I've been going to H&R Block for about 18 years now. They are a bit pricey, but their knowledge of all possible tax credits, benefits programs, etc. has more than made up for that. When I calculated my own with turbo tax, the result was substantially higher than what I paid through H&R Block, even after including the cost of paying them to do my taxes. The difference was due to credits I had not been aware of but for which I was qualified. I've worked with about 4 different tax advisors through H&R Block over the years, and I have been quite pleased with all of them. I had a terrible experience working with Marguerite "Margot" Ziperman. Basic details like my birthdate and business name were wrong and not corrected despite multiple requests--it only got fixed after I escalated it to someone else! The actual tax prep felt sloppy and rushed. I was told we'd compare standard vs. itemized deductions, but that didn't happen until I pushed for Margot to do it as she had promised! I also had to follow up to make sure obvious deductions (like my cell phone expenses) were even included--after I had already provided the documentation! They were NOT initially included. Like wtf??? Communication was dismissive and transactional. Getting clear answers or a simple phone call took way more effort than it should have. A supervisor, Erin, called me and acknowledged Margot's mistakes--but the call was a complete waste of time. No fee reduction, just empty apologies and an offer of "pizza" if I find myself in the area. Completely tone-deaf and unprofessional. Lastly, Margot forgot to add the discount I received for my fees, and I had to tell her to add the discount! Complete lack of attention to detail. Overall, this was disorganized, frustrating, and not the level of service you should expect when you're paying for tax preparation. I will not be returning. read more

I've been using H&R block annually for the last six years, and this visit won't stop us. However, we won't touch this particular branch again. Our appointment started late (~15 minutes); no big deal, but it was the smallest issue we had there. The tax-pro was incredibly meek, and we explained we had all of our documents ready to go (.pdf) and ready to be sent via email as we'd done the years prior. She asked us if we had the app; we do! Unfortunately it's a pain to download documents from email to a phone, then find the docs to send them through an app. We asked if the they had an email; they did! Awesome! So; they point to an email on the screen in small font, and tell us to email it there (it wasn't their name, or anyone's name we knew). I asked once or twice how to spell the name on the email since they could see the text better. After my wife and I sent our documents to the email, the tax-pro said "ok, so this is you right?" and pointed to the email. We just sent our documents to a random prior client! THEN they told us in a very quiet to just come back with them in person, while staring at the ground. An absolute waste of half an hour, and now I have to hope a random client doesn't do something with the data we sent them. No apology, no acknowledgement; just boredom and apathy read more

I've done my own taxes ever since I started making money. It is pretty simple really. One W2 form; One 1040 form; realize the Government is taking way too much of my money; then done. Well, this year, things are little more complicated b/c I have 3 W2s, cashed in 401k from one job, buying a condo, etc. So I thought I will go seek professional help, hence, the H & R Block. Made an appointment for 9am, walked in at 8: 57am and walked out at 9:03am. Say what? Did my return take 6 minutes? Did they pull a genie and blink through my return? No. Larry Wilkins, the manager, and "Miss Hill" was there when I walked in. I inquired about being able to get some tax credit for buying a condo this year on THIS year's tax vs. next year, Larry started to laugh. He obnoxiously informed me that I can't claim something I haven't bought. When I informed him that I am settling soon and I was told by another professional that there may be some stipulations to the new tax credit in place making it possible, he became more obnoxious, "how you gonna do that? who told you that?" Look, if I'm misinformed, that is completely ok. I'm not a tax pro and that's why I walked into this place. Had I known everything about taxes, I would do it myself in the first place. As I was walking out he was laughing like someone told him a joke of a life time. Larry is apparently is the manager so talking to the management here will get you belittlement and degrading attitude. read more

I went to the H&R Block on Elliot rd in Greenbelt and in Wheaton and both times it has ben easy and both times I have received discounts. The staff have always been very helpful and informative as well as personable. I avoid mom and pop tax preparers because of a bad experience which prevented me from filing for two years and lost of money. I don' trust my federal information with just any company and I do try to avoid big corporations when I get a chance H&R Block have always taken care of me for half the price of other places. I had a particular complicated tax return and they handled it no problems. Of course each office has their own problems and personalities, my personal experience has always been pleasant. Rude staff who will mock you. You will not be asked if you would like to be called multiple times the following year with "reminders" to come and file your tax return with them, but they will call and harass you none the less. read more

06/08 Half of this is my general gripe with H&R Block as a whole. This is my second appointment with H&R block that for whatever reason they have been unable commit to. I made an appointment for 7:00 a week in advance, came in at 6:20 (40 minutes early) just to ensure that I was at the right place and would be able to be seen. The one employee in the office Lawrence Bleau kindly told to come back closer to my appointment time. He even showed me places I could wait comfortably. I returned 5 minutes before my slot and another customer was in the office. Long story short, my scheduled H&R Block representative decided not to come into work this day, despite his appointment. Since Mr. Bleau's scheduled customers were on time I was unable to be seen. I could have and should have been informed of the last minute absence ahead of time. Mr. Bleau shouldn't have to bear the havoc that his irresponsible co-workers caused. He was doing his job and doing a great job of it there's no reason he should have had to clean up anybody else's mess. No employee should be alone in a tax office to fend for himself. Prospective customers don't go here (or any H&R Block really). Irresponsible staff. read more
