Both salons are really well equipped as well as being huge, with a reputation for excellence. Perhaps what most distinguishes them from each other is the style with which they operate. The Guy Christian Salon caters more to the younger generation, offering really dynamic cuts, and unique looks, whereas Coray & Co. deals with a slightly older, more conservative crowd. The cost of a cut varies dramatically depending on which stylist you choose. Prices range from £25 for a cut and finish with a graduate designer, all the way up to £45 for the same with Guy Christian himself. They run a really interesting discount scheme, which operates on midweek days only. Ok, so to 'fess up first, I am officially a big fan of the Guy Christian salon. I started having my hair cut by Chris (Guy Christian himself) about two years ago and followed him to his salon when he opened it just over a year ago. The salon is completely lovely - it's a fantastic mixture of edgy/funky/luxurious decor that reminds me of a french boudouir. Not that I've ever been in a french boudouir mind you The staff here are ALL really friendly and relaxed whilst still being completely professional and fab at their jobs. The whole experience starts with a consultation, then a relax in one of the Shiatsu massage chairs whilst you have your hair washed and scalp massaged. They'll also fetch you a drink or a magazine and generally just be very charming. I've got a mass of unruly curly hair and Chris is fantastic at listening to what I want as well as suggesting options for my hair (and even occasionally telling me off/giving me hair care advice). I always come away feeling really happy with the cut and he's one of the only hairdressers I've met who knows how to dry curly hair properly. I've been getting my hair cut here since the salon opened and have become friends with Chris and the staff to the extent that I'm now editing their website (that's my vested interest bit owned up to). All that aside I would honestly recommend this salon to anyone who fancies a great style experience. It's a little bit of luxury tucked away on City Road. read more

Came here today for a hair colouring appointment going from black to an ombre lightening. To note, I've never had my hair coloured before and was really looking for something different and trusted Guy Christian after reading many good things about them online. ~ Customer Service: The girls here were very lovely and professional. The woman at reception was so friendly, immediately offering to take my coat for me. I was seen to straight away, even though I was a tad bit early for my appointment and all the employees were very attentive throughout. One thing I liked is that since sometimes I'm not a particularly talkative person, they're friendly without necessarily forcing conversation on you. Basically, it really seemed like there was a lot of effort put into making me feel as comfortable as possible. They even offer you complimentary drinks (including wine, beer, and some non-alcoholic drinks too of course). ~ Results: In general, I'm really happy with the styling done! My colour is fantastic and I love it. The prices are fair for what you pay for as well, it's not cheap but it's still affordable. My only concern is that when I was getting my hair curled with a curling brush and hairdryer, my hair ended up absolutely damaged and dry. Normally, my hair is really silky and healthy so this was pretty distressing for me. Hopefully some conditioner at home can fix it, though! --- I'm really happy with my experience here and would definitely come back in the future. A solid 4 stars from me! After walking past this salon many times I always thought it was too posh and expensive for me but I decided to take the plunge. I first went here on Saturday to ask them to make something of a bad haircut I'd had at a previous salon and the stylist was great, we discussed a possible solution and worked out a style that would suit. After a fantastic hair wash and back massage from the chair, I was restyled and ready to go in under an hour. When I left I felt really good but wasn't too sure about the cut so after mulling it over I went back today (Monday) and talked to another stylist, there was more of a consultation this time and Andrea was very attentive and talked me through everything she was doing. Now my cut is much more stylish and easy to manage and I'll never let anyone else cut my hair again. I'm finally happy to have found a decent salon in Cardiff. read more

I went to Guy Christian for the first time yesterday after reading a review on Qype and I have to say I absolutely loved it. I had my hair cut by Chris, he is very knowledgeable about hair and even suggests styles to suit your face shape. The ambiance of the salon is great you can even get a glass of wine or a bottle of beer as a free complementary drink! I opted for the water, which was ice cold with a slice of lemon, lovely for a hot summer's day. But it gets even better, not only do you get a back massaging chair with a foot rest whilst your having your hair washed, every customer gets a 'loyalty card' and after a certain amount of visits you get free gifts! I even had a voucher for £5 off my next visit. I absolutely loved my experience at Guy Christian, the cut, the price, the salon, everything was excellent. I will defiantly be returning and I would recommend this salon to everyone!! read more

Just left cardiff bay salon feeling bloody fab..... Sam did an excellent job on my hair cut...walked in with a bad cut from 2wks ago at different salon. Had few photos of style to suggest not to short at the front please and a nice fringe. I have been a regular customer of Guy Christian's a little over a year now and I usually leave happy....until today! I attended my appointment today for my usual bleach application, toner, cut and blow dry. I had a slight grey hue from a home dye job gone wrong and was told a deep condition will fix it. This had happened just before my first ever visit to Guy Christian so I knew they would sort it. (You'd think I would've learnt my lesson ay?) Anyway, my chat with the colourist resulted in her suggesting to bleach my roots twice (completely unrelated to the grey hue). Now in all the time I have been having bleach and toner, I've never been told or had to have my roots done twice, but as most people - I trust my hairdresser so went with it. She then proceeded to finish my hair and all turned out great (but still no difference to having my roots done once). Had my hair cut by a lady called Andrea - fantastic! Thank you, but noticed my hair was extremely dry and brittle - a lot worse condition than what I came in with! I went to the till, expecting to pay my usual £80-100. After all, my last visit was a bleach app, toner, cut, blow dry and even a bright second colour added to my hair. This visit was shorter than last time and it cost me £85. Oooooh no.... It was a whopping £185!!!! £185! That's £100 more than I've been paying for the last year and a half and the only difference is the hairdresser decided to do my roots twice!!! Now my hair is dry and in bad condition!! I've had to fork out more money on a deep conditioner to try and sort it out and I'm £100 out of pocket! I even asked for the breakdown of the cost, the answer I got was the roots being done twice and I must have been undercharged previously!! What!!!? Undercharged every single time I've visited the salon? I don't think so! Needless to say I'm extremely disappointed! I feel let down as a loyal customer and completely ripped off! My suggestion would be to get a quote beforehand and don't be afraid to challenge what the hairdresser advises if it's something different. I hope your visit is better than mine as I know they can do much better! Shame really. read more

Long story short: I spent a lot of money getting my hair cut and dyed only for the dye to wash out very quickly. I decided to come to Guy Christian because I'd never gotten my hair dyed before and wanted it done professionally so it would look well done and would last. I set up an appointment relatively easily and spoke with a stylist about what I wanted to do. My original plan was to get a light purple that I assumed would fade to a white or gray after a month or two. The hair stylist warned me that a light shade would fade quickly and convinced me to go a few shades darker, and to expect the dark colour to fade to a blonde (hair doesn't fade to white naturally) in about four weeks. I was at the salon for about four hours getting my hair cut, bleached and dyed and was initially very pleased with the result. However, the hair colour didn't last. I washed my hair much less than I normally do, as recommended by the stylist; even so, within a week, the dye had almost entirely washed out of my hair. I went back and complained and they offered to redye my hair and offered to sell me some shampoo with some toner in it to keep the colour in even longer, but said I should wash my hair as little as possible even with this shampoo. Even with these measures, it's been less than two weeks and my hair has almost entirely faded to blonde. I think I'm most disappointed because I chose this salon and paid quite a bit of money for everything and it hardly lasted at all. In total, I paid about £180, or £210 including tip (£140 for the initial cut+ombre with a £20 tip, £40 for special shampoo(with toner)+conditioner, £10 tip for the second dye). For that amount of money I really would have expected longer-lasting results. Guy Christian Salon had decent service and a good cut, but a VERY disappointing hair colouring which was not worth the price. read more

Well, apart from the fact that Guy Christian is a hotty and a laugh and, erm, a hotty, this salon is also completely fabulous. The decor is divine, all black who is the fairest of them all? mirrors hanging on the walls and black chandeliers dangling from the ceiling. Everything in the salon is either chic or uber-chic. Go to the website and check out the gallery and you'll see what i mean. The music they play is so cool it's frosty (though Guy would have you believe it's just stuff he's got lying around on his iPod - which it probably is, damn it!) and the staff are all hip, good looking guys and gals and friendly to boot. You get free drinks and lots of mags to read. The best thing about this salon though is the standard of the service. They KNOW their stuff in here. I wanted to go blonde after being red (through a home dye job - yeurch!) and the man with his name above the door persuaded me to go back to my natural colour first to let the red grow out and give my hair time to mend itself. He spent ages on my hair and when I came out of the salon it looked AMAZING - all shiny andSHINY! Like when I was a wee little student. It's a bit on the expensive side, but hell, it's worth it. Sometimes I get vouchers through the post as well. Result. Oh, and the chairs that massage you while you're having your hair washed are pretty funky too. read more

First time visiting had consultation on 07/4/2017 discussed what I wanted with Jenny (senior colourist ) city road was told they would be able to do Tuesday, rang up on 11/4/2017 being Tuesday, spoke to the receptionist if they could fit me in today took my contact details asked what I was having done told them bayalage, toner, oplex blow dry, I even said I can speak to Jenny, receptionist insisted she could do it, they said they could fit me in be at the salon for 1pm, arrived for appointment soon as I got there was told might not be able to do this today after going through what I wanted again was confirmed they wouldn't be able to do my colour today. So I asked why didn't you inform me I've just came down here for nothing and I don't live locally, I was expecting to get my hair done today, then Jenny being passive aggressive with me said I tried to fit myself in, as in its my fault, then she said they tried to contact me but they didn't have my number despite given it to the receptionist twice. Very unprofessional blaming the cilent when it was your receptionists fault for not taking details down correctly if you didn't have the time to fit me in you should of told me before hand. Made up my mind then and there would not recommend, I will spend my £130 plus somewhere else where I'm treated with respect and friendliness and not to mention when you make a mistake what procedure do you offer the client, because you'll happily take a £20 deposit if you get no turn ups, but that doesn't work the other way round when wasting a clients time ? No apology from any of the staff for their cock up. I had a lucky escape booked in with Ocean instead. Staying well away. read more

Not very happy, ended up spending £155.00 and 3 hours there just to come out with a very pitiful ombre (looks no different) and the cut doesn't look much different either. She didn't really talk about what colour the ombre was going to be either (how light etc), even though I asked a few times. Sat alone for 50 minutes without anyone checking up on me and the woman dying my hair hardly spoke to me when she was putting the dye in, then she was chatting and laughing with another client. To put it simply, my experience of this salon has been consistently poor. I have visited 4/5 times, each costing at least £90, and each time I have had to return for the stylist to correct and recover my hair. The staff always seem entirely incompetent and unwilling to listen to their clients. Despite each time spending an extra £15 on Olaplex treatment, my hair has been ruined as every single time I have had my hair coloured/highlighted, the stylist has left my hair half-covered while she tends to another customer; the last time I visited I had bleach on my already relatively fragile hair for 1 hour and 45 minutes. When leaving the salon I was told my hair was "stretchy when washed" - in other words damaged beyond repair. I also specifically asked for absolutely zero warm tones and exclusively only cold/ash tones to be put in my hair, as I experience rosacea and warmth in my hair makes my skin look even more red. However my hair was almost ginger when leaving the salon! The staff blamed it on the lighting, however in the natural light of my home it is still unbearably warm and an absolute waste of £95. The dye quality is extremely poor, staff are incompetent and rude, atmosphere is vile and the overall experience is always awful. I continue to return to the salon in the hope that, as the stylist knows my hair and what I ask for, one day the service will improve. However after my final visit I will no longer return to the City Road salon, and will be discouraging all my friends from going there also. read more

I have dark blonde/light brown hair. I showed a picture to the colourist Lucy who also had hair swatches which matched my natural colour and we picked a colour a couple of shades lighter for the highlights. She came out with a large tub of dye which was bright orange. Paints my roots and hairline and drags it through large sections then adds foils with a second colour. I can see the colour is very dark. At no point does she come back to check on my hair. Another stylist comes to wash it off and add a treatment on. Says it will be 30 minutes but is at least an hour before anything else happens. Another stylist comes to wash this off and does one wash which was not thorough and does not rub off the dye that is all over my hair line. She says the lady cutting my hair will be 10 minutes, I am waiting for about 30 minutes. The 'master stylist' asks how I would like my hair cut.. this is the first time she is seeing my hair as she didn't see what it was like when I first came in. She does not notice my hair has not been washed properly or the orange dye on my forehead.I have to point out my hair has not been washed. She looks shocked and then washed my hair and wipes my forehead. She then starts blow drying my hair and I can see my hair is a dark reddish brown, completely different to my natural hair and eyebrows and definitely NOT what I asked for. I told her my hair has been dyed the wrong colour and this was the last I saw of her as she scuttled off without even finishing my blow dry or hair cut. The colourist comes over and says I must have different pigments in my hair and it will look different when it's curled (!!!). Not even a hint of an apology and then she walked away and I did not see her again. The manager Jenny took over and kept the salon open until 10pm trying to fix my hair. The owner Guy Christian himself stayed behind until about 8pm to check my haircut and even he could not tell my haircut was not even finished. He also commented he thought the colour was a bit 'rich' when Lucy was applying it. This day I was in the salon from 1pm until 10pm. I was sat left to stare out of the window for 4.5 hours before they even started their attempt at colour correction. I was not charged (their original charge was going to be £150!) and I was given a goody bag which consisted of a travel mini shampoo and conditioner and a conditioning treatment. I left the salon exhausted and beyond upset my hair (which was always natural looking and in good condition) was ruined. I came back twice after this. The first time my hair was stripped again and dyed and then toned. I was assured whilst the colour would not be perfect or what I wanted, the red would not be noticeable. My hair was washed very vigorously by a young lad. My hair cut was finished off and even this stylist did not finish my blow dry - it was dried like I would do it myself at home. I got home and after 1 wash my hair was glowing copper in the sunshine or under any sort of fluorescent light. This stint in the salon lasted over 4 hours on my day off. I went back again for more toner which I was assured by Tiger and Jenny would be more permanent because my hair had settled down it could take a stronger treatment. Tiger then gave me a less than skilful blow dry as she kept getting knots in my hair and curled it into old fashioned ringlets. I am now 2 weeks down the line after this and my hair is borderline orange and several people have asked me if I have dyed my hair - I have not, I have only washed it and the toner has come out. The salon has not charged me and only after having to point out the poor service and the fact my hair is RUINED did I receive a full size bottle of shampoo and reimbursement of my car parking and fuel costs (close to £50). Jenny the manager who I spoke to assured me she would speak to Lucy to find out what went wrong with my colour and phone me to let me know. I have not heard anything or even had a missed call from the salon. Whilst Jenny and Tiger tried their best to fix the colour, unfortunately nothing can undo the fact Lucy dyed my hair red. I have not had an apology or admittance of fault from Lucy and I am now stuck with a hair colour which I hate and does not suit me until it grows out. Whilst my hair has not fallen out after being stripped twice and dyed more than 10 times in a few weeks, it is not in the good condition it was in previously. I cannot believe this salon charge the prices they do - the colourist clearly didn't know what she was doing, the stylists can't do the basics such as wash hair thoroughly or without hurting peoples necks, so called master stylists can't tell if hair has been washed, multiple stylists don't wipe dye off your forehead, the hair cut was average at best, the towels smell damp and feel old. Everyone is good at offering you a glass of water though. read more

Not impressed; staff member I dealt with was not friendly and the cut was not up to scratch-the girl just chomped into my hair without really caring and just made a mess of it, I went in just to get my thick hair thinned out (I have shortish hair) and came out looking like someone had just stuck a bowl on my head and cut around it...would never go back. Kayleigh the colour technician at city road was absolutely amazing, I'm afraid her replacement based at the city road salon is nowhere near as competent as Kayleigh. My hair cost £115 and it looks worse after my appointment than prior to my appointment according to friends/family. orange looking tinge to it the foils are awful, not painted right to the root and I have large streaks here and there,dreadful....probably would have done a better job myself. Went along (to Cardiff Bay Branch) with bleached blonde hair and wanted a softer look. Came out with DARK hair after stylist first put highlights in and then put a dark toner over the lot. It doesn't suit me, as I am naturally fair, so rang up to explain and ask if they could put some lighter highlights in so it wouldn't look so harsh - was told they would but they would charge me in full - I've already paid £135.00 so am definitely not going back. Be careful how you explain yourself - I even took pictures to show what I wanted, am very upset. read more

after reading good reviews i had some high hopes for this salon.. It was the worst salon experience i have ever had. I had my appointment on Saturday, called on the Monday to tell them i had been hacked, chunks missing from my hair and was told to go in on Wednesday, Well i can say the attitude of the manager/owner was disgusting. i have NEVER been treated so bad by a salon before, OR ever returned over a bad hair cut!!! Can't sing this salons praises enough! I've been to dozens of salons over the years who have always left me unhappy. In guy Christian I always feel like I'm having a proper treat and always experience amazing professional service in a really cool and chic environment. I made the mistake of trying another salon once and ended up back in guy Christian who corrected my colour and saved the day :) won't be going anywhere else again! Only downside is it can be a bit pricey at times but you really get what you pay for and there are offers to be had all the time, wonderful salon. read more

I went for a haircut a day before yesterday and I was really disappointed with the level of cleanliness in this place. There was hair from previous customers everywhere. I was shocked seeing that hairdressers instead of cleaning the mess, they were doing their own hair or chatting around. I had nowhere to place my bag as even the small cabinet had sticky stains on it from a coffee which someone had before me. Another, very shocking point was the way how hair was treated, they were pulled really strongly and the roots were not being held. I thought that I would leave that place bold. The hairdresser was clearly in a hurry but after she cut my hair, she rushed to sit down at the reception desk - again - shouldn't she be going back to clean my hair from the floor??! Or for example go and wash her hands after applying all the cosmetics and touching my hair - really poor hygiene. Moreover, her hair was scruffy and I was really hoping that I will get a good hair cut as I believed that there should be at least one positive in it but unfortunately, I have just noticed when washing my hair at home that my hair wasn't cut straight at all and I had to cut the uneven parts myself. Yes, I went for the cheapest option of £30 but I thought that the branded salon should deliver some level of standard regardless of the price. I have been always going to the Bay branch and I was always happy and never had a bad haircut but on City Road I had received not only a bad haircut, but my hair was mistreated and the place was very dirty. Please avoid hairdresser Zoe if you don't want to spend money on the correction haircut. read more

Usually I go to the Cardiff Bay branch but Hayley who used to cut my hair has left so thought I would try the city road one with Adam as it was the same price. When I arrived Adam was cutting someone else's hair but I was happy to wait & everyone in the shop was so friendly which really makes this hair dressers. Adam didn't start to cut my hair probably a good 20 minutes after my appointment was due but he was so lovely & apologetic I didn't mind. Adam didn't seem very confident & this did put me slightly on edge when I said I wanted a good amount cut off the length he asked if I was sure I was ready giving me doubts. The overall hair cut was ok but a few weeks later & I already feel like I need to go again. Anyway I really don't want this to be a negative review Adam was nice, the team are all lovely, the cut was ok but I think in future I would pay extra & hopefully have a more confident hairdresser who would tell me what to have done :) read more

I've been around when it comes to different hairdressers in Cardiff and it wasn't until I found Guy Christian that I've stuck with one for longer than a couple of months. I've been going now for about a year an a half and I can say hand on heart I've never come out disappointed. Your first point of contact is reception and the girl, sorry don't know her name, is lovely. Straight way your treated to good customer service by her taking your coat and an offer of a drink. You then sit in the cosy waiting area where there are many books for you to go through if you wanted to pass the time. Stylist wise there I've seen a few of them and their all amazing and they will work with you and listen to your needs unlike other places that will just nod and then you come out with something different. They have a top-notch colourist who I've also used as i went from black to blonde for some reason and the results we're awesome. I can't see myself going to another hairdressers anytime soon. read more
