I have been here twice and both times have been great experiences and a lot of fun. This place is kinda in the middle of nowhere (even for the Brazos Valley!) but the guy that works here is extremely friendly and my wife and I (both born and bred Southern Californians) felt very comfortable and welcomed. My brother-in-law prefers this range because it's one simple flat fee to enter and spend however long you want, it's nice to be able to spend a relaxing day at the shooting range without worrying about racking up a huge bill by paying hourly rates. After shooting here, I cannot imagine every going to an indoor shooting range. This is always one of my favorite places to visit when visiting the Brazos Valley!

You can holster draw and set up targets at your leisure. All of the other rifle ranges I've been to in the North Houston area have been absolutely dreadful so I was hoping for a change of pace. The Cawthon Cartridge Club (CCC) is located near Navasota, TX and about 20 miles from Aggieland. The range is on a huge swath of land, I reckon about +800 acres. They have a 200 yard range, numerous uncovered tactical bays with just a few steel targets, several pistol bays and a 5-stand area for shotgun. The entire area (including berms) was covered in a lush green grass that was freshly mowed. The roads were crushed limestone. The owner roves the grounds in a John Deere Gator UTV but other than that there were no Range Safety Officers. I was only interested in shooting long distance so proceeded to the rifle range. Newcomers are restricted to 500 yards and below until they quality with the owner. There were steel hanger targets every 50 yards and at the 500 yard line, there were about 8 different steel targets of varying sizes. The grass was very neatly trimmed and gently sloped downward. Beyond the 500 yard line were targets every 100 yards until 1200. The shooting area was up on a hill with a nice metal shade structure. There were some rickety old benches but I chose to shoot prone. There was a nice breeze blowing into our faces which really helped to beat the brutal heat and humidity. Out beyond the 1200 yard target was a farmer working a field in his tractor. The owner advised us of this beforehand and asked us to hold fire until he was out of sight. This was annoying as the farmer was constantly behind the target area; fortunately I had two people with me, one to spot my targets and the other to keep an eye on the farmer. Hopefully this is not a regular occurrence. I've never shot at a range this nice before. They didn't have as many steel targets as ETTS in Waxahachie but the grounds were much nicer. Membership is $750/yr but they let me pay only for the remainder of 2016. Guests are $25 each and you are normally restricted to two.

There's a metal folding chair and a bench that's too high for it at the 100 so I just went prone instead. So if you're not a member don't expect much. Otherwise, I understand there's some decent long shots to be had there with covered shelters and such. I don't recall the membership dues but it's several hundred dollars.

This is my experience and as these things go, your mileage may vary. It was easy to get to, well marked, good hours, and open hours I like. The prices are not cheap but this is definitely a sellers market, so I thought it was a deal. The person working the range office/check in/store was superb. He alone was going for a 5 star review. Personable, knowledgeable, patient with newbies. I only tried out the 25 yard range and the 22 range. This is a public range with no range officer, the world's dumbest people will be here. We started with the pistol range. While shooting with three students at the pistol range two deputy Barney Fife's came up and walked right up to the stands they wanted to shoot and then started setting up. They either have a lot more confidence in humanity or have no common sense. I'm confident of the later. Then whenever they wanted they would walk up to their target to do their deeds or stand 3' from their targets to shoot. I'm surprised some law enforcement agency signed off to give them shooting privileges. The tables, trash can and other furnishings were well shot up. The berms looked good but had seen some rough use. I'm thinking they need new furnishings and some cameras to keep up on the idiocy. Next we went to the 22 range to do some plinking. Much better on the range manners, but we were the only ones with a 22. It's more of a short range (25 yards) than a .22 range. Many of those black rifles were awesome hog shooters or tactical firearms, I'm hoping the berms were designed for the use. The tables, cover and trash cans here were far less shot up. We finished up with a round of skeet for everyone. They had two of them and they were in great shape. No one cleans up after themselves so lots of shotgun shells everywhere. Also, we had to refill the traps mid-way so I'm not sure if they take care of that (likely not) or expect you to (obviously). I'm thinking the place is minimally cared for and saving on the staffing. Basically, come and shoot whatever and don't get hurt. Or hope no one hurts you. I'd definitely come again, but likely not on beautiful weekend afternoon with all the brain dead.
