Camino Real and Hwy 92. His office hours are also very convenient, and I never have a problem getting an appointment at a time that works for me. He's one of the preferred providers for my dental insurance, which is fantastic, because my company changed providers not too long ago and I figured I'd have to pay extra so I could stay with him. Dr. Wu and everyone in his office are so nice. I also appreciate that he's a dentist who doesn't scold you or make you feel bad about maybe not flossing as much as you should or having longer times in between appointments as you should. Before I started seeing him, it had been over 6 years since I had been to the dentist, and I had worked up something of a phobia...but here I am, still cavity free, with healthy teeth and a white smile to boot. This is my first time get so angry and want to give a review in public. This low rating is for the lady in front desk! I was referred by my colleague here. I first came to Dr. Wu for teeth wash and annual check. He found I still have 3 wisdom teeth not removed and suggest me to do the extraction. I was a little hesitate at first, but Dr. Wu said all my teeth were visible and out of gum, the extraction will be very simple and fast. I also checked the lady in front desk with the fee. She said my insurance is good and I only need to pay 10% copay for simple extraction. That made me make up my mind to do remove the wisdom teeth. I paid at there and she said that's all the fee I need to pay. But I received another billing ask me to pay $150 MORE last weekend! I called the office in the morning asked if they made a mistake on the bill. The lady in front desk said she made a wrong estimate on my copay, and I have to pay for 40%, which is in the category of "complex extraction". She didn't explain me what's the difference, refused to update the bill and insist code D7210 is the code for their most simple extraction. The statement said it is surgical removal(code: D7210) which falls to "complex extraction" category. I checked internet about the difference of them, D7210 says "This type of extraction involves cutting the gum tissue and bone, removal of the tooth and closure of the site." Apparently Dr. Wu didn't cut my gum because all my wisdom teeth are out of gum. To be honest, I think Dr. Wu is kind and professional, I want to give him 5 star for the service. BUT!!!!!!!! I have very bad experience with this billing issue and front desk lady, I feel she is not honest and just want to get more money from customer. read more

Simply put...Dr. Wu is the man! He is a super nice guy that will put a smile on your face even if he is drilling away at your teeth. Him, Cleo and the rest of staff actually make the dentist as enjoyable as it possibly can be. I have had many dentist during my 25 year stint on earth and even more cavities. He actually invests in teaching me some tactics to prevent cavities that are beyond traditional advice. I think the most amazing thing during my visits have been that he has had to pull two teeth (wisdom and molar) while I was awake. Neither time did it hurt or swell after (lots of blood though, he's not a magician).
