We booked our first ever horseback ride experience for an 11:30am group session and lucky for it, it turned out that no one else booked the same time so it turned out to be a couples experience. Our wrangler was Cooper, he was very chill and knowledgeable. He gave us simple instructions on how to handle a horse, how to hop on and off, steering the horses, as well as the do's and dont's. Once we started, we started to realize how smart these horses are. Patriot, the horse that Cooper was on took a long piss after stepping to the side and Buckles, the horse I rode behind him knew to stop, and Raider, my wife rode him, stepped to the side and had to poop to the side also. Cooper and us talked about each others lives, got to know Cooper a bit more and how awesome he is, Cooper also explained each horse's unique personalities. He said that Buckles is dramatic when he puts on his munchie bag, Raider seems to always make his own route but still somehow follows us. Patriot, he's one of the somewhat tall horses that Cooper likes to ride and showed us that one of his shoes came off during a muddy ride, he explained that the mud can unmount the shoes so he has temporary boot on. Cooper disclosed that we can take our own pictures as long as we have one hand on the rope and our hemet is secured. Towards some parts of the trail, Cooper offered to take pics at the mountain peak and at a flat part of the trail with no mud. We got back at the end and visit the small petting zoo, saw goats, cows, chickens, ponies, bunnies and one chicken name Stumbles. We overall had a great couples experience and having Cooper as our wrangler. We do have one small problem, we wish the website had updated with more of our pictures uploaded that Cooper took, it seems that we only got the pics uploaded from Ocean, the girl from the check-in building. I bet we just need to give them call to have them upload the rest so for now, I'll keep it at 4 stars till we call them after we get back home. read more

First Time Here We have 3 boys (11, 14, 16 years old), everything is BORING. So we had to be creative and do activity that they would all enjoy. We stopped by Gunstock Ranch with our almost-2-year-old just for the free petting zoo (not the horseback tours). It was such a sweet little stop! I wouldn't make a special trip just for this, but if you're already on the North Shore, it's a perfect bonus activity for little kids after the beach. The petting zoo had a great variety of animals: goats, sheep, cows, rabbits, and a pony. Plus, plenty of horses nearby that kids can see up close. It was actually the first time my son saw a real cow, which was surprisingly hard to find on the island. The staff was super friendly. One of them made a point to tell us (more than once) that we didn't have to buy animal treats, but we still did. Looks like they changed the price for $2 per bag just recently but it was still worth it. There are restrooms on-site and a hand-washing station with soap. Everything felt clean, safe, and very kid-welcoming. Overall, it's a fun and easy stop to work into your day if you're already on the North Shore with a kid. We loved it! read more

We came here on a Saturday evening for the one and a half hour sunset tour. It took us a while to drive here to the north side of the island, but it was a beautiful drive and we made a bunch of stops along the way. This place was easy to find using Google maps. Once we drove down the dirt path and parked on the grass, we were quickly checked in, given the option to wear a helmet or not, and weighed on the scale to match us with the perfect horse. While we waited, we were able to go to their small petting zoo, feed the animals, and pet some of the horses. Our two lady tour guides were wonderful. They were very informative and kind. The experience at gunstock Ranch was nothing short of amazing. My friend had initially booked this reservation for us to plant a tree together in honor of her late father. We arrived at gunstock Ranch about 10 minutes prior to our reservation to which we were greeted warmly and proceeded to be shown around by Summer and Devin, who are both wonderful friendly and just enjoy to have conversation with. Our first stop was picking a plant for us to be able to put into a designated plot of land where we were able to discuss the purpose behind the tree planting as well as have the plants be watered by using an ipu (I think I'm saying that right). While we were going about this tree planting experience our conversation with both Devon and Summer were nothing short of personal and engaging. They were both very knowledgeable about the area and made us feel at home and at peace every step of the way. Once we got up to the vantage point (which was kind of a bumpy ride, but nevertheless enjoyable), we looked out, and we were just amazed by the beautiful weather and the momentous occasion of this particular experience. I'm eager to return to learn how to go horseback riding and I am definitely going to be asking for Devin and the Summer again! read more

My daughter and I did the 2 hour private horsemanship experience and it was absolutely perfect for her! She loves horses and is learning to ride but still has a lot of anxiety about it. My first time on a horse and I had an awesome time! I actually booked this activity for mine and my husband's wedding anniversary. My husband has had horseback riding experience and he was excited to see me ride a horse for the first time! We checked in with Heather at Gunstock Ranch. She was cute as a button and had great energy and a personality to match! Our guide was Lucas and he was awesome too! There were only three of us on the ride in addition to our guide so it felt like a private ride. Lucas took us up and around the ranch property which took us up pretty high into the hills. The view was spectacular from up there! The horses were great! You can tell that they are well taken care of! My horse was named Boone and my husband rode Ginley. At one point, Ginley got spooked on our ride but the hubsters took it all in stride. I think I was more scared than he was. My horse didn't seem to want to follow in a single file. But he was easy to ride and very cooperative and just a good boy in general. Lucas was friendly and shared great information with us. I learned a lot about horses on my ride. There is a free petting zoo with goats, a cow and a bull and a few loose chickens. I even found an egg while playing and petting this cute goat. The Silkie white hen was super cute and friendly. I'd never seen one in person. She even let me pick her up. The rooster ... not so much. You can also buy feed for a $1 for the animals. The weather was gorgeous onthe day that we rode. It was a warm day with a nice cool breeze. The ranch is really nice and clean and It's obvious the owners take good care of the animals, the property and the guides. read more

Their horse tried to kill me but otherwise it was a pleasant experience. My husband took me on a private horseback tour with lunch for Valentine's Day and it was such an awesome surprise! Super romantic and a lot of fun. Gunstock ranch painted their horses with animal safe paint for the occasion so they had cute pink hearts and said things like "be mine". Awwww! The staff were all very friendly and the place was very nice and well- maintained. Bathrooms were clean. Equipment was in good condition. The 2 hour adventure we did included a private guide and a picnic lunch which we enjoyed at a lookout point where we could see the ocean and enjoy cool breezes. The ride was mostly slow and easy. Where things went sideways was it turned out that our guide's horse, Nani does not like gates and my horse Meatloaf does not like Nani. When our guide was paused to open a gate (there's a series of them along the trail ride) she said the person before her didn't latch it properly so she was taking a while to open it. Nani got restless and she spooked Meatloaf who reared up like something out of a western movie which me hanging on for dear life on his back!!!!!! I was terrified and it all happened so quickly. My area to fall on was a barbed wire fence or a metal gate. :) Luckily I'm good at holding on and have ridden horses before and my husband is calm under pressure so he said, "just hang on" and when Meatloaf stopped bucking he told me to get him to eat the bushes on the side to calm down. Luckily his face mask broke off while we were eating lunch so he was distracted by eating bushes afterwards. I had to ride the rest of the way shaking a bit and I couldn't wait to dismount. Other than that, it was fine haha. I wish the guide would have disclosed that information prior to the incident because I could have stayed further back or we could have ridden in a different order with my husband in between. I even asked before the tour started if all our horses got along because this is what causes horses to spook. The guide said me and my husbands horses were "best friends". She did not tell us about her horse not being cool with gates or my horse not liking hers. read more

I only ride occasionally so I got matched with a mellow horse. The view is wonderful and worth the price. You need to constantly keep your horse in check because they want to eat the grass. Amazing Keiki ride with my boy and his bestie today. We had the best time! The kids are three years old. my kiddo rode the lovely Libby and his friend rode Buttons. Both were sweet and docile, perfect for a couple of pony rides. The best part? They're not mini horses or Shetlands. These were actual horses. Talei was excellent with the kids and the adults. She instantly put them at ease. She was kind, patient, friendly, and knowledgeable. She took us on a 20 minute walk then let the kids feed and brush Buttons. We went for a sunset horseback ride this past week. The ranch hands were all super nice, helpful and attentive. Our two horses seem to be well behaved and fobedient. A horse or two behind us didn't seem quite as obedient. Our guide, Connor, was nice and explained a lot about the history of the area, what we were looking at, etc. We were lucky to ride through some grazing cattle, which also seemed well behaved and well cared for. I feel a little guilty giving a less than 5 star review given how many people enjoy and praise Gunstock Ranch, but I felt that I needed to speak truthfully about my experience. The check-in process was smooth as we had booked in advance. They have restrooms on site for you to utilize. They allow you to pet some of the horses while waiting, and they have a petting zoo of cows, goats, and rabbits as well. The wranglers are all great in helping you to get on your hose safely and feel comfortable on your horse. We did the 1.5 hour scenic walking tour. Once our horses were lined up, we set out. All was going smoothly, but the number of times that we paused was beginning to get frustrating. I understand that the wranglers have to ensure everyone is staying in line and also wait for the group when a horse is going to the bathroom, but at some point, it gets very tiring to trot about 10 steps and then pause over and over again. The individual at the front of the line was lucky to get to talk to the wrangler and hear some facts about the ranch and where we were walking through. The rest of us in the middle and back though, we didn't get to hear anything. Previous horseback riding tours I've been on usually had more talkative wranglers that made the experience more engaged. For being in the middle of the line, the whole tour was really in silence for me, I wasn't really sure what I was looking at while we were going other than seeing two baby calves. We got to the scenic point where our photos were taken (and sadly they were never uploaded for us to purchase). The scenic point was beautiful, the nature and surroundings were too, I just wish we got to interact more with the wranglers to hear more about the history. Given the reviews, I expected a little more from the service here. My horse was adorable and well behaved though, and I felt safe during the entirety of the ride. read more

She checked us in when we got there and we observed her before our tour with other guests and she was so nice to everyone, such great energy! My husband and I reserved a couple ride. We are horse people and should have know better. All places who do trail rides, do not treat their horses well. The sway backs, the poorly fitted saddles, scarred pressure spots, poorly trimmed feet. And watching them try to use a horse that had just gotten back from a two hour trail ride with an over weight individual, to turn around and ride again, was disgusting. We refused to ride, told the wranglers why and they didn't care. This place collects horses and works them until they are too broken to stand. And to top it off, this place was called the best one in the area of Turtle Bay. If you care about horses, or just animals, avoid this place at all costs. My boyfriend and I booked their sunset horseback ride for our anniversary and I swear this was our best anniversary celebration yet!! It was about an hour drive out to Laie and I'm glad we took my AWD car vs. my boyfriends low hatchback since the dirt road up to Gunstock Ranch could be a little bit difficult for lower cars. We were told to come 45 minutes before our reservation. This gave us ample time to check-in, get weighed in, go through a 15 minute training demonstration, and get to hang out with some of their other animals in their petting zoo including a giant bunny, goats, and a beautiful cow. I've only been horseback riding once in Costa Rica back in high school so it's been many many years, unless you count a mechanical bull I rode in a bar in SF a couple months ago. Gunstock Ranch really caters their rides for all skill levels. They even have a little staircase to help you get onto the horse with ease. I picked up these vintage pair of cowboys boots in Idaho years ago and this was my chance to finally put them to their intended use. My boyfriend wore regular running shoes but I was way more comfortable since my cowboy boots with the narrow tip fit in perfectly into the straps. I was with Ikaika and he truly lived up to his name, he was so strong and handsome! Ikakika's job was to make sure that all the other horses stayed with the pack, so we were in the back of the group. We did the hour UTV tour with our family of 5. Amanda was our driver and she was great. We got to see different areas of the 1000 acre ranch with beautiful views and a couple surprises that were wonderful. She even picked ripe guava for us to try, which was delicious. Amanda also spoke about the history of the ranch, which was fun to learn about. I enjoyed seeing all the animals and how they are free to roam in open pastures.
