Robin, the receptionist, needs to improve on customer service. I had an appointment with J. Castro, my tax advisor. Which the day of my appointment she couldn't fulfill my request due to being unqualified with any foreign assets. Which she wanted to adjust the appointment onto another advisor. However, the receptionist intervened that no other advisors could take me in due to unavailability. She was adamant on that I need to reschedule, however my reservations should still be fulfilled regardless of my situation. While J. Castro, the tax advisor was trying to be helpful, the receptionist insisted that I can't be helped with my appointment. This is my experience here and I've gone through HR Block for the last 6 years in various areas, so I know what needs to be processed. It's when people think they have some administrative control that think they can run over their advisors. Good help is hard to find, but the first layer of service needs to be improved. I have used these guys for the passed two years and it seems like there is something wrong with their system or something wrong with the training of their staff. I have little faith that my taxes have been done correctly over the last two tax seasons that I always buy the insurance. Between the two times that I have filed one year I didn't owe and this year I do owe. Nothing has changed with my marital status, or employment , or dependents, yet somehow my taxes are not matching up. This year, my tax prep person is chalking it up to if I get money back from my federal, it's okay that I still owe a little on my state. Which to me doesn't make sense.. if last year I didn't owe anything but the this year I do? Something seems sketchy. Now whenever I try to get clarification on the issue it is nearly impossible to get a hold of my tax prep person. I call the office , leave messages, email multiple times with no return. The only time I seem to be able to get a hold of my tax prep person is if I call HR customer service (mainland line) and complain and have to schedule a meeting with my tax prep persons. I know tax season is a busy time for everyone, but I shouldn't have to wait over two weeks to get a response on a question! Finally, after working with my taxes pro since January, she gives it to me to review, pay and sign.. which I do (everything at this point is competed in mid march). Also at this point I'm exhausted on trying to get her to fix my taxes so I don't owe (like how I didn't owe last year) so I just give up and will pay whatever she says I owe to the state. So now that I've signed everything I assume it's going to be submitted . Fast forward a few weeks, no tax submission... now having to go through the headache of trying to contact my tax pro again, she's telling me it's because I need to pay for services again?? No I already gave them $535 for their services what do I need to pay for again?? I sent my receipts and still waiting for a response and still waiting for my taxes to be submitted . Just choose another location (I suggest Windward mall). The value for service verses money is not a priority at the Pearl Kai location. Once you pay them, be aware that for any follow up assistance you may need it will cost you more money. The customer service is abysmal. Read the fine print for their policies. read more

Customer Service is key. I explained to assistant, I had technical taxes and needed to meet with the tax lady. Then I proceeded to scheduled my appointment on the phone to meet with the tax lady. A few days later, upon arrival I was told I could only drop paperwork off. If you're not going to meet with people, you should let people know right up front before they come. I cannot speak for the actually tax lady but the lady who answers the phone and sits behind the desk needs better communication and customer service skills. read more

Who doesn't love it when someone else does your taxes for you and verifies the legality of all your deductions?! I know I enjoy it! Bonus: you can schedule an appointment online and look at the profiles of the employees to make your pick. Patricia (aka Patty) did our taxes a freakin' favor. I was hesitant to get our taxes done since I usually just plug everything in online and leave it at that. When I put everything into the computer, we realized that there were a couple issues that we weren't sure about and opted to instead get our taxes done here. SO GLAD WE DID! Our estimated return if we had done it on our own was $1000+ less than the return we got from Patty at H&R Block. FTW! read more

Being an engineer, I take pride in my number crunching. However, I love the convenience that comes from a computer software program like turbotax. Unfortunately, this year our taxes became too complicated for turbo tax to handle. They calculated us owing a ridiculous amount in state. Holy Moly! Lovely Janelle W. then alerted me that in a similar situation, she received all of that money back after going to H&R Block! Sign me up! The storefront is in the Pearl Kai Shopping center at the end by Mamaya. When I went, there was plenty of parking at that end, but after my appointment it looked like nearby parking was hard to find. The man at the front desk was super nice. He offered me a cup of coffee while I waited. My tax person was a little late, but it's an unrealistic expectation to believe everyone's taxes can be completed in a 60 minute apppointment. My own took over 90 minutes. After her own number massaging, she was able to get us all of that money back and then some by finding a mistake in our previous years returns. Best money spent! We file California state taxes as well, and they did not have all the forms available for that return. I'm not sure if that's nationwide in every h&r block or just in the state of Hawaii, but when we fell out of her comfort range, she struggled with finding/completing this form. This would be the drawback with going with a franchise tax helper vice a private freelancer. I found the form online and provided it to her. Now that I have a copy and saw how she inputted the numbers, I'm not sure if I'll return if I can recreate it, but it was definitely worth the money for this year's returns. read more

Being not knowing about taxes, i depend on my tax specialist to help with as much as i can claim. H&R Block Pearl Kai at Kamehameha is not the place to go -- I worked with Charlene and she could not find anything to help me with refund. she asked for my son's school and tax refund which she asked if i could bring in and i did. After i brought all information on school and tax information so she said she could help -- she told me she could not. In addition she did not ask any questions at all if what other payments etc.. i made during the last year despite telling her i help with my son's school payment etc.... Charlene could not help. i don't know other else to give her unless she ask questions but she didn't even try. she started talking about Micronesian and people who are receiving welfare and don't work -- then she went on to talk about they should be working etc, etc.... I will go back to my Jackson Hewitt in Peal City - at least they help you as much as they can...... Sorry H&R Block -- never again!!!!! At least not with charlene. read more

Mary Muhlenkort has been doing our taxes for years. She's the best! It's not cheap, but I know that she is getting us the most refund possible and I feel confident that my taxes are done properly. Showed them my W-2 and a 1099. The tax person said that because I'm a low income worker the 1099 wouldn't affect me and that I only had to pay $700 which will be deducted from my refund automatically. Well as I'm watching her, my tax refund went down by $2,100 I asked her why so much. She couldn't even answer. She went and started over again and the next time my refund went down by $2,300, again I asked her why is it going down so much and she couldn't answer. So I said if your a professional tax preparer why can't you answer a simple question, her response, I've been ding this for 15 years I know what I'm doing. I said well you said on the 1099 I would only pay $700 but I'm paying $2100-$2300.. No response, I took my paper work and left. Never again will I go to any H&R block. read more

Worst experience ever. No problem with Trina but the receptionist who've have been there for awhile has a terrible attitude and I'm disgusted. After a previous conversation of trying to discuss an issue I was having I called back to then cancel any appointments I had and before I could say a name I simply asked to cancel my appointments and she HANGS up. No attitude was given and because of a previous phone call we were discussing an issue she decided to hang up the phone knowing it was the same person. I have never had such an unprofessional experience and I will definitely be filing my taxes else where for years to come. As a front desk person who's not even a real expert on taxes it's always best to remain professional instead of trying to answer questions they know nothing about, I don't know why a tax PROFESSIONAL did not give a call instead the front desk was trying to solve the issue herself ! read more

Never again , too over priced so commercialized took more than an hour to fix our papers didn't even told us that the person were working with won't be available when we went back. We had a terrible experience with h and r block second lady assisted us is an old fat lady we had our 7 mos baby and we were told she top 5 on assisting customers were so disgusted having her fart every 5 mins we thought it was our baby that popped but it's not him and she keeps asking people how to do stuff like she doesn't know what she was doing after she did our taxes we owed 2 k plus me and. My husband were like this is not suppose to be like the First Lady discussed to us to we called back after coz we don't wanna deal with the fart lady and gave us another lady to fix our stuff it's been a year now our 2013 refund was not sent yet thanks h and r block for messing it up read more
