All of the other rifle ranges I've been to in the North Houston area have been absolutely dreadful so I was hoping for a change of pace. The Cawthon Cartridge Club (CCC) is located near Navasota, TX and about 20 miles from Aggieland. The range is on a huge swath of land, I reckon about +800 acres. They have a 200 yard range, numerous uncovered tactical bays with just a few steel targets, several pistol bays and a 5-stand area for shotgun. The entire area (including berms) was covered in a lush green grass that was freshly mowed. The roads were crushed limestone. The owner roves the grounds in a John Deere Gator UTV but other than that there were no Range Safety Officers. I was only interested in shooting long distance so proceeded to the rifle range. Newcomers are restricted to 500 yards and below until they quality with the owner. There were steel hanger targets every 50 yards and at the 500 yard line, there were about 8 different steel targets of varying sizes. The grass was very neatly trimmed and gently sloped downward. Beyond the 500 yard line were targets every 100 yards until 1200. The shooting area was up on a hill with a nice metal shade structure. There were some rickety old benches but I chose to shoot prone. There was a nice breeze blowing into our faces which really helped to beat the brutal heat and humidity. Out beyond the 1200 yard target was a farmer working a field in his tractor. The owner advised us of this beforehand and asked us to hold fire until he was out of sight. This was annoying as the farmer was constantly behind the target area; fortunately I had two people with me, one to spot my targets and the other to keep an eye on the farmer. Hopefully this is not a regular occurrence. I've never shot at a range this nice before. They didn't have as many steel targets as ETTS in Waxahachie but the grounds were much nicer. Membership is $750/yr but they let me pay only for the remainder of 2016. Guests are $25 each and you are normally restricted to two.

Place is well kept. No green tip allowed. Not being a member meant I was only allowed on the 100…read morerange. There's a metal folding chair and a bench that's too high for it at the 100 so I just went prone instead. So if you're not a member don't expect much. Otherwise, I understand there's some decent long shots to be had there with covered shelters and such. I don't recall the membership dues but it's several hundred dollars.

I spoke with Shane Savage regarding what the outdoor range renting process is and he was super friendly and patient with my questions and guided me through it. It is super simple. You reserve a date and time and hopefully it's open, he sends you a confirmation text and you simply show up. He met with me, gave me a wagon with a fold-up table, free paper target (per person), a staple gun, a bucket to collect your brass, and fold-up chairs. It was a smaller range, but perfect for us, There were both wooden target stands to hang your targets (free to use) and steel targets (for $5 extra or $1 extra for more paper targets). My sons and I were the only ones there so it was nice and private. We signed a waiver, setup our own station, put up targets, and had fun safely shooting your weapon(s). The range is about 50yds, but I specifically brought my kids here so they'd get used to a few of our home defense additions at a realistic distance. He does ask that you pick up and collect your trash and brass. I'd recommend bringing water to drink and a trash bag for your convenience. There is a restroom available. It's a field, so there's really enough parking for you. Shane sits in his truck for the duration of your stay and for any questions or requests that you may have later on. The range is $20 to rent for 2 hours per person, but if you come with more people, there's a discounted price. It was $45 for the 3 of us. I know Shane also teaches classes on safety and other courses, but we've never used those services, but according to the numerous 5 star Google reviews that I've read, it's safe to assume he's an amazing instructor. You can holster draw and set up targets at your leisure. Only thing that might turn people away is that there is no oversight/range master, so you're going to want to be very comfortable around guns and have friends that are smart too.

That may scare many who haven't spent a whole lot of time growing up around all sorts of ranges. My favorite when I am around people who know and trust are ranges like this. I don't like range boys eyeballing my guns and even touching them. The benches are a bit old, but I can shoot responsibly without being on guard, or messed with because I DID not live up to their NEW shooter protocols. Their prices are EXCELLENT, and you can shoot pistols, rifles and clays on ranges that are seperated safely. I will recommend it, but again, this isn't for those who like "high end" ranges. You will enjoy having fun with your family and friends here.

Awesome experience…read more A friend of mine and I went out here because I'm we had a day off on a Monday. You bring all your own gear, which was easy for us. We brought our targets, and clay pigeons. They said they are getting some electronic throwers soon. When you arrive you check in, sign waivers, pay (per person & per gun) and they'll give you a run down of where you want to go on the property. They make a note of you and the guns you've got, and a way to contact you. They have a variety of different ranges to chose from. They'll tell you where they are. The property is really cool outdoors area, and if you a familiar with firearms then this place is a dream for those looking to do their own thing. The owner of the property came out to greet us as well. We made sure to be respectful of the property and cleaned up after ourselves. We will be returning in the future.

I offered to rent the gun, but he demurred. Then he spent ten minutes of his time (at a point in the middle of the tournament) to instruct her on proper technique and position. He went way beyond the call of duty. The range officers were friendly and professional yet effectively enforced all safety rules. All in all, it was a wonderful experience.
