Wandering around Portsmouth after lunch, my friend and I wandered into this store because she loves all things print-related. Me, not so much unless I'm in need of something, but I tagged along. So glad I did! This is a cute little store with lots of things to catch the eye. Not just the obvious--print services, cards, stationery, etc.--but also things like recyclable bags and other gifty items. I walked out of there with a small size (there was a large variety of bags for different uses) Baggu reclyclable bag I can fold up and pop into my purse for use when I need it. If Gus & Ruby Letterpress' high-quality products could be paired with high-quality customer service, they would be great. Unfortunately, their poor customer service makes working with Gus & Ruby Letterpress frustrating and disappointing. We worked with Gus & Ruby Letterpress to create an invitation suite and day-of stationery for a formal wedding in Boston. It started out great with an initial meeting in the store. We looked through samples, felt the quality of the paper, and left with exciting ideas for the invitations. Little did we know this would be our last in person meeting, and that even reaching a live person on the phone would be extremely difficult as we moved forward. After our first meeting we submitted ideas and details for the first draft of the wedding suite. Then we waited 14 business days for a first proof. The proof was completely off the mark. The designers at Gus & Ruby Letterpress did not seem to read what we had asked for. For example, one envelope liner option contained fall-colored abstract daisies for a spring formal wedding. We tried to convey our ideas as clearly as possible but the communication channel from us, to our salesperson, to the design team, played out like a game of telephone with a tin can and a string. The message did not get through. After several weeks of revisions, we eventually arrived at a beautiful invitation suite that fit our vision. If communication had been better, we would have reached the final product a lot sooner. During this whole process we never felt like we were a priority, a valued customer, and we often felt dismissed. We continued to work with Gus & Ruby Letterpress for our day-of stationery because there was not time to search out a new stationer and because their products are high-quality. However, it was frustrating to only communicate through email. Our concerns never seemed to be acknowledged by our salesperson. No human ever answered the phone at Gus & Ruby Letterpress. Our overall experience with Gus & Ruby Letterpress fell far short of what we expected from a high-end, custom stationer. I cannot recommend them. read more

What an adorable little shop! I do love me some Gus & Ruby! We stopped in our first trip to Portsmouth - so glad we did! Adorable little shop with all the fun things... tea towels, cards, knick-knacks... all the fun stuff you want to see in an adorable little town such as Portmouth! The staff was so kind and helpful. We went in for a single card and I walked out almost $200 later with cards for all events the upcoming year. I'm so glad we had the opportunity to visit and find this little gem in the heart of Portsmouth. Additionally, I'm so happy they expertly worked in my mom's artwork into the wedding suite from the map, crest, and other artwork features. Even with just a note/sticker (which was very cute), the experience felt more personalized than you'd find if just purchasing through the Baggu website. This store is basically the wish list I didn't know I had, and the gifts I didn't know I needed. Beautiful treasures to keep or give, for all kinds of recipients at all price points. I got a notepad for $8 and a spoon made of gold glitter for $6, plus kept my eye on a dozen things I could see giving (it receiving) for future birthdays. The owners were helpful and engaged but also gave us space, and the store is perfect for wandering through when you're in Portsmouth. Just save yourself enough time to admire everything! read more

Over the last year, I've decided that they have the best cards in Portsmouth and Gus has even helped me to pick out a few cards for my wife. I'm no expert on letterpress and the last thing I need is wedding invitations, but the cards are amazing. This store drew me in immediately while roaming the streets of Portsmouth. The incredible letter pressed work in addition to various body care products, candles, fancy crafts and a selection of children's things was lovely. As with most things in downtown Portland, this print boutique will charge 3-4 times the amount you'll be used to paying anywhere else, but there's plenty of eye candy for the design guru! Products produced in house as well Kate Spade, Paper Source, and all the fancy candle and lotion specialties. Even if you're not having an personalized work done, you can't go wrong just browsing. I felt inspired and invigorated walking out. It's such a lovely spot and any artists paradise. Customer service was ok but the shop was busy and she manned the register and said hello to most customers walking in. Regardless, you must give this shop a look! read more

This store is just gorgeous... one of the highlights of downtown Portsmouth for sure! I always see something I realize I "need" every time I stop in, and I'm never disappointed when I walk out. The entire store is well curated with a collection of quick gifts, witty or niche letterpress cards, fun coffee table items and pretty decor pieces. They have an amazing collection of journals as well - a must during Covid time! The online shopping experience is equally easy, and the shop owners are the nicest people ever. Stopped in here on our weekend trip to Portsmouth. The good news: the selection. Slightly heavy on Rifle Paper, but a nice selection of clever cards -- including presses/vendors that I've bought from or other friends have bought for me (e.g. Sycamore Street, Paper Lovely...and even Tattly). Now, the bad news: the service. We were not acknowledged at all in the store. I wish I could say that this was because they were busy (there were a bunch of folks in the store), but two folks were at the counter (one was not ringing folks up) and another person was chatting up a regular. Only the regular folks were acknowledged over a 20 minute span (I say this because they were greeted by name -- the rest of us got no general greeting). When we were lifting some of the wrapping paper, we weren't asked if we needed any help, had any questions, etc. I was so weirded out by the experience that as I was thinking about writing the Yelp review, I asked my fellow travelers in the car to confirm, "So what did you think of the customer service at the letterpress store?" There was a beat, and someone said, "What customer service?" I appreciate buying local, and I do so as often as is feasible (and sometimes not feasible) on my student budget. And I appreciate the value of establishing business with one's regulars. But I can't support that at the expense of not welcoming potential new customers -- a foundational point for small businesses. While I have selected a higher rating for the very good selection, the experience left a sour taste in my mouth. Based on previous reviews, it looks like my opinion is in the minority, but also not unfounded, so until otherwise proven I'll plan on continuing to get my stationery directly from the vendors themselves. read more

Great little print shop. One of Portsmouth's lesser known gems. Every time I go in, I see something new that I desperately want to bring home. My go-to shop for cards for any occasion; they have an excellent selection of funny + adorable cards for every purpose. I am actually headed there this afternoon to pick up a birthday card (and most likely a sweet 17 month agenda for myself)! Every interaction I have had with the staff has been warm and pleasant. What a beautiful store! I could spend hours in here. Everything is delicate, feminine, soft yet intricate and unique. This store reminds me of Paper Source but more specialized, local, and personal. I love this store. I always have to stop in here on our yearly trip to Portsmouth. The craftsmanship and the beauty of all the items wow me every time. They have all kinds of beautiful gift ideas as well as unique cards you can impress your friends with (instead of getting something from Target again), they also have a wedding planning section, I assume for wedding invitations. The only thing I get sad about is how expensive everything is. I wanted a simple calendar last year and the prices were crazy! I understand you're paying for an art, but yikes. I just couldn't afford to drop that much on a calendar. Anyway, I usually don't buy more than a couple Christmas cards in here, but I love looking at all the fun stuff. Where to even start! We first read about Gus & Ruby in Boston Magazine, and just loved their business model. A beautiful stationary shop started by two dynamic women who named their business after their dogs? Sold. I think I emailed them just a few weeks after we were engaged asking how early was too early to make our appointment - I was that excited, and oh boy did they live up to it. We worked with both Laura and Samantha on our save the dates and invitations, and when after our first appointment we realized we'd practically designed the same invitations as a close friend had recently used, they let us come back in and start the whole process over. What we ended up with were save the dates that were so sweet and original, we didn't stop hearing about it from friends for weeks. Same for the invites. The process is fun, the follow up prompt and accurate, they have relationships with really talented calligraphers, and even the packaging for our invitations when we came in to pick them up was special. Gus & Ruby is practically perfect, and Portsmouth the sweetest place to visit too. read more

Sure, I would find one or two cute ones from time to time scattered around town, but FINALLY a card and stationery mecca has opened in Portsmouth. They also have the most amazing invitations available! They are super friendly and work with you to find the right invitation for you. They have many different suites, and also do work in house. I can't say enough about how wonderful Samantha and her team at Gus & Ruby Letterpress are! I was recommended to them by another friend who used them for her wedding invitations, as well as my wedding planner. I was apprehensive at first because we live right outside of Boston and wasn't really wanting to travel to Portsmouth just to do wedding invitations, but was swayed by both my wedding planner and my dear friend who kept saying, "trust me." My fiance and I made the trip to Portsmouth (make sure you make an appointment if you're going to do wedding invitations) and walked into the most adorable, unique little shop. We were greeted warmly by the woman at the front desk and then brought to the back of the shop where they have a large table set up where we could look at large albums of samples. We were brought glasses of champagne (yummy) and Samantha (one of the co-owners) and another woman sat down with us and gave us the history of Gus & Ruby, asked what we were looking to do, showed us some examples of some of their work and really dug into the land of wedding invitations! With a lot of amazing help and guidance from Samantha, my fiance and I created the most stunning wedding invitations with reply postcards. We just sent them out a couple of days ago and people are calling, texting and emailing telling us how "magnificent, stunning, elegant and classy" our invitations are. The turnaround time was great, they kept us informed of cost, and didn't push up-selling at all! They were truly wonderful and I have recommended them to two of my newly engaged friends.
