When we moved up here in 2018 to get away from my husband's HIGH CONFLICT ex, who he shares a child, and the child's court appointed money hungry lying Attorney (get him Susan Bassi) who were making our family's life miserable by TONS of FALSE CPS Reports that were all unfounded which some of the false allegations were horrific made by his ex and his ex used a Kaiser ER Doctor where she works as a nurse to make the horrific false report that was unfounded/ False calls to Police (all unfounded)/ Lies in Court (unfounded)/ multiple Custody Evaluations by the court which proved his ex a liar and coaching the child/ lies by his ex to Kaiser doctors where she works and we have our health insurance (WE got a court ordered for break the glass to stay safe from her) and gets away with her lies by telling everyone she's a nurse there instead of the "child mom" / and much much more. I worked with Dr Kurt over a period of 5 months, virtually (I am not based in USA but in Asia). I was looking for therapist/ relationship coaches who were properly trained for marriage issues, with extensive experience in divorce (or threat of divorce) cases. I definitely found what I was looking for in Kurt. It started with me reading his blog and finally I decided to engage him directly. At the start, I was a little unsure because I am living in a different country/ cultural context, but after 5 months I can confidently say it was not (never was) an issue for me in my work with him. I highly appreciated Kurt's willingness to professionally & respectfully call "a spade a spade" and not fluff around (this is both for the issues he identified with my husband and also with me). I only wish I found Kurt earlier and started counselling earlier. Unfortunately, my husband was not willing to do marriage counselling. Two years ago, after my wife and I separated, I was in a bad emotional place. I had tried other counselors, but they didn't connect with me and just sat there and stared at me, hoping that I would talk so they could react. I had found Kurt through his blog and right away could tell from his articles that this guy knew exactly what I was going through. Every piece of advice was spot on to my situation. I didn't know how therapy would work with him- after all, I was located in San Jose and he's in Roseville. However, Kurt met with me through FaceTime and we continued that way for all of my counseling. This proved to be extra helpful when the COVID pandemic came and our meetings never ceased. In the beginning of my counseling, Kurt was able to accommodate the extra attention I needed by scheduling extra sessions with me despite his busy schedule. After I got past my initial conflicts, we were able to settle down to a more regular schedule that was appropriate for my needs. Kurt is definitely a great therapist for guys, he responds and gives the advice that's needed, often following up with questions to get to the roots of problems that I hadn't even thought of before. The way he was able to pick up on small phrases to dig deeper into them was incredibly helpful to my sessions and I would often think about these topics long after our sessions. I have been with Kurt for two years and consider myself a completely different person than I was when first meeting him: more confident, a better father, knowledgable about my wants and needs, and able to put myself first so that I can help those around me. We've covered a lot over the last few years with Dr. Kurt and are honestly still together because of his help. He walked us through practical steps to improve our relationship and communication while ensuring we took the time to work on ourselves and not just the relationship. There is this stigma around getting help and talking to someone about private and personal issues, but that needs to change. Having a professional like Kurt open our eyes to aspects we would never otherwise be aware of is crucial to our improvements. So, I'll start by saying that Kurt obviously tries to help people, and from other reviews, he does successfully at least for some. He ended up not being the person for me for a variety of reasons, but I have a few things for you to consider and that I wish I considered myself before giving him $840 for 3 hours of his time. I'll echo another comment that he does not talk to you to see whether you'll be a good match. You have pay to find out. That should have been a warning for me to walk. I didn't, and it's my fault for not doing so. 1) his sessions are shorter than other therapists, he charged more for 1.5h that other qualified therapists charge for 2h in my area, and I live in a very expensive area (which I know costs more than his). Obviously he can charge anything he thinks is fair to him and you or I don't have to agree to that price, but keep that in mind. 2) his schedule is pretty full. That's up to you to decide whether it's good or bad. I made the mistake to assume that he would be a better person to help and I should be willing to forgo the free 20mn chat most therapists will have with you on the phone to see whether you're comfortable working with them (because he doesn't offer that). That was my mistake, he was not the best match and that cost me $840 to find out (including a $420 session I was forced to pay for after I already had found a better therapist). Because his schedule was full, I made the double mistake of booking a 2nd session a week out and then being stuck with it. Don't let my mistake be yours. 3) he has the most strict cancellation policy of any medical professional I've worked with in the last 25 years: you pre-pay and if you need to cancel less than 7 days, you're liable for the full amount. I found a therapist who I felt was a better fit 3 days after talking to him. That put me 4 days away from our session. I Emailed right away to ask to cancel and was told that he found no one to fill the slot (slot that was still empty other weeks so no one was taking it it seems, but hard to check). He gave me the choice of not having the session if I wished not to (should I consider that gracious?), but he was keeping the money either way ($420, ouch) To be clear, he gives himself the right to do this, and I had to agree to it before being able to schedule anything. I foolishly agreed to this, you get to decide if you're ok with that choice, or not. 4) the therapy itself. First session I spent most of the time talking, which is understandable given that I had to explain to him where things were at. Second session that I was mostly forced to have given that my money was lost either way, felt a bit more like a bar conversation with a buddy giving you his opinion from time to time. Hard to judge his skills or whether he could have done better given more time and money, just that I was not overly impressed with the short time we did have. He did give a couple of pieces of advise that were in direct contradiction with some therapy books I read though. Whether it's bad, or whether there is enough advise out there that even professionals, disagree, you can decide for yourself I will however say that he didn't know some reference books related to the issues I wanted to talk about and that I was told by Email he had experience with. He did ask me at some time to summarize some parts for him, but with me paying $280/h , that feels a bit steep for me filling him in on reference books that other therapists know quite well. I do want to be clear, though that I no time did I feel he was dishonest, or unprofessional. His policies are clearly and prices are clearly stated. I think they are both over-reaching, but he's allowed to have them and it's up to you to decide if you're ok with them, or not. The worst he may have done, was maybe not to have been motivated or helpful on our 2nd session I was effectively forced to have given that I wouldn't be getting a refund, and obviously I'm biased here, so you can take that with a grain of salt. read more

We went to see Dr Kurt at a difficult time. And he was exactly what we needed. He made us face our decisions, and take responsibility for our actions, and at the same time become creative to solve problems, rather than dwell on them and become resigned. He was tough, but fair. We both needed to be challenged, and held accountable, and he did so kindly and respectfully. It was tough at times, as introspecting and taking responsibility often is, but ultimately worth it. Last year my boyfriend and I hit a huge bump in our relationship, to the point where it was either split or find an avenue to help our relationship. He suggested we go to counseling. I was very reluctant to do so, however we did have two kids together, and him bringing up counseling showed me that he did want to work on the issues that were going on. I asked him to look up some places and let me know where he wanted to go. I also did my part and spent about a week googling and researching relationship/marriage counseling in our area. After emailing and picking about 3 places out, my boyfriend had asked me if I would feel better seeing a man or a woman, I told him- I don't care I just want to get working on us. After thoroughly going through Guy Stuff's webpage & Facebook page, I had hoped that he would pick this place, I told him (my boyfriend) there's a place called Guy Stuff Counseling....I didn't need to say much more, he had picked this place too. The best part about seeing Kurt (in my opinion) he's not the stereotypical therapist. My main hesitation about going to see someone was thinking it was going to be stuck in a room, starting from when we were born and growing up and becoming adults and all of the choices that we have made and what we could have done better and why do you think we made those choices-kind of situation, loosing focus to the problems(s) that were currently at hand....But thankfully, that wasn't the case....We went in, discussed our issues that was hindering us at that point, and went from there. Later on Kurt dove into our backgrounds (family life and whatnot). We were lucky to see Kurt for approximately a year, due to financial issues and being laid off, we had to stop our sessions for the time being. I have nothing bad or negative to say about this place so in short (kind of) here are the pro's: * Guy Stuff is not the cheapest counseling center, nor is it the most expensive. The old saying goes- you get what you pay for. If you do your research it is very comparable to many places out there. *Kurt gets to the heart of the matter, he is efficient in his sessions. Don't expect your relationship/personal issues to be fixed in a month, it takes time. *Kurt is not bias-he does not favor the man over the woman or vise-versa. It is exactly what it says-Designed for men and the women that love them. *Kurt is smart- if you make lame excuses for the actions that you have done, or didn't do- expect to be called out on it. *Go in with an open mind, understand that there will be things that you will not like to hear about you from your partner and Kurt, and sometimes the things that you say out loud about yourself. The truth hurts sometimes, but you got to use it as a stepping stone to not necessarily change right away, but do some adjusting in your life. *He is personable- if something comes up in your session that Kurt has gone through, he will share his person experience and what he had done to get through it. *If you and/or your partner are not able to make an appointment in person- there are other options that are provided -phone call session, skype, email ect.. There were times when my boyfriend was out of town for work weeks at a time, I would go to the appointment and put him on the phone. *Whether you are married,divorced, dating, single, male or female- sometimes there comes a point where we need to talk to someone that's "neutral" someone that is not friend or family-for a tune up of sorts for our mental health----See Kurt!!! *Most importantly be honest!!! Because Kurt will be with you. I have recommended Kurt to a handful of people, even if they were strapped financially, or lived in another state, I still told them to check out his page ( and Facebook) and read stories that pertains to their situation. Its been a while since I have been in there, I still check out his page and follow on facebook, but even if things don't work in the relationship, you will be able to gain some knowledge and take things with you that will help you out in life. Dr. Kurt is thoughtful, practical, insightful, and most of all, effective. It's difficult to capture the weight of Dr. Kurt's help in a short review. As someone who always thought counseling was for "other people", I began to have debilitating anxiety after a series of panic attacks that seemed to come out of the blue. I reached out to Dr. Kurt and began seeing him twice per month. When I started, I felt like I was barely holding it together. Dr. Kurt gave me helpful techniques to start functioning again.Through his insight, Dr. Kurt helped me see habitual wrong-thinking that have grown to almost every area of my life. Together we developed a toolkit that helps me recognize these patterns, and I am continuing to make progress. The lessons learned at GSC have shaped my relationships with my wife and kids as well. It's shaped the way I see situations in a very meaningful way. I don't think I could have reached where I am today without my time with Kurt. Sometimes one (or a couple) needs a little help. I'm not ashamed to say I reached out for some professional guidance for my relationship. I called to speak with Mr. Smith to see if this would be a good fit before making an appointment. I wad told he didn't talk to people before the first appointment, and was offered a Skype appointment at an exorbitant rate. I was told I could email him my request to discuss what I was looking for, though. So I emailed. No answer. I called again two weeks later and was told by the secretary that my emailed had been received, and she would pass along my message. No answer. This is a very reasonable request. I have several therapist friends and family members and know they always do a phone consult before asking someone to pony up for a full appointment. So if you are looking for a very expensive therapist who feels that there is no need to speak to you or return your calls and emails before the first meeting, and feels that skyping is an appropriate media for a first counseling session with him, this might be the therapist for you. Unfortunately, I can't speak to his actual skills as a therapist since he never responded to me. read more

My husband and I recently started to go to counseling and needed some help to get back on track. We've been working with Kurt for about 2 months and enjoy each of our sessions. Kurt helped me in many personal areas and I would be happy to recommend him to anyone who truly desires to heal, improve, grow emotionally/spiritually. Due to a recent job loss, I ended a two-year stint of seeing Kurt every other week and was extremely disappointed to no longer see him. I started to see Kurt when my wife and I separated in the spring of 2015. Looking back at my first visit I had little to no self-worth. I truly believed that I was not worthy of love or belonging and that I only deserved the bad things that were happening to me. I believed that the demise of my marriage was all my fault and that all I needed to do was work on my anger, which my wife said I was all my fault. I thought that if I worked on my anger over the course of one session, my wife would graciously accept me back. Kurt helped me see that the anger I was struggling with was just the tip of the iceberg and that the root of the anger was well below the surface (upbringing, toxic environment, etc.). I faithfully met with Kurt for two years every other week to work on those items below the surface. Like physically working out for the first time my emotional muscles hurt like hell in the beginning but I was growing stronger, even if I didn't see it at the time. We talked/worked through so many hurts from my childhood and my marriage. I cried a lot and felt very safe shedding those tears in his presence. I learned that the demise of my marriage was not all my fault, nor was it all my wife's doing. It takes two to tango. I learned to take responsibility for my areas of failure. Kurt also challenged me when I needed him to. He wasn't afraid to call me out when I did something stupid. I had sent some poorly worded emails to my wife that first holiday and Kurt was swift to exhort me. I could take his correction because I knew/trusted that he cared for me. Kurt ended every session by praying for me. He encouraged me to engage with God continually. His support really helped me during times when I had little to no faith in God or His church. I had met other therapists before meeting Kurt and the one thing that separated him from the rest is that I would walk away from sessions with Kurt being hopeful and feeling human. The therapists I had seen before Kurt burdened me with so much shame when I was not perfect that I would walk away from sessions with them feeling so unworthy to be alive. Kurt encouraged me to fight for my kids when I wanted to give up because of all the shame I was experiencing. I have him to thank for the positive relationship I have with my children today. Would you believe me if I told you that because of the separation/divorce I am a better human being and a better dad? Kurt was instrumental in the transformation. There were a few occasions where I could not come in for an in-person visit and Kurt accommodated me by having our meeting over the phone or Facetime. I always appreciated Kurt's openness for me to email him about whatever I was thinking or struggling with. He encouraged this form of journaling. If you were to meet me today you will find that my outward circumstances are still the same or even worse in some areas as when I started seeing Kurt in the spring of 2015. I am still working on finalizing my divorce. I look the same physically. I am still in a tough place financially. Also, I was recently laid off from my job of 5+ years, which is why I had to stop seeing him. But even though my external circumstances have not changed for the positive, yet, internally you will find in me a Man who believes that he is worthy of love and belonging. You will find in me a dad who loves his children better today than two years ago. You will find in me a whole person who embraces vulnerability as a strength, not a weakness. It is very hard to admit that you need counseling, especially when you're a guy. But I don't think there should be any shame in it. That's one of the reasons I consulted Guy Stuff recently when I needed help with some issues I was dealing with. Kurt's approach is very comfortable and guy friendly, just as he advertises. It is clear that his processes and strategies are developed specifically for men, and they are very effective. I felt like I was hanging out with a buddy, except this buddy was a skilled mentor who was helping me attack my problems with solutions that really worked. While searching Google for a psychologist in Roseville I came across many. I made a few calls and did some research. The credentials and positive reviews of Dr. Kurt stood out to me. I called Dr. Kurt and explained the personal situation I was dealing with. Dr. Kurt advised me upfront that his hourly rate was higher than others in the area and that he was fully booked for the month. I explained to Dr. Kurt that I had researched others and was willing to pay for exceptional service and had flexibility in my schedule. Dr. Kurt found an opening for me and I was able to see him. As there were no regular openings available, Dr. Kurt continued to make time for me. Dr. Kurt even stayed late and sacrificed his Friday nights twice to get me in for 5:30pm appointments. Dr. Kurt helped me reflect back upon my childhood to identify the thinking patterns that led to my current problems. Dr. Kurt helped me greatly in becoming the man that I strive to be. When you work with Dr. Kurt, you gain valuable insight into your relationships and learn coping tools for issues that harm these relationships. He was the only person to help my husband and I recognize some deep rooted issues, and he did so by being honest and calling things out as he saw them, while offering guidance and support in a safe and positive environment. He will tell you many things you do not want to hear, but need to hear....that is what separates him from other therapists. There is no coddling or tip toeing around issues...he truly does want to affect change, and truly does want you to follow through and get results. And he counsels in a very professional yet empathetic manner, which is a hard balance to achieve. He is also very accommodating in finding different ways to make the meetings happen if you can't make it in personally. After two years of counseling, and lots of schedule changes on our end, we did have to find a new therapist who worked later hours to accommodate these changes. We will miss consulting with Dr. Kurt and hate to lose someone we trust and respect. But through working with him, we now have a gold standard to measure our next therapist up to and can continue to use the tools we've learned from him, in our daily lives. read more

I recently ended an 8-year counseling relationship with Dr. Kurt. When I began seeing him, I was successful on the outside, but dying on the inside. I had no self-worth, an overwhelming sense of responsibility for everyone in my life, and was on verge of depression. In a word, I was at the bottom of a very deep pit, and I could not see any way out. During the past 8 years, I learned how to set and enforce appropriate boundaries, began to believe in and see the man God made me to be, and found my purpose in being the father to my sons as God intended me to be. It took a few months, but I still remember the exercises and insights Dr. Kurt used to help me understand my deep rooted issues. The expression and release of such emotions burned those lessons into my conscious, so that I readily recognize when my issues are heading my way. Along the way, I went through a bitter divorce, two lay-offs, 7 months of unemployment, a week in jail, and the death of my ex-wife, all the while reaching out to my sons in a healthier way than I ever did during my marriage. I kept myself open to reconciling with my ex-wife until the day she died. Through it all, Kurt helped me keep the faith, while I continued with my Bible study and Celebrate Recovery. He held me accountable for my choices, and honest in my self-evaluations. For most of that season of trials, Kurt was the safe place to express myself, question myself, and guide myself to see the situation clearly, both in the moment and for eternity. I moved to Stockton 5 years ago, and continued to "see" Kurt via telephone. I really appreciate his flexibility and availability. He responds to emails promptly "off the clock", and he was available by phone almost 24/7 during the week long crisis prompted by my ex-wife's death and subsequently custody battle with my ex-mother-in-law. His knowledge, experience, and wisdom were invaluable as I elected to represent myself in my divorce case against an attorney with the reputation of being one of the most aggressive divorce lawyers. Whatever fees I paid to Kurt totaled less than half what I would have paid to an attorney. More importantly, my self-esteem and sense of peace when all around me was falling apart stayed intact throughout several crises and near-crises over the past 8 years. I only terminated our professional relationship now because I feel reasonably recovered, and ready to tackle the next phase of my life based on the faith I grew in the last 8 years. No one but Kurt and I (and God) know the miraculous changes I underwent and accepted, but I can move forward with confidence knowing the Great Counselor still has my back. If not for Kurt- our relationship would have probably ended in the so called messy divorce. We were on the fritz. Fighting almost daily. Could not get along. No reason to fight as bad as it was- we just bought a new house and have a beautiful 2 year old child. We were fighting since the day we have been married. Bitter fights with no resolution or growth on how or why to make it better. We called Dr. Kurt and asked for some intervention- his rates were the most we have ever paid. But that aside, he was compassionate, hopeful, and walked us through each argument. We got to the issues. He asked us to listen to each other while we talked through our feelings. Gradually, we began to fight better, shorter, and even not as half the amount as we used to. After a year, things are much better, we have worked through a million of the issues that caused us to fight in the first place and now work together as more of a team. Many counselors we have gone to refuse to give feedback (only ask you how you feel etc- instead of offering advice or viewpoints on how things look) and side with my wife automatically by default.
